Notes: This is my personal favorite of all the Jungle Jim cars. Built by Romeo Palamides of jet car fame in Chicago, painted by Bob Gerdes of Circus Custom Paint, then lettered by the infamous "Mr. J," it was a pretty trick piece at the time. Previously, Jungle bought cars from various builders and even built a few himself at his West Chester, Pennsylvania shop. This was Jungle's first store-bought piece in a long time, and he decided to take it out to Ontario, California, for the 1972 NHRA SuperNationals. I don't remember the exact numbers, but I do know that one pass that weekend was Jungle's personal best at the time. - Berserko Bob Doerrer | Jim ran 6.69 at OCIR and was featured in the film Funny Car Summer. He ran a confirmed 6.54/218.97 in winning the Epping Funny Car Nationals on September 10, 1972, in the Vega. | The NHRA qualifying sheets from Ontario 1972 show that Jim was the 12th alternate (no time). However, Frank Rupert was the 9th alternate at 7.143. We need to validate this 6.44/233. | James Morgan posted this on Facebook on 1/14/26: "Jungle's" path to victory at the 1972 New England Funny Car Nationals to secure his 3rd straight FC Nats title. Round 1 7.02 @ 186 over the George's Corvette entry. Round 2 6.62 @ 218 over the Freedom Machine. Round 3 6.54 @ 218 over Fred Goeske. Round 4 6.75 @ 204 over Lew Arrington's 6.74. Round 5 6.63 @ 191 over red lighting Hill Bros. |

Notes: "Jungle Jim" had a pretty good season in '73. His new Vega had been running well. He went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals where he ran 6.58/214.79 to qualify #5 in the 32-car field. That was impressive considering there were 75 funny cars at the meet. He didn't just qualify well, he ran well in eliminations as well. An opening round 6.49/225.00 beat Frank Huff's 6.93/212 in the "King Cobra" and in round two his quick-leaving 6.60/211.76 beat Ed McCulloch's 6.59/217. Jim had another close race in round three that saw his 6.57/221.13 beat Mart Higginbotham's 6.62/218. His easiest run on his way to the final came in the semifinals where Jim Paoli smoked the tires against him. Liberman advanced with a 6.61/212.76. He faced Don Schumacher in the final and the "Shoe" had the edge. He had been running quicker and quicker in every round. His semifinal win came with a 6.42. Sure enough, Jim tried to get the power to the ground in the final and smoked the tires while Schumacher ran 6.44/220 or the win. Jim then went to Miami-Hollywood for its Funny Car Nationals. It was a sixteen-car show and Jim once again qualified #5, this time with a 6.86. He improved to 6.65/220.58 in the first round, to beat Pee Wee Wallace and in round two he beat Paul Smith in the "Fireball Vega", but Jim wounded his engine on the run and was unable to make it back for the semifinals. The NHRA Winternationals at Pomona was a mess. The track was horrible and it was rained out twice. Still, even with the tricky track conditions that kept a lot of strong teams from qualifying, Jim showed that he knew how to "read" the track and managed to qualify #14. Unfortunately, with the rain delay, Jim was unable to stay for eliminations and alternate Tom McEwen took his place in the field. He was back at Miami for its Winter Funny Car Championships. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.86 behind Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." He never ran that slow again during eliminations. He opened with a 6.72/197.80 to beat Al Marshall's 6.91/210 in the "Tyrant." Liberman had to race Marshall again in the semifinals when he got back in on the "break rule" and the results were the same. Jim’s 6.78/207.37 beat Al's 6.82/209. This put Jim in the final against Tharp. It was a close race, but JJ set Low ET and Top Speed in winning with a 6.65/216.80 over Tharp's 6.70/215. He then went to Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals where he qualified #3 with a 6.74/209.30. He dropped his ET by over two tenths in the first round, when he ran 6.50 to advance over a fouling Paul Radici. He took an easy second round win and then lost to Kelly Brown in the "Wonder Wagon" Vega in the semifinals. Jim’s 6.90/212.26 lost to Kelly's motor-blowing 6.88. Brown was unable to return to run in the final so Liberman was reinstated. It was a rematch of the AHRA Winternationals final, right down to the winner. Schumacher’s 6.55/215 beat JJ's 6.81/216.86 for the victory. In April he was at Englishtown for an eight-car show. He had a bit of luck in the first round, where his smoky 7.74/130.81 advanced when his competition, Harlan Thompson, had his transmission stick in low gear. After that, Jim ran strong. He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.44/215.31 that beat Al Segrini. In the final, he faced Jake Crimmins driving the "Swensen & Lani" Mustang. Liberman picked up the win with a 6.48/215.31 over Jake's 7.03/167. On April 28, he was at Capitol, where although he failed to reach the final, he was one of four cars that ran 6.5's. The next day he won at Atco. He then won an Funny Car show at Aquasco in early May before going to Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grand American race. He qualified #7 for the sixteen-car field and in the first round, he beat McEwen's 6.94 with a 6.82. A second round 6.70/205 advanced when Jim Nicoll broke and he shot to a 6.64/214.28 in the semifinals to beat Dean LaPole's Chevy powered car at 6.81. This put him into the final against Gene Snow. Gene had trouble and slowed to 14.11 while JJ picked up yet another win with a 6.86/200.44. Another win came in June over a sixteen-car field at Connecticut. There Jim ran his old friend Lew Arrington in the final. Jim was running too strong for Arrington on this day as JJ set Low ET in the final with a 6.59/213.27 that easily covered "Brutus" at 7.00/205. Liberman didn't fare so well at a best of three match race against Pat Foster driving the "Barry Setzer" Vega at Englishtown. In their first race Foster's 6.27/226 beat Jim's 6.55/220.58. In the second race, JJ's throttle linkage broke and he shut down on the line. No ET's were recorded in their third race, but Foster led them through at 227 while Jim crossed the line second at 218.44. It was a minor setback as then Jim went to Cayuga for the Canadian All-Pro Championships where he beat Bobby Rowe in the final with a 6.95/200.89. He lost early on July 4 at an eight-car show at Englishtown where Clare Sanders driving the "Ramchargers" Demon beat him in the first round. He was back at Englishtown a couple of weeks later for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #11 with a 6.59, but a first-round 6.84/210 lost to Foster's 6.66/208. In Nov, Jim set Atco record at 6.45. |

