Notes: Photo from SIR, Kent, Washington. Confirmed 5.375/274.22 at Seattle 1988. Where was the 5.312 run? | Paula ran a career best (to this point) of 5.52 at 232.67 to qualify #13 at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals. Unfortunately, in the first round, she had a rod let go and she lost to Ed McCulloch. On June 2, Martin was at Tulsa for its Springnationals. It was an eight-car show and Paula won her first-round race over Frank Kramberger with a 5.88/245.90. In the semifinals, she recorded another 5.88 at 247.25, but lost to the eventual winner John Force's 5.73/251. Paula bypassed the NHRA Springnationals, but she was at Martin, Michigan's US 131 track for its Funny Car Nationals. The race was run with eight-cars all making two passes and the two lowest ETs meeting in the final. Paula won her first race with an out of shape, shut off 9.08 that beat a fouling Jerry Caminito. In her second race, she ran a 6.08 that lost to Richard Hartman's 5.76. Her times failed to get her into the final. She did not go to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, but she was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A new career best of 5.45 at 259.14 qualified #13. Once again she lost to McCulloch in round one. She followed the NHRA tour to Denver for the Mile High Nationals where a 5.83/229.18 qualified #11. In the first round she had problems and shut off to a 7.45/117.18 that lost to Del Worsham's 5.55/255. At the end of July, Paula was at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals. A 5.52/254.45 qualified #11, but an off-pace 6.02/167.91 lost to McCulloch in the first round. A week later she was at Seattle for the NHRA Northwest Nationals. Once again she made the field; this time a 5.51/258.10 qualified #13. Martin lost early though, falling to Worsham in the first round. She again qualified #13 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals with a 5.65/249.51. In the first round both she and Al Hofmann smoked the tires and her 6.38/165.65 beat Al's 6.79/145. A 5.40/257 by Force in round two stopped her 5.58/251.46. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, she qualified. But it wasn't easy and she destroyed two superchargers trying to make the field. A 5.47/261.02 qualified #15 and she repeated that number in the first round, with a speed of 263.08, but she lost to Force's 5.32/274. |

Notes: Times confirmed for Sonoma 94, but need to find out if the other times Paula ran this year were in this car or the Trapper Racing car. OR. IS this the Trapper Racing car, just with other sponsorship? | Paula was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where she was the sixth alternate with a 5.75/248.13 best. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, she qualified on the "bump" with a 5.57/261.02, but "windowed" the engine block and was unable to run in eliminations. |

