Notes: John was running well in mid-'75, qualifying on the pole at Green Valley for the AHRA Grandnationals with a 6.49 before losing an engine on the line in the first round. He qualified #2 at Kansas City for the AHRA Drag Nationals. He ran 7.16/167.28 in round one, and a 6.94 advanced in round two when Al Vanderwoude fouled. In round three, a 7.65 got him into the semifinals when Vic Cecelia broke in Charlie Proite's "Telstar." In the semifinals, his 6.97 lost to eventual winner Tom McEwen's 6.69. |

Notes: AKA Trouble Maker Too. - DD | Bitten by the funny car bug, Lunati lengthened the chassis of his home-built AM/SP Devin to fit a '65 Corvair, casting the shell himself in fiberglass. The Devin's injected 377" Chevy was retained; the car was said to weigh 1,700 pounds, very light for the day. The car was said to be capable of high 8's. - RT | Lunati faced Preston Honea at Lakeland in September for a best-of-five match race. Joe won the first race with a 9.81/143.71, while in the second race, Honea won with a 9.85/145. But Joe came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 10.09/142.44 and 9.78/147.38. |

Notes: Lunati was at Connecticut in May for a best of three match against Bill Lawton. He lost the match but did make a good showing. He was back in Connecticut on June 11 for a best of three match race against the "Ramchargers." Lunati held the track speed record going into this match at 170.45. The report did not mention who was driving the Dart as both Jim Thornton and Mike Buckel were both behind the wheel at various times during the year. The week after this match, Jim was driving. In their first race, Joe's 8.56/159.01 beat the "Rams" 8.80/166. But in the next two races, the Dart was able to beat the Camaro and win the match while resetting both the ET and speed record at 8.42/174. Lunati was runner-up to Doug Thorley in Funny Car Eliminator at the '67 NHRA Nationals. Turned 8.200/179.28 to the winner's 7.83/192.30. - RT |

Notes: Also ran 7.04 at Portland in 1977. | Tacoma longshoreman Paul Luppy ran a bobtail Mustang II with a Donovan 417, steel heads, 6.71; he hardly ever made it down the track. There have been altered bodies on Funny Car Chassis, but this one handled like an altered with a Funny Car body. Luppy was at the '77 FC Opener licensing in this Mustang in grey primer before the yellow paint job. Bonin over Terry Capp's primer 🐎 that day. 6/71 & Crower. Original model Donovan 417 (with the letters stamped out of the side). Ran until an ND-reported fire at the '84 August Funny Car meet at SIR, long after other NW nitro FCs had given up the ghost. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Mid-size, all-steel Olds F-85 ran a lightened stock Olds frame with the front wheels moved up 7" and the rear a whopping 17." 400-cube Olds was bored and stroked to 496." GMC 6/71 blower, upright 4-hole Hilborn injection, Turbo-Hydramatic 400 trans, dropped front axle, leaf springs in back, Olds rear, 3,020 pounds. Following a towing accident towards the end of the '66 season the damaged driver-side sheetmetal was replaced and the previously red car got a new coat of black paint. Car occasionally ran gas, but generally ran a 25 percent load of nitro. (Note: Times quoted not necessarily the car's fastest. "1967 New Funny Cars" magazine says car ran 180+ mph, likely in 1966.) - RT |

Notes: Toward the end of the '66 season, after their popular altered-wheelbase 4/4/2 was damaged in a towing accident that destroyed the trailer and Olds 98 tow car, Lutz & Lundberg rolled up their sleeves and took the opportunity to update the 4/4/2. Damaged sheet metal was replaced, the engine was lowered in the chassis, and a new black paint job (with gold leaf lettering) replaced the red coat from the previous season. The car was raced through the '67 season and put up for sale at the end of that year's Indy Nationals. (Driver Jim Lutz later recounted sitting in staging waiting to run when a Mustang funny caught a gust of wind and went airborne in the lights, killing driver Del Heinelt). On its run, the 4/4/2 got loose on the top end too, leading to the immediate decision by the team to get out of funnies altogether.) The car was later found in an Indiana barn and restored in the early 2000s. (Note: Times quoted are for the '66. While fairly representative, they are not necessarily the car's fastest, quickest.) - RT |
