Notes: Alamo Dragway house funny car. Johnson worked with Gene Snow until February of '76, when he took this ride. He drove the car for three months and ran a best of 6.68/210 before Bill Schifsky offered him the job of driving his car. |

Notes: Rick started the '77 season by qualifying #6 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.87. He improved to a 6.52 in the first round, to beat Tom Anderson, but he lost to John Collins in round two. Rick was a DNQ at NHRA Pomona (times unknown). Johnson qualified second at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.27/221.67 behind Gordie Bonin's 6.26. In the first round, he faced Roger Lindamood and a frayed blower belt pulled the wire from the coil and the car lost fire. Lindamood got to solo into round two. The car was destroyed in crash at Edmonton in June 1977. Johnson suffered a broken leg. Photo from the 1977 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. |

Notes: Atlanta held an eight-car show in March. The track was slick as only one car ran a "five" in qualifying. Rick's 7.48/136.15 qualified on the "bump." To show how tough the track was to figure out, Raymond Beadle could not beat his time to qualify. Rick didn't reach the final, but it was one of his first outings of the year. He also qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. A 6.20 got him the spot, but he lost early in eliminations again. Shortly after that, he stopped off at Englishtown for the K-Mart Springnationals. Johnson had a great day. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.30/229.00 advanced when Bob Seifert broke. The team was all smiles in the semifinals after Rick ran his first "5." A 5.97/244.56 (Low ET and Top Speed) beat Roy Harris's 6.43/221. He went up against the always tough Gary Burgin in the final. The two had a great race that saw Rick's 6.25/240.00 come out on top for the victory over Gary's 6.30/234. The team's next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Johnson qualified #4, but he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Dale Pulde. Rick qualified 10th at the NHRA Springnationals at 6.062/244.56 and upset Don Prudhomme and Dale Pulde before falling to Mark Oswald in the semis. An opening round 6.32/230.17 beat the "Snake," and a 6.19/234.98 beat Pulde's 6.40/229. His 'chute popped out in the semifinal while racing Mark Oswald, and his slow 6.87/128.20 lost to Mark's 6.41/222. A 6.11/233.16 qualified #15 at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. In the first round, he ran 6.12 to stop Frank Hawley's 6.23 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, Kenny Bernstein's 6.14/236 fell to Rick's 6.050/240. He faced Oswald again in the semifinal, and this time the "Custom Body" car broke a rear-end, and Johnson had to watch Mark advance with a 5.95/243. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, but he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #15 and lost in the opening round to Hawley. He started his '85 NHRA season by qualifying #8 with a 5.84/250.69 at Pomona for the Winternationals. Rick beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.66/259.81, and in round two, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.58/263.62 that beat Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/235. He failed to back up the ET for a new national record. In the semifinals, his 5.92/249 lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 5.79/253. Atlanta held an eight-car show on March 10, and Johnson qualified #1 with a 5.79/251.39. He set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 5.71/256.41 over a tire-smoking Ed McCulloch. In the semifinals, it was he who smoked the tires, and he lost to Smith's 6.36/220. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #5 with a 5.72/255.82. But in round one, he fouled against Tom Hoover. Rick was back at Firebird on April 6 for the Coors Funny Car Championships. All eight cars made two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. A first-round 6.44/237.46 lost to John Force's 5.89/202, and in his second race, his 6.02/252.10 (Top Speed), lost to Gary Densham's 6.03/231. But he made the final when Force had a blower explode in his second race and could not run the final. So once again, Johnson lined up against Densham. Once again, Gary won; this time, his 5.98/238 got him the victory over Rick's 6.06/252.10 runner-up effort. He qualified #3 at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.81/256.99 (Top Speed), but bad luck hit him in the first round, when he lost a blower belt against Ron Correnti. Things went well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he dominated the eight-car Funny Car program. Rick set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.72/254.33. A 5.76/252 beat Jim Dunn in round one, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim's son Mike with a 5.94/247 over the younger Dunn's 5.98/242. He took the victory with a 5.94/241.28 over Densham's 6.34/234 Daytona in the final. On May 11, he was at Firebird Raceway for a best-of-three-match race against Force. Unfortunately, he lost two straight with times of 5.97/244.56 and 5.93/240.90 compared to John's 5.83/243 and 5.79/240. At the end of May, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he qualified #8 with a 5.89/251.81. A first-round 6.01/245.09 beat Jody Smart, but in round two, his 6.03/242.58 lost to Force's 5.97/244. The "Hawaiian" made a rare IHRA appearance at Bristol for the Springnationals. Rick qualified #10, but he lost early. Next, he was off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 5.81/251.25 qualified #4, but a quick-leaving John Collins beat Rick's 5.90/249.03 in the first round, with a 5.93/241. He then made the long tow to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals pay off by winning his first NHRA National event. He was running well, making laps of 5.76, 5.77, and 5.79 in qualifying, so it was apparent, he was tough. Rick's 5.76 at 254.38 was good enough for the #6 spot in the show. Round one saw his 5.91/251.25 beat Smith's 6.04/249 in the "Custom Body" car. A 5.87/248.20 took care of Billy Meyer in round two, and a semifinal 5.69/250.13 beat John Lombardo's 5.86/250 in the "Blue Max." In the final, he was up against Bernstein, and the two had a good race with Johnson's 5.72/260.26 (Top Speed and a new track record) getting the victory over Kenny's 5.79/250. Invented the lovely "cowcatcher" nose piece to answer Kenny Bernstein's 1985 long-nose Ford Tempo body. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1985. He was the quickest car in the sport for most of the 1985 season until Bernstein went 5.55 at Rockingham Fall. Ran 5.985/235.60 in runner-up effort at ADRA Kansas City International Raceway 8/85. |