Notes: Summernationals Champ one year, runner-up the other. Confirm photo is from 1974 or 1975 (note says 1974 at York). | Liberman started his '75 season at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. He didn't get very far as in the first round, his ailing 8.17 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.48. Jim qualified #1 with a 6.30 at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. He made it into the second round before smoking his tires and losing to Jim Dunn. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified fifth, but lost early. A 6.33 at Pomona qualified him seventh for the NHRA Winternationals and he beat Leroy Chadderton in the first round, before smoking his tires on a 7.11/166 loss to Mike Miller's 6.50/217. Qualified at 6.306/227.27 at Ontario Finals. Was that in the Vega or the Monza? |

Notes: Lindamood's '66 car had weighed 2,500 lbs. His '66 car still used a steel body, while this new Charger used a fiberglass body to help lighten the load. Another difference was how far back the engine now sat in the chassis. The old car had the engine moved back 12 inches, while his new car had it sitting back 24" for better weight transfer. Roger was at Fontana on January 7 for an eight-car show. While he and 34 others failed to qualify, he still got Top Speed of the meet with a 182.18. He was at Detroit Dragway on March 12 for a best-of-three-match race against Hubert Platt's Mustang. It was not a good outing for Lindamood as he lost two straight. On May 10, Lindamood split the winnings with Dave Strickler at the Cecil County Factory Showdown. He had beaten Bill Lawton in the first round with an 8.70/166.35. In round two, an 8.41 beat Jack Chrisman's quicker 8.32, but this was the race that had Arnie Beswick's car roll through the guardrail and catch fire in the first round, and in round two, Don Nicholson's Comet had gotten airborne, and the body ripped from the frame. The chassis with Don along for the ride ended up in a marsh that ran alongside the track. Don and Arnie were both OK, but it was too late (12:45) to run the final round due to the lengthy cleanups, and Strickler and Lindamood split the purse. Roger was at Aquasco for a ten-car show on May 21. In the first round, he fouled away an 8.78/167.91 against Chrisman's 8.72/155. Roger was at Gary, Indiana's US 30, on May 28 for the UDRA Championships. This race ran only fuel-burning injected cars. Lindamood set Low ET at 8.33, but he lost after winning his first round with an 8.76/166.97. He ran well at an eight-car show at Martin, Mich on July 1. He fouled away an 8.56/167 in the first round against Lew Arrington's "Brutus," but the Pontiac crossed the centerline, and Roger was back in the show. He beat a somehow reinstated "Brutus" again in the semifinals to apparently make the final against "Dyno" Don. But rain interrupted the proceedings, and due to his Low ET (8.15), Nicholson was awarded the win. On July 9, Roger ran a best two out of three at Salem against Kelly Chadwick. The Charger won two straight with times of 8.83/172 and 8.84/169. Roger won the UDRA race at Alton on July 19, where he also set Low ET at 8.26. Shortly after that (July 22), he was at Cecil for a four-car show. He cut a great light in the first race, and his 8.19/172.41 beat "Fast Eddie" Schartman's 8.09/170. In his second race, Nicholson gated him, and his 8.15/176.81 lost to "Dyno's" slower 8.18/171. There were no other races run. Roger also won the UDRA Circuit race at New York Nationals. He was running 8.2's at 173 and defeated Pete Gates' Comet in the final. We listed initially at 8.34/178.57. We replaced those times with OCIR Mfg. Meet times of 8.15/184.42 at OCIR on 11/25/67. Was it the same car? Jay Howell frame, late hemi, TorqueFlite. The car was advertised for sale in very early '67. Was it still injected or blown at this point? It would determine A/XS or S/XS. The motor was set back 18 inches, so he sat beside the engine. Also had a push-button selector mounted by the seat for the Torqueflite transmission. It also had a VW front Axle. It was powered by a fuel-injected 427 Chevy and a Chrysler 8.75 rear end. |

