Notes: Ed failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (not sure what car he was driving), where the weak 7.74 "bump" was attributed to bad track conditions. On May 3, he was at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Division 6 race. He was the only FC driver to show up. On May 24, only three cars showed for the NHRA Division 6 race at Bremerton. Ed reset both ends of the NHRA record in qualifying with a 7.19/211.76. After an easy "bye run," he beat Kenny Goodell in the final with a 7.52/210.28. At the third NHRA Division 6 race held at Mission Raceway in BC, five cars showed, and McCulloch won again. An easy 7.31 advanced in the opening round, and he got a solo in the semifinal. He faced Frank Hall driving Jerry Ruth's Camaro in the final, and Ed set Low ET and Top Speed while winning at 7.12/212.76. Shortly after that (July 25), he was at OCIR for the PDA Championships. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the sixteen-car field at 7.11/205.46. In round one, he defeated Johnny Wright with a 7.17/205. But he fouled away a 7.26/193.46 in round two against John Lombardo. He then went to Kent, Washington, for the Seafair Nationals. Ed made runs of 7.45,7.12 and 7.19/208.60 to reach the final against Ray Alley. Ray's times were more than two-tenths off McCulloch's times throughout eliminations. Somehow, Alley stepped up to 6.99/199 in the final, but he still lost to Ed's 7.05/210.95 (Top Speed). This car's last event was in Seattle in August at the final NHRA Division 6 race. Ed's 7.33/207.84 (Top Speed) beat Kenny Martin, who broke in the opening round. But in the semifinal, the Duster's transmission failed, and he lost to Goodell. So after leaving the race with the trailer in tow, the trailer caught fire due to faulty wiring. The tow car, as well as the trailer and race car, went up in flames. | Cover and 5-page feature in 10/70 issue of Drag Racing USA. - RT

Notes: This 1971 Woody car replaced the heavy '70 Cuda. Qualified second at Indy 9/71 with a 6.59 and won the race, defeating Dale Pulde with an ET of 6.64 at 223.32 mph. The win at the 1971 NHRA Nationals was the first for Ed McCulloch and was a springboard for his dominating 1972 season. The photo was taken late in 1971 at Ontario during the NHRA Supernationals and shows the car shortly after signing Revell as a sponsor. "Soon after the '71 Indy win, McCulloch garnered sponsorship from model kit maker Revell. Piloting a Dodge Demon-bodied Funny Car, McCulloch ran under the RRRRRRevellution name." - Mopar Connection Magazine (https://moparconnectionmagazine.com/gallery-champion-spark-plugs-power-the-ace-to-u-s-nationals-gold/).

Notes: Ed had the most dominant funny car during 1972, winning the NHRA Winternationals, Gatornationals, Springnationals, and Nationals. He also won the Bakersfield March Meet, driving his former car, the Jim Murphy owned "Holy Smokes" Cuda, and was the runner-up to Don Schumacher at the NHRA Summernationals. He also won the huge Seattle Seafair Funny Car Nationals in August. This car made its debut at Fremont on January 2 for the New Year's Funny Car race. On its first full pass it ran a 6.9. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.94, but he lost to Bill Leavitt in the first round. At the AHRA Winternationals at Beeline, 40 Funny Cars tried to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.71 to qualify #2. He beat Henry Harrison in Mickey Thompson's Vega in the first round, but lost to Pat Foster driving Barry Setzer's Vega in round two. He won the NHRA Winternationals by qualifying #6 with a 6.93/213 and beating Jerry Ruth's 6.96/209 in the first round, with a 6.90/218. In round two, he set Low ET with a 6.65/217.91 over Butch Maas' 6.84/216. Ed had an easy run in the semifinals when Jake Johnston fouled against him. In the final, he faced Dale Pulde in Mickey Thompson's Pinto. Pulde had problems and slowed to a 7.22 while McCulloch scored the victory with a 6.68/215.82. He drove his old car to a win at the Bakersfield March Meet. He was back in the Demon the following week (March 12) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed lasted until round two before he got out of shape and lost to Harrison. