Notes: After crashing the team's Trans Am at the Gators, the team brought out this Dodge Omni. It was the first nitro Omni body to hit the track. (The Omni/Charger didn't really become the "go-to" body until 1981). Len attempted to qualify at the PHR Championships in August, but his best of 6.50 was good for the fifth alternate. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.104/235.66. A first-round 6.206/230.76 beat John Force's quicker 6.28/241, but in round two, he lost to Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car, 6.15/240 to 6.307/199.11. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. We need to confirm the 6.07. |

Notes: Len attempted to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he ended up as the fourth alternate with a 6.23/226.13 best. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he crashed in qualifying (times unavailable, but some reports indicate a 6.19?. The official ladder I've seen shows Jim Dunn on the bump at 6.21 and no times for Len). The team then came out with the sport's first Dodge Omni nitro car. |

Notes: Kosty's Camaro used a chassis built by Pete Tropeano of Mass. By April of '70, the car was reportedly running mid-sevens with a best of 7.40/198. Confirmed 8.22 at East Haddam CT 5/31/70. Like most FCs of this period, the transmission was the weak link. |

Notes: Segrini was driving Kosty's car from at least March through June 1973. He was at Lakeland on March 4 for the IHRA Winternationals. Al qualified #11, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.13/193.53 lost to eventual winner Pat Foster's 6.83/205 in the Barry Setzer Vega. He then went to Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where his 6.58/225.00 qualified #11. The car lost fire on the line in the first round, advancing Ed McCulloch. Al was at Englishtown in April for an eight-car show. A first-round 6.68/219.51 beat Tom Prock's 7.08/181 in the "Custom Body" car, but he had trouble keeping the front wheels on the ground in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman. He was really running well at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He only qualified #6 in the eight-car field, but his 6.76 in the first round, beat #2 qualifier Dale Emery driving the "Jeg's" Camaro. That time was good enough for Low ET, but he stepped it up even further in the semifinals when he tied the track ET record with a 6.65 at 218.97 (Top Speed) while beating Bill Leavitt. Unfortunately, he had troubles in the final and lost to Russell Long, driving Charlie Proite's Charger. Al was at Connecticut for its 13th annual Memorial Day Championships. He set Low ET at 6.60 and finished runner-up to Leavitt. He failed to qualify at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals (times not reported). The following weekend (June 17), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he reached the second round before he lost to Al Hanna in the "Eastern Raider." On July 4, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He won his first-round race but lost to Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" car in the semifinals. |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. Kosty was the #1 qualifier at the Gatornationals with a 6.51, but lost in the first round, when he launched the body off his car high into the air at the top end of the track. Ran 6.44 at Columbus, 6.44 at Indy. | Kosty was at New England in July for an eight-car show. He qualified #2 with a 6.60/207, but he broke against Fred Bickford in the first round. He then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he failed to qualify. His next stop was at Maple Grove for it's All-American series race. It was a sixteen-car show and in the opening round his 6.61/165 beat Dodger Glenn's 6.66/195 in the "Frantic Ford." A 6.50/197.80 beat Jimmy King's 6.81/202 in round two, and he got an easy single in the semifinals when Ed McCulloch broke a brake caliper and was unable to stage. This put him in the final against Bill Leavitt. The two had a good race with Kosty's 6.45/217.91 getting the victory over Leavitt's 6.55/200. Then he went to York's US 30 for the Super Stock Nationals. Unfortunately, an off-pace 7.03/193.93 lost to Tom Prock's 6.95/213 in the first round. The following week (August 4) he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 6.65/210.77 qualified #3 for the eight-car show. In round one, Billy Meyer had problems and shut off while Ivanof advanced with a 6.61/208.81. In the semifinals he got a good leave and his 6.78/215.31 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.71/214. The final saw the "Boston Shaker" break and Shirl Greer won his first NHRA National event with a single. New York National hosted the PRO National Challenge race on August 18. Only 21 cars showed for the 32-car field and Kosty was one of them. But in the first round, he lost to a quick-leaving Charles Lee who's 7.10/197 beat his quicker 7.06/212.76. He qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.44/207.37. A 6.48 in the first round, beat Smith's 6.58, but the car failed to fire in round two for his race against Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." Ivanof was back at New England for the Eighth Annual Funny Car Nationals. It was a 32-car field and a first-round 6.65/188 advanced when Al Hanna driving the "Eastern Raider" failed to fire. In round two, his 6.44/214 beat Glenn's badly crossed, up Mustang II. But in round three, Tommy Grove set a track record 6.31 while beating Kosty's 6.48. Ivanof got a second shot at it when Grove suffered some burnt pistons and was unable to return for the semifinal. Ivanof replaced him, but he wasn't able to capitalize on it as he was shut off on the line with an oil leak giving his opponent, Al Segrini, a solo into the final. |

