Notes: Ed also ran 5.188 that same day. The 5.132 was not bettered until March 1992. This photo from Columbus 1988. Confirmed 277.17 at Memphis 89. We need to confirm the Ennis 280.89. | Ed started the '89 season by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.36/276.58. He lost to Mark Oswald in the first round. At the next event, the NHRA Supernationals at Houston, he ran a 5.34/272.89 to qualify #7. Once again Ed got taken out by Oswald, but this time it was in round two where Mark's 5.38 nipped McCulloch's 5.40. He had some luck on his side at the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.39/268.89 qualified #5, but that was the best he ran at Gainesville. He beat a tire smoking Scott Kalitta in the first round, and a second round 6.47 beat a tire smoking R.C. Sherman. In the semifinal, a 9.76/68 mph run advanced when Art Hendey broke on the line. In the final, Ed took the victory with a 19.70-70.94 beat Bruce Larson fouled. On April 23 he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. A 5.45/270.75 qualified #3, but he lost to Sherman in the first round. From there it was off to Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals where he ran a 5.41/274.97 to qualify #7. He beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a 5.55 took out Tony McCallum's 5.60 in round two. But in the semifinal, he shut off to a 10.00 loss to Kenny Bernstein. He made it into the semifinals of the next event as well, the NHRA Cajun Nationals. There he qualified #6 with a 5.55/268.73. He got revenge on Oswald in round two, beating him with a 5.46/269 to Mark's 5.57. But in the semifinal, John Martin beat Ed. He went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, and while he didn't make the final, he did set Low ET at 5.45. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified #6 with a 5.36/269.70, but he lost to Johnny West in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. He qualified #4 with a 5.52/265.17, but a first-round 6.34/163 lost to Hendey's 5.63/260. McCulloch made the final at the NHRA Summernationals in July. A 5.30 qualified #2. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and a 5.56/268 beat Larson's quicker 5.50 in round two. In the semifinals, a 5.64/262 beat a tire smoking Don Gay Jr. In the final he ran Bernstein. A 5.50 by McCulloch came in second best to Kenny's 5.41. In the thin air of Denver, for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Ed ran 5.65/252.24 to qualify #4. He beat Don Prudhomme in the first round, and a 5.72/250 beat Tom Hoover in round two, but a semifinal 5.91 fell to Larson's 5.54. The eleventh race on the NHRA schedule was the California Nationals. A 5.38/275.31 qualified Ed #2. He made it into the semifinal before losing to Oswald's 5.49/267 with a quicker 5.47/270.92. The NHRA Seafair Nationals was the next race. Ed qualified #7 with a 5.35/274.39, but a first-round 5.98/222.82 lost to Jim Murphy. Ed hadn't won a race since March and the team was overdue. Things finally came together on August 20 at the NHRA Northstar Nationals. McCulloch got his first pole of the year with a 5.42/267.53. He set a 5.37 track record at 270.27 in the first round, and a second round 5.45/270.02 beat Sherman's 5.51/263. In the semifinal, a 5.42/268.25 beat upstart Larry Camenzind, and for the win he faced off with Larson. It was Ed's driving that got the victory, as he pulled a holeshot and his 5.55/266.90 beat Bruce's quicker 5.51/264. After that, it was on to Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 5.35/275.90 qualified #6 and in round one, a 5.56/271.49 beat Jerry Caminito's 6.11/171. In round two, his 5.46/269.94 lost to Larson's 5.32/274. On September 17, Ed was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. He qualified #4 with a 5.28/274.39 and a 5.40/222 beat R.C. Sherman in the first round. But in round two, he was late off the line and his 5.30/271.57 finished behind Force's 5.34/275. |

Notes: Photo from Columbus 1988 (same paint). NHRA mandated a new 3.20 rear end gear rule in the fuel classes. One team that was happy about the rule was this one. Ed McCulloch and Bernie Fedderly had been running the 3.20 gear since late in the '89 season. They were at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January, where Ed came off the truck and reset the track record with a 5.29 at 242.45. The next day, he returned to run 5.26/265.95 before smoking the tires to a 12.27/96.54 on a follow-up run. At Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, McCulloch's 5.29/266.42 qualified #2 behind John Force's 5.28/275. In the opening round of eliminations, he improved to 5.27 (Low ET and a track record) at 262.39 to beat Jim White's 5.50/258 in the "Hawaiian." In round two, Glenn Mikres' 5.63/257 lost to Ed's 5.38/258.99. Things continued to go his way in the semifinals, where a tire-hazing 5.89/235.78 beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires hard. In the final, he faced newcomer K.C. Spurlock, the last qualifier in the field who had beaten Force