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 6.65 qualified #3 and in the opening round his 6.63/220.04 beat Lew Arrington's 6.74/213. That was followed by a 6.69 in round two over Joe Jacono's 6.87 and he got a solo in the semifinal when the Setzer Vega caught fire behind the line and was unable to run. He faced Larry Arnold in the final and McCulloch ran 6.54/224.43 to take the victory over Arnold's 6.68/218. The month of April started with a visit to Miami-Hollywood for its Big Go South race. It was an eight-car field and Ed qualified #1 with a 6.87/208. He beat Harry Hudson in round one, and he set a track record 6.71 in the semifinals while beating Paul Smith. He definitely had the edge in the final where he beat Ed O'Brien for the money. He then went to West Palm Beach for the AHRA Pro-Am Championships. Once again, he ended up in the final, but this time he lost to Bill Leavitt. He was runner-up again at OCIR's Big Four Championships in early May. It was a 32-car show and Ed started his run to the final by beating Bob Hawkins in the "Blue Blazer" Pinto. In round two, he beat another Pinto, the "Keeling and Clayton" car driven by Tom Ferraro. In round three, Mert Littlefield broke on the line against him. McCulloch then ran 6.98/197.36 to turn back Twig Zeigler and move into the final where he faced the killer car of Setzer. Pat Foster had driven it to a track record 6.52 in the semifinals so Ed was the underdog for their race. Sure enough, Foster shot to a 6.65/225 for the win as Ed smoked the tires and had to settle for the runner-up. On the final day of the Drag Racing Olympics race at Union Grove, Ed was running well. He beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the semifinals with a 6.52/216.86 and was set to race Don Prudhomme in the final when the "Snake" lost fire. McCulloch soloed for the win with a 6.50/217.91. He ran at the AHRA Springnationals in Denver, but failed to reach the finals. Things went much better at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #3 with a 6.78 and an opening round 6.73 beat Gary Henderson in the "Super Duster.” In round two his 6.79/206 beat Jake Johnston in Gene Snow's second car and a shut off 7.99 advanced in the semifinals when Foster fouled. This put Ed into the final with Leonard Hughes who qualified #2. In their race, Hughes got the jump and it looked like that was it for Ed, but the Cajun 'Cuda started to smoke the tires and McCulloch's 6.85/217.39 got the win light over Hughes' 7.08/196. 1972 NHRA Supernationals, OMS

Notes: Ed qualified #7 with a 6.517/218.97 at the NHRA Winternationals. A first-round 6.52/220.58 beat Sush Matsubara at 7.10/198, but a second-round 6.63/203.61 lost to Frank Hall's 6.39/217. He got a big win at Bakersfield on March 3 when final-round opponent Twig Zeigler broke. Still, Ed hustled to a 6.44/223.32 for the win. He had earlier set Top Speed at 226.70. Ed found himself in another final on March 17 at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Ed set Low ET in the semifinals with a 6.38 over Gene Snow. He fell off to a 6.91/186 in the final that lost to Tom McEwen's strong 6.41/212. He was runner-up again on April 6 at the OCIR AHRA Grand American. Ed ran 6.62/221.67 over Danny Ongais' 6.68/220, 6.70/221.67 over Don Prudhomme, and a 6.59/223.88 solo when Bob Pickett broke on the line in the semifinal. In the final, he lost to Jim Dunn's 6.66/220. He then stopped at Irwindale for the big 30 car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. In the opening round, he beat Gerry Glenn with a 6.64/203.61 but had problems in round two and shut off to 7.47 in a loss to Dunn's 6.37. McCulloch always ran well at Seattle, and in May, it was no exception for the fifth annual Northwest Open. He qualified #5 in the eight-car show, meaning he had to run low qualifier Prudhomme in the first round. Ed won, running a 6.47/213.27, while Don crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the semifinal, he set Low ET with a 6.37/225 over Ken Goodell's 6.43/218. Somehow Prudhomme had gotten reinstated and had made it to the final to face Ed again. This time, McCulloch got out of shape (15.27) and settled for runner-up again. At the AHRA Springnationals held at Spokane, McCulloch qualified #6 and beat Mike Miller in the first round, before losing to Danny Ongais in round two. In June, a 6.453/227.27 (Top Speed) qualified #4 at the NHRA Springnationals, but a sleepy first-round 6.847/214.79 lost to Paul Smith's 7.00/214. The Rockford Manufacturer's Meet at Byron Dragway was Ed's next stop. All cars were to run three races, and Ed won his first with a 6.63/218.97. In his second race, his 6.64/217.91 lost to Richard Tharp's 6.44/223 in Don Schumacher's car, and in his final race, he lost a motor, giving Cliff Brown an easy win. In July, he finished runner-up to Gene Snow at the AHRA Drag Nationals at Kansas City when he fouled away a 6.51 in the final. Ed qualified #5 in the field with a 6.60/211.76 and beat low qualifier Shirl Greer in the second round with a 6.53/222.77 over Shirl's quicker 6.50. In the semifinals, a 6.57 dropped Dale Creasy. Another runner-up finish came the following week (July 13) at Capitol Raceway's King of Kings Funny Car race. Ed was not running up to par as he beat Russell Long with a 7.01/171.39 and an 8.17/135 beat Beadle's tire-smoker in the semifinals. In the final, he did pick up to 6.94/226.19, but it was still second best to Al Segrini's 6.65/210. The next day he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.375/229.00 qualified #3. In the first round, the car went into a wheelstand