Notes: Roland Leong's new "Hawaiian" for '71 featured a 120" Logghe chassis. It used a Keith Black 426 Hemi with a 1/2" stroker crank. M/T provided the rods and Forgedtrue the pistons. The cam was an Engle. The Larry Bowers-built blower sat on a Cragar manifold, and Cragar also supplied the blower Drive. Up top was an Enderle injection unit. The transmission was a Lenco two-speed. | New driver Butch Maas was at OCIR for the second All-Pro event on January 24. He lost to Gene Conway's 7.18/212 in the first round, with an off-pace 7.28/197.80. Irwindale held a show just before Pomona and Maas set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.02/210.28. He shut down on the line in the semifinal and lost to Jake Johnston. Things went a lot better at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where the "Hawaiian" won for the second consecutive year. Butch qualified #5 with a 7.12. A 7.17/204.54 in the opening round beat Kenney Goodell, while in round two, his 7.26 beat a wheelstanding Larry Reyes driving John Mazmanian's second 'Cuda. He did an easy solo in the semifinals when Gene Snow could not run due to a blown rear axle. Maas faced the feared "Ramchargers" car driven by Leroy Goldstein in the final. Both ran their best times of the weekend, but Maas' 6.932 (Low ET) at 212.76 got him the victory over Goldstein's 7.08. He did not run the AHRA Winternationals, but the "Hawaiian" team was in Las Vegas for the Stardust Open. A 7.10/206.98 qualified #1, but in the first round, Butch fouled away the Low ET of the meet, a track record 6.92. Butch continued to qualify well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where he landed #2 in the sixteen-car field. He lasted until the second round before losing to Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker." On March 21, he was at Fresno for a best-of-three match race against Don Prudhomme. Butch won the first race with a 7.08/211.76 over the "Snake's" 7.23/214. Prudhomme returned to even the score in the second race with a 6.93 to beat Maas' 6.99. The final race saw Maas get a holeshot and win with a 6.88 over Prudhomme's quicker 6.85. The match race was run on the Gatornationals date, so neither driver ran there. Another win came at the Northern Nationals at Fremont. The race had been rained out from March 14 and was rescheduled to April 4. Maas qualified #1 with a 6.77. It was supposed to be an eight-car field, but only six cars showed. A first-round 6.86/207 beat Larry Fullerton, and in the semifinal, he got the "odd-lot" solo and made an easy pass. He faced Conway in the final, and his 6.84/217.38 got the win easily over Conway's off-pace 7.64/126. The following week (April 11), he was in Seattle for the Northwest National Open. It was another eight-car show, and Butch qualified #1 and lasted until the semifinals, where his 6.78/213.76 lost to Prudhomme's 6.67/221. He made it into the finals a week later at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. It was an unusual race as he lost to the Chevy-powered car of Charlie Therwhanger in the final. Mopars had been ruling the Funny Car division, so when Therwhanger's 6.91/208 beat Maas' 7.02/201.79 in the final, the Chevy fans went nuts. Still, the runner-up finish was another good showing. Butch thumped Jim Liberman's Camaro two straight at St. Thomas in May. In the first race, he set a 6.97 track record at 197, and an ailing (dropped a valve) 7.50/137 was enough to beat the Camaro in the second race. US 131 held a Funny Car show in mid-May, and the "Hawaiian" was there, but Maas' first-round 6.89/213.38 lost to Gary Dyer's 6.77/209. On May 27, Maas was driving one of the four FCs that showed at Minnesota. In his first race, Butch's 7.25/168.53 beat Tommy Grove's 7.69/173. In the second race, he faced Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max." Both ran 7.04 (Maas at 199.11), but Tharp got to the finish line first. The final race had Tharp go up against him again. This time Maas had his rear axle break, and his left rear slick bounced off the car. Butch got it stopped, OK, but he obviously lost the race. Butch was at Edgewater on July 2 for an eight-car show. The first round was one he would never forget. He was lined up against Prudhomme, and the two were off on a great race when the "Hawaiian" lost a motor and went into a fireball. The fuel tank exploded, and the 'chute burned off. The onboard fire extinguishers failed, and Maas spun the car out to bring it to a stop. He got out of the burning car, and the crew attempted to extinguish the fire. Unable to do so, they knocked the burning body off the chassis. That saved the chassis and what was left of the driveline. Butch suffered third-degree burns on both his wrists.

Notes: Butch was low qualifier at the 1972 NHRA World Finals (32-car field-22 cars competing) with an ET of 6.61/214.79. He ran 6.64/203.61, 6.566/222.77, and 6.57/219.51 in beating Charlie Therwhanger, John Dekker, and Ed McCulloch. He lost in the fourth round, after an engine explosion, to Jake Johnston (Gene Snow Charger), who ran Low ET of the meet at 6.51/222.77. That was Butch's last NHRA national event of the year. | Info from January 1973 issues of SS&DI and Popular Hot Rodding magazines. - Tom Nagy