Notes: Matsubara started his season at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #4 with a 6.93. In the opening round of competition, his off pace 7.29/210.28 lost to Jeff Courtie's 7.08. Sush was the top qualifier at the second OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.62 (Low ET). He ran 6.76/213 to beat Tom McEwen's 6.79/215 and 6.71/213.77 over Jim Paoli's 6.73/200 to make the finals against Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer owned Vega. He lost the final to Foster's 7.03. He competed at the AHRA Winternationals at Phoenix, where his 6.50/215.82 qualified #2 in the 32-car field behind Foster's 6.40. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 11.47/57.80 loss to Richard Tharp's 6.55 in the "Blue Max." Sush once again qualified #1 at the third OCIR All-Pro race with a 6.66 (Low ET), and once again, he reached the finals, but this time lost to Tom McEwen's 7.72/104.77 with an off pace 8.08/159.01. Traction was horrible at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, and the team failed to qualify there. After being on such a lousy racing surface, the team was happy to be going to Irwindale for an eight-car show. But as luck would have it, Irwindale had the rocket car of Bill Fredrick's running there as well. Bill had some problems and dumped rocket fuel all over the left lane, making it useless. In the opening round, Matsubara's 6.95/213.27 won when Leroy Chadderton slipped and slipped the "Hawaiian" across the centerline. Russell Long also slid all over the track in the "Pabst" Charger in the semifinals while Sush took an easy pass down the right lane to win. The track officials decided that they ran the final with both cars making one run each down the right lane, with the car that got the lowest ET being declared the winner. Bill Leavitt was his final-round opponent, and Bill ran 6.83/206. Sush then made his run and ran 6.64/224.43 for the victory. Things returned no normal at Fresno Dragway's Winter Race of Champions. The track was fair, and there were no issues. It was another eight-car field, and Sush qualified #5, meaning that he would have to run the low qualifier, Dave Beebe, in the first round. Dave had driven the "Mr. Ed" Satellite to an excellent 6.47 in qualifying, which was over two-tenths quicker than the rest of the field. So in round one, Sush tried hard, but his 6.85/211.26 finished far behind Beebe's 6.56/219. Shortly after that (March 24), the team was back at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. The final race featured sixteen-car fields. A 6.91 qualified Sush in the #11 spot. In round one, he picked up to 6.84/220.04 to defeat Mert Littlefield's6.87/205. In round two, Mike Halloran shut off against him, and a 7.49/193.96 advanced. In the semifinals, his opponent Dave Uyehara had problems in the "Pure Hell" car and shut down to 13.80 while Matsubara cranked out a 6.89/215 to win. He faced Tom McEwen in the final. Tom had not run better than 6.96 in eliminations. But the "Goose" ran a 6.69/222 in the final to beat Sush's consistent 6.86/221.67. Back at OCIR on April 14 for an eight-car show, Sush led the qualifiers with the only six-second time, a 6.96. The time held for Low ET, but that was it as Sush failed to reach the final there. He was at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships a week later. This was a 32-car field. He beat Stan Bowman in the opening round, and then a 7.02/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Dale Armstrong in round two. But in the third round, his 6.92/220.04 lost a close one to Mike Van Sant's 6.91/216 in the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang. At the NHRA Division 7 race at Bakersfield, Sush set Low ET on Saturday while qualifying #1 with a 6.87. He had a flash fire on the run and had burned his neck and hands. He was treated and released and ran the car on Sunday. A 6.96/220.04 beat Mike Snively in the "Mr. Ed" car. But he smoked the tires hard in the semifinal and lost to Danny Ongais. A week later (May 26), it was back to OCIR for the Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race. Sush's 6.68 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car show, but problems arose in the first round when after doing his burnout and backing up, the car got stuck in reverse. His opponent, Gerry Glenn, soloed into round two. Sush qualified at NHRA Indy at 6.486/231.95 and then went to the semis, where he lost a close one to eventual winner Ed McCulloch, 6.480/225.00 to 6.550/229.59. The team was a 6.629/223.32 DNQ at the Ontario World Finals. |

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. Ran 6.654/218.44 at Pomona, 6.474/207.85 at Indy, and DNQ (no time) at Ontario for their only NHRA races. | Sush ran at the Irwindale Grand Premiere on January 12. A 6.57 qualified #3 in the sixteen-car field. He won his first-round race with a 6.55/217.39 over Gordon Mineo, and in round two, his 6.68/219.51 (Top Speed) beat Dave Condit in the "L. A. Hooker" Mustang. He broke against Don Prudhomme in the semifinals. Sush qualified #3 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.39. In the first round, a 6.46/211.76 beat Henry Harrison. Unfortunately, he broke on the line in the second round. At the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.65/218.44 qualified #15. A first-round 7.10/198.23 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.52/220. The team failed to qualify at Bakersfield. On April 6, they were at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American. Unfortunately, Matsubara lost to Gene Snow in the first round. The team then went to Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. An opening round 6.81 beat Gary Densham, but in round two, Sush smoked the tires hard and lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. | Formerly listed 6.32/237.46 best times for 1974. Notes: Matsubara was at Fremont in January for the New Year's Day Funny Car race. He beat Tom McEwen's tire smoking 8.41 in the first round, with a 6.99, but in the second round, he lost to Jerry Ruth. He was unable to run at the AHRA Winternationals due to a motorcycle accident the week before the race. Jake Johnston filled in to drive for him. Not sure what transpired, but Jake ended up with the ride for the rest of the year. |

Notes: Chi-town's Bud Roche and Don Mattison of "GuZler" rail fame bought both of the former "Dodge Chargers" factory exhibition cars that had debuted in 1964. They replaced the blown gas-burning 480" wedge, TorqueFlite combo with a fuel-burning 392 Chrysler direct-drive recipe. One car was destroyed at Cordova, IL, late in the '65 season. The second survived a decades-long disappearance and has recently been fastidiously restored. - RT | Bud Roche drove it once at its debut at Cordova, Ill., did a 360 just off the line, and immediately retired. Guest rail shoe Doc Halladay then spun it on the second attempted run. The car initially had a Positraction rear end, which made it uncontrollable. It was replaced with a solid rear, and Caudle took it to this 10.21/150 in October 1965. On the very next run, the car went end over end at least four times, demolishing the car for good. Earlier drivers who attempted to handle the car in 1965 were Ron O'Donnell and John Kranenberg. - DD |