and lost to eventual winner Segrini at 6.60/197. On July 25, he was at Maple Grove for their All-American Series race. In the opening round, he beat Tom Prock's 6.63/204 with a 6.45/205.94. Ed set Low ET in the second round with a 6.40/222.22 over Jim Liberman. In the semifinals, he broke a brake caliper and could not stage against Kosty Ivanof. The Super Stock Magazine Nationals was held at York US 30 near the end of July, and it featured two Funny Car fields. One was called the Independents, and the other was the NHRA class cars. Ed raced in the NHRA class as both were eight-car shows. He opened with a 6.93/221.67 to beat Jimmy Boyd, while a semifinal 7.31 advanced when Bill Leavitt fouled. He ran the "Frantic Ford" driven by Dodger Glenn in the final, and his 6.69/209.30 took the victory over Glenn's troubled 7.53/154. Back to Seattle in August, he set Low ET at a track record 6.27 and had Top Speed at 231, and won the Seafair 64-car show over Jerry Ruth. He was favored to win at the Irwindale Grand Prix race. There he set Low ET with a 6.38 at 219.51 in beating Dave Condit, but in the semifinals, he was surprised by Mike Halloran, whose 6.50/220 outran his 6.59/206.89. The next stop was at Tulsa for the AHRA American Challenge race. McCulloch qualified #3 and lasted until the semifinals, where he went up in smoke against Prudhomme. Then came the "big one," the NHRA US Nationals at Indy. Ed's 6.375/227.27 qualified #5, and an even better 6.319/210.77 beat Dunn's 7.09/138 in the first round. But in round two, he got out of shape and shut off against Billy Meyer, who was long gone, setting Low ET with a 6.19/218. He then got another runner-up finish at the AHRA Grandnationals, where Prudhomme beat him in the final. Ed qualified #5 at the Ontario World Finals with a 6.365/226.13. He beat Gordie Bonin in round one, 6.428/216.34 to 6.55/226, and beat Mike Miller in round two, 6.315/220.58 to 6.86/200. Ed kept rolling in the semis, taking out Jim Dunn, 6.384/209.79 to 7.04/144. However, in the final, Dave Condit got the win in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang, 6.24/212, to Ed's consistent 6.338/225.56. ET & mph from Seattle Seafair Funny Car Championships in August per National Dragster, 8/23/74.

Notes: Ed McCulloch was especially strong in '75. He had really shown his hand in '72 as the dominant FC of the season, but the '73 and '74 seasons were nowhere near as good. He started the '75 season at the Fremont New Year's Day Funny Car meet. He and Raymond Beadle had a tire-smoking battle in the first round, with Ed's 7.21 advancing over the "Blue Max's" 7.44. Unfortunately for McCulloch, he broke on the line against Jim Dunn in the second round. McCulloch was at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, and although he qualified, he blew the engine and was unable to run in eliminations. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #13 with a 6.44, but in the first round, his 6.72/197.36 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.61/206. The next stop came at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. It was a twelve-car field, and McCulloch's 6.31/210.77 qualified #3. He got some payback over McEwen in the opening round, where his 6.40/219.51 beat the "Goose's" 6.86/164, but in the second round, the car broke on the line against John Lombardo. He skipped the NHRA Gatornationals but then came back stronger than ever. At Irwindale's big Coca-Cola 32-car show, Ed was running well. A 6.62 in the first round advanced easily, and in round two, his 6.47/223.88 beat Clarence Bailey. He improved in round three, where his 6.33/217.91 beat Gary Southern driving the "Voodoo" Pinto. But due to it getting late, track management decided that whoever ran the best ET in winning their semifinal race was declared the winner. The trouble was, as well as Ed had been running, one car had been running a bit stronger - the Monza of Don Prudhomme. So, while Ed won his semifinal race with a 6.44/225.00 (Top Speed), Prudhomme was declared the winner with his track-record 6.25, beating Gary Burgin. Things got better fast; McCulloch then went to Seattle for its opening show of '75 and won. Not only did he win, but he also reset the track record twice, first with a 6.27 (at 218.97) and then again in the final with a 6.24/226.13 (Top Speed) in the final over Mike Miller in the "Green Elephant." He then made a stop at Portland, where he won again. Ed had held the track record at 6.37 before the race, but once again, he reset it a couple of times. Not many cars could run three 6.2s in a row at this time, but Ed did it here. A first-round 6.25 (at 218.97) beat Ken McLean, and in round two, he really wowed them with a 6.22 at 217.91 to beat Jerry Ruth. For the second straight race, he faced Miller in the final, and the results were the same: Ed's 6.27/218.97 beat Miller who smoked the tires. Another win came