Notes: On May 27, Dean raced at an eight-car show at Aquasco. A first-round 8.19/174.41 lost to Ron Rivero's 7.89/189. On July 4, he took a big win over an eight-car show at Suffolk. He beat Sid Foster's 8.03/185 in the Super Ford with a 7.85/193.96, a semifinal 7.59/196.06 (Top Speed), beat Charlie Allen, who lost a motor. In the final, a 7.97/193.54 beat Lew Arrington. A match race was staged at Donnybrooke on July 20, with Dean's car facing Bob Stewart in the Ross and Stewart Fuel Dragster. The Funny Car was given a half-second handicap. Bob Stewart won the first two races with 7.18/199 and 6.98/203 times over the Nova's 8.09/188.66 and 7.92/192.34. Dean ran a 7.88/193.25 to win in the third and final race when Bob fouled away a 7.02/210. He raced at the PHR Championships on August 2, winning his first-round with a 7.97 over Ed Schartman's Cougar at 8.10. A blown transmission stopped him in the second round against Pat Minick. He faced Bill Flynn at Connecticut for a best two out of three match race on August 17. He won the first two races with times of 7.63/196.92 and 7.61/195.64 over Bill's 7.86/189 best, before he had trouble in the last race and shut off, giving Flynn a 7.70/154 win. |

Notes: This was one of the last of a dying breed, the Chevy-powered Funny Car. Dan Geare and Dean LaPole teamed on this "Rat" powered Camaro. I would've loved to hear this thing run because it was the loudest Funny Car out there from all reports. The 120" chassis was built by exhibition Engineering. But the big story about this car and what set it off from the others was the stock-sized 427 Chevy engine. It used two spark plugs for each cylinder and also had a dual ignition system. The rods were by Howards, while the 6.5:1 pistons were Arias. Crankshaft Company supplied the crank. The cam was also from Howards. Scott injectors fed the Larry Bowers-built blower. The car used a B&M prepared automatic. The rear end used 4.56 gears. The Camaro body came from J&E Fiberglass and was narrowed eight inches. Nat Quick did the paint and lettering. The Camaro weighed 1,900 lbs. Dean was at Capitol Raceway on August 21 for the Mr. FC Eliminator race. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.28/188 lost to Tom McEwen's 7.03/180. Later, he came back out to run a consolation race against Richard Tharp, who was driving the "Blue Max." Tharp shut down early in their race, and LaPole ran 7.05/193. Rick Howard photo from 1971. |

Notes: Dan Geare, Fred Totten, and Dean LaPole ran probably the loudest funny car in the sport during the '70-'71 season. Their "rat" engine used sixteen plugs as well as their own fuel injection. Unfortunately, that got them no event victories. They had a more conventional car built for '72. The chassis was a 118" Mike Lieby that had the engine placed farther out front than most. Geare built the 497 engine by starting with a 454 and adding a quarter-inch stroker from Crankshaft Co. Howards rods and cam were used along with Arias 6.5:1 pistons. Air Research built the GMC 6/71, and it was driven 36% over. Four-port Hilborn injection sat up top. George Cerny painted the J&E Camaro body. The cost was $10,000. Early runs netted a best of 6.83/209.80. Dean was at Capitol Raceway on June 10 for the Mr. Chevrolet race. Unfortunately, the Camaro broke in the first round, against Mike Burkhart. The team also ran 6.76 at NED. They were mentioned in the movie Funny Car Summer as being the 7th qualifier at the final OCIR WCS points meet with a 6.84. |

Notes: Dean was driving one of at least six Chevy-powered FCs attempting to qualify at Beeline Dragway's 32-car field for the AHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, none of them made the show. LaPole ran well at Dragway 42 in May for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #6, and in the first round, his 6.77/199.11 beat Don Prudhomme's 7.03/177. He came out and ran 6.78/193.96 over Dale Emery's 7.12/162 in round two to show it was no fluke. He still ran well in the semifinals, but his 6.81 lost to eventual winner "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.64. In July, he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. His 7.17/160.42 in the opening round beat Pee Wee Wallace but as the speed on the pass shows, he hurt the engine and was unable to return for the semifinal. The quickest pure Chevy in history. Also 6.40 at St. Louis 1973, but a long-forgotten 6.36 at 217.28 from OCIR. The car broke on the pass and did not make eliminations, so the 6.36 time did not make the press. David Ray provided us with the time slip for proof. |

Notes: In mid-May, Randy won the NHRA Division 4 race held at El Paso Dragway. Only five cars had shown. He not only won, but he set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, where his 7.27/191.23 defeated Johnny White. Randy made an easy solo in the semi-final due to the odd number of cars. He faced Frank O'Brien in the final, and Frank broke while Lackey ran 7.44/187.11 for the victory. Randy was a DNQ at NHRA Indy at 6.86/222.77. Notes: Randy did not qualify at the 1978 NHRA Cajun Nationals. Was that in this car or the Monza? |

Notes: Lagana was at Englishtown on May 5 for the NHRA Division 1 opener. He got an easy first-round win at 9.58/146.10 when Joe Jacono fouled. He caught a good light in the semifinal, and his 6.97/211.26 beat Tom Prock's better 6.94/209 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced Pee Wee Wallace in the final. Bob ended up smoking the tires, and his 7.46/214.79 lost to Wallace's 6.80/216. Bob was at Maple Grove on June 22 for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.71. That wasn't too bad, considering there were 18 FC's attempting to qualify. Bob improved to 6.64/216.37 in the first round, to beat Gene Snow's ailing 6.86/156. But an out-of-shape 7.23/163.04 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Al Segrini's 6.45/218. He also ran 6.71 at Maple Grove on 7/74. The team did not run on the NHRA tour this year. |
