Notes: Dennis was at Rockingham at the end of April for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #7 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.08/209. An opening round 6.54 beat Pete Miner's 7.60 and in round two, his smoky 7.49/167 beat Dave Settles' troubled 8.69/96. Unfortunately, Dennis hurt some parts on the run and was unable to return for his semifinal race against Dale Pulde. |

Notes: Loehr ran this car, his fourth and last Mustang funny, for a year before selling it to Bob Veselka (Corpus Christi, Tex.). Veselka ran it for a few months in 1970 as the "Going Texas Mustang." Like many funny car pilots, Loehr abandoned floppers and moved to Pro Stocks in 1970. - RT | After running a 392 Hemi-powered Mustang with great success in '68, it was a little surprising that Dick went back to the temperamental SOHC Ford engine for '69. It almost paid off, as near the end of the season, he had one of the strongest funny cars in the nation when it was running right. The Chapman-built 125" wheelbase chassis was unusual as it was built so that Dick could relocate the engine forward or backward in the frame. A hydraulic cylinder did this. This could be done right from the driver's seat while staging the car. The idea was to aid in weight transfer depending on the traction at the strip on which he was racing. The driveshaft was splined to fit all engine locations. The SOHC engine used M/T rods and 6.5:1 pistons. Crew Chief John Skiba ported and polished the steel heads, and a pair of Isky 650 cams were used. Skiba also prepared the blower. A Hilborn injector fed the 68% nitro mix to the engine. Fiberglass Ltd. made the Mustang body, and the whole car weighed 1,800 lbs. | Dick qualified at the March Meet at Bakersfield and beat Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round, with a 7.90/188.67. He broke in the semifinal, however, letting Rich Siroonian single into the final. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify at the HRM Championships. He also failed to qualify on March 22 for an eight-car show at Lions. In April, Loehr was in Connecticut for a best-of-three match against Frank Federici in the "Shark" Corvette. The Mustang was having bad handling problems, and he lost two straight. He was still ironing out the bugs in his car when he was paired up against Jim Liberman for a match race at Aquasco on April 20. Liberman beat him two straight for the match race win. He had a rematch against JJ on May 14 at US 131 Martin, Mich. Jim's 7.80/188 won the first race when Dick fouled away a 7.86/189.06. Dick won the next two races to win the match with runs of 7.72/186.72 and 7.77/185.94 over Liberman's 7.95/189 and 7.76/188. He lost in the first round, on May 16 at the UDRA race at Union Grove, when Clare Sanders beat him in Liberman's second car. On May 29, back at US 131 in Martin, Mich., for another UDRA race, Loehr got sideways in the first round and lost to Pat Minick's 7.72/184. At St. Paul, Minnesota, on June 1, they held a four-car race with the winner being decided by the number of rounds won. Dick won his first race with a 7.75/184.80 over Clare Sanders' 7.91/184. He got crossed up and shut down to an 11.09 to lose to Terry Hedrick's track record 7.56 at 192.70. In his third race, a 7.59/193.54 beat Don Schumacher's out-of-shape run. Hedrick was declared the winner for winning three rounds, while Loehr had won two and was runner-up. He went to Detroit for the AHRA Grandnationals and bagged a win, running a first-round 7.61 and a second-round 7.71 over Fritz Callier. In the final, a 7.72 beat Roger Lindamood for the title. A 7.82/196.07 qualified him fifth for the NHRA Springnationals on June 15, but Callier's 8.03/172 beat Loehr in the first round. This was followed by another win on July 3 at US 131 at Martin, Mich., for a UDRA race where he set a 7.36 track record and Top Speed of the meet at 202.78. The next day (July 4), he won another UDRA race at Cordova, setting another track record at 7.41. On July 6, a match race was run at Milan against Lindamood. Roger won the first race with a track record 7.41/200.44 over Dick. At the PHR Championships, a 7.67/189.47 beat Hank Clark's Rebel in the first round. In round two, he advanced when Tom McEwen broke. But in the semis, a 7.49/202 by Minick beat Dick's 7.54/191.48. At New York on August 17 for the AHRA Nationals, Dick Harrell ran a 7.48/200 in round two to stop Loehr's 7.68/190. He ran a 7.35/200.44 at the US Nationals to qualify fifth, but he slept on the line in the first round and lost to Jack Chrisman's 7.66 with a tenth quicker 7.56. An early '70 issue of National Dragster had an article on Loehr, which mentioned that he had run a best of 7.20/205 in this car. Best NHRA national event times of 7.354/200.44 at Indy. Notes: If Loehr drove this car in '69 it wasn't for long. His primary rade was a new Logghe-chassis '69 that year. Basics on this car: B&N '68 Mustang fiberglass body on a 124" Racing Enterprises (of Michigan) chassis. Stock displacement 392 hemi, Torqueflite trans by Art Carr. Car was subject of cover feature in 3/68 SS&DI and also a 6-page feature in 4/68 Drag Strip. - RT |