Notes: Lindamood failed to qualify for the NHRA Winternationals. He was at Detroit's Motor City Dragway on April 20 where he set a track record 7.51/190. UDRA held an eight-car show at US 131 Martin, Mich., on May 29, but Terry Hedrick's 7.63/191 beat Roger's 7.89/189 in the first round. He finished runner-up to Dick Loehr at the AHRA Grand Nationals at Detroit Dragway. On June 8, he ran at Epping for the New England Funny Car Championships. Lindamood set Top Speed in the first round, with a 7.61/199.10 victory over Mel Perry. In the second round, a 7.86/164 beat Joe Black. Unfortunately, the Charger came up ailing in the semifinal against Jim Liberman. An 11.37 was no match for JJ's 7.95. Also, in June, Roger was at US 30 in Gary, Indiana where he was credited with a 7.37/218.70. US 30 had sketchy times and the 218 was bogus. On July 6 at Milan, Mich., Lindamood faced Loehr in a match race. He set a 7.41 track record at 200.44 in the first race over Loehr's 7.71/190. In the second race, Roger tossed a blower belt and lost. The third and deciding race was never run because of rain so the match was declared a draw. The UDRA held an Funny Car race in Gary, Indiana, on August 20. Lindamood went into the race as the track record holder at 7.37, but Gary Dyer reset it to a 7.33 in the first round. The two met in the semifinals and Dyer's 7.80 beat Lindamood's quicker 7.67. Late in August, Detroit Dragway held an eight-car Funny Car race where all cars ran three races and the winner was decided by who won the most rounds. Roger set Top Speed at 197 and won all three of his races with a best of 7.49/197 coming in the third race against Bill Lawton's 7.79/181. He tied for overall honors with Larry Reyes, who had also won all three of his races. On August 30, US 131 Martin, Mich., held an eight-car show. Roger ran a first-round 7.64/198.66 over Arnie Behling's 7.86/184, but a blown transmission in the semifinal against Gary Bolger took away any chance of victory. The next day (August 31), he raced at another eight-car show, this time in Minneapolis. An 8.33/195.22 lost to Bryan Teal's 8.35/151 in the first round, but a stroke of good luck came his way in the form of Behling breaking a crankshaft in his first-round win. As Low ET loser in the first round, he was reinstated and raced against Teal again in the semifinals. This time Roger's 7.40/200 advanced over Teal into the finals. There he faced Pat Minick, but another blown trans gave him the runner-up purse. The next day (September 1), they did it again at Minneapolis and Roger was upset in the first round, by a 7.87/185 from Della Woods. To be fair, he did have more transmission problems during their race. Another runner-up finish came on September 7 at the Memphis Funny Car 500. He broke in the first round, against Jack Chrisman, but again got back in on the break rule. He faced Chrisman again in the second round and beat him with a 7.44 track record. In the final he met former track record holder (7.54), Bobby Wood. It was a close race with Wood’s 7.45 beating Lindamood's 7.50. At the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on September 21, Roger's first-round 7.33/198 beat Tom Grove's track record 7.30. In the semifinals he lined up against Jim Liberman, but after his burnout, he lost a rear wheel giving Liberman a solo. - Ron Howard | Also ran a confirmed 7.41 at Milan. - Danny White |

