Notes: Al won the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lebanon in July. He ran a strong 6.52/218 in the semifinals to beat Gordon Mineo. In the final round, he ran 6.53/219.50, which secured the victory over Mineo, who returned under the "break rule" when David Ray crashed in the semifinals. Also ran 6.52 Maple Grove. |

Notes: The Creasy's big, wild and bulky fastback was a rarity in the flopper ranks. A relatively budget effort utilizing a full-size '69 Ford Torino (built, but never raced by Phil Bonner) and a stroker early hemi / TorqueFlite combo. The car won NHRA's Division 3 Funny Car Points Championship in 1971, in spite of the car's infamous (and frequent) tendency to go any direction, but straight. - RT | Turned a 7.31 ET at US 30, Gary IN, 9/71. Runner up to Kelly Chadwick at NHRA Division 3 Bowling Green on 9/19/71 when Al crossed the center line. |

Notes: Ran 6.63 at Indy. | Al was at Dragway 42 in August for the IHRA Summernationals. In the first round, his 6.71/217.39 beat Ron Potter's 6.86/212. In the second round, he lost a transmission on a 7.25 pass that fell to Dale Pulde who was driving Mickey Thompson's Vega. Shortly after that, he won the Quaker City Funny Car race. It was an eight-car field and Marshall ran 6.81 and 6.72 (over the "Hawaiian”) to reach the final against Richard Tharp driving the "Blue Max." Both ran 6.72, but Al got the win light. |

Notes: Martin was at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. The quickest the car had ever run before this race was 5.97 at the '85 NHRA Winternationals. Here he had a new crew chief, Amos Satterlee, tuning the car. The first pass saw John lose two rods on a 6.09/245.23, but he came back out later and ran 5.83/252.10. That was impressive enough, but on yet another pass, he ran 5.78/247.25 to qualify #2 in the eight-car field behind Kenny Bernstein's unreal,5.66. In the first round, Brad Tuttle lost fire, and John soloed with a 5.83/241.28, but he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Tom Hoover. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.74/242.58 qualified #5. He beat Tuttle in round one, with a 5.80/248.61, but he got out of shape and shut off against Bernstein in round two. Atlanta held an eight-car show in March, and John qualified #4 with a 6.26/238.72. The track was tricky as Hoover qualified #1 with a 5.99. Martin's 6.02/233.76 in the first round, advanced when Doc Halladay lost reverse after his burnout. In the semifinals, his 6.00/243.24 beat Paul Smith's 6.07/236 in the "Custom Body" car. This put him into the final against Hoover. Tom overpowered the track and smoked the tires while John motored to the victory with a 6.02/243.90. Things didn't go so well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where the car's best of 6.06/241.02 was good for the first alternate. But the race was rained out and postponed one week, and qualifiers Dale Pulde and Smith left for Darlington to run the IHRA Winternationals. This put John back into the show. A 5.88/227.15 in the first round, beat Halladay's 6.15/240, but in round two, his blower exploded, and he lost to Scott Kalitta. The team was back at Firebird Raceway in April for the Coors Funny Car car show. All cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET's meeting in the final. Martin did not reach the final as a first-round 6.46/176.81 lost to Johnny West's 6.10/241 and a 6.14/233.76 in the second round lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.71/252. He lost to Force again at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Martin qualified #12 with a 5.93/241.67, but Force got him in the first round. The team had a good showing at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet in May. John qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.85/249.30. He beat Jim Dunn in round one, with a 5.76 at only 222 and a tire-smoking 6.78/199 in the semifinals beat Mike Dunn's out of shape 7.87/117 in Joe Pisano's car. In the final, he was up against Force again. The results were the same, Force's 5.92/251 got the victory over Martin's 6.01/229.59. It was then off to Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. A 6.04/238.15 qualified #11. John was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. He qualified #14 with a 5.87/240.57. An off-pace 6.06/218.97 lost to Billy Meyer's 5.74/242 in the first round. He skipped going to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, going to Spokane instead for the ADRA World Finals. There he lasted until the semifinals before shutting off and losing to Gary Phillips. Martin was back on the NHRA tour for the Chief Nationals at the Texas Motorplex, but his 5.86/236.46 failed to qualify and was good for the third alternate. He ran much better at the NHRA Fallnationals, qualifying in the top half of the field with a 5.82/246.83 (#7). A first-round 5.91/242.06 got around Jim Dunn, but a 6.03/214.54 in round two lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.80/254. Back at Pomona for the season-ending NHRA World Finals, he ran 5.77/250.00 to qualify #10. Unfortunately, on the run, the blower exploded, and it tore the body off the car. He was OK but could not run in eliminations, and the first alternate, Tim Grose, replaced him in the field. Martin ran well enough to finish fourteenth in the NHRA points standings. Photo from Indy 1986. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. Qualified #4 at ADRA Spokane 8/86 at 5.885/238.72. |

Notes: Keith Martin lived in LA. He was from Norman, Oklahoma. His cars were "Shyster" because he was a full time lawyer with only spare time on hand. He typically built one engine to go and one gutted engine for show. His driver had to use the one engine for the whole season because the other engine was not really a spare engine having had no pistons, cam, valves, etc. He built the transport trailer in his garage. The spare engine sat in the trailer to make it look like he had a spare engine for the competition. The others he was running against could sometimes afford two or three engines for the weekend while his engine had to last the whole season. During the off season he would build up a new motor which had to be used throughout the next season without any major repairs. He quit driving himself because he was 6 foot 6 and weighed in at over 300 pounds. He just built the cars and, when he could, would attend the races to tune up the engine and do minor repairs. His daughter, Kathy, would tag along. She still has a Smokey and the Bandit Firebird with shaker hood in her garage gathering dust. Considering the low budget and part time effort, he did quite well against the full time professionals. He built a few engines for other people including some in NASCAR. He quit racing when it just got too expensive to compete. - Albert Clark (cousin) | Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. |

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. Ken raced at Seattle on April 27, when they pitted four FC's against four AA/GD's. Ken's 8.81/176.41 lost his first race to Dave Grassi's 7.53/198.76. A much improved 8.10/180.80 beat Don Cope's dragster in his second race. On August 10, he ran at the Woodburn Funny Car Festival. A first-round 8.61/174.08 beat Warren Gunter's bug, but an 8.06 by Gas Ronda in the semifinal put him on the trailer. |