Notes: AA/GS convert used 25% nitro loads. On March 21, Manuel fed nitro to John Lombardo's Corvette to run in OCIR's Corvette FC Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in the opening round, his 9.19/149.75 won when Don Cook crossed the centerline. He improved by over a second to 8.18/175.09 in the semi-final, but it wasn't enough to beat Gene Conway's 7.63/181. |

Notes: Replaced converted 69 flip top Corvette gasser which was sold to George Kirby in 1971 who resumed its operation as a blown gasser. The Challenger was a legitimate flopper that ran in late 70, but was burned to the ground. It was replaced in 1971 with a Camaro featuring a horrid paint scheme depicting a black widow with the Isky logo adorning its abdomen. This car too burned up, but Lombardo suffered severe burns prompting a temporary surrendering of driving chores to Steve Plueger. | John was at Irwindale on July 17 for a sixteen-car show (but only 14 cars showed). He qualified #12 with an easy 8.46/160.42. A first-round 7.77 beat Dave Condit's 8.20 in the "L. A. Hooker" and in round two he got around Larry Fullerton's Maverick. Unfortunately, John's Challenger broke and was unable to run in the semifinals. A week later (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. Once again he worked his way into the semifinals before breakage took him out. A first-round 7.50/169.81 advanced when Barry Kelly fouled against him. In round two, Ed McCulloch also fouled against him, throwing away a 7.26/193. But in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a transmission against Condit. He was at the OCIR Anniversary Race on August 15, but his first-round 7.57/192.30 lost to Arnie Behling's 7.19/208 in John Mazmanian's 'Cuda. |

Notes: John debuted his new Mustang II by winning the OCIR season opener with a 6.31/214.28 in the final over Jake Johnston in the Pisano and Matsubara Monza. He wasn't entered in the event, but he made a few test runs. When the field was one car short, the track asked if he would fill in. John did and mentioned to the officials not to expect much from his new car. Lombardo set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.30/200.44 over Tripp Shumake in the "Sundance." He ran another 6.30 at only 197.36 in the semifinals to beat Jim Dunn. It was a great debut. He went to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #14 with a 6.319/217.91, but he had troubles in the first round, and shut down to 8.65 in a loss to Ed McCulloch's 6.37. On March 6, he was at Irwindale for its Night Opener. Eight cars were there, and they each made two passes, with the two overall Low ET cars meeting in the final. Lombardo wasn't close to running well enough to make the final as he smoked the tires on both his runs, losing both with times of 11.66 and 13.47. John also qualified for the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.534/219.51 (#13), but he smoked the tires and lost to Shirl Greer in the first round, at 7.21/167.28. He was back at OCIR in March for the Fox Hunt Funny Car event. Twenty-seven cars showed for the sixteen-car field. John's 6.61 qualified #7. He improved to 6.51 at only 175.78 to win over Gary Densham, who broke. A second-round 6.35/207.85 beat Larry Arnold, but the car developed a small fire on the line in the semifinals, and he shut off against Chris Lane. His next stop was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 opener. His 6.51/172.41 qualified #8, and in round one, he ran 6.41/214.79 to beat Dave Uyehara's 6.44/223. He made an easy solo pass in round two, but for some reason, he was not in line for his semifinal race against "Jungle Jim" Liberman. John qualified at the NHRA Springnationals at 6.545/211.26. In round one, he lost to Don Prudhomme, 6.26/209 to 6.504/226.13. John qualified #12 at Indy at 6.356/226.70. He lost again in round one, this time to Gary Burgin, 6.12/221 to 6.597/186.72. John qualified #12 at Seattle as well with 6.352/226.13 numbers. Ed McCulloch was his roadblock in round one, at this race, taking a close 6.27/231 to 6.29/220.04 decision. John again failed to get past the first round at the World Finals. He qualified #14 at 6.428/216.34 and lost in round one, to McCulloch again, 6.41/228 to 7.72/118. John switched from the Donovan Hemi to a Milodon early the following season and immediately showed improvement. We originally listed 6.26 for John this year. Can anyone confirm that he ran that time? |

