Notes: Tom started the year by winning the AHRA Winternationals for the second year in a row. He qualified #6 and, in the final, beat Don Prudhomme for the victory. Tom was hoping for a repeat at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but it didn't happen. He qualified #15 with a 6.200/230.76 and a 6.27/230.76 in the first round, beating Billy Meyer's 6.32. In the second round, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.32/234 to 6.92/150.25. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #12 at 6.201/225.56, and in round one, he beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.18/232 with a quick-leaving 6.247/229.59. In round two, he improved to a 6.126/233.76 but lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.06/227 in the "Blue Max." At the end of March, he was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division 4 race, but he lost to John White's 7.29/226 in the first round, with a quicker 7.09/219.51. Hoover set Low ET in qualifying #1 at Houston's third NHRA Division 4 race. There were only three FCs at the race, and Tom soloed due to his top qualifying spot and ran 6.37/225.56 to advance to the final against John White. In the final, Hoover's Corvette developed problems, and he shut down, giving White the victory. At the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 6.10/236.84 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. In round one, he ran 6.27/220.04 but lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.25/234. Hoover ran really well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.20/231.95 qualified #8, and in the first round, he beat Roy Harris, 6.22/230.76 to 6.60/186. Another 6.22/227.84 in round two topped Rick Johnson's 6.25/236, while in the semifinals, his 6.30/224.43 advanced when Ed McCulloch had a header come loose and shut down. He faced Beadle in the final, and Tom smoked the tires to a runner-up finish to the "Max's" 6.09/235. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. There he qualified #2 with a 6.51/209.80. He then went on to win by beating Dale Tuter and Henry Harrison before stopping Larry Fullerton in the final with a 6.63/212.27. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, choosing to go to Alamo Dragway in San Antonio, Texas, for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.11 qualified #2 behind Prudhomme's 5.92. But in the first round, he smoked the tires to a 6.89 that lost to John Collins' 6.29. He also didn't go to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Things went his way at Union Grove on July 27 for the NHRA Division 3 race. A 6.21 qualified #2, and he went on to win, running 6.24 in the final to beat Frank Hawley. Tom's next NHRA national event was Indy, where he qualified #3 at 6.021/243.90. Unfortunately, he broke on the burnout against McCulloch in round one. He qualified well at Seattle, hitting 6.045/230.76 for the second slot. But again, first-round troubles set in, and he shut off against Gordie Bonin in the first round. Tom's qualifying prowess continued at Ontario, as his 6.123/234.98 grabbed the #2 spot. He beat John Collins in round one, 6.173/221.13 to 6.83/188, but Raymond Beadle got him in round two, 6.13/237 to 6.32/222.27. |

Notes: Hoover started the '81 season by qualifying #6 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.03/215. This was his first race since his accident in June '80. He lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.56/211 in the first round, with a 6.85/209. As you can tell by the times, traction was marginal. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.28/213.27 best was the first alternate. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #2 with a 5.954/234.37. This was his first five-second run and the 5th entry into the Cragar Five Second Funny Car Club. His car came up ailing in the first round, and he lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." On March 22, he faced Don Prudhomme in a best-of-three-match race at State Capitol Raceway. He lost the match-turning a best of 6.45/201 compared to the "Snake's" 6.25/211. Tom was at Green Valley Raceway on April 5 for the NHRA Western Regional Opener, where he qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.69/212.26. He really picked it up in the first round when he beat Craig Epperly with a 6.17/238.09. In the semifinals, he beat Tripp Shumake with a 6.25/240.64 (Top Speed), and in the final, he faced Beadle. Hoover won with a 6.32/231.95 over the "Max's" 6.45/231. Hoover's next good showing came at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He even beat Prudhomme in the semifinals before losing in the final to upstart Tom Hovland. Hoover's 6.94/213 finished runner-up to Hovland's 6.85/218. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals in St. Louis, Hoover qualified #1 with a 6.31/226.71. Unfortunately, a first-round 6.36/228.43 lost to Gordie Bonin's 6.28/235. Back in the NHRA competition on June 21 for the Springnationals, Tom ran 6.12/233.16 to qualify #3. Another 6.12/226 stopped Shirl Greer in Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round. His 6.17/224 beat Roy Harris in round two, but in the semifinals, he slowed to 6.36 at 202.24 in a loss to Raymond Beadle's 6.15/227 in the "Blue Max."He did not race at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals or Englishtown for the Summernationals, but he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. A 6.30/229.06 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.18/235. Tom's 6.45/229.59 beat Brian Conway in round one, but he had to shut down on the line with an oil leak in the semifinals. John Collins was given a solo into the final. On July 26, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Western Regional race. He ran a solo 6.37/233.76 in the opening round after opponent Doc Halladay could not run due to a fire he had during qualifying. In the semifinal, his off-pace 6.75/222.22 lost to the eventual winner Mike Dunn's 6.24/236. |

