Notes: Hoover started his season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.22/277.69 qualified #7. Both he and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, smoked their tires hard in the opening round, and Hoover recovered first with an 8.45/150.72 over Kenji's 11.42. He again smoked the tires in round two and lost to Al Hofmann's 5.16/281. He qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.73, and he lost to low qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Tom ran much better at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, where his 5.24/252.24 qualified #7. Wyatt Radke broke against him in the first round, and Tom ran 5.91/150 to advance. In the second round, his 6.07/160 lost to Hofmann's 5.18/285. Tom had another solid season with consistent runs, elimination wins, and an event victory at the Autolite Nationals. His best times of 5.146/291.35 came at the World Finals. |

He lost to low qualifier Cruz Pedregon in the first round. Tom stepped up to a career best (to this point) 5.12 at 277.77 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Quality Care Arizona Nationals. He beat Richard Hartman's 5.36/284 in the first round, with a 5.25/231.48. But in round two he again lost to Pedregon. |

Notes: Tom failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the sixth alternate at 5.59/247.45. He did much better at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, where his 5.39/255.68 qualified #14. He improved to 5.24/287.90 to upset Cruz Pedregon's 5.34/287 in the first round. He then ran 5.29/258.62 to defeat Wyatt Radke in round two. In the semi-final, he ran his best time of the weekend, where his 5.23/276.32 took out Jim Epler. That put him in his first NHRA final since the '93 Autolite Nationals. Unfortunately, he slowed to 5.40/238.28 in the final and lost to John Force's 5.05/298. Houston was not a good race for Hoover. His 5.59/219.94 qualified on the "bump," and in the first round, his 5.86/178.11 fell to low qualifier Mark Oswald's 5.15/297. He stepped it up at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #5 with a 5.22/256.33. A 5.43/234.98 beat Gordie Bonin's 5.55/227 in the first round. He then lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. Shortly after that, he raced at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was just an eight-car field; his 5.47/228.60 qualified last. He lost to low qualifier Pedregon in the first round. He was again on the "bump" at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.56/241.02. Being last on the qualifying sheet always forced you to run the low qualifier in the first round. That did not help Hoover, as in the first round, his 5.30/257.43 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.15/262. He managed to qualify #13 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.38/231.30, but he still got beat in the first round, this time by Al Hofmann. |

Notes: Hoover qualified #13 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.485/246.84. Unfortunately, the car broke against Whit Bazemore in the first round. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals held near the end of February, his 5.425/239.68 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, he lost to low qualifier and eventual winner John Force, 5.12/295 to a 10-second shutoff. He had an eventful weekend at Gainesville in March. During qualifying, the car went into a wheelstand, and the body fell off the chassis. The chassis returned to the track, but the body was damaged. He mounted another one and ran 5.185/280.63 to qualify #10. After all that work, Hoover smoked the tires to 6.044/163.01 in a losing effort against Del Worsham in the first round. Seventeen fuel FCs showed up at Houston for the NHRA Slick 50 Nationals, and Tom qualified #9 at 5.177/269.94. More problems in round one saw Hoover and his opponent, Kenji Okazaki, both overpower the track and smoke the tires. When Hoover saw Kenji's tire smoke, he hammered it again, and the front end came up. The body once again flew off, landing right side up this time. When the chassis hit the pavement, it broke a Heim joint, and Hoover had no steering. He hit the wall, scraping along it for quite a short distance. Kenji won with a 10-second pass, and Tom was disqualified. The NHRA Winston Invitational saw Hoover have more of a "normal" weekend. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field and lost to low qualifier Force in the first round. NHRA Atlanta only had 16 cars show up, and qualifiers 13/16 were all over 10 seconds! Tom was #13 at 10.389/82.92. He lost to Mark Oswald in round one, 5.75/259 to 9.805/87.22. He qualified on the bump at NHRA Richmond with a 5.440/237.96 but lost to Force in round one, 5.040/297 to 5.962/165.68. He again benefitted from a 16-car field in Englishtown, and his 8.413/99.55 was #15. Tom lost to Al Hoffmann in round one, 5.14/297 to another abysmal run of 11.006/79.82. Only Jerry Caminito's 9.62 first alternate effort allowed Tom's 8.297/102.31 into the field in Columbus. Again, he suffered significant issues in round one and lost to Force, 5.02/304 to 10.565/84.01. Tom improved somewhat by Memphis, qualifying #10 at 5.350/256.77. He surprised Al Hoffmann in round one, 7.216/125.54 to an 8.73/87. Gremlins crept back in by round two, and Cruz Pedregon won easily, 5.24/293 to 8.932/95.79. Tom also had a solid qualifying effort at Topeka Spring, going 5.239/268.89 for #12. He beat Tim Wilkerson in round one, running 5.395/210.52 when Tim Broke. Hoffmann got to him in round two, however, 6.39/163 to Tom's troubled 13.111/72.63. Tom qualified #11 up on the mountain in Denver, going 5.369/255.39. He lost to Gary Densham in round one, 5.30/288 to 7.915/104.93. In Sonoma, Tom went 5.245/257.87 for #13 on the qualifying sheet. He actually made a representative run in round one, but his 5.551/210.72 lost to Hofmann's 5.09/305. Tom was the first alternate in Seattle at 9.266/88.98 but qualified #10 at Brainerd at 5.217/269.20. He again lost a step in round one, falling to Tony Pedregon, 5.20/297 to 6.362/146.48. At Indy, Tom qualified 15th at 5.180/285.08. He lost a close one to Tony Pedregon in round one. 5.01/306 to 5.109/283.64. Tom did not qualify for the Big Bud Shootout race within a race at Indy. He was the first alternate at Maple Grove at 5.770/188.12 but qualified #14 at Topeka Fall at 5.142/243.96. Tom lost to Cruz Pedregon in round one, 5.16/301 to 10.215/84.76. At Ennis, Tom stepped up to 5.111/281.16 for the #8 spot, his best qualifying spot of the year. He kept it going in round one, too, hitting 5.098/278.29 to take out Dean Skuza's 5.23/267. His off-pace 7.983/105.93 lost to Tony Pedregon's 5.06/301 in round two. Tom wrapped up the year with a #13 qualifying spot at the Winston Finals, going 5.166/256.62. A 12.040-83.13 lost to nemesis Al Hoffman's 5.43/204 in round one. Tom was one of the most consistent funny car racers in history, with solid times nearly every year. I would love to know what happened to him in 1996. Bad clutch discs, perhaps? It was a brutal year for one of the nicest guys on the circuit. Rick Howard photo from 1996 US Nats, Indy. |

