Notes: Greg was at Rockingham in the first week of May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Nineteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, and his 7.72/192 qualified on the "bump." In the opening round, he ran a career-best (to this point) 6.60/216 but still lost to Sherm Gunn, who ran 6.18/228. He was nineteen years old. Former Gary Burgin FC. | Bill Lewis and his brothers were from Springfield, IL; they had a black AA/Gas 41 Willys in the '60s, then a few other cars after that... their first funny car was Jim Paoli's Yankee Packrat Vega. In the early 80s, they bought Gary Burgin's Orange Baron Mustang and ran it under the Parts Barn name with Bill's son Greg driving. A bad fire in Cleves, Ohio, ended their funny car days. Although Bill did buy a new car, they never ran it. - Bob Gibson, 11/19/23 |

Notes: We need the best times for this year. Gary Burgin had at least 3 of this style of Mustang-bodied cars. Wonder if this was the "Pete Rose" car that was originally sold to the Custom Body team or the second (possibly Mark Howick) version? - Tim Simplot |

Notes: First Jungle Jim Funny Car was a steel body that ran off the end of Fremont. 2220 lbs. 110" box tube AWB. Liberman started 1966 in "Hercules" Chevy II, then teamed with Lew Arrington on "Brutus" GTO, then debuted this Chevy II late in 1966. These stats are on fuel, but ran alky in car to begin with. August 1970 Car Craft interview says car ran a best of 8.19/182 in 1966, but that sounds more like 1967. I've found an 8.48/169.54. End of year for sale ad claims 8.19/177.86 best, so that is the winning combo until further info is found. | Jim Liberman was only 21 when he built this car, but he already had years of experience with these types of cars. He only took six weeks to build this Nova. A stock-sized 427 Chevy powered the car. M/T rods held Venolia pistons and the cam came from Crower. The heads were modified by Mondello. A Hilborn injector sat on top of the GMC 6/71. The rest of the driveline consisted of a TorqueFlite transmission and an Olds 3.90 rear end. Jim did all his own work including the aluminum for the interior. The second run ever on the car came at Lions where he ran 8.83/161.77 on 25%. That was really flying at that time, even more so for a Chevy when the Mopars and Fords were dominating. |

Notes: Ran 8.06/182.92 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. | Jim was at Irwindale for the New Year's Funny Car race on January 2. He qualified #7 in the eight-car show with an 8.91/166.66, but he lost in the first round. He was at Fremont on January 7 for a best-of-three match race against Ed Schartman. Ed "rattled" his cage, winning three straight. Schartman's best was an 8.14 while JJ's best was an 8.61. He competed at Pomona in the S/XS class for the NHRA Winternationals. Jim beat Pete Gates in the first round, before losing to Roger Wolford's 8.47/172 in the second round with an 8.79/167.59. On March 19, Carlsbad held an eight-car event, and 15 FCs attempted to qualify. Jim ran an 8.84 for the #5 spot. He beat low qualifier Steve Bovan in the first round, with a 9.00/164.23. In the semifinal, he ran his best (to this point) 8.45/164.23 to beat Fred Goeske in the "Hemi-Cuda." In the final, he was to run Randy Walls, but Walls had blown his transmission in the semis, so Liberman soloed for the victory. On April 1, Jim was driving the "Brutus" GTO at a match race against Malcolm Durham at Capitol. He blew the GTO's engine in the second race, and he pulled his Nova out of the truck to race against Durham in the final race. It paid off as the two had both won a race each, and in the decisive last race, the Nova hustled to an 8.75/162.74 for the match race win. Jim ran Schartman at York, Pa., for a match race on April 29. He won the first race with an 8.63/163.04 when Ed lost a rear end. In the second race, Schartman set an 8.17 track record over JJ, who lost a transmission. In the third race, Jim wrapped up the match with a blower exploding in the lights pass of 8.54/163.04 that just beat Schartman's 8.54/151. On May 10, he was at Cecil County for the Factory Showdown. He crossed the center line in the first round, on an 8.31/171.10 pass against Jack Chrisman. After his first-round loss, he came out and ran a solo pass of 8.19. It was his best to this point. Set Maple Grove track records of 8.29/172.85 on May 13. Also ran a 7.83 Irwindale track record. On May 26 at Gary, Ind., US 30 for the UDRA Championships, ran 8.40/168.59 over Roger Wolford's 8.66/168.54 in the semifinal. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Jim started his '68 season at Irwindale's New Year's day race by qualifying third with an 8.08 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 8.18/180 beat Lew Arrington's 8.40/175, but he failed to make it into the finals. He qualified #1 with a 7.88/180.72 on January 14 at OCIR for an eight-car show and his first-round 7.85/183.28 beat the New Breed. A semifinal 8.02/181.08 beat Gas Ronda's 8.33. In the final, Jim's 7.86/183.28 beat Clare Sanders' 7.71/187.91 in the Limefire. He then went to Lions for the AHRA Winter meet where he qualified way down in twelfth place with an 8.52/141.50 in the 32-car field. He had an easy first-round race, but then ran his best time ever at 7.75/184.80 in round two over Marv Eldridge's 8.08/174. In the third round, he advanced with an 8.18 and in the semifinal, an 8.05 beat Gene Snow's 8.91. He was to face Don Nicholson in the final and Jim was good enough to give Don extra time to fix his transmission he blew in the semis. But the starter signaled for the backup car of Snow to fire just as Nicholson came out of the pits. There was a lot of yelling by racers, officials, and fans, but Liberman beat Snow for the win with a 7.84. On February 24, Lions held a sixteen-car show and an 8.39 qualified Jim eleventh. Arrington ran a first-round 7.95/183 to drop his 8.39/177.86 in the first round. The following day on February 25, he set Low ET at 7.83 in the final while beating Roger Lindamood who fouled in the final at Carlsbad's South Coast Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.89/182.92 beat Steve Bovan (8.32), a second round 7.84/183.28 beat Ray Alley (8.35), and a semifinal 7.86/180.72 beat Arrington (8.20). Thirty funny cars showed to qualify on March 3 for a sixteen-car field at Irwindale and Jim qualified third with an 8.12/178.21. A first-round 7.99/174.41 advanced when Eldridge's Corvette lost fire on the line. A second round 8.18/171.10 beat Fred Goeske's ailing 8.73 and in the semis, he lost to Steve Bovan. In May at Pittsburgh for their Funny Car Championships, he made it into the finals only to lose to a Terry Hedrick holeshot. Jim's better 7.88 lost to Terry's 7.92. Another runner-up finish came on May 18 at Cecil County's Fuel Showdown. He ran well, posting a 7.79/182.18 first-round win over Bill Lawton's 7.96/180, and a second round 7.92/182.18 over Arnie Beswick's 8.17/174. But in the final a 7.85/182.92 was no match for Tom Grove's 7.65/192.70. Another win came on May 30 at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. His final round 7.88/183.28 beat the Kingfish. Aquasco held their third annual Funny Car Invitational in June and a first-round 7.98/181.80 beat a fouling Beswick, but the rest of the meet was rained out. On June 19, Liberman and Grove had a match race at Cecil County. In the first race, Tom's track record 7.52/197.36 beat Jim who fouled away a 7.85/181.08. In the second race, Tom got Jim two straight with a 7.81/193 over JJ. He did better against Nicholson who debuted his new Cougar at a match race at Capitol. Jim won the first race with a 7.66/187.88 when Don blew his trans and rain washed out the other two races so Liberman won the match. At the Cars Magazine meet on July 27, he broke on the line in the first round, advancing Tony Wahlay. He was at Detroit Dragway on August 6 where he drove off the track to avoid hitting some people that were on the track. He was OK, but the car was damaged. Jim ran 185.92 on September 22 for a Maple Grove track record in a match race against Eddie Schartman. JJ's 7.72/184.80 won the first race over Ed's 7.95/177, but another 7.72/185.92 was foiled by the evil red light. Ed won the last race and the match. Another match race was run against Larry Reyes on October 4 at Norwood, Mass. Reyes beat JJ two straight before Jim won the final with a track record 4.94 at 152.54. He then took on Bruce Larson for a best of three match at Cecil on October 6. Jim lost the first race when Larson got a good jump and his 7.64/188 held on to win over JJ's quicker 7.59/187.50. But Jim came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 7.78/187.50 and 7.81/183.66. At the Lions Funny Car Championships on November 16, Jim set Low ET and Top Speed at 7.65/187.50 and went on to win over Jack Chrisman in the final. He won both his first and semifinal rounds with 7.65's. At the OCIR Manufacturer's meet, he ran a 7.89/181.44 best, but failed to run fast enough to make the final. He qualified second with an 8.20/185 (Top Speed) at Sacramento for the Drag Racing Magazine meet, but lost to Kip Brundage in the first round. Jim won the final race of the year he competed in, the first OCIR All-Pro event of '69, which was run on 12/29/68. He qualified third with a 7.80/182.30 and advanced past the first-round when Charlie Allen broke. He had another easy run in the semis when Randy Walls fouled against him. In the final he ran his all-time bests of 7.53/193.12 to beat Don Schumacher's 7.57/196.50. — Ron Howard |

