Notes: Tom started his season at the Super Bowl of Drag Racing event at OCIR in January. It wasn't a great start as although his 6.45/230 in the first round, of eliminations beat Kenny Bernstein, he kicked a couple of rods out of it, and he was done for the day. His next stop was the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field and, in the first round, lost to low qualifier Gary Burgin. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, McEwen qualified #4 with a 6.08/236.84. Unfortunately, he lost to Hank Johnson in the first round. His next stop was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He lasted until round two before his early-shut off 7.83/110 lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn's 6.18/227. At Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.23/229.00. In the first round, he had problems and shut down to a 10.62 loss to Raymond Beadle's 5.99 in the "Blue Max." In April, he was at OCIR for a 64-car show. A first-round 6.23/227.84 lost a close one to Ron Colson driving the "Hawaiian" at 6.22/235. A runner-up finish followed that at the Seattle Opener. The race was run Chicago-style, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. It was an eight-car show, and he singled with a 6.20/225 in the first round, when Jim Moore broke. In round two, Tom lost to Colson's 6.17 with a quicker 6.15. The times qualified both for the final. The "Mongoose" smoked the tires in the final, and his 6.46/169.81 lost to Colson's 6.15/238. He went to Fremont for the NHRA Division 6 race, where he qualified #3 with a 6.09/231.95. However, it rained after qualifying, and the race was postponed. He was unable to come back and run on the rain date. McEwen qualified #11 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.23/234.98. In the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to eventual winner Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," who advanced with a 6.21. He then went to St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Tom set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.49/221.14. But he had a strange first-round race with Larry Gould that saw both cars leave the track. Normally both are disqualified, but for some reason, Gould advanced, and McEwen was out. He failed to qualify at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Shortly after that, he was at Alamo Dragway for the AHRA Nationals. His 6.25 qualified #3, and he got to make an easy solo in the first round, when Paul Gordon broke. The old "Hot Wheels" teammates faced each other in the semifinals, and his 6.35/227 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.28/218.

Notes: Coors was so happy with McEwen in '80 that they stepped up with more cash and a tractor-trailer for '81. Tom was the fourth alternate at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a best of 6.31/230.76. He did better at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.368/226.70 qualified #7. An opening round 6.42/216.86 beat Bryan Raines' 6.47/220. Unfortunately, a 6.32 in round two lost to Bob Pickett's 6.27. The following week (March 15), he was at OCIR for an eight-car show. His 6.29/232.55 (Top Speed) qualified #3. But in round one, the car went into hard tire shake and he shut down to a 13.11 in a loss to Raines' 6.34. He was back at OCIR for the NHRA Western Regional in May. It was another eight-car field and Tom's 6.41/218.97 qualified #6. He beat Tom Ridings in round one, with a 6.47/231.36, but in the semifinals he had problems and shut off against Craig Epperly. Things went his way on May 30 at NHRA Western Regional at Bandimere. He ran 6.55/214.79 and 6.36/223.88 to beat Clint Miller and Rob Williams to reach the final where he faced Gary Densham. McEwen's 6.35/229.00 got the victory over Densham's 6.48/209.

Notes: Tom started his '82 season at Tucson Dragway on January 17 for the AHRA Winternationals. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show. In the first round, he beat Tom Hoover with a 6.42. In the semifinal, he picked up to a 6.38, but he lost to Ed Moore's 6.21 (Low ET). He failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In March, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field, and he lasted until the semifinals before his 6.44/223.76 lost to Tripp Shumake's 6.24/230 in Johnny Loper's "Little Hoss" Arrow. On May 2, he was at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. In the first round, he beat Larry Gould with a 7.23/197.80, but the Corvette came to the line ailing in the semifinals, and he could only coax a 15.53 out of it. We needless to say, he lost the race to Tom Hovland. His next stop was at Fremont for the second NHRA Division 6 race. Tom qualified #5 with a 6.22/226.70. He beat low qualifier Craig Epperly in the first round, before losing to eventual winner Mike Dunn in the semifinals. At the AHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis International, he lost in the first round, to John Force when he crossed the center line. Tom qualified #2 with a 6.14. McEwen had been shying away from the NHRA meets for most of the year, but he made an exception and ran at the NHRA Springnationals on June 13. A 6.13/236.84 qualified #13, but he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the first round. At the AHRA Western Nationals at Bonneville Raceway, Tom won his first-round race over Gary Densham with a 6.33/225. Still, it cost him an engine, and he was unable to run in the semifinal. Densham was reinstated on the "break rule." On August 22, McEwen picked up a big win at Spokane for the AHRA World Finals. A first-round 5.99/236 beat Hank Johnson, and in the semifinal, he roared to a 5.93/249.30 (Top Speed) over Ed McCulloch. In the final, he ran a 6.11 for the victory over Densham's 6.49. Times given at Spokane were questionable at best during this time. However, he did back up the speed when he qualified at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.00/249.30. That time got him the #13 spot on the grid. He made it into the second round before losing to Don Prudhomme. | 6.220 248.75 AHRA US 30 1982 losing in the first round to Don Prudhomme. (Note: The US 30 clocks were very questionable in 1982 (especially the speeds). - Danny White