in the opening round. But Fedderly dialed in too much power, and Ed smoked the tires helplessly to a 21.37/31.07 while K.C. ran 5.78/186 for his first victory. The team's next stop was back at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals. They didn't run nearly as well there as the month before; a 5.40/264.62 qualified #9. In the first round, he and Mark Oswald, who was driving for "Candies and Hughes," had a great race that saw both drivers run 5.37 (Ed at 265.48), but Oswald got to the stripe first. Qualifying did not go very well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. McCulloch only qualified #14 with a 5.63/260.64. Fedderly stepped the car up in the first round, with a 5.31/274.13, taking out White's 5.73/188. A consistent 5.32/270.67 beat R.C. Sherman's 5.41/271 in the second round, but Ed smoked the tires against Bruce Larson in the semifinal. The next event on the NHRA calendar was the Gatornationals at Gainesville. McCulloch qualified #5 at 5.41/261.93. He almost lost in the first round, when he and his opponent, Johnny West, smoked the tires. Ed recovered first and won with a 6.69/245.63. Lane choice was not his for round two. He didn't need it as a 5.35/265.95 was enough to knock Oswald out of the show. Larson got out of shape and shut off in the semifinal, so Ed advanced with a 5.44/265.09. The final was a rematch of Pomona, with Spurlock not being as much of an underdog now. He even carried lane choice with him. But this time, Ed reversed the finish with his 5.33/267.37 getting the victory over K.C.'s 5.40/273. The next stop was Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car field and a 5.34/265.33 qualified #4. He improved to a great 5.28/271.16 to beat Spurlock's close 5.29/275 in round one, but a wheelstanding 7.46/110.63 lost to eventual winner Force's 5.44/265 in the semifinal. It didn't take Ed long to get back in the winner's circle as he won the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His 5.26/272.47 qualified #3. He then ran 5.35/267.30 to beat Oswald's 5.48/268. A second-round 5.44/258.84 beat Richard Hartman's 5.56/242. Larson smoked the tires against him in the semifinal and a 5.34/263.85 advanced. He went up against Paul Smith, who was driving Chuck Etchells Beretta in the final. Surprisingly enough, of the two, Smith had run the best number of eliminations, a 5.29 in round one. His semifinal 5.35 was nothing to sneeze at either. But he smoked the tires in the final, and Ed got his second win of the year with a 5.31/258.91. |

Notes: Ed was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where his 5.48/272.14 qualified #7. He beat Mark Oswald in the first round, with a 5.50/274.55 and a second-round 5.45/273.63 beat Jim White's 5.50/272 in the "Hawaiian." But in the semifinals, his 5.41/273.22 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.31/272. He qualified #3 with a 5.33/274.64 at the NHRA Arizona Nationals, and an opening-round 5.27/282.57 stopped Jim Murphy. But he smoked the tires in round two and lost to Del Worsham. He ran really well at Houston for the NHRA Supernationals. A 5.28/282.39 qualified #3, and he beat Gary Densham in round one. In round two, Mike Dunn's 5.46/251 lost to Ed's 5.30/278.29. He fell off to 5.40/276.32 in the semifinals, but it was still enough to beat Oswald. He faced Force in the final for the money. Unfortunately, McCulloch smoked the tires and shut off to 6.11/159.37 while John picked up the win with a 5.21/278. Ed continued to qualify well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, a 5.29/272.06 got the #3 spot. He beat Gary Bolger in round one, with a 5.40/270.43, but he lost to Tom Hoover in the second round. Atlanta was the next stop on the NHRA tour for the Southern Nationals. Once again, Ed qualified #3, this time with a 5.31/276.24. He beat Freddie Neely in round one before smoking the tires and losing to White in round two. At Memphis, for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals, Ed slipped to #4 in qualifying with a 5.32/276.07. In the first round, Paula Martin lost an engine against him, and Ed advanced with a 5.54/256.70. A second round 5.52/267.77 beat Al Hofmann. But 5.5s were not going to get the job done, and, in the semifinal, Ed's 5.56/273.05 lost to Hoover's 5.48. The seventh race of the season was the NHRA Springnationals at Columbus. McCulloch returned to his #3 qualifying spot with a 5.34/272.06. He beat Murphy in round one, with a 5.48/271.73, but a round two 5.41/259.44 lost to Force's 5.35/267. He followed the tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where he "only" qualified #7 with a 5.48/265.01. In the opening round, he beat Martin's 5.69/245 with a 5.57/258.69, but he lost to eventual winner White in round two. He then made a stop at Kansas City International for its Summernationals. Ed set Low ET there at 5.62, and he reached the final against Force. The two had a good race, but John's 5.68/261 beat Ed's late leaving 5.65/257.50. Back on the NHRA trail at Englishtown for the