at the Ignitor Funny Car Championships at Firebird Raceway. There he set low et at 6.77 and beat McEwen and Prudhomme on his way to a final round showdown with Ruth. It was a close final with both running 6.82 (Ed at 211.68), but Ed got the win light. On April 27, he scored yet another big victory, winning the Oregon National Open at Portland. He had Low ET at 6.28 in qualifying #1, and he stopped Prudhomme in the final. The month of May started with McCulloch in the victory circle at Fremont's Northern Nationals. There he stopped Jake Johnston and Neil Leffler (on a holeshot) before beating Dunn in the final with a 6.27/224.43. He was back in Seattle on May 31 for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. A 6.52/211.76 qualified #2 in the eight-car field behind Prudhomme. An opening round 6.76/191 stopped Nick Harmon, while a strong 6.39/205.01 beat Gordie Bonin's 6.61/226 in the semifinals. The 6.39 came at a price as he broke the rear end and could not race Prudhomme in the final. He had more problems at Portland for the Rose Festival Drags, where he again broke in the final against Kenny Goodell. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, Prudhomme out qualified him (6.29), but Ed's 6.41/223.88 got the #2 spot. In the first round, McEwen smoked the tires against him, and Ed's 6.45 moved on. In round two, he ran another 6.45 at 205.47 to beat Burgin's 6.58/221. His ride ended in the semifinals, where Beadle's 6.44/223 beat his 6.51/202. The following week, he was at Byron for its Manufacturer's Meet. All twelve cars made two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Gene Snow returned to driving for the first time since his back surgery and made his return a winning one by stopping McCulloch's 6.95/181.81 in the first round with a 6.84/214. Ed won his second race with a 6.90/183.67 over Pat Foster driving the "Chicago Patrol," but his ETs failed to get him into the final. It was then on to Connecticut, where Ed set Low ET at 6.42 before breaking in the final against Bill Leavitt. He was in another final round, this time at Maple Grove's Fourth of July race. Unfortunately, he overpowered the track and smoked the tires against Jim Liberman. | Ed turned a 6.25/225.00 at OCIR Manufacturers' Funny Car Championship on 11/1/75. - RT

Notes: Ed was at Fremont for its Nitro Bowl early in January. All cars there were to run three rounds with the winner based on the number of wins in the competition. Ed won his first race with a 6.60/218.44 (Top Speed) over Dale Pulde's 6.87/155 in the "Chicago Patrol.” In round two, his 6.62 beat Jake Johnston, who got out of shape and shut off in the "Pisano-Matsubara" car. But in his final run, he ran his best ET, and it wasn't good enough. His 6.52 lost to Tom McEwen's 6.51, and McEwen's win gave him the title as he won all three of his races. Ed then went to OCIR for its season opener, where once again he set Top Speed, this time at 217.91, but lost to Johnston in round two. He did not go to Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals, nor was he at Beeline for the NHRA Winter Classic, but he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.24/225.56 and an opening-round 6.37/210.28 beat John Lombardo. A second-round 6.32/220.58 beat a tire-shaking Tripp Shumake, and in the semifinals, he broke a throttle linkage and slowed to 9.75 but lucked out as opponent Gene Snow fouled. He then faced Don Prudhomme in the final, and despite running a good 6.36/223.88, he still finished runner-up to the "Snake's" 6.26/227. He then went to OCIR for its East vs. West Meet, and while he didn't win, he set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.20/232.55. Early in March, Irwindale held its Night Opener. Eight cars made two rounds of racing, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Ed was nowhere near running quick enough to reach the final. In his first race, both he and Lombardo smoked the tires with the "Ace's" 7.40 coming out on top. He again smoked the hides in his second race, finally backing out of it to 13.15, while eventual winner McEwen won with a 6.67. McCulloch ran at the Bakersfield March Meet, but he got out of shape in the first round, and lost to Jim Dunn. It was surprising that he failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He competed at the OCIR "Fox Hunt" race on March 20.27 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. His 6.50 got him the #6 spot. An opening round 6.61/200.44 beat Mike Halloran who broke. In the second round, his 6.43/211.76 lost to the eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.32/182. A week later, McCulloch was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 Opener. He qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show with a 6.50/227.84. In the first round, he got a solo as Steve Leach had crashed in qualifying. Ed advanced with a 6.63/196.93. But in round two, he had problems against "Jungle Jim" Liberman, and his shut off 12.41 lost to Jim's strong 6.19. On the Fourth of July weekend Ed was entered in the AHRA Nationals at Green Valley. Ed beat a broken Larry Gould while breaking himself on the run. Ed’s best NHRA national event times were 6.161/237.46 at Indy. Did Ed run 6.15 somewhere this year? | Indy runs were in the new Foster/Hume car debuted that August. In the pictured '75-'76 car, he also won the SIR Funny Car opener in early April with a 6.46 over Mike Miller's Boredom Zero Mustang II. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ed McCulloch debuted his new Arrow at the NHRA Fallnationals in September. He qualified #6 at 6.331/226.13. In round one, he fell off the pace and lost to Jim Adolph, 6.58/191.89 to 7.24/155.17. On October 1 at Irwindale's Grand Finale. This was Irwindale's final race, and it featured a sixteen-car field. Ed ran 6.55/211 in the opening round to beat Gary Densham's 6.59/205, but he shut off in round two against the eventual winner, John Lombardo. He qualified #xx at the Ontario World Finals at 6.25/229.59 but again lost in the first round, this time to Tom McEwen, 6.174/230.76 to 6.422/211.26. Notes: McCulloch was at OCIR early in the year for its Funny Car opener. He ran well, reaching the final against Raymond Beadle, driving the "Blue Max." Despite running a good 6.30/228.42, the "Max" stepped up to 6.01/234 to claim the victory. Ed did not go to Tucson to race at the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified on the "bump" at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.435/230.76. He lost in round one to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian," 6.206/226.13 to 7.118-153.06. Ed was back at OCIR for a sixteen-car show in March. While he didn't reach the final, he did run a strong 6.24. Ed's next NHRA national event was not until the NHRA Springnationals in Columbus in June. He ran 6.410 to claim the third alternate position. At Englishtown, Ed qualified #13 at 6.350/227.27. He got a measure of revenge on Ron Colson with a first-round win, 6.75/229.00 to 6.82/229.00. Ed shut off against Don Prudhomme in round two, sending the Snake on a 6.26/227.27 single. Ed debuted a new Plymouth Arrow at the Fallnationals in Seattle. Notes: McCulloch started his season at OCIR's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event. Unfortunately, the season started with a first-round loss to the race's eventual winner John Lombardo. Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #11 with a 6.371/227.84. In the opening round, an off-pace 7.33/185 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.30/236. At Gainesville, for the NHRA Gatornationals, Ed's 6.64/221 qualified #15. In the first round, a shutoff 13.40-58.52 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.40/232. At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.27/232.55 in the opening round defeated Gordie Bonin's 6.29/229. A second-round 6.09/231.95 beat Prudhomme's 6.07/234. His 6.26 in the semifinal lost to eventual winner Denny Savage's 6.22. Early in April, he was at Portland for its opener. It was an eight-car show, and McCulloch had tire shake in the first round, and shut off against Mike Miller. It was not his day as in his second race, his 6.89/205 lost to Hank Johnson's 6.63/174. The following day, he was at Seattle for its opener. Ed's 6.57/220 beat Nick Harmon in round one, but tire shake stopped him again in the semifinal. He was forced to shut down to a 10.60-72 loss against Tommy Ivo, who advanced to the final with a 6.61/224. His next stop was at OCIR for the big 64-car show. It was rain-delayed by one week, but Ed set Low ET in round two while beating Billy Meyer with a 6.26. He reached the final only to lose to Pat Foster. On May 6, Seattle hosted the NHRA Division 6 opener. Ed's 6.25/231.95 in qualifying was second only to Bonin's 6.19/234. But Ed had problems in the opening round and shut down to a 10.26 that lost to Miller's 6.63. His next stop was at Portland for the Oregon Open. In the first round, McCulloch's 6.56/197 beat Miller's 6.97/141. But the Arrow continued to have problems getting down the track in the semifinal. Ed's tire-smoking 10.10 lost to Prudhomme's 6.16. He really improved his qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There, a 6.18/214.79 qualified #4. But he was still having a tough time getting past the first-round at the major NHRA events. This time he shut down to an 8.98/96.77 loss to Bob Pickett, who advanced with a 6.27/220. Ran 6.09 at Bakersfield 3/78, defeated a quicker 6.07 by Don Prudhomme. Ed ran best NHRA times of 6.090/237.46 on race day at NHRA Englishtown 7/17/78. Formerly listed 6.03/238.09 for 1978. If Ed ran those numbers, where did it occur? | Mean car, with the Bowers Blower/Okie Bernd combo. Shown in a Summer '78 Midwest match race article in SS&Dl, titled "The Rites Of Spring." Notes: Photo from Orange County. Ran 6.091/237.46 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80. | At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at OCIR, McCulloch made his debut driving the "Super Shops" car. It was quite spectacular when the car caught fire on his first pass ever and was seriously damaged. He was OK. Ed qualified #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.14/243.90. In the first round, he got out of shape and slowed to an 8.13 that lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.16. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #11, but again got crossed up in the first round, and his 6.83/153.06 lost to Paul Smith's 6.11/229 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." In April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 Opener. Ed qualified #5 in the eight-car show with a 6.18/230.76. He advanced past the first-round with a 6.38/209.30 when alternate Dave Condit (filling in for Don Prudhomme) broke. His 6.21/226.70 beat Mike Dunn in Bill Schifsky's Mustang II in the semifinals. In the final, McCulloch ran Sherm Gunn. Gunn had problems and slowed to a 9.95/84 while Ed got the victory with a 6.12/236.84. On May 4, Ed was in Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 points race. He qualified #1 with a 6.14/236.84, but he lost in a dual tire smoker in the first round. Hank Johnson won with a 6.74 over Ed's slightly quicker 6.72. At the third Division 6 race at OCIR, Ed qualified #2 with a 6.13/225 behind Don Prudhomme's 6.03. McCulloch's 6.35/234.37 beat a tire-smoking Jim Dunn in the first round. In the semifinals, he smoked the tires and lost to Tom McEwen. In June, the "Super Shops" team was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.25/223.32 qualified #14 in the field. He beat Tripp Shumake in round one, and a 6.26/226.70 beat Dale Pulde in round two. But in the semifinals, he had a header come loose, and he shut off, giving Tom Hoover an easy ride into the final. The team failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. At the NHRA Summernationals, Ed lasted until the second round, where he lost to Billy Meyer. At the NHRA Division 5 race at Bonneville Raceway, McCulloch lost in the semifinals to Rob Williams. His 6.68/208 lost to Rob's 6.44/200. We formerly listed 6.04 for this car this year. Removing until we get validation. That did not occur on the NHRA national event trail, where Ed ran the 6.091 at Indy and plenty of 6.1s. His 243.90 from the Winters was his fastest speed of the year. Ed won NHRA Indy in this car. The OCIR fire happened late in '79, not sure if it was at the MM. In January '80 ND reported a 6.08 at the Fremont Opener, where Beadle ran 5.92/244. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 5.698 at NHRA Maple Grove 9/85. | Ed ran 5.79/250 to qualify #5 at Pomona for the Winternationals. A first-round 5.94 beat Paul Smith and in round two, a 5.73/252 beat John Lombardo's 5.76/253 in the "Blue Max." He fouled against Dale Pulde in the semifinals. He did better at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A second round 5.91/254 beat Billy Meyer and in the semifinals, a shut off-25.41/31 advanced when Pulde crossed the centerline and was disqualified. In the final he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car and won with a 5.93/253.52. McCulloch qualified #2 at Gainesville for the Gatornationals with a 5.70/250.83. A first-round 5.75/250.69 beat Oswald, but while running Pulde in the second round, he lost a blower and the race. The same thing happened at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro Am Championships. There Ed qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) at 254, but against Scott Kalitta in the first round, he lost another blower. The next stop on the NHRA trail was Atlanta for the Southern Nationals on April 21. Once again Ed qualified well with his 5.79/254.38 taking the #2 spot. Oswald got crossed up in the first round, against him and McCulloch's 5.82/255.68 advanced. In round two, a 5.87 beat John Collins and in the semifinals, Lombardo lost a rod just off the line, advancing Ed into the final. In the final he met Kenny Bernstein and despite running a good 5.81/247.25 he lost to Bernstein's better 5.69/252. At Baton Rouge for NHRA's fourth national event, the Cajun Nationals, Ed slipped to a 5.90/244.16 to qualify way back in the #10 spot. He lost to Bernstein in the first round. He qualified #9 at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, but lost to John Collins in the first round. The team got back into the groove in June, qualifying #3 at the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.77/253.52. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but a 5.88/233.57 lost to Don Prudhomme's 5.79/251 in round two. At the NHRA Grandnationals, a 5.75/254.66 qualified #5. He failed to reach the finals.