Notes: Rick Howard photo of Funny Car Final Round at the 1997 NHRA Pontiac excitement Nats, Columbus. Qualified on the bump (16th) with a 5.56- 249.65. Upset pole-sitter Randy Anderson, Cruz Pedregon (with an improved 5.47), Del Worsham (no-show for semis), and finally Whit Bazemore with a better yet 5.34 at 270.35 to cap off a "storybook" race. Coming off open-heart surgery just two months before Columbus and returning to competition just two weeks before this event. It was his 5th overall NHRA Funny Car title and first since Sonoma 1993. |

Notes: Tom qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.66/212.86. In the opening round of eliminations, he shut off with tire shake against John Force, who advanced with a 4.98/308. He qualified #7 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.22/264.23. An even better 5.16/294.40 in the opening round fell to Whit Bazemore's 5.05/308. Tom was the sixteenth and final member of the Castrol Four Second Club on October 23, 1998, with a 4.938 in Ennis. Then bettered that with a 4.936 at the same race. | Ran 5.89 at AHRA Spokane in August. Won round two over Wyatt Radke, but we don't have other details yet. |

Notes: Dan was at Pomona for the NHRA World Finals. Unfortunately, his 6.008/212.36 best ended up as the sixth alternate. That was Dan's only NHRA national event this year. | Former Shady Glenn car. We need to confirm the 260. Dan Jr. only remembers 240. Rahn Tobler and Shirley Muldowney were involved. Shirley signed his license! Rahn moved back to Michigan after a large earthquake. He was about to convert the car to Shirley's engine combo, but it never happened. - Dan Horan Jr., Racin & Rockin Radio, 12/01/14 |

Notes: Gave the car away at Ontario 78. | Dave qualified #7 at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. A 7.00/205 beat Ezra Boggs in the first round, but in the second round, his 7.08/211 lost to John Collins' 6.90/216. Times were a little more normal at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 6.367/226.70 qualified #10 on 2/04/78. Dave's 6.47/216 in the first round, lost to Tommy Ivo's 6.38/220. His next stop was at Beeline Dragway for the Phoenix Winter Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.35/231.36 qualified #4. He was upset in the first round, where his off-pace 7.05/228.42 lost to Gene Modlin's 7.09/195. He also lost early at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his tire-smoking 6.55/217.91 lost to John Force's 6.39/212 in round one. Dave was at Fremont on April 2 for the NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #3 in the eight-car field with a 6.34/223.32, and another 6.34/223.32 beat Pat Foster in the opening round of eliminations. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, the "Super Shops" car broke against eventual winner John Lombardo. Shortly after(May 13), he was at OCIR for the next NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.19/229.00 qualified #3, and he improved to 6.05/235.60 in the opening round to beat Foster. But a semifinal 6.35/230.17 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.00/242. He finished runner-up to Henry Harrison at Beeline Dragway's Gold Cup Funny Car series race. |

Notes: Hovland started the '81 season by qualifying on the "bump spot" at the AHRA Winternationals with a 7.22/206 (traction was non-existent as Low ET was 6.54). In the first round, he ran a 6.85/209.30 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.56/211. He ran one NHRA national event, the US Nationals at Indy. His 6.038/230.76 #12 qualifying effort was a quarter-second better than Tom's previous best run. He won the first-round over Mike Dunn, 6.319/219.51 to 7.42/135. In the second round, he lost to Mike's dad Jim Dunn, 6.20/230 to 6.998/130.24. Photo from the 1981 US Nationals. |