At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he failed to qualify, running a best of 6.29/229.00 (sixth alternate). At the NHRA Gatornationals, he made the show with a 6.13/232.55 that put him in the #11 spot. A 6.65 in the first round, lost to John Pott's 6.17. Hoover was at Tulsa in May for the AHRA Springnationals, but his 6.59/218.44 lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.51/222. | Tom ran 6.09 in a first-round win at the PHR Championships in August 82. | 6.173 248.76 AHRA US 30 1982 defeating Tom Hovland and broke to Don Prudhomne in the semis- Danny White |

Notes: Tom started the season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. The track was poor, and he qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 7.59. In the first round, he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme when his 7.67/182 fell to the "Snake's" 7.32/229. Hoover qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.349/231.95. A 6.33/220.58 lost to John Lombardo's 6.12/232 in the first round. He attempted to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, but his 6.104/236.22 best was good for the second alternate. Those were, however, Tom's best NHRA national event times of the year. Tom also failed to make the show at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where his 6.20/229.00 failed to qualify, but he wasn't alone as this was a tough eight-car show to break into. Kenny Bernstein, Raymond Beadle, Billy Meyer, Gary Burgin, and Dale Pulde were among the "name" drivers that failed to qualify. The following week (April 24), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.12 but lost early. A best of 6.19/230.17 was good for the third alternate at the NHRA Springnationals. Photo from GVRC February 1983. |

Notes: 1984 was not Tom's most successful year. He qualified #3 for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.25 but fouled against Bryan Raines in the first round. He failed to qualify at Pomona (#4 alternate at 6.15/236.84), and things didn't go much better at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at the NHRA Gatornationals with a best of 6.362/233.16. He also missed the field in Atlanta, finishing as the #2 alternate at 6.217/238.09. Early in May, Tom was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.53/168 qualified #12. Unfortunately, he lost in the opening round of eliminations. He also lost in the first round, at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships after qualifying #9. Hoover qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a booming 6.057/250.00, but that resulted in a first-round loss to Jim Head, 5.84/254 to 6.98/138. Indy also was disappointing as he failed to qualify for the NHRA US Nationals with a #5 alternate 6.070/239.36 effort. That was Tom's last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: Hoover failed to qualify at Pomona for the season-opening Winternationals. His best of 6.25/218.55 was a bit short of the 6.08 "bump." Tom ran much better at the Gatornationals after having a top-end fire during qualifying. Gene Snow helped tune the car, and Hoover ran a 5.86/247.93 to qualify #13. When Rick Johnson fouled, he took it easy with a 7.23/126.19 in the first round. But in the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein. He qualified last (#16) in Atlanta for the Southern Nationals with a 6.06/234.49, and his 6.12/224.66 in the opening round fell to Billy Meyer's 5.99/250. Shortly after that, Tom was at Tulsa for the ADRA Springnationals. It was an eight-car field, and he reached the finals, where he would face John Force. John had to shut down with a water leak, and Hoover soloed for the victory. In June, he went to Brainerd for the Crown Auto Funny Car Championships. This was another eight-car field, and in round one, his 5.94/240 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo, who was driving the "Blue Max." He improved to 5.88/251.31 in the semifinal, but it wasn't enough to beat Mark Oswald's 5.84/247 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He came back out later to run a consolation race against Tom McEwen. Hoover's 5.87/252.45 beat the "Mongoose's" quicker 5.84/250. Tom ran 6.157/239.36 at ADRA Kansas City International Raceway in August. The best times of the year were 5.740/258.17 at Indy (#7 qualifier). |