Notes: Ed qualified #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.73/253.52. In the first round, his 5.82/240.64 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.69/250. Luck was on the "Ace's side at the NHRA Gatornationals. He didn't qualify very well, with a 5.98/233.16 (#14). He went on to win the race by beating Brad Tuttle in the first round, where they both ran 5.74 (Ed at 257.58). In round two, his troubled 6.67/197.36 advanced when Mark Oswald boiled the hides in the "Candies and Hughes" car. His tire-smoking, off-pace 6.22/234 beat Scott Kalitta in the semifinals, putting him in the final against another long-time veteran, Tom McEwen. The "Mongoose" had to be considered the favorite based on his 5.67 in the semifinals. Unfortunately, McEwen broke, and the race never came off, so Ed singled for the title with an 11.25/69.63. Due to the Gatornationals being rain-delayed from March 16 to 23, Ed could not run at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as they were booked on the same day. He did make IHRA's second race, the Bayou Nationals, on April 13. He made it into the final before losing to Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. A week later, he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.86/256.41. He won, but once again, good old racing luck played a part. He beat McEwen in the first round, and in round two, his 6.02/242 got around Billy Meyer's 6.12/244 in a tire-smoking contest. In the semifinals, he advanced with a 5.95/252.10 when the "Blue Max," with John Lombardo on board, broke a transmission. In the final, the "Ace" lined up with Jim Head. Jim had been having his share of problems, running 6.22 and 8.38 in the previous two rounds. The two left together in the final, and Ed got the victory with a 6.00/247.52 over Head's right there 6.00/250. It was a short field at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun National in June. The sixteenth qualifier ran 11.84 and still made the show! McCulloch qualified #14 with a 6.54/168.28. He slowed to a 6.65/162.68 in the first round, which lost to Kalitta's 5.80/252. Crewchief Bernie Fedderly was still having trouble dialing in the car at the NHRA Springnationals on June 15. A best of 6.00/231.12 qualified #12, but Ed lost to McEwen in the first round. A week later (June 22), the team was at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. Once again, McEwen beat him, but this time it was in the semifinals. Only twelve cars showed for the eliminator at the NHRA Grandnationals, so qualifying was easy. Ed qualified #9 with a 5.92/249.03. His first-round 5.94/250.69 lost to Johnny West's 5.78/234 in the "Hawaiian." July opened with the team at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. A 5.91/247.93 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. Ed got a measure of satisfaction in the first round, when his 6.01/245.90 beat a tire-smoking McEwen. But in the semifinals, he lost to Oswald. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Fedderly tuned the car to a 5.88/244.69 in qualifying (#13). But in round one, the "Mongoose" McEwen stopped him. Ed qualified really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 5.87/234.19 got the #4 spot in the thin air. Unfortunately, he again lost in the first round, this time to Steve Hodkinson. By this time, the team needed something good to happen. And it did. They rolled into Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals in the middle of August. Ed qualified so-so with a 5.88/249.30 for the #8 spot in the show. He beat Della Woods in the first round, with a 5.96/241.93. A 5.86/254 beat West in round two, and his 5.98/252 beat a tire-smoking Oswald in the semifinals. That put him in the final with his nemesis McEwen. Ed had problems and shut off to a 22.44/30.82 while Tom motored to the victory with a 5.81/254. Still, it was a good showing for the "Miller American" team. There was one more stop before Indy, which was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. Ed qualified #6 in the eight-car show and beat Head in round one, before losing to eventual winner Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals. Then it was on to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Ed always ran well at Indy, but not so much in '86. He qualified on the "bump" with a 5.88/245.73. In the first round, he survived a tire-smoking battle with Craig Epperly that saw Ed's 6.41/243 beat Craig's quicker 6.34/220. In the second round, McCulloch ran 5.92/226.52, but it wasn't enough, as he lost to Oswald's 5.64/260. The following week (September 7), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #4, but he lost in round one. The team then went to Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. Ed's 5.80/251.04 qualified #6. Another 5.80 at 246.30 beat Jerry Caminito's 5.91/235 in the opening round. In round two, eventual winner Oswald ran 5.65/262 to beat McCulloch's 5.85/235.17.

Notes: Photo from Indy 1987. Also 5.49 at Ennis All Stars race in April. Battle for Funny Car ET record at Ennis 87 was amazing: John Force (5.453), Mark Oswald (5.449), Mike Dunn (5.443), and Force (5.396) all reset the mark, but Ed McCulloch finally landed the mark with the 5.366 (with a best speed of 271.73). Later went 272.06 at Pomona Finals 87. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January He qualified #7 in the eight-car field with a 6.00/240.00. A 5.95/238.72 beat Tom Hoover's 5.97/238 in the first round, but he lost a clutch in the semifinals and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 5.59/266.11 to qualify #5. He picked up to 5.53/266.90 in the first round, to beat Tom McEwen's 5.68/247. In the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 11.28/74.75 loss to Bernstein. He then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where he lasted until the semifinals before losing to McEwen. The following week (March 22) found the team at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Ed qualified #2 with a 5.57/266.58 behind Bernstein's track record 5.47. Billy Meyer broke against him in the first round, and McCulloch advanced with a 5.62/256.84. In round two, his 5.58/265.09 took out John Force's 5.69/257. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Johnny West's 5.76/252 in the "Hawaiian." Then came the NHRA Winston All Star race on April 5th at the Texas Motorplex. Ed qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.49/273.05, but he broke in the first round, against Meyer. Only sixteen FC's showed for the sixteen available spots at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals so qualifying was easy. Still, Ed laid down a 5.68/262.85 to qualify #3. A 6.01/252.45 advanced in round one, when Doc Halladay lost a blower belt and in round two he beat a tire-smoking Hoover with a 5.66/260.94. But he lost to eventual winner Bernstein in the semifinals. Ed did not race at the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, choosing to go to Famoso for the Bakersfield meet that was running on the same weekend in early May. He ran 5.68/260.11 to qualify #2 behind Force's 5.66. These two would work their way into the final. McCulloch's first-round 5.85/256.41 beat Don Prudhomme who overpowered the track and smoked his tires. A 5.79/259.36 beat Jim Murphy in the semifinals. Force and McCulloch had a good race in the final, but Force's 5.72/260 got the victory over Ed's 5.79/236.84. The next stop on the NHRA tour was at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. A 5.88/252.38 qualified #5. He beat Eric Reed in round one, with a 5.87/257.50, but the car broke in round two giving Bernstein a free trip into the semifinals. Because of the Cajun Nationals being postponed one week due to rain, it was run on the same weekend as the IHRA Springnationals and subsequently, Ed did not run at Bristol. He did run a week later (June 7) at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. He set Low ET in the first round, with a 5.51 at 263.92 while beating Hoover and a semifinal 5.58/257.14 solo advanced to the final when Steve Hodkinson failed to show. In the final, he faced Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" T-Bird. Mark got the victory with a 5.60/265 while Ed continued to wait for his first victory of '87. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #3 with a 5.74/252.52. He beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" before sleeping on the line in round two where his 5.81/253.95 lost to Meyer's 5.86/250. NHRA's Grandnationals in Canada had only fifteen cars show for the sixteen-car field, but McCulloch still ran hard registering a 5.72/258.32 to qualify #2 behind Force at 5.68. Ed's 5.76/250.69 in the first round, beat West's 5.83/257. A second round 5.88/247.38 took care of Jim Head and in the semifinals, his 5.74/248.07 got the best of Oswald. Once again, he was in a final, and he faced Force again. The results were the same as they had been at the Bakersfield race, John won with a 5.65/257 while Ed shut off with problems. He suffered a first-round loss to Darrell Amberson at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals and at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, he lost to McEwen in the first round. That after qualifying #7 with a 5.67/256.77. The team was long overdue for a win. It didn't happen at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 5.87/243.96 qualified #7, and he beat Craig Epperly and West with times of 5.96/235.47 and 6.14/229.00 to reach the semifinals. Crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in too much power and Ed smoked the tires and lost to Force's 5.88/245. On August second, Seattle held an Funny Car show with ten Funny Car's running two rounds with the two lowest ET's running in the final. Ed ran 5.75/258.88 over Gary Densham and 5.78/253.52 over Beadle's quicker 5.76/249. His first-round 5.75 made the final where he ran Force who made the final with a 5.63. Once again, John gave Ed another runner-up finish with his 5.67/256 beating the "Miller" car's 5.72/254.95. At the NHRA Northstar Nationals, Ed qualified #6 with a 5.64/257.73. He shut off to a 9.26/90.66 win in the first round, when McEwen broke, but in the second round, he smoked the tires and shut off to a 17.94/44.25 loss to Bernstein's 5.57/265. Finally, a win! On August 30, he won the IHRA World Nationals at Norwalk. He qualified #2 behind Oswald and then beat Scott Kalitta and Halladay before stopping Oswald in the final. For a team running this well it was a long wait for its first win of the season. Then it was off to Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. The Big Bud Shootout was run in conjunction with this race and Ed qualified third for the eight-car field based on qualifying results for the past year. He lasted unit round two where he broke an oil line and shut off against Oswald. The following day for the Nationals, Ed qualified #5 with a 5.61/268.01. A first-round 5.79/259 beat Tim Grose's 5.97/241. In round two the car broke a crank and went into a fireball in a loss to Bernstein. Ed got the car stopped and he was OK. RH

Notes: First Funny Car in the 5.20s with a 5.255 at Ennis IHRA 1988, followed by a quicker 5.230. Photo from Columbus 1988. Best NHRA times of 5.252 at Houston Fall 1988 and 277.26 at Maple Grove 9/88. | Ed started the season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing that featured an eight-car Funny Car show. McCulloch qualified #2 with a 5.56/261.62 behind John Force's 5.34. These two would end up meeting in the final. The "Ace" got there by first beating Ron Fassl with a 5.60/260.86 and in the semifinals, a 5.73/255.68 got around a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. John was running two tenths quicker with 5.40 and 5.41 times. In the final, it was a foregone conclusion. John beat Ed's 5.73/204.08 with a 5.47/267 to take the title. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 5.39 (Low ET) got the pole, but in the first round, the "Ace" smoked the tires and lost to Bruce Larson. His next stop was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. There, a first-round 5.69/256.41 beat a tire smoking Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car, but in the semifinals against Tripp Shumake, the Cutlass broke on the line. A week later (March 20) he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. It was a weekend he would rather forget as he failed to qualify and was only third alternate for the show. How things change in a week, as on March 27 he was low qualifier with a 5.54/258.62 at Bradenton for the IHRA Supernationals. Unfortunately, a first-round 5.75 lost to Scott Kalitta's holeshot 5.77.
