Notes: On January 19th, Lane was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag racing event. Unfortunately, his best of 5.95/246.57 failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Lane traveled to Green Valley, TX, for a match race during an NHRA divisional event. Lane had to shut down after the burnout. He qualified #6 at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 6.044/232.55. Chris qualified #6 at Phoenix for the NHRA Fallnationals with a 5.824/228.77. Unfortunately, in the first round, against Tom McEwen, he got out of shape and shut off. At Pomona for the NHRA World Finals, his 5.988/230.41 failed to qualify. ET from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9 (run in preseason testing). Video Link shows 5.88 at 250.69 at a Firebird match race against the Shake N Bake jet dragster (after taking it down to the bare block between rounds!) | Photo from the 1986 SIR 64 FCs. Wasn't 64 FCs anymore by then, but they had Force's Cavalier, Holsey and Elson's Tempo, Jim Dunn, Rodney Flournoy, Beadle in the Blue Max, Pulde's no-longer-Miller Somerset, that ran a motor-baking 5.83. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Lane started the season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.24 best was the first alternate. He then went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was the eleventh alternate with a 6.00/223.82 best. Chris was back at Firebird Raceway for the Coor's Funny Car race on April 11. He beat Gary Densham's 6.05/239 in his first race with a 6.07/226.13. The car broke against Ron Fassl in his second race. Later in the month, Lane was at Sacramento for a ten-car show. All cars there were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. In Chris' first race, his 5.81/234.93 beat Richard Langson. An off-pace 6.31/216 lost to John Force in his second race. His times were not strong enough to advance him into the final. Chris ran a confirmed 5.80/240 at AHRA Spokane Finals 8/87. His 5.75/247 performances are from 1987 match races. |

Notes: In January, Chris was at Firebird Raceway for its Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. It was an eight-car show, and his 7.88 qualified on the "bump." He ran a great 5.75/221.13 in the opening round, but it wasn't enough to beat Don Prudhomme's 5.69/257. The following week, Lane was the second alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.786/244.69. His next national event was the Fallnationals in Phoenix, where he was the fourth alternate at 5.890/228.31. Chris qualified on the bump spot at the Pomona Finals at 5.620/239.74. In round one, he lost to John A. Martin, 5.49/268 to 5.815/236.03. Chris ran 5.70 at 259 in 1988 match racing action. |

Notes: Cecil Lankford and David Sien had raced a Hardy-built Camaro in '71. For the '72 season, they switched to a 120" Don Hardy chassised Mustang. The body was built by Fiberglass Ltd. Brand X #2. Dragway 42 hosted the IHRA Summernationals on August 20, and Lankford qualified for the show, but he fouled against Shirley Muldowney in the first round. Cecil was at Rockingham on September 18 for the IHRA US Open Championships. In the opening round of eliminations, his off-pace 7.09/206.42 lost to Ron Potter's 6.95/195. |

Notes: All fiberglass 109" Larson-built rectangular tube chassis. Larson ran this car on gas, alky, and fuel. These are fuel stats. He ran the car from 1966/68, then debuted his Camaro. Sold this car to Jim Maybeck, who ran it as the "Screaming Eagle" A/XS in 1968. Then Maybeck turned it over to Al Hanna late in 1968. The best times I've found for this car in 1966 on fuel are 9.2/150.00 at Englishtown, per 11/04/66 Drag Times. A 4/3/70 National Dragster Pro-File says the car went 8.50s at 167 in 1966, though they were notorious for having the years wrong. - JB (Note: Picture shows his rebodied '67 car, not the '66 as noted above. He ran each in successive years. - RT) |

Notes: Strongest Chevy-powered Funny of '69. Ran a 7.60/191.88 at Englishtown in March. Set a 187.50 Maple Grove track record. On April 13, Larson faced Frank Oglesby for a match race at Cecil County. Bruce's 7.79/191.48 won the first race of the match when Frank's Cougar broke. Bruce made a second-round single to win the match when the Cougar couldn't be repaired in time. Another match race was run in April at US 131, Martin, Mich., against Ed Schartman. A first-round 8.29/187.88 beat Ed's 8.42/172.41. Larson had transmission problems in the second round, and Ed's 8.37/173.41 won. In the third round, Larson won to take the match. In May, he raced at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational but fouled against Mel Perry in the first round. On May 24, he raced Schartman's second car driven by Arnie Behling at Suffolk for a match race. Larson beat Arnie two straight with runs of 7.80/154.10 and 7.56/180.00 to win the match. He was at Cecil County the next day for their Funny Car Manufacturers Meet. Bruce set a track record 7.46 at 193 (Top Speed), but he didn't make it past the first round as he fouled against Jim Liberman. Bruce cracked off the 7.33 at Budds Creek, Maryland, on May 30. It was during a six-car show that he set the track record. He won his first-round race with a 7.95/187.88 over Schartman's 8.11/178. In the semifinals, he ran the 7.33/189.46 to beat Liberman's 7.92/185. This put him into the final against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus." A final round 7.84/187.88 won when Lew got crossed up and shut off to 9.16/157. In June, he returned to Maple Grove for another match race with Schartman. This time, he beat Ed three straight with a best of 7.69/187.88 for the track speed record. On June 8, he ran at the New England Funny Car Championships, where a first-round single (7.98) advanced when Pete Gates lost fire on the line. In the second round, Liberman's 7.61/190 beat his off-pace 8.22/189. Another match race against Schartman was run at York US 30 on June 21. A big holeshot by Ed in the first race gave the Cougar a 7.86/182 win over Larson's quicker 7.62. Bruce lost fire on the line, so Ed raced the backup car of Al Graeber and won, giving him the match race win, but Larson wanted a final attempt at a win, so they lined up for a final race. Sure enough, Larson got out of shape, and Ed's 7.95/180 gave him three straight victories. Bruce did much better the following week on June 28 at Budds Creek, Maryland, where he beat Charlie Allen two straight. At Capitol's King of King's Funny Car race on July 16, Roy Gay's 8.03/179.28 beat his out-of-shape 8.11/180.72 in the first round. At the Cars Magazine Funny Car Nationals on July 20, a first-round 7.61/189.46 beat Ron Rivero (7.72/190.66), but in the second frame, Arrington's 7.50/192 beat Bruce's 7.77/171.16. A big win came at Sunset Dragway's fifth annual Funny Car Championships, where he set a 5.09 eighth-mile track record before beating Schartman in the final of the ten-car field. A match race against Jim Liberman was run on August 2 at York US 30, where Jim beat him two straight with two 7.56s at 191. Bruce's best was a 7.65/189. At the US Nationals, he was the top qualified Chevy with a 7.43/195.22 (qualifying sixth). He had the Chevy fans screaming when his first-round 7.43/194.38 advanced when Schartman fouled. He upset Don Schumacher, who lost a transmission in the second round with a 7.35. The fans were on their feet for the semifinal race between him and Danny Ongais. But Larson fouled away a 7.48; Ongais' 7.27 would've been hard to beat anyway. On September 21 at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships, Paul Stefansky's 7.70/175 beat him in round two when Bruce lost third gear. On October 26, he won at Connecticut over an eight-car field, setting a 7.42 track record. He ran 7.42/194.38 and 7.50/196.50 before beating the Super' Cuda in the final with a 7.48/196.50. - Ron Howard | Ted Pappacena photo of the modern recreation of the car. |