Notes: At Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing, Hoover ran 5.84/241.93 to qualify #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 5.86/245.23 beat Jim Head's 5.93/257, and in the semifinals, his 5.94/233.16 beat a tire-smoking John Martin. This put Tom into the final, where he ran John Force. A 5.91/240.00 wasn't enough to overcome John's 5.80/254. Tom qualified #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.84/246.57. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 7.60-98 that lost to John Collins' 5.80/210. Atlanta held an eight-car Funny Car show early in the year, and Hoover qualified on the pole with a 5.99/243.90. He beat a tire-smoking Steve Hodkinson in the first round, with a 6.00/236.84, and in the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 5.86/236.22 when Mark Oswald broke against him in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. In the final, he faced John Martin, and unfortunately for Tom, he smoked the tires to an 11.17 and watched as Martin roared to the win with a 6.02/243. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.88/250.69 qualified #9. This set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Kenny Bernstein. Hoover stepped it up to a 5.766/254.23, but it wasn't enough to overcome Kenny's 5.64/255. Back at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals, Tom qualified #11 with a 5.93/245.76. He lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. Photo from Indy 1986. Tom's best times were 5.766 in the first round, at NHRA Gainesville and 261.62 Top Speed of the Meet at NHRA Brainerd. |

Notes: In January, Hoover started his season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He was driving his new Firebird Trans Am. It was an eight-car field, and he ran 5.91/227.27 to qualify #3. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.97/238.09 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.95/238. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.68/252.31. In the first round, both Hoover and Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car ran 5.76 (Hoover at 229.65), but Oswald won. On March 15, Tom was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 5.81/248.61 (Top Speed). He advanced to the final, where he faced Jim Head. In the final, he slowed to 6.01/228, which lost to Jim's 5.66 track record pass. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.68/254.16. Once again, Hoover lost in round one, when Kenny Bernstein's 5.58/261 beat his 5.73/252.88. He didn't race at the NHRA Winston All-Stars race. Hoover was back in Atlanta on April 26 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.76/254.38 qualified #7, and in the first round, his 5.99/233.34 advanced when Tom McEwen exploded a supercharger. In the second round, his 5.88/231.36 lost to McCulloch's 5.66/260. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he lost to Oswald in the first round. He did not race at the NHRA Cajun Nationals as it was postponed one week due to rain and run on May 31, the same day Tom was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Tom sold the car to Gary Page in England. Tom ran a confirmed 260.94 at Englishtown 87. Where was the 264 run? He went 5.87/234 at the AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. Photo from Columbus 1987. | Update on "264 run" He ran that in his #1 Qualifying performance at Ennis during the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge on 8/1/87 with a 5.592 ET. - Rob McCabe |