Notes: Jim filled in for an ill Pat Minick at Irwindale on December 12 at the "Toys for Tots" race. He pleased the "Chi-Town Hustler" fans by doing the same long smoky burnouts that Pat was known for. Jim qualified #6 in the eight-car show with a 7.40. He beat Jim Dunn's out of shape 'Cuda in the first round, with a 7.24/201.78. Unfortunately, the transmission refused to shift in the semifinals, and his 8.77/93 lost to Gene Conway's Corvette. |

Notes: Jim started the '71 season by running at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. He qualified #10 with a 7.54 in the sixteen-car field. In the first round, he was caught napping by Ron O'Donnell, who put a 7.27/202 run on Jim's quicker but losing 7.23/202.70. He was at Fremont the next day for its Funny Car Championships. Jim Dunn and JJ had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Liberman's 8.25/187.88 coming out on top over Dunn's 8.36/182. In round two, a 7.42/189.46 beat Rich Siroonian, but he lost in the semifinals to Gene Snow. On January 10, he was at Lions for AHRA's first of ten Grand American races of '71. Jim qualified with a 7.01 and in the first round, ran his best ever (to this point) of 6.89 at 206.42. Unfortunately, even with that strong run, he was late off the line and lost to Leroy Goldstein's 6.96/207 in the "Ramchargers" car. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Jim qualified with a 7.47 and, in the first round, ran 7.02/202.70 over John Lombardo. A 7.39 beat an out-of-shape Tom Sturm in round two, but a third-round 6.91/211.76 wasn't enough to beat Snow's 6.87/211. Early in March, Jim covered for a sick Pat Minick and drove the "Chi-Town Hustler" to win Southeastern Dragway's Spring Funny Car Championships. Late in March, he was back in his own car for a best-of-three-match race against Arne Swensen at Cecil County. Liberman reset the track record with a 7.08 at 179.64 to win the first race, and he made it two straight by winning the next race as well. Formerly listed 6.51/226.70 times, but those are very quick for 1971. We need confirmation. Jim ran a confirmed 6.78/217.39 and 6.82/201.79 at Atco. He ran 6.77/216.86 track record at NED on 9/19/71 in winning the New England Funny Car Nats and ran 6.95/211.26 (track record) at Epping on 7/04/71. |
