Notes: Lombardo took out top end blocks on Thursday, damaged left side of body, repaired and white primered. Car went back to all blue, unsponsored in '86. | John qualified #15 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.09/234.98. A much improved 5.82/243.90 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Tim Grose's 5.73/247. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.89/240.51 qualified #10. Unfortunately, in the first round, Lombardo smoked the tires and shut off against Mark Oswald. John made it past the first-round at the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. He qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/244.16 meaning that he would face low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in round one. He got around Bernstein and also beat recent Winternationals winner Grose with a 5.93/244.16. In the semifinals, he broke a transmission and advanced Ed McCulloch into the finals. He qualified #9 again at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at State Capitol Raceway, Baton Rouge. A 5.95/222.49 got the spot. This time both he and John Force smoked the tires in their first-round race and Force's 6.07/237 came out on top over the "Blue Max's" 6.32/244.56. | At the NHRA US Nationals John qualified #5 with a 5.741/254.16. He would face #13 Qualifier Jim White in round 1 where Lombardo smoked the tires & watched White take the win.

Notes: John was the fourth alternate at the Winternationals at 6.294/217.60. That was his only NHRA national event of the year. Did the team run a Beretta body at that race or this Trans Am?

Notes: Charlie Proite had one of the first beer sponsors in drag racing, with Pabst Blue Ribbon Beer coming on board for '73. The 114" chassis for the car was built by S&R Race cars. The engine was a Sid Waterman built 426 Hemi that was bored and stroked to 482 cubic inch M/T rods were used as well as Venolia pistons. The cam of choice was by Crower. A solid mounted Dana rear end was used. The car cost $25,000 to build. Long debuted Charlie Proite's new Charger at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified the car #23 with a 6.81/207.37. He picked up to a 6.52/217.91 in the first round, to beat a crossed-up Leroy Goldstein who was driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. But in round two, he slowed to 7.00/210.28, which lost to Jim Paoli's 6.61/213. He was a DNQ at the traction plagued NHRA Winternationals (no times available but no quicker than the 8-second zone). He then went to OCIR for the third All-Pro race. Long failed to qualify for the eight-car field, but he got into the show as an alternate when Gerry Glenn broke in John Lombardo' Vega. Russell didn't hang around long, as in the first round, he shut down at 13.87/55.58 in losing to Mike Halloran's 7.24/141. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Night Opener race. It was an eight-car show, and he qualified #5. low qualifier Tom McEwen had problems against him in the opening round of eliminations and shut off. Russell advanced with a 6.59/215.82. The "Pabst" Charger got crossed-up in the semifinal, and Long shut it down while Sush Matsubara advanced into the final. He also DNQ at the Gators, finishing as the 7th alternate (times unknown but no quicker than 6.75). Russell drove Proite's car to a win on May 13 at the NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail. He qualified #1 in the eight-car show with a 6.92 and ran a first-round 7.00/199.11 over an out-of-shape Paul Radici. In the semifinals, a 6.82/202.24 beat Dick Rosberg. In the final, a 6.74/208.81 beat Al Segrini. But at the NHRA national event held in Columbus in June, Long had no luck, ending up as the 8th alternate (no quicker than 7.11). Russell was at Edgewater in July for its fifth annual Funny Car Invitational. It was an eight-car show, and in the opening round, his 6.83 beat Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max" who tossed a blower belt. In the semifinal, Long was becoming a bit of a "giant killer" as his 6.56 (Low ET) beat "Jungle Jim" Liberman's 6.81. After knocking off two crowd favorites, the underdog "Pabst Charger" faced Ron Colson, driving another favorite car, the "Chi-Town Hustler," in the final. Colson kept an upset from happening as his 6.77/215 got the victory over Long's 6.89/206.42. The team finally got some NHRA national event luck at the Summernationals. Russell ran 6.553/222.22 for the 7th qualifying position. He lost in round one, to Dale Emery, who ran 6.56/228, as Russell struggled to a 10.84/117. Russell drove Don Schumacher's Wonder Wagon to a DNQ at Indy but was back in the PBR Charger in Ontario for the World Finals. Unfortunately, he was the 11th alternate (no times available but slower than 6.775).

Notes: While Russell Long was waiting for Charlie Proite's new Charger to be finished, he jumped into the "Tom and Jerry" Mustang for the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.83 qualified #2 behind Butch Maas' 6.60 in the M/T Grand Am. Unfortunately, the car broke in the opening round, giving opponent Gene Snow a solo into round two. This was the only race he drove this car at as he was behind the wheel of Proite's "Pabst Blue Ribbon Charger" at the AHRA Winternationals.