Summernationals. McCulloch ran 5.26/271.82 to qualify #4. He stopped Martin again in round one, with a 5.40/266.58. But a second-round 5.47/263.08 lost to Worsham's 5.34/272. Worsham would go on to win the race. McCulloch was way overdue for a win. It almost came at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.43. His speed on the run was 257.80. He beat rookie Len Seroka in round one, with a 5.82/252.31, and a second-round 5.55/256.19 beat Densham's 5.69/218. In the semifinals, his 5.59/257.14 trailered Hofmann at 5.76/253. This put Ed in his second NHRA final of the year. He faced Mike Dunn, who had been running just about a tenth quicker than Ed was throughout eliminations. Sure enough, Mike's 5.47/257 got the victory over Ed, who tried to make up the difference and fouled away a 5.54/255.82. Ed's best NHRA times were 5.237 from Maple Grove and the 282.57 from Phoenix. |

Notes: Rear engine blown fuel. This car was run by McEwen in 1965 and into '66. He had crashed an earlier one in 1965. McEwen set Top Speed at the 1966 Winternationals at 170.45. He then sold the car to Fred Goeske. McEwen drove the car at first for Goeske, before turning driving over to him. Goeske ran this car into 1968 season. | Tom set Low ET and Top Speed at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals on February 13 with a 9.21/178.92 blast. Notes: Direct Drive backed Tirend Activity Booster. For the 1969 season, Tom bought the Candies and Hughes '68 Barracuda (yes, a Logghe car - C&H would go to Don Hardy for '69), installed a Tim Beebe 392 with direct drive, and qualified no. 1 at the Winternationals. At '69 Springnationals, he was runner-up to Danny Ongais in Mickey Thompson's Mach 1. He only ran this car one year. The next year would see the Hot Wheels saga begin. | At the AHRA Winternationals, Tom failed to qualify, running a best of 7.97/193. At the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #1 with a 7.79/193.96 (Low ET) but lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.60 in the first round, with an 8.96. At Bakersfield, Tom ran a first-round 7.78/196.93 (Top Speed) over Ray Alley (8.18/187.50), but a second 7.78/196.73 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.70/195.65 in the semifinal. He failed to qualify at Lions on March 22. On May 4 at Aquasco, he lost to Tommy Grove's 7.91/191.08 in the first round, with an 8.23/164.53. On May 11, he lost a match race against Charlie Allen at Suffolk. At the AHRA Springnationals, a 7.82 qualified him fifth, and he made it to the semifinal before Leonard Hughes ran a 7.52/202.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) to beat Tom's 7.70/188. At the NHRA Springnationals, he qualified third with a 7.78/184.04 and ran 7.63/185.56 over Gas Ronda, a 7.67 over Sid Foster's quicker 7.60, and a semifinal 7.57 over Fritz Callier. A broken rear end ended his chances against Ongais in the final. On June 22 at Aquasco, he lost to Lew Arrington's 8.07/187.88 in the first round, when he smoked the tires to an 8.71/152.28 loss. On July 9 at Atco's fourth annual Funny Car Championships, Frank Oglesby's 7.76/194.80 beat him in the first round. At Capitol's King of Kings Funny Car race on July 16, a first-round 8.07/181.44 failed to beat Jim Liberman's 7.50/177.86 (Low ET). On August 2, Tom singled in the first round, over Ron Rivero at the PHR Championships, who shut off in the K&G Mustang. But in the second round, he broke, giving Dick Loehr a solo into the semis. At the US Nationals, Tom qualified in both Top Fuel and Funny Car with his 'Cuda qualified tenth with a 7.478/206.42. But when good friend John Mulligan had his crash, Tom left to be at the hospital with him. - Ron Howard |

Notes: McEwen ran this car twice during the first ten days of January 1971. At Irwindale Raceway's "New Year's Day Funny Car Championship," he was runner-up to Jim Dunn, and at Lions, during the first AHRA Grand American of the year. At Lions, the Goose had Low ET of the Meet with a questionable 6.55. This car was soon replaced with Tom's 1971 ride, a Ramchargers-powered John Buttera Duster. | 5/71 HRM coverage said the dicey 6.55 was an early shut-off at 198.23! True, not intentional on the 'Goose's part. The story was written, without skepticism, by none other than the renowned Ralph Gudahl (sp.) Jr, with vernacular, apostrophe-absent, driver quotations verging on Ring Lardner's gerund-eliminating speech. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Tom McEwen had a very successful season in '72. It started at Fremont's New Year's race. There, he qualified #7 for the eight-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 8.87 lost to Twig Zeigler's 6.85. He then went to Lions for the Grand Premiere race. Once again, he lost in the opening round; this time, his sleepy 6.85/217.39 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.94/190. Beeline Dragway was his next stop for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car show, and he lasted until round two, where his 6.85 lost to his "Hot Wheels" teammate, Don Prudhomme's 6.75. Tom qualified #5 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.91. He beat Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian" in round one, but he lost to low qualifier Pat Foster in round two. He chose not to run his Funny Car at the Bakersfield March Meet. Instead, he devoted his time to the Top Fuel car there. It proved to be a wise choice. He was back at Fremont on March 12 for the AHRA Northern Nationals. His 6.70 qualified #1. The sixteen-car field was short, so he got to take the "odd-lot" solo in round one. In round two, he ran 6.69/184.04 to beat Tom Hoover, but in the semifinal, his 6.71/204.54 lost to eventual winner Leroy Goldstein's 6.55/216 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. He raced his Top Fuel race at the NHRA Gatornationals. Late in April, he faced Clare Sanders, driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" for a best-of-three match at Epping. McEwen won the match two straight with times of 6.79/201 and 6.61/200. The 6.61 was a new track record. Shortly after that, he was at Green Valley for the AHRA Nationals. An opening round 6.93 beat Cogo Eads, but a 6.91 in round two lost to Bill Leavitt's 6.77. He was the #2 qualifier at Tulsa PRA at 6.581/220.04. Tom also won the AHRA Spring Nationals in Denver with a 6.81/205.90. Tom was also on the losing end of the quickest and fastest pass in funny car history when he lost to Pat Foster's 6.29/234.98 blast in the first round of the NHRA Supernationals. Tom qualified fourth at OMS with a 6.43/225.56 and was a slight favorite when meeting the Barry Setzer Vega. While Foster reset the record book, Tom blew an engine, had a big fire, and stopped in the middle of the track, an inauspicious end to a highly anticipated race. Tom won the final event of 1972 at the OCIR All-Pro event on 12/31/72 with a 6.70/221.13 win over Bob Pickett at 7.04/209.79. It was Tom's first funny car win at OCIR. Tom was the fifth qualifier at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 at 6.58. He ran 6.92 to win round one when Mert Littlefield shut off. He won a close one in round two over Omer Carruthers, 6.60 to 6.62. Round three saw him step up to 6.40 to beat Jim Dunn's 6.64. In the final, he took out nemesis Don Prudhomme with an excellent 6.39 to 6.97 drubbing. Although Ed McCulloch seemingly had a more successful year, Tom McEwen was named the 1972 Drag News "Funny Car Driver of the Year." Several late-season successes, notably his victories at the inaugural PRA "National Challenge 72'" and "The Last Drag Race" at Lions Drag Strip, helped convince Drag News to give Tom the year-end award. He ran strong all year after changing from a Ramchargers to an Ed Pink combination. |

Notes: McEwen had a great season in '72 and hoped for more of the same in '73. While he wasn't quite as successful, it was still a pretty good year for the "Mongoose." He started the season on January 21 at OCIR's second All-Pro race. It was an eight-car field, and he qualified #5 with a 6.85, earning him the right to face low qualifier Sush Matsubara in the first round. In their race, Tom's 6.79/215.31 lost to Sush's 6.76/213. The following week (January 28), he was at Beeline Dragway for the AHRA Winternationals. It was a 32-car show, and he ran 6.54/217.91 to qualify #3. An off-pace 7.30/163.04 lost to Stan Shiroma's 6.66/218 in the "Pacemaker" Vega. Tom won the third OCIR All-Pro race over Matsubara in the final. Both had troubles on their runs; McEwen's 7.72/104.77 got the victory over Sush's 8.08/159. It was then off to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The track was in horrible shape, and trying to get a good time in qualifying was tough. Tom ended up as the second alternate for the show, but when the race was postponed twice for rain, Jim Liberman could not stay, so McEwen took his spot in the field. In the opening round, his 7.60 beat Bill Leavitt's 8.36. But in round two, he lost to Al Bergler's holeshot 8.00/201 that beat his 7.72/206. He raced his top fuel dragster at the Bakersfield March Meet but was back in his "flopper" the following week (March 11) at Fremont for the AHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, he got out of shape and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Leroy Chadderton, driving the "Hawaiian." He then ran his dragster at the NHRA Gatornationals before returning to the funny at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. McEwen qualified #2 and then ran 7.10/212.76 over Leavitt, a 6.96/213.27 over Dave Beebe, and a 12.71/54.77 over a fouling Chadderton to reach the final against Matsubara. This was McEwen's day as he ripped off a 6.69/222.22 in the final for the victory over Sush's 6.86/221. Tom won Ontario 1973 with best times of 6.500/217.91. |