Notes: John ran 6.63/187.10 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. He qualified #13 at 6.39/217.39 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals and lost to John Collins in the first round. On April 9, John was at Irwindale testing his new Milodon engine he had just installed in his three-year-old car the morning of this race. He had no intention of running in competition, but the field was one car short. He ended up winning the race. He ran 6.28 and 6.23 on the way to the final. He ran Eddie Pauling, who had set Low ET with a 5.97 in Johnny Loper's Arrow. The two had a good race, but John's 6.09/216 got him the victory over Eddie's 6.25/208. John was low qualifier at the Cajun Nationals at 6.42/213.27. He fouled and lost to Billy Meyer in the first round. John qualified #6 at Columbus at 6.190/220.58 and won round one at 6.27 over Stan Bowman's 6.37. He lost to Meyer again in round two, 6.30 to 6.37. John won the NHRA Division 7 race on May 5 with a 6.12. (BP was in attendance at that race.) Qualified #10 at Indy at 6.202/231.95 but lost to Gary Burgin in round one, 6.02 to 6.59. Qualified #8 at Seattle at 6.38/216.86 and improved to a 6.30/211 win over Gary Saindon in round one. But Gary Cochran beat John in round two. Qualified #10 at the World Finals at 6.22/228.42 but could not start in round one, and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.06. John did win the OCIR Funny Car 500 in May (Bill was there). And he won the 64-car event in Irwindale with a 6.09. | At the '77 64 FCs at SIR, Lombardo did some dry hops in front of the spectator side stands. - Joe Moore | John sold this car to Dennis Geisler late in the year. |

Notes: Lombardo started the '78 season by winning the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the final with a 7.25. He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.25/236.22 qualified #2 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.23/238. But in the opening round of eliminations, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 6.93/205.47 loss to Tim Kushi's 6.47/223. Lombardo then won the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont in April. He set Low ET at 6.18 and a 6.33/213.77 grabbed the win when John Force broke in the final. John also set Low ET and Top Speed while qualifying #1 for the eight-car field at the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 6.27/231.95. But once again, he smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Tripp Shumake. Not long after that (June 4), he was at Portland for the NHRA Division 6 race. Only six FC's showed, and he qualified #1 with a 6.36/202.24. A 6.33/213.27 beat Nick Harmon in the opening round, and he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He won that by beating Twig Zeigler's 6.52/221 in the final with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.25/229.00. In Mid-June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. John ran 6.24/227.84 to qualify #8, and an opening-round 6.28/222.77 beat an out-of-shape Tom Anderson. In round two, Bob Pickett's 6.46/221 fell to Lombardo's 6.29/229.59. The car stayed consistent in the semifinals, running a 6.26/233.16, but it wasn't enough to beat Tom McEwen's 6.17/230. On July 1, he won the OCIR Nitro Championships, setting Low ET at 6.05 along the way. He made a stop at Seattle for a best of three match race against Gordie Bonin. Lombardo won two straight with a 6.23 best. John then went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.12/240.64 qualified #4, and he beat a fouling Tom Hoover in the first round. In round two, he ran another 6.12 at 236.84 to beat Gordie Bonin, but the car slowed to a 6.33/216.34 in the semifinals that lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.19/236. On July 29, John was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.20, and he set Low ET in round one, where his 6.07/223 defeated Dennis Geisler. Unfortunately, the car broke in round two against Dave Condit John had a great US Nationals, running steady 6.0s in eliminations, but lost a step and the match to Prudhomme in the semis. Best NHRA ET was 6.057 at Indy, where he also duplicated his 240.64 best. |

Notes: John was at OCIR in mid-August for its Summer Showdown race. It was only a four-car show, and the cars had one shot at qualifying. Unfortunately, John broke and blower belt and failed to qualify. After replacing the belt, he came back out and ran against Hayden Proffitt's jet. His 6.65/214 lost to the jet's 6.47. In the first week of October, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals. He was a little "off" on that day as his 6.39/220.58 (eighth alternate) failed to qualify for the sixteen-car field. At OCIR for the NHRA World Finals, things went better where his 6.17/225.56 qualified #14. But he slowed to 6.67/159.85 in the opening round and lost to Jim Dunn's 6.15/231. Lombardo was back at OCIR in November for its Manufacturer's Meet. He ran 6.54/193 in his first race, losing to Tom McEwen's 6.26/232. In his second race, he ran 6.16/229 over Ezra Boggs, who broke in the "Moby Dick." |