Notes: Rick drove the car a couple of times, ran its best 1986 times. | Rick was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event where he had Pat Galvin turning the wrenches. A best of 5.96/253.52 failed to qualify for the eight-car show. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Rick ran 5.77/255.68 to qualify #9. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier, Kenny Bernstein. Johnson's 5.92/242.58 lost to Kenny's 5.60/246. |

Notes: Captured top honors at the famed Manufacturers Meet at Orange County International Raceway, where Johnston ran the lowest elapsed time in class history, 6.72, and, in the final, beat Rich Siroonian in Big John Mazmanian's Barracuda on a holeshot, 6.89 to 6.88. Also, Top Speed at the 1970 Winternationals at 203.61. - Phil Burgess, NHRA | Jake started the season at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals on January 25. He made it into the finals by beating Dick Harrell's 7.92 with a 7.70. In round two, Don Schumacher broke a transmission and the "Max" advanced with a 7.77. He got another break in the semifinals when Gene Snow's car started leaking oil and was shut off on the line. Johnston soloed with a 9.16. In the final he was matched against Tommy Grove's strong Cammer powered Mustang. Jake ran a 7.67/198.23 that finished runner-up to Grove's 7.54/196. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 7.55/201.34 qualified #3. He lasted until round two where Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car dropped him with a 7.44 to Jake's quicker 7.40/203.61 (Top Speed). On February 15 he was at Fremont for the Northern Nationals. A first-round 7.32 beat Dick Bourgeois' 7.42 in Don Cook's Corvette. But in round two he fouled against Jim Liberman. The following week (February 22), he won the third OCIR All-Pro event. Johnston actually lost to Gene Conway's 7.33/200 in the first round, with a quicker 7.28/181.08, but he got back in on the "break rule" as Low ET loser when Dave Beebe broke. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 7.26/170.77 over a fouling Clyde Morgan. In the final, he ran Conway again and a 7.37/189.47 took the win over Gene's quicker 7.35/201. | Best NHRA times were 7.361/201.34. Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/70 |

Notes: In 1969 Gene Snow had R&B Race Cars build a narrowed Charger with direct drive and hired Jake Johnston to run the car on the match race circuit. Gene was one of the first funny car racers to seriously evaluate direct drive and was quite successful. Jake would drive the Blue Max in 1970, but would return to drive for Snow in '71 and '72. Molded in color like a boat. |