Notes: Tom started the '74 season by qualifying #4 in the sixteen-car field at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race on January 12 with a 6.57. His first-round 6.64/203.16 beat Joe Lee, but he and Gordon Swearingen, driving Jim Terry's Mustang, both broke in round two. McEwen's coasting 14.95 lost to Swearingen's 12.77. Another 6.57 qualified #13 at the AHRA Winternationals. He improved to a 6.49/225.00 in the first round to beat Richard Tharp's 6.50/204. In the second round, he smoked the tires and lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.47/195. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's best of 6.70/215.31 failed to qualify, and to add insult, he crashed into the safety net during qualifying. Early in March, he was at Fresno Dragway for its Winter Race of Champions event. It was an eight-car show, and Tom qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Ed McCulloch. Tom lost their race with a 6.71, but the "Ace" did not get an ET on his run. He won the AHRA Northern Nationals at Fremont on March 31, beating McCulloch in the final with a 6.41/212. In getting there, he ran a 6.50 over Mike Van Sant's 6.66 in the "Hawaiian," a single (6.43) over Don Schumacher, who had lost fire, and a semifinal 6.42 over an out of shape Danny Ongais. It was a strong showing for the "Goose." In mid-April, he had one of the 30 FCs competing at Irwindale for the Coca-Cola Championships. Clarence Bailey broke against him in the opening round, and Tom advanced with a 6.91/187.61. He also got a solo in round two, but he hurt the engine during his run and could not return. The following was (April 27), he was at Seattle for the fifth annual Northwest Open. This was another eight-car show, and he qualified #6. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round and shut down against Kenny Goodell. Tom ran 6.705/215.31 at Pomona, 6.624/220.58 at Columbus, 6.620/216.34 at Englishtown, 6.474/231.36 at Indy, and 6.515/229.00 at NHRA Ontario 10/74. |

Notes: Is the photo from '75 or '76? - JB | Tom ran really well in his Duster in '75, especially on the AHRA Grand American Series. It didn't start so well when he failed to qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, but at Pomona, for the NHRA Winternationals, he ran 6.32 to qualify #5. In the first round, he beat Ed McCulloch with a 6.61/206.89 over Ed's 6.72/197. He lost to Bill Leavitt in the second round. At the Bakersfield March Meet on March second, only 12 Funny Car's showed. Tom qualified #9 with a 6.46/203.16. He fell off to a 6.88 at 164.23 in the first round, and lost to McCulloch. Tom went to OCIR for the AHRA Grand American in March. He ran 6.57 (Low ET) to qualify first. In the first round, a 6.62/216.86 beat Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. In the semifinals, he beat Neil Leffler with a 6.58/210.77. The final saw him facing Jake Johnston in the "Pisano & Matsubara" car. It was a close race, but Tom's 6.77/213.27 won over Jake's 6.78/220. He did not enter the NHRA Gatornationals as it was run on the same weekend as the AHRA race. McEwen was at Irwindale in April for the National Funny Car Championships. He beat Gary Southern in the first round, but then failed to appear for his second-round call and was replaced by Southern. In May, McEwen was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals, where he qualified #8 in the sixteen-car show. He and his opponent, Tripp Shumake, smoked the tires in the first round, but Tom's 6.98 came out on top. In the second round, his 6.84/199.11 lost to Dick Custy's 6.74. The AHRA Springnationals was held at St. Louis, and Tom was there running 6.60/201.35 to qualify #4. Unfortunately, he lost in the first round. A 6.55/203.16 qualified #10 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he went into heavy tire smoke and lost to McCulloch. Tom was the second alternate at Ontario on 10/12/75 at 6.406/230.76. Ran 6.365 205.47 at the US 131 PHR Championships. ET from Manufacturers Meet, Orange County CA 11/01/75 |

Notes: McEwen showed up at OCIR on March 20 with his new Duster. The paint differed from the '75 cars. He was at OCIR for its Fox Hunt race and was one of 27 drivers attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. He made the show, qualifying #13, but he lost to Chris Lane in the opening round. Shortly after, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 opener. It was another sixteen-car field, and his 6.53/217.91 qualified #9. An off-pace 7.48 in the first round lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.14. In April, he was in Kansas City for the AHRA Show-Me Nationals. He lasted until the semi-finals before losing to Tom Hoover. Near the middle of the month, Irwindale held the Coca-Cola FC Championships. This was a big 32-car show that had all cars run two rounds, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Tom's 6.61/177.51 in his first race beat Bill Bailey, but he shut down to an 8.86 loss to Raymond Beadle driving the "Blue Max" in his second race. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. Early in May, he was back at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.40/223 qualified #3.McEwen beat Lane in round one, but in the semi-final, his 6.50/206 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.42/223. He competed at the AHRA Okie Nationals held in Tulsa. He qualified with a 6.78, and after an easy first-round win, he ran 6.95/219.30 over Johnny White's late 6.80/206 in round two. A tire-smoking 7.78/116.12 in the semi-final lost to eventual winner Dale Emery's 6.58/211. Tom did not set the world on fire on the NHRA national event tour, although he was runner-up at Columbus and Englishtown. He ran best times in the 6.30s, hitting 230.17 at the Winters and 230.76 at the World Finals. We need to confirm where he ran 6.13/231.95. We need to verify if the photo is from 1975 or 1976. |