Notes: Photo from 1982 US Nationals. John was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where his 5.94 qualified #5. Unfortunately, in round one, he lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." In August, he was at OCIR's Summer Showdown event. Ten cars ran the first-round, with the eight lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. John easily made it as he set Low ET of the meet with a 5.91/233 to beat Mert Littlefield. He advanced with a 6.11/222 over Craig Epperly in the semifinals, who was driving for Joe Pisano at this race. In the final, he faced Billy Meyer. Both had problems, but Meyer's wasn't as bad as his 8.21 beat Lombardo's 10.17 for the victory. Shortly after that, he was at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. He qualified #6 in the eight-car field, and he smoked the tires to a 6.16/227.27 in the first round, that lost to eventual winner Frank Hawley's 5.89/242 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." John also lost in the first round, at the NHRA US Nationals. He ran 5.94/249.30 to qualify #10, but he lost to Tom Anderson in the opening round. NHRA ran the Golden Gate Nationals at Fremont, and the Pro classes were just eight-car shows. Lombardo out-qualified many "big name" drivers with his 5.97/240.64 (#5). But an off-pace 6.17/214.28 in round one, lost to Hawley's 5.85. | Won the 8-car, open nitro Funny Car field at the June Nitro Championships. With CC Amos Satterlee on board, he won the event, 6.10/212 1st round and a 2nd round 5.98 after two burnouts. I don't remember who Lombardo beat in the June OCIR final, although at that Summer FC-TF race, he was among three 5-second FCs in the open-8 car field. The other 2 were Meyer and Pisano/Epperly, who made about 3 afternoon passes. Tire shake got both cars in the final. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Lombardo began the year at Pomona in the Number 8 spot with a 6.140 240.84. John defeated John Force to win the 1983 NHRA World Finals at OCIR. Force smoked the tires almost immediately in the final but recovered and went after Lombardo, who began to spin the tires about 200 feet down the track. The two raced to the finish line together, with Lombardo taking a narrow 6.32 to 6.32 victory. - NHRA | Best ET of the year at 5.880 at the World Finals at a best NHRA national event speed of 243.24. Where did John run 249.30? Set Low ET and #1 qualifier at NHRA Atlanta at 5.933. | As mentioned, John qualified #8 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the opening round of eliminations, his 6.12/232.55 beat Tom Hoover's 6.33/220. In round two, he smoked the tires to a 6.21 that lost to Tom McEwen. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, John's 5.93/238.72 qualified #8. in the opening round, his 6.01/236.84 beat Tim Grose's 6.05/235. But in the second round, his 6.05/239.36 fell to Dale Pulde's 6.02/241. He qualified #1 at Atlanta for the eight-car field at the NHRA Southern Nationals with a 5.93/232.55. He then beat Tom Anderson before losing to Al Segrini in the semifinal. Lombardo failed to qualify at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was another eight-car field, and his 6.17/231.93 failed to crack the 6.08 bump. Things went better at Columbus, where his 6.08/238.72 qualified #13. Still, a first-round 6.10/236.22 fell to Segrini's 6.03/241. He also suffered a first-round loss at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where Don Prudhomme got him in round one. John qualified #10 there with a 6.02/240.64. Shortly after that, he was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Those eight-car fields were tough to qualify at, and this one was no different. He ended up as the second alternate with a 6.31/227.27 best. He was disappointed at Indy, where his 6.02/234.37 best failed to qualify for the all-five second show at the NHRA US Nationals. |

Notes: John's year: Pomona Winters - Q15 at 5.993/236.22, R1 win over Tom McEwen, 5.966/245.90 to 6.35/172, R2 loss to Al Segrini, 5.92/250 to 6.617/188.28; Columbus (Rick Howard photo) - 4th alternate DNQ at 6.224/231.95. John teamed with Steve Plueger on a Dodge Daytona and drove it at the World Finals. Formerly listed a 5.88/249.30 for John in 1984. Where did he run that? Were those 1985 Blue Max times (where he went 5.88 at Brainerd)? We are removing them until we get confirmation. |