Notes: In April, Kosty was at Epping, New England, for a best-of-three match race against Tom Prock, driving the "Custom Body" car. He won all three races with times of 6.39/218.44, 6.38/207.37, and 6.70/185.56, as Prock could do no better than 6.68 on this day. He was at Englishtown for its Spring Funny Car Bonanza race, but he blew his engine on an 8.50/119.36 run in the first round. He won the race as Al Bergler had broken on the line, but he could not show for his semifinal race against eventual winner Tommy Ivo. He raced at Maple Grove for the Duitch Classic but got out of shape in the first round and shut off against Pee Wee Wallace. Kosty won the Gold Cup Championships race held at Empire Dragway in August. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.74/191.90 beat Bruce Larson's 6.93/203. Another 6.74 at 195.22 in the semifinal defeated George Johnson's 6.82/204. He stepped it up in the final, setting Low ET at 6.54/191.08 while beating Dodger Glenn in the "Frantic Ford." At the 1976 New England Funny Car Nationals, Kosty lost to RC Sherman in round two, 6.24/229 for low et/top speed over Kosty's 6.77. Kosty had a small top-end fire, but there was no damage to the car. |

Notes: Kosty started the '80 season strong. At the AHRA Winternationals, he qualified #4 and lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.050/240.64. He beat Tom Ridings and Gordie Bonin in the first two rounds before getting out of shape in the semifinals and running a 7.21 that lost to Ron Colson's 6.34 in the "Hawaiian." In March, he won the Englishtown FC opener by beating Roy Harris in the final with a 6.08. In April, he won the Spring Funny Car Bonanza at Englishtown. It was an eight-car show, and his first-round 6.35/229.00 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.84/204. In the semifinals, his 6.25/233.76 beat Stan Bowman's 6.82/214. In the final, he ran Rick Johnson in the "Custom Body" Mustang that had set Low ET and Top Speed. They both smoked the tires, and Ivanof's 7.76/223.32 got the victory. Kosty was at Bristol in May for the IHRA Springnationals. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, but he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the opening round of competition. He ran 6.11/240.00 to qualify #9 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Unfortunately, that set up a first-round meeting with the low qualifier, Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max."Beadle's 6.14/241 sent Kosty's 6.29/236.22 packing for home. The final NHRA Division 1 race was held in New England on August 17, and Ivanof qualified #6 with a 6.23/217.39. In the first round, an off-pace 6.51/205.01 lost to Rick Johnson's 6.16/232. He was back at Englishtown shortly after that for the US All-Pro Championships. It was an eight-car show, and Kosty's 6.61/210.77 in the first round lost to Harris' 6.19/200. He won his fourth Englishtown race of the season at its FC final in October. He made runs of 6.51 and 6.38 to make the final. In the final, his 6.43/232.55 stopped Al Hofmann. Where did Kosty run 241.93? |

Notes: Kosty started the season badly. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he crashed his Corvette into the guardrail during qualifying. He was Ok; the car was not. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. | Ivanof was at the '81 Manufacturer's Meet. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Ivanof qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.17/233.16. In the first round, he beat Gary Burgin's 6.77/194 with a 6.32/229.59. Unfortunately, he lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley in the "Chi-Town Hustler in round two." He was in Atlanta for an eight-car show in early April, and he beat John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting" in the first round, before losing to Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He was back in Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, but his best of 6.23/233.16 was good for the fourth alternate.