Notes: The car that broke the Corvette curse. Also 6.14/233.76 at 77 US Nats. Won IHRA Winternationals 1977. Ran 6.11 at Milan, 6.37 at Gainesville, 6.18 at Columbus, 6.14 at Englishtown, and 6.14 at Indy. | Tom debuted his Corvette at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. The car failed to qualify, but it was awarded "Best Appearing Professional Car." At the NHRA Gatornationals, Tom qualified #6, but broke on the line in round two, advancing Roger Lindamood. Things went a little better for the "Goose" the following week (March 20) at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car show, and the field was "weak," but Tom's Corvette ran well. He qualified #2 with a 6.79/216 behind Shirl Greer, but he soloed with a 9.47 when Wilfred Boutilier was shut off on the line with an oil leak. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.62/216.86 that beat Pete Miner's 7.48 in his Duster. In the final, he ran Greer. Shirl had problems and slowed while McEwen ran a 6.65/216.86 for the victory. A week later (March 27), he was in another final. This time it was at the NHRA Division 7 race at Fremont. He lost in the final, but it wasn't too bad, as how many cars were outrunning Don Prudhomme at the time? His 6.33/229.59 lost to the "Snake's" 6.20/240. On May 1, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He lost to Dick Bourgeois, driving the Creasy Brothers car, in the first round. He was runner-up to Dale Pulde at the IHRA Dixie Nationals on May 21. On the Memorial Day weekend of May 29 and 30, Tom was at Union Grove for the Olympics of Drag Racing event. All cars ran the first round with the four lowest ETs advancing into the semifinals. McEwen's 6.28 made the semis, where he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" with a 6.16/227.27. In the final, he faced Tommy Ivo, and McEwen got the victory with a 6.26/190.67. The next day, they did it again, and once again, Tom qualified for the semifinals, this time with a 6.36. He met Prudhomme in his semifinal race and lost to Don's 6.15/205. The following weekend (June 5), he was at Amarillo for the IHRA World Nationals. He beat Shirl Greer before losing to Ray Sherman in the semifinals. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.18 qualified #5. Tom failed to reach the finals. He won the IHRA Summernationals at Union Grove on July 4. He qualified #1 with a 6.15 (Low ET), and advanced past the first round with a 6.55/171.75 when Ken Safford fouled in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the semifinals, he beat Tom Prock's 6.52/206 with a 6.34/214.28. In the all Corvette final, Tom ran Jerry Boldenow's "Moby Dick." McEwen's 6.28/218.97 came out on top over Jerry's 6.47/225. That was Tom's first win ever in IHRA competition. He ran really well at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, qualifying #2 to Prudhomme with a 6.14/233.16. His only other pass in qualifying was a 6.23. He beat Bob Pickett in the first round, with a tire smoking 7.13, but he lost to Sherman in round two when he smoked the tires again to a 7.45. McEwen ran at York US 30 on July 16 for the Super Stock Magazine Nationals, but he failed to reach the finals. He qualified #1 at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals with a 6.13. In the first round, a 6.24 beat Boldenow's 6.38. In the semifinals, Tom stepped up to a strong 6.11 and still lost to Gary Burgin's 6.13. On July 31, he was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. A 6.31/224 qualified #2 behind Tom Hoover. In the first round, his 6.31/214.79 beat Gene Snow's 6.68/185. Unfortunately, McEwen broke and was unable to run in the semifinals, so Snow got reinstated. He competed at Atco for its Fuel Funny Car Championships. All cars made two runs, with the two lowest ETs coming back for the final. Tom lost his first race to Les Cassidy's 6.63 with an off pace 8.93. He won his second race with a 6.68/174 over Arnie Swensen's 6.78/193. His times were not good enough to advance to the final. On August 21, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open. He qualified #2 with a 6.29, but in round one, his fuel pump broke, and opponent Bill Leavitt advanced. At the US Nationals at Indy, McEwen qualified #6 with a 6.14/230.17. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.45/200 in the "Blue Max" in the first round, with a 6.20/228. In the second round, his 6.24/233.76 lost to Burgin's 6.08/236. He went to Atco for the IHRA Fallnationals on September 18. A 6.48 qualified #3 in the eight-car field. In the first round, he slipped to a 6.60 that lost to Tom Prock's 6.44. He did not go to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. |