Notes: Roger qualified #1 at Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals with a 7.18. Unfortunately, he lost early in eliminations. Lindamood was at Epping on May 29 for a best of three match race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. He lost the first two races to JJ, but Jim blew his 392 Hemi in the second race and was done for the day. Roger had his problems getting traction as the Challenger was running low eights at 189. In June, he was at Green Valley Raceway for another best-of-three match against Ronnie Hunter, who was driving KS. Pittman's Firebird. It was a strange race. Hunter won their first match with a 7.70. He shut down in the second, giving Lindamood an easy win, but Roger crossed the centerline while running 7.92. Usually, that's a disqualification. But in this event, he was awarded the win. The Firebird broke on the line in the last race, and Lindamood won the match with a 7.63. |

Notes: Lindamood had a new Challenger built for the '71 season. It was 400 lbs. lighter than his '70 car. The new Logghe-built chassis was smaller and lighter than last year's version, and he did away with his cooling system and no longer carried two batteries on board. Roger started his '71 season at Orlando for the Drag News Championships on January 4. He qualified #6 with an 8.69 on the poor strip surface. In the first round, he picked up to an 8.26/176.17 to beat Bruce Neff. But in round two, he lost a motor on the line, giving Larry Arnold a single. Roger was Aquasco for the President's Cup Championships. It was an eight-car show. He actually lost in the first round, when his 7.17/178.92 failed to get past Tommy Grove's 6.96/210, but he got back in on the "break rule" when "Jungle Jim" Liberman broke after winning his first-round race. He made good of his second chance by beating Dick Rosberg in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro in the semifinals with a 7.11/207.84. He was up against Mike Burkhart in the final, and Mike's 7.38 finished runner-up to Lindamood's 7.06/207.84. At Connecticut in July, Roger set a 6.86 track record. In mid-September, Lindamood was at Suffolk for the Dixie Dag Classic. In the opening round, his 6.82/211.26 defeated Tony Wahlay. He then set Low ET in round two, where his 6.80 advanced when Tom Grove's car blew a rear end. He stayed strong in the semifinal, where he ran 6.83/208.80 over Gene Snow's 6.95. He faced the "Fighting Irish" car of Dick Rosberg in the final. Dick's times had been slower all through eliminations, but he came up with a 6.81 in the final to upset Roger's 6.86 runner-up effort. The following week (September 19), he was in New England for its big 32-car FC Nationals. He beat Tim Kushi in the first round before losing in round two. Over the '71 season, Lindamood won 21 eight-car events. He also ran a 6.80 at New England Dragway at Epping, NH, on 10/71. Notes: Roger Lindamood's '72 car continued to run a stock-stroke 426 Hemi. The chassis was built by the Logghe Brothers. Al Bergler did the tin. The engine used a stock Chrysler crank that was balanced and clearanced. M/T rods and Venolia 5.2:1 pistons were used. The cam was an Isky flat-tappet and Isky also supplied the lifters and valve springs. The pushrods were stock. Also stock were the intake valves, but Donovan valves were used for the exhaust. Kenyon Porting Service cleaned up the heads, but they were not ported or polished. The blower manifold and drive came from Cragar and Gary Dyer set up the GMC 6/71 blower. To get the 90% nitro into the motor, Enderle injection was used. To get the power to the ground, it went through a Lenco two-speed back to a Halibrand quick change rear end. The paint and lettering were done by Dennis Rickleff. According to a Rodder and Super Stock article, Roger had run a best of 6.69/224 at the time. | Also ran 6.84 at Connecticut. Ran a 6.82 first-round loss to Bobby Wood (6.78) at Warner Robins in 10/72, but Roger got back in on the break rule only to fall to the Trojan Horse at 6.60/223. Roger won Lubbock Dragway's season finale over Dave Condit and the L. A. Hooker with a 7.45/201.45 in 10/72. |

Notes: The 1972 Challenger was the first Funny Car Roger ran with the Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars. The Gold Agency handled bookings. This picture is from 1973, when the flames were added to the hood because of a fire at the NHRA Winternationals. Dennis Ricklefs painted the car in CA. Confirmed 6.73/223.60 at Lebanon Valley Coke race. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.61/225 bests. Lindamood was at Lakeland in September for a Coca-Cola race. He ran as well as 6.87/214 and reached the final. But in the final, he had to shut down as he had lost oil pressure. Roger watched as Charlie Therwhanger soloed for the victory. |