Notes: Tom started the '83 season at Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. There was not a lot of traction available as Low ET of the meet was 6.80. McEwen qualified #7 in the eight-car field with an 8.53. He lasted until the semifinals, beating Johnny West before losing to eventual winner Don Prudhomme. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, a 6.03/241.93 qualified #4. He beat Ken Veney in round one, with a 6.04/235.60, while in round two, Tom only needed a 6.21 to get around a tire-smoking John Lombardo. In the semifinals, he had problems and shut off to a 7.18 that lost to Frank Hawley's 5.93 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He lost early at the NHRA Gatornationals after qualifying #13 with a 6.01/247.35, but a first-round 6.21/234.37 lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max" at 5.89/246. The following week (March 20), Tom was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #5 for the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he lost to low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the first round. In April, he was at OCIR for the 64-car Funny Car race. He lost to Prudhomme's 6.28 in round two with an off pace 6.99. On April 17, he was in Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and Tom ran a great 5.93/245.23 to qualify third. To show how tough the field was, drivers such as Bernstein, Beadle, Billy Meyer, Gary Burgin, and Dale Pulde failed to qualify! In eliminations, however, McEwen lost to Al Segrini in the first round. On May 2, he scored a win at Tulsa for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 in the eight-car field with a 6.44 behind Prudhomme's 6.29. Tom became the favorite of the two heading towards the final when he beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 6.22/236.84 and, in the semifinals, set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.18/239.36 (track record). In the final, it was the "Snake" vs. The "Mongoose," and the "Goose" prevailed with a 6.20/238.72, stopping Don's 6.51/194. He continued to qualify well when the NHRA tour showed up at Baton Rouge for the Cajun Nationals. Tom qualified #2, but he failed to reach the finals. His next showing was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals on June 5. Tom qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" car. Mark beat McEwen and went on to win the event. The next NHRA race was the Springnationals. He didn't qualify so well there, running 6.11/241.28 for the #14 spot. In the first round, Tom picked up to a 6.06/234.98 but lost to Pulde's quick-leaving 6.07/243. At St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals, McEwen and Prudhomme reversed their finish of the last AHRA race. Once again, Tom qualified #2 with a 6.13/223.33 behind the "Snake's" track record 6.05/244. Tom ran 6.11/227.28 over a tire-smoking John Collins and a 6.57/195.66 over John Force (who also smoked his tires) to meet Prudhomme in the final. Don had been running 6.0s in his races, and in the final, he slowed to a 6.13/243, but it was still enough to beat the "Mongoose's" 6.68/155.18. In early July, the NHRA tour was in Canada for the Grandnationals, and Tom made the trek there. He qualified last in the eight-car show and lost to Veney in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, the "Coors" Corvette qualified in the unlucky #9 spot with a 6.00/242.58. He faced low qualifier Oswald in the first round, and stepped up to a 5.93/247.93, but it wasn't enough to overcome Mark's 5.88/248. He did not go to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, preferring to go to Kansa City for the AHRA Summernationals. It was another "Snake vs. Mongoose" finish there. Tom qualified #3 with a 6.16/238.09 behind Mike Dunn and Prudhomme. McEwen improved to 6.11/229 in round one, to beat Tom Hoover. Dunn lost in that round, and the "Snake" slowed to a 6.40 win. McEwen ran even better in the semifinals, hitting 6.06/237 to send Ron Correnti's 6.29/236 home. But Prudhomme then ran 6.05 (Low ET) in his semifinal win. So once again, the two would race for all the marbles. They had a great race that saw Don's 6.07/239 win over the "Goose's" 6.10/222.

Notes: The "Goose" had one of his best seasons in '84. It didn't start so well at the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #8 in an eight-car show with a 6.52 and lost to Mike Dunn's 6.28/230 in the first round, with another 6.52/214. But at the next event, the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway, he finished runner-up to Kenny Bernstein's 5.98/248 with a 6.07/236.84. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he lost to John Lombardo in the first round. He then ran a career-best (to this point) of 5.83 at 247.25 to qualify #4 at the NHRA Gatornationals. Another 5.83/253.52 in the first round, beat Bob Gottschalk, but in the second round, the Corvette broke, advancing Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." He clicked at the next race, the IHRA Winternationals at Darlington, although he only ran a 5.98 to qualify #6. He eased past the first-round but then picked up the pace with a 5.87/245 in the second round that beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.04/245. In the semifinals, a 5.89 beat Billy Meyer's 5.88. In the final, he ran his old teammate, Don Prudhomme, and the "Snake" had problems while Tom motored to a 5.91/248.61 victory. At the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.86/252.10. He beat Jim Head in the first round, but broke on the line in the second round, advancing Bernstein. He ran well at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships but failed to reach the finals. Tom ran several 5.80s at 250 plus this year, but his best times came in qualifying at Indy with a 5.804/254.23. Notes: Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. Qualified on bump at 85 Gators (5.921). The 5.671 was low qualifier at 85 US Nats. | Tom qualified #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.81/254.66. A first-round 6.03 beat John Martin, but in round two he lost a close won to Al Segrini. His 5.95 lost to Al's 5.94. He lasted until the second round at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals as well. There he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he barely made the show, qualifying #16 with a 5.92/249.58. A consistent 5.94/246.17 in the first round, beat Segrini, but once again he lost in round two. This time John Lombardo stopped him in the "Blue Max."