Notes: Won INDY. Silver and Black Vette. Also, 6.264 232.55 at 78 Winters and 231.95 at the 1978 Springnationals. Ran 6.05/235.60 in big Indy win over Prudhomme. This car was sold to Dick Moritz, then to Jamie Hopheimer/Whit Bazemore, Donnie Holbrook, and Troy Ray. | McEwen started his season at the OCIR Super Bowl event in February. Unfortunately, he had problems against Raymond Beadle driving the Blue Max, and shut down to a 10.54 loss in the first round. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, Tom's 6.26/232.55 qualified #5. He beat Dave Condit's 6.45/216 in the first round, with a 6.32/220, and in round two, his 6.42/216 advanced when Gary Burgin fouled. It was a good old "Snake vs. Mongoose" semifinal that saw the "Goose" have problems and slow to a 7.63/137, losing to Don Prudhomme's 6.41/229. He then laid low and the "English Leather" Corvette was not seen again until early May when he showed up at Seattle for the NHRA Division 6 opener. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.29/194.80 qualified #3. He improved by a tenth in round one, where his 6.19/216.86 defeated Jim Moore's 6.79/164. He blasted low qualifier Gordie Bonin in the emi-final with a 6.22/221.67, putting the Firebird's 6.41/230 on the trailer. He faced the "Snake" in the final, and the two old pals had a great race that saw Don get the victory with a 6.11/238 over Tom's 6.18/217.91. The following week (May 13), he was at OCIR for the NHRA Division 7 race. A 6.20 qualified #4 but in the opening round, he extremely late 6.07/217.91 lost to Henry Harrison's 6.29/229. Shortly after that, he was in Portland for the Oregon Open. It was supposed to be a eight-car show but a field was a couple cars short.McEwen got to solo in the first round, and he did, running 6.19/206.89. For some reason, he was given another solo in the semifinal, and this time he shut down at 6.95. Once again, he was up against Prudhomme in the final. This time, the two didn't get a chance to race, as Tom had to shut off on the line with no oil pressure, so the "Snake" solo'ed with a 10.17 for the win. His next stop was Detroit Dragway for the UDRA North American Grandnationals. All cars ran the first round "qualifying," which had the eight lowest ET cars, regardless of winning or losing, advance to the first round of actual competition. Tom set low ET with a 6.23. In the first round of actual competition, he advanced with a 6.34/194.38. In the semifinal, the car again lost oil pressure,e and the "Goose" had to shut it down on the line against Tom Prock. He ended the month of May at the three-day Drag Racing Olympics at Union Grove. He made sure everyone knew that he was there. On Friday, May 27, he qualified for the final four with a 6.36. In the semifinal, he dropped the Pete Williams-driven "Chi-Town Hustler"'s 6.32 with a 6.29. He faced Prudhomme in the final, and the results were the same. Don's 6.14/229 beat his 6.19/221.67. On Saturday, he qualified for the final four with a 6.23. Eighteen cars were attempting to qualify. Tom's time was the third best, but this time the "Snake" got to him in the semifinal. Don's 6.10/236 trailered the Corvette's 6.22/223.32. On Sunday, the field swelled to twenty-four cars. Tom qualified for the final four with a second quickest 6.24. He beat Bob Pickett's 6.43/225 in the semifinal with a 6.32/201.34. Lo and behold, he faced Prudhomme in yet another final round. But this time, the "Snake" got out of shape and had to shut off while McEwen ran 6.28/222.22 for the victory. It was then off to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. A 6.41/211.27 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. He beat a tire-smoking Gene Snow in the opening round with a 6.48/212.76. In the semifinal, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires, but the "Goose's" 7.16 came out on top. He faced his protege, John Collins, in the final. The two had a good race, with the student getting the better of the teacher. Collins' 6.46 took the win over McEwen's 6.67 runner-up effort. That was followed by a trip to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The car got the award for best appearing. This car was more than show, though, and Tom proved it by qualifying second with a 6.16/217.91 behind Prudhomme's 6.07/240. These two would meet in the final (what else is new). McEwen opened up eliminations with a 6.31/216.86 over Bonin's 6.49/223. A second round 6.25/215.31 dispatched Billy Meyer's ailing ride. John Lombardo's 6.26/233 fell to his 6.17/230.76 in the semifinal. The problem was that Prudhomme had won his semifinal heat with a 6.07/241. Tom needed to pick up a tenth for his final round race. He didn't. The two ran almost exactly the same times they had run in the semifinals, with Don's 6.07/240 