Notes: Tom finally got onto direct-drive bandwagon in '88, had a few wheelstands. Photo from Indy 1988. Confirmed 261.47 at Brainerd 1988. Where was the 264.70 run? | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #9 with a 5.57. He beat low qualifier John Force in the first round, and Jim Head in round two before losing to Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Tom was at DeSoto Dragway in March for the IHRA Supernationals. In the first round his Firebird broke behind the line giving eventual winner Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird a solo into the semifinals. He made the field at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals and lasted until round two where he got out of shape and shut off against Ed McCulloch. He also lasted until the second round at the IHRA Texas Nationals. There his 5.55/260.41 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.50/264. The next NHRA stop was at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals. Hoover qualified #13 with a 5.77, but he lost to John Martin in round one. A week later (May 22), he was running at the IHRA Springnationals where he ran 5.76 in qualifying #5. In the first round, he only needed a 6.02/216.91 to advance when Richard Tharp, driving the "Blue Max," got out of shape and shut off. In the semifinals, Tom ran another 5.76 at 242.61, but lost to Oswald's 5.64/261. Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of May, and Hoover qualified for the show, but lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1989. | Hoover entered the '89 season with a new carbon fiber body on his McKinney chassis. He continued to run the AFT clutch that had served him so well in late '88. His 82 year old father, George, continued to serve as crew chief. Tom started the '89 season by qualifying #9 with a 5.42/268.73 at Pomona for the Winternationals. He faced low qualifier John Force in the first round, and beat him with a 5.39/260.11 to Force's 5.46/275. In the second round, be lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the next event, the Supernationals at Houston, he qualified #10 with a 5.43/264.23 and once again, met Force in the first round. Again, Hoover stepped up with a 5.36 beating John in the first round, for the second straight race. Unfortunately, just like at the first event, Hoover lost in round two. This time, he smoked the tires and shut off, giving Scott Kalitta an easy (7.60/150) victory. At the Gatornationals, he again qualified #10 with a 5.45/264.16 getting the spot. He lost to Bruce Larson in the first round. At the fourth race of the season, the Southern Nationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.49/244.75. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, but lost to Force in round two. It was on to Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals where a 5.36/264.78 qualified #5. He beat John Martin in the first round, but then smoked the tires in round two and lost to Bernstein. At the Cajun Nationals, he lost in the first round, after qualifying #11 with a 5.57/263.15. Things went much better at the Springnationals. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.44/252.66, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. In that race, Don overpowered the track and smoked the tires while Hoover hustled (?) to a 5.67/183 win. In the second round, he faced Mark Oswald. Mark broke after his burnout and Tom ran a 12.00-67 for the win. In the semifinals, Jim White smoked the tires and a 5.55/242 got Tom into the final. His luck ran out in the final when Larson's 5.42/275 dropped the Firebird's smoky 6.79/135.89. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 5.54/256.77 qualified #5, and he beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, with a 5.57/251.18. In the second round, Bernstein's 5.47/270 beat Tom's 5.68/211.29. The ninth race on the NHRA schedule was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Hoover ran a 5.38 to qualify #5, and he beat Etchells in the first round. In the second round, he got out of shape just off the line and lost to Prudhomme. His dad, George Hoover, showed that he could tune a car in the thin air of Denver for the next race, the Mile High Nationals. Tom ran a 5.76/248.61 in qualifying #8, even out qualifying Prudhomme. In the first round, be beat Gary Ritter, but in round two, he lost to Ed McCulloch. At the California Nationals, Tom qualified #10 with a 5.47/256.70. But once again, McCulloch got him, this time in the first round. At Seattle for the NHRA Seafair Nationals, a 5.47/273.63 qualified #10. This time Prudhomme beat him in round one. The next stop on the NHRA tour was Brainerd for the Northstar Nationals. Tom qualified #12 with a 5.66/261.55 and in the first round, he improved to a 5.54/265.48, but it wasn't enough to get around Prudhomme's 5.49/261. Hoover almost didn't make the field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. He ran a best of 5.55/259.36 in qualifying and that just held for the "bump" spot. In all, he made four qualifying runs; the times were 5.72, 5.69, 5.55, and 5.58. In the first round, he improved to a 5.42/238.28 that beat Bernstein's tire smoking 7.80/111, but in the second round, he went into a wheelstand and shut off against Etchells. The following week (September 10), he was at Darlington for the IHRA US Open. Tom qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 5.54/265.01, but in the first round, he blew a motor and lost to Johnny West. At Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, a 5.41/253.09 qualified #10. He fouled against Oswald in the first round. |

Notes: Won emotional NHRA Ford Nats '92 (first NHRA national event win since 1979) just weeks after "Ma" Hoover passed away. Photo from 1992 US Nationals. | Hoover qualified #14 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.42/273.72. He lost to John Force in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #9 with a 5.47/272.47. He picked up to a career best (to this point) of 5.26 at 273.05 in the first round, to beat Gary Bolger's 5.44/262. Another strong pass of 5.32/259.14 beat John Force's 5.46/271. In the semifinals, he beat Johnny West with a 5.34/265.87 to go into the final against Richard Hartman. Once again he made a strong run, clocking a 5.27/263.46 for his third career NHRA National event win over a tire smoking Hartman. It was Tom's first win since the '79 Winternationals, and it came just a month after his mother had passed away from heart disease. Hoover went on to Houston for the NHRA Supernationals where he ran 5.30/253.80 to qualify #6. A first-round 5.72/193.25 beat Whit Bazemore's 5.78/178. In round two, he advanced with a 5.35/238.98 when Hartman fouled. In the semifinals, his 5.78/183.18 lost to Gordon Mineo's 5.34/250. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show and he qualified #4 with a 5.79/228.42. He worked his way into the final by beating Whit Bazemore in the first round, (both ran 5.62, Tom at 261.32), and Paul Smith in the semifinals with a 5.58/260.19. In the final, he stopped Del Worsham for the victory with a 5.66/249.58. Next stop was Gainesville the following week (March 22) for the NHRA Gatornationals. Things didn't go so well there as he lost in the first round, to Chuck Etchells after qualifying #12 with a 5.39/271.98. He debuted his new Dodge Daytona at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. |
