Notes: After Ford pulled the plug on its racing support early in '70, the Ford racers were forced to "go it alone" for the season. Up until the axing of its racing operations, Ford was still doing well in drag racing. But this was a severe blow as Ford had asked Kalitta to sort out its Boss 429 for fuel racing. The car was not responding well with the 429, and at numerous races, he reverted to the 427 SOHC to stay competitive. Parts for that engine were now scarce, so after Ford bailed, he switched to a 426 Hemi to power his TF dragster and the Mustang FC. In one of its earliest outings with the Hemi, Kalitta was at New York National Speedway in mid-May for its Springnationals. His 8.59 beat Arnold Arnold in the "Super Cuda," which had transmission trouble in the first round. Rain disrupted the race, and in between, they kept trying to run it until finally completing it on Sunday, May 24. Conrad did not reach the final; he had transmission problems himself, and his best pass was 7.92/179.09. Maple Grove held a sixteen-car show on Wednesday, August 12. Kalitta lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein in the second round. Conrad was at Tri-City in September for an eight-car show. He soloed in the first round with an 8.12/123.62 when the "Hawaiian" broke on the line. In the semifinals, his 7.43/173.74 beat Roger Lindamood. In the final, he faced Pat Minick in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Pat got the win when Kalitta lost a clutch to the line. We need confirmation of the listed 6.93. (See the other entry for the Boss 429 times). |

Notes: Ran 6.86 at Detroit. | Kalitta quit running the Ford engines in '70 when Ford pulled out of racing. For '71, he unveiled a new slippery Mustang powered by a 426 Hemi. On May 27, he was at Atco for a best of three match race against Tom Sneden in the Bob Banning Challenger. Kalitta won three straight with times of 7.26/204 on a solo when Sneden broke, 7.05/189.47, and 7.06/202.70. Conrad was at Tri-City in June for an eight-car race where all eight-cars were to make three runs. In his first race, a 7.35/191.89 lost to Mike Burkhart's 7.07/207. He won his second race with a 7.12/207.85 over Frank Oglesby's 7.54/201. In his third race, he lost with a 7.26/168.22 to Gordon Mineo's 7.04/193. |

Notes: Kalitta competed at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. His 6.57 qualified #13, and he lost to Prudhomme in the opening round. Shortly after that (July 8), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where his 6.24/222 qualified #14. In the opening round, Scott's shut-off 6.53/157 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.99/205. Scott only ran one NHRA national event in the funny car this year, Brainerd. He was the fifth alternate with a troubled 9.305/88.58. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1984. |

Notes: Scott had one of 20 FC's attempting to qualify at Atlanta in April for the NHRA Southern Nationals sixteen-car field. Unfortunately, the best pass he could make was a 10.68/67.40 that was the slowest of all the FC's there. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced low qualifier Ed McCulloch, and the "Ace" banged a blower, so Scott advanced into round two, where he lost. He was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but his 6.03/235 best failed to qualify for the all-five second field. Scott only ran Atlanta on the NHRA side, but father Connie raced the entire tour. |