Notes: Leroy started the '73 season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere. The car was still in primer for this event. A 6.86 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. An opening round 6.79 beat Gerry Glenn's 6.94 in John Lombardo's car. A second-round 6.86/217.91 lost to Mike Van Sant's 6.82/212 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. Car owner Roland Leong always did well at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The '73 version of that event was very different. The track was horrible, and it was rained out for two weekends. Still, Chadderton qualified the "Hawaiian" #5 in the sixteen-car field with a 7.48/208.81 on the first weekend(Feb.3). By the end of qualifying, his time had dropped to #8 as more cars had gotten a hold of the track. In the opening round, his slipping and sliding 7.69 fell to Ed McCulloch's 7.25. At the third OCIR All-Pro race, Leroy qualified #2 with a 6.73 in the eight-car show. In the first round, both he and Mert Littlefield smoked the tires heavily, with the "Hawaiian" coming out on top. In the semifinals, Leroy was to face Sush Matsubara, but the Charger failed to fire. The team's next stop was at Irwindale's Night Opener race. This was an eight-car show, and in the first round, Chadderton crossed the centerline while racing eventual winner Matsubara. At Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals on March 11, Leroy qualified #10 and beat Tom McEwen, who crossed the centerline in the first round, and then got an easy round two win. In the semifinals, he lost fire and advanced eventual winner Don Schumacher, into the final. Leroy did not compete at the NHRA Gatornationals, but the team was at Fresno Dragway on March 18 for the Winter Race of Champions. It was another eight-car show, and his 6.83 qualified #4. Unfortunately, he lost to Gary Ormsby in the opening round. The following week, it was back to OCIR for the final All-Pro race. This was a sixteen-car field, and Leroy's 6.83 qualified #8. A 6.99/204.54 beat a troubled Joe Lee in the first round, and in round two, his 6.96/210.77 beat Sant's 7.10/208. But he fouled against the eventual winner Tom McEwen, in the semifinal. Early in April, the "Hawaiian" bunch was at Firebird Raceway for a best of three match against McCulloch. In their first race, Ed fouled, handing the win to Leroy. In their second race, the Charger's reverser failed, and McCulloch made a solo run to even the match. But Leroy won the third and deciding race with an 8.63 when Ed fouled a second time while running 7.91. At Seattle for the Northwest National Open, Chadderton had his reverser break after his burnout in round two, advancing McCulloch. The car shown here was stolen in the summer of '73 from a hotel parking lot in Gary, Indiana. Also ran 6.53 at Portland.

Notes: Mickey Thompson's Grand Am sure stood out from the other FC's in '73. It was big, mean, and sexy. The team started the season at Irwindale early in January for its Grand Premiere race. Butch set Low ET in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.60. He had over two-tenths on the second qualifier(6.83). He then opened up eliminations by beating Ed McCulloch with a 6.70. Another 6.70/209.79 defeated Bob Pickett's 6.85/219 in the "L'il Demon."Maas had his closest race in the semifinal, where his 6.77/204.54 just outdid Mike Van Sant's hard-charging,6.80/214. His final-round opponent was Jeff Courtie, who had lost to Jim Dunn in the semifinal but got back into the show on the "break rule."It looked like the MT team would win easily as Jeff had not gotten into the sixes to this race. As they went to line up for the final, Butch did his burnout and the Hemi let-go. Somehow, Dunn got on to the starting line, and he then raced Courtie and won. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, Maas ran 6.66/223 to qualify #10 in the 32-car field. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut off, giving opponent Gene Snow an easy ride into round two. Butch qualified this car no. 1 at '73 NHRA Winternationals with a 7.18/216.34 but lost in the first round when the car broke against Kenny Bernstein. He qualified #5 at the '73 AHRA Northern Nationals and won his first-round match-up with Kelly Brown, running 6.48/213.88, but could not make the second round because of breakage. Qualified #7 at the '73 NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.54/231.95 but suffered a severe fire at the end of that Friday qualifying run, preventing him from racing in eliminations. After that fire, Butch spent time in the hospital recovering from burns, and when Mickey Thompson rebuilt the car, Dale Pulde was driving.

Notes: This is Al's '73 Vega with the new '74 front end for 1974. After having Tom Prock ('71) and Butch Maas ('72) as drivers of his FCs, Al returned to the wheel in '73 and drove his own cars until he retired in 1982. Al ran 6.59 at Cecil County, 6.69 at Gainesville, and 6.43 at Indy. The best NHRA times were 6.439/220.04 at Indy 1974. Set Low ET at Capitol Raceway Coke meet at 6.56. Al competed at the Canadian FC Nationals held in Edmonton in August. It was a sixteen-car show, and in round one, his 6.94 defeated a crossed-up Ron O'Donnell in the "Damn Yankee." In the second round, both he and his opponent, Paul Radici, got out of shape, but Bergler got to the stripe first. In yet another slipping and sliding race, both he and Roger Lindamood were all over the track, but the "Color me Gone" got to the other end first. Shortly after that (August 10), he was at Irwindale for its Grand Prix race. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, Al made an easy solo pass when Gary Burgin's car failed to fire. In round two, he shut down early and lost to the eventual winner, Mike Halloran's 6.57. At Indy, for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, he ran 6.48/220.58 to qualify #14. In round one, his 6.47/218.44 beat Tom Hoover's 6.53/217. He gave the eventual winner a good race in the second round, where both drivers ran 6.43, but the "Snake" got the win. Al was at Englishtown in Oct for its Fallnationals. It was a fourteen-car show, and in the opening round of competition, his 7.58/139.98 beat Jake Crimmins' 8.29/175 in a tire-smoker. In round two, he got an easy solo when Fred Forkner's car got stuck in reverse. He ran 6.91/205.01 to beat Joe Jacono's 6.94/184 in the semifinal. He faced Al Marshall in the final, and Marshall was tough as he had set Low ET at 6.52. Bergler made it easy for him by lighting up the tires. Marshall ran 6.75/214 for the victory.

Notes: Wayne started the '73 season off right by winning the Spring Drag Race held at Atlanta Speed Shop Dragway in February. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.24 advanced when Cliff Brown broke. He then set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.90 that beat Ron Colson's 7.12 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In the final, he took out "Jungle Jim" Liberman for the money.