getting the win over Tom's 6.17/231.95. By this time, McEwen must have been tired of playing second fiddle to the "Snake". The week following the Springnationals (June 18), he was at Alamo Dragway in San Antonio for the AHRA Nationals. There was no Prudhomme in site as he was racing elsewhere. Tom's 6.36/219 qualified second for the eight-car field behind Snow's 6.26/216. After that, McEwen was unstoppable. He beat Raymond Beadle's 6.73 in the "Blue Max" in the first round with a 6.36/219. Like a bracket racer, he ran another 6.36 in the semifinal to beat Hoover's 6.42. He went up against John White in the final, and even though he slowed a bit, to a 6.39/210, he won easily as White had problems and shut down. Both the "Snake" and the "Mongoose" were at Martin, Michigan, on June 24 for the NHRA Division 3 race. Tom's 6.18/217.91 qualified second to Prudhomme's 6.09/237. But the two would never run each other. Tom's easy 6.31 in the first round beat alternate, Paul Radici. In the semifinal, his 6.22/216.86 was beaten by Tom Anderson's 6.20/215. The "Snake" would go on to win. Best NHRA speed was 236.84 at Ontario. Formerly listed 241.28. We need to confirm if the Goose ran that speed in 1978 and where. |

Notes: Tom McEwen was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified on the "bump", but lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in the first round. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.30/231.95 qualified #7 and he beat alternate John Force in the opening round with a 6.31/232.55. In the second round, he lost a motor and the race to Hoover. He then went to LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 race where he got back at Hoover by beating him in the final for the victory. The rain delayed NHRA Cajun Nationals only had an eight-car field. Tom ran 6.46/227.27 to get the last spot in the show, but a first-round 6.43/224.43 lost to Force's 6.40/223. Early in June, he was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, where his 6.49 qualified #3 in another eight-car show. He beat John Collins before losing to Billy Graham in the semifinal. Next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.31/220.58 qualified #15 and a 6.53/214.28 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.41/233 in the first round. He followed that up with a runner-up finish at the North American Grand Nationals at Detroit. A strong 6.22/217 beat Tom Prock in the "Detroit Tiger" in round two and a 6.50 beat Len Imbrogno in the semifinal. But a blown engine in the final slowed him to a 7.14/146 that lost to John Pott's 6.66 in the "Mr. Norm" car. On June 24, McEwen was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. He reset the AHRA Funny Car record to 6.08 at 240.00 in the first round, and a semifinal 6.12/236.22 beat low qualifier Johnny White. He faced Hoover in the final who had also been running well and had reset the AHRA speed record to 242. The two both had problems - Hoover shut off and McEwen won with an 8.00. Hoover and McEwen raced against each other quite a bit in '79 and early in July, the two met for a best of three match race at Houston. McEwen won two straight. The first-round saw his 6.36/209.30 beat Hoover's 6.49/178 and a motor blowing 6.41/209.30 won again. The next NHRA event was the Summernationals at Englishtown. Tom qualified #10 with a 6.23/223.32 and he set Low ET of the first-round with a 6.15 that beat Roy Harris. But he hurt his crank on the run and was unable to show for his second round race against Tripp Shumake. Early in August, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Summernationals. He qualified #1 with a 6.22/232.55 and in the semifinal, set Low ET with a 6.21 to beat Collins. He met Tom Hovland in the final and he overpowered the track, smoking the tires to a 6.72 in a runner-up finish to Hovland's 6.36. Another win came his way at the AHRA World Finals on August 19. There he beat Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the semifinals before setting a track record 6.15 at 223.88 in the final to beat a troubled Gordie Bonin at 13.08. He almost got into the "fives" at Indy for the NHRA U. S. Nationals. His 6.01/238.72 qualified #4. McEwen had scored an emotional victory here the year before and was hoping to repeat. He lasted until the semifinals before his 6.21/234 lost to eventual winner Bonin’s 6.16/240. He then made the trip to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. His 6.18/238.72 qualified #8, but in the opening round both he and opponent Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's car ran 6.24 (McEwen at 238.72 again), but Ridings got the win light. The NHRA season came to an end at Ontario Motor Speedway for the World Finals. McEwen qualified #3 with a 6.24/230.76 and a 6.53/229.59 beat former "Hot Wheels" teammate Don Prudhomme's 6.85/229 in the opening round. But in round two, his 6.57/225.56 fell to Ron Colson's 6.35/236 in the "Hawaiian.” McEwen finished tenth in the NHRA season long points standings. | Where was the 243 run? |