Notes: After not getting out of the six-second zone in '85, Scott did much better in '86. Scott qualified on the "bump spot" at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.03/235.10. In the first round, both he and opponent Johnny West smoked the tires, with Kalitta's 6.22/186.25 getting the win over West's 6.35/250. In round two, Scott advanced with a 7.35/202.06 when John Martin lost a supercharger, but he lost to Ed McCulloch in the semifinals. A best of 7.01/136.76 failed to qualify at the NHRA Southern Nationals. Shortly after that, he went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an eight-car field, and his 5.90/248.61 qualified #7. He had help from Larry Frazier at this race. In the first round, Kalitta had some trouble controlling his newly found horsepower, and the car ended up crossing the centerline in his race with Tom McEwen. He then went to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where he managed to qualify in the top half of the field with a 5.838/250.20 (#6). In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking McCulloch with a 5.804/252.10, but a 6.87/145.63 lost in round two against West. On June 15, he was at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, where he qualified #9 with a 5.888/246.64. He lost to low qualifier Mark Oswald in the first round. His next stop was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Kalitta qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A first-round 5.90/243.24 beat Della Woods' 6.24/217, but a semifinal 6.05/240.64 lost to West's 5.90/249. Near the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. He qualified #8 with a 5.903/243.50. Scott's first-round 5.924/251.81 lost to Kenny Bernstein's Low ET of the meet blast of 5.66 at 258. The following week (July 6), Scott was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. There, he qualified #5 in the eight-car field, but he got out of shape and shut off in the first round, losing to Tim Grose. At Englishtown, for the NHRA Summernationals, Scott’s 5.799/251.25 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Bernstein in round one. The best NHRA speed was 254.45 at NHRA Maple Grove. Did Scott run 258.52 somewhere this year? Was this a new body or car? (He ran off the end of the track at an IHRA race with the white body, tore up the front end. Probably a new body.) Notes: Photo from Columbus, Oh. -1987. Scott switched from his Mustang bodied car of '86 to the Oldsmobile Firenza for '87. He started the year at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show and Kalitta had problems running a best of 6.37 that failed to qualify. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but ended up as the sixth alternate for the show with a best of 5.93/229.53. | Scott would then go to the Coca Cola Funny Car Classic at the Texas Motorplex where Scott Qualified 4th in the 7 car field with a 5.815/236.40. In round 1 Scott would get a single after #7 Qualifier Gary Densham broke. In the Semis he faced #5 Qualifier Steve Hodkinson where Scott won with a 5.79/263.46, however Scott scorched the Rod Bearings in that run & couldn't make the Final against #1 Qualifier Raymond Beadle & therefore, Hodkinson would get reinstated. | At the NHRA Gatornationals, Scott qualified on the "bump" with a 5.89/246.50. An off-pace 6.21/185.83 in the first round, lost to Johnny West's 5.79/242 in the "Hawaiian." He had no trouble qualifying for the next NHRA race, the Southern Nationals, when only sixteen-cars showed to fill the sixteen spots available. Kalitta ran 8.82/155.89 to qualify #16. In the first round, he surprised West by beating him with a 5.75/240.51. In round two Scott had problems and slowed to 6.30/227.21, but still won when Don Prudhomme smoked the tires and then shut off. Kalitta's run came to an end in the semifinals where he lost to John Force. He was at Rockingham on May 3 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, but he lost to Jim Head in the first round. The next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, again had only sixteen-cars show. Scott's 6.86/149.92 qualified #12. The event was postponed one week due to rain and Kalitta was unable to return for the rain date. The rain date was on May 31 which was the day IHRA held it's Springnationals at Bristol. Scott chose to race there instead. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier, Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals where the best of 6.04/242.98 was good for the second alternate. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals at Maple Grove was Scott's next stop. A 5.92 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but in the first round, Jerry Caminito stepped up to a 5.93/241 that beat his 5.97/239.36. He followed the NHRA tour up to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only fifteen Funny Car's showed. Scott ran an easy 6.22/229.70 to qualify #12. In the first round his 6.04/233.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.00/225. RH |

Notes: Scott used a 5.40/279.06 to qualify #6 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.78/218.44 lost to Art Hendey's 5.54/260. He broke through with his first-ever NHRA national event win at the Supernationals on March 5, defeating Bruce Larson in the final. He qualified #6 with a 5.32 and set Top Speed at 279.58. Scott was one of 21 Funny Car drivers at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals attempting to qualify for the eight-car field. It was a tough weekend for Scott as he had used up two engines in qualifying. He qualified #4 and then beat R.C. Sherman in round one, with a 5.69/256.71. He defeated a blower-popping Ed McCulloch in the semifinal with a 5.85/241.65. Still, it cost him another engine, and Kalitta never showed up for his race against Tony McCallum in the final. The following weekend (May 29), he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 5.57 qualified #8. He lasted until round two before smoking the tires and losing to John Martin. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Sprignationals. His 5.50/272.97 qualified #11. In round one, his 5.59/240.32 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.33/272. His best times were a 5.281 at Ennis Fall and 279.58 (Top Speed) at Houston Spring. Photo from Columbus 1989. |

Notes: Photo from 1990 Nationals. Scott qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.38/269.94. A first-round 5.39/268.49 advanced when Jerry Caminito fouled, but in round two he slowed to 5.44/250.62 and lost to Bruce Larson's 5.31/271. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #10 with a 5.42/269.38, but he lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. Things didn't go so well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals and the best time Scott was able to run (6.72/135.48) failed to qualify. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, things went better but not much. He qualified #15 with a 5.64/257.21, but he lost to John Force in the first round. Another first-round loss came at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where Kalitta qualified #11 with a 5.56/262.00 before losing to McCulloch. |

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. | Karamesines had some firsts for himself with this car. For one, he had never before run the 426 Hemi engine, and it was his first drag car with a transmission. Kent Fuller built the 1,900 lb. car. |

Notes: Chris qualified #15 at 7.72 (unknown speed) at Gainesville in his funny car after running his top fuel car at Pomona. Unfortunately, he blew the engine on this pass and Eldon Huffman took his place in the field. Chris did not run another NHRA national event this year. |