Notes: Dennis Fowler was one of the first to run the new Monza bodies in Funny Car competition. Driver Russell Long had it out in January at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where the team failed to qualify. They also failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, running best times of 6.58/199.11. The car took some time to sort out, but it ran well at an eight-car show at Irwindale in March. Long drove it to a 6.59/220.04 to beat Gordie Bonin in the first round, and he soloed in round two with a 6.52/219.51. This race had all cars run two rounds, with the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. As good as his runs were, they were not good enough to make the runoff. Sundance was one of the cars chosen to run on the Coca-Cola Cavalcade tour. At the Englishtown Cavalcade race, Long's 7.23/179.28 lost to Dick Bourgeois' 6.97/211 in the first round. In July, Atco held a Cavalcade race, and Russell's troubled 9.17 lost to Bourgeois' 7.20/221 in the opening round. Portland held its big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, and all the members of the Coke Cavalcade drivers raced there. The format was three rounds, and then the two lowest ET cars met in the final. Russell ran 6.52/217.39 in his first race to beat Richard Rogers' 6.98/203, but after that, the car broke, and he could not make any more runs. He followed the Northwest swing to Edmonton, Alberta, for the Funny Car Spectacular event. In the first round of racing, his 6.95/182 lost to Raymond Beadle's 6.56/200 in the "Blue Max." A 6.96/142 got him a win in round two when Roger Lindamood shut off early, and in the last round, he ran an easy solo when Al Bergler's Mustang II broke. The following week found the "Sundance" team in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was another 32-car show with the two Low ET cars going to the final. In Russell's first race, the car got completely sideways, and he shut off to a 10.86 loss against Fred Goeske's 7.03. An off-pace 7.39 lost to Mike Miller's 6.48 in the "Green Elephant" in his second race, and the track's 11:00 pm curfew kept him from making a third run. On the Cavalcade tour, Fremont held a Coke race that had Long run 6.60/191.48 over Gordon Mineo and 6.80/194 over Paul Radici to reach the finals. There, he went up against Gary Bolger, driving the "Tyrant" Mustang of Dale Creasy. Unfortunately, Long crossed the centerline and had to lift while Gary picked up the victory with a 6.60. It should be noted that while the car wasn't consistent, it did show signs of strength with occasional 6.50s, which were very good for the time. At OCIR's Anniversary race, Russell lasted until the second round before losing to eventual winner Jake Johnston in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Vega. His second NHRA national event of the year was the NHRA Fallnationals at Seattle, and he qualified #11 with a 6.639/215.31. He got out of shape in the first round and lost to Tom McEwen. At OCIR's East-West Championships, Russell beat Don Prudhomme in his first race with a 6.74/212.26, but his engine blew on the line against McEwen in his second race. More problems came for the team at Irwindale's 32-car show in October. Long broke in the first round, giving Tom Prock a solo. The team was a DNQ at the NHRA World Finals in Ontario (times not available). Dennis was from Alaska, but he housed the car in Phoenix. | I distinctly remember Russell and this car being credited with a 6.30/230 early in the 1975 season. We talked about it when he raced at the Thompson, Ohio, Coke Cavalcade race (which he lost in the final to Gordon Mineo). The team was cool, allowing my then 10-year-old brother Tim to polish the car. Who can validate my old memory? - BP - The following is from Hot Rod Magazine, 6/75: This is the very first all-new Monza Funny Car to make the scene for the 1975 racing season, the "Sundance" of Dennis Fowler and Russell Long, based in Phoenix, Arizona. The car is based on a chassis by S&R using a 118-inch wheelbase and solid suspension all around. The engine is an aluminum hemi with a ½-inch Velasco stroker crank, BRC rods and pistons, Lunati cam, D&D pushrods, Waterman and Donovan valvetrain parts, Waterman heads, Milodon oiling system, Littlefield blower at 48% overdrive, Enderle injection, Cragar manifold and drive, Crower fuel pump, Cirello magneto and Cragar headers. The drivetrain consists of a Crower steel flywheel and 'Glide setup with a Lenco 30% underdrive two-speed, Summers axles and Airheart brakes on the 3.89 rear. The Monza, which opened the season with 6.30s at 230 mph, was designed by Kenny Youngblood, executed by the Paint'N Place, with Bob Behrens aluminum work in the J&E Fiberglass body. - JM

Notes: Russell was runner-up to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham on April 4. He beat Ray Sherman in the semifinals with a 6.84/208.33, but his final round 6.90/197.80 lost to the "Max's" 6.38/226. Earlier, Long ran 7.14 and 6.81 to reach the final. Sacramento held a Funny Car race, and Long picked up the victory there. His final round 6.31/221 beat Dave Condit's 6.37/221 in the "L. A. Hooker." The team also competed at the IHRA Dixie Nationals in Atlanta, but Russell lost early there. At the end of July, the team was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. All the cars made two runs, and Russell ran 6.58 and 6.71. | We need to confirm that Russell ran 6.18/237 this year (or is that a mistaken duplication of Ron Colson's similar numbers?)

Notes: This was Russell Long's last ride. Russell filled in for a sick Billy Meyer at OCIR in February for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. He lost to Pat Foster in the first round.