Notes: Tom had a great season in '86. The season started on a bad note when his 5.93/212.26 failed to qualify for the eight-car field at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in January. He wasn't at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but he made sure he was noticed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #7 with a 5.82/253.52. A 5.86/247.93 beat Ray Higley in the first round, and in round two, a 5.86/249.03 beat a tire-smoking Billy Meyer. He faced low qualifier Kenny Bernstein in the semifinals, and McEwen was up to the task. He left on time and beat Bernstein's quicker 5.65/255 with a 5.677/256.11. That put him into the final with Ed McCulloch. Unfortunately, Tom's Corvette broke, and the "Ace" soloed for the victory. He qualified #2 at the IHRA Bayou Nationals but failed to reach the finals. He didn't have a very good outing for the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. His best of 6.11/238.47 in qualifying put him in the #15 spot, and he lost to eventual winner McCulloch in the first round. Shortly after that, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. McEwen qualified second to Mark Oswald, and in the opening round, his 5.78/255.68 advanced over Scott Kalitta, who crossed the centerline. In the semi-final, his 5.77/257.87 lost to Kenny Bernstein's track record 5.58 at 246. He sure ran well at the next NHRA race, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge, where he found himself in the winner’s circle. It started with a 5.70/257.87 that qualified #3. An easy 5.99/242.06 advanced past the first round when John Martin failed to show. In the second round, his 5.78/249.16 beat Tim Grose's 5.89/239. In the semifinals, a 5.85/236.71 beat Oswald's 5.94/251 in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird. That put him into the final against Billy Meyer. Meyer smoked the tires and Tom roared to a 5.78/249.16 for the victory. He continued to run well at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where after qualifying #4 with a 5.77/252.17, he made his way to the semifinals before having problems and shutting off to a 6.43/143.28 loss to Bernstein's 5.72/255. The following week (June 22), he was runner-up to Oswald at St. Louis for the IHRA Gateway Nationals. He was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals on June 29. McEwen qualified #6 with a 5.85/240.77 and a first-round 5.82/233.28 beat Jim Head, but in the second round, he went up in smoke and lost to Johnny West's 5.79/259 in the "Hawaiian." Milan, Michigan, was his next stop on July 6 for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Tom qualified #6 in the eight-car field with a 5.99/227.27, and once again, he smoked the tires, losing to McCulloch in the first round. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Tom qualified #5 with a 5.69/254.66. He got payback by beating McCulloch in the first round, but in round two, he had problems and shut off against Oswald. A week later (July 20), he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. He ran well, qualifying #2 for the show, but failed to reach the finals. His best NHRA times were the 5.677 from Gainesville and 257.87 at the Cajuns. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Notes: Tom started the '87 season at Firebird Raceway's Super Bowl of Drag Racing event in Jan. He qualified #4 in the eight-car show with a 5.93/231.36. In the opening round of eliminations, the fans were treated to a good old, “Snake" vs. "Mongoose" race. This time around, McEwen’s out of shape 7.25/111.24 held on to win over Don Prudhomme's tire-smoking, shut off, 14.52. Tom smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force. Not long after that, he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. A 5.69/244.56 qualified #13, but a slightly better 5.68/247.04 lost to Ed McCulloch's 5.53/266 in round one. He was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #5. He beat alternate Scott Kalitta in the first round, and in the semifinals, he got around McCulloch easily as Ed’s 'chute had fallen out. He went up against Kenny Bernstein's bad Buick in the final and Tom's 5.87/243 finished runner-up to Bernstein's 5.73/256. A week later (March 22), he was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. There, his 5.84/244.43 qualified #15. Once again, he faced the "Snake" in the first round, but this time Prudhomme's 5.70/263 put the "Goose's" 5.86/239.36 on the trailer. Tom drove Raymond Beadle's "Blue Max" to a runner-up finish at the NHRA Winston All-Star race held at the Texas Motorplex early in April, but he was back in his own car the following week (April 11) for the Coors Funny Car Championships at Firebird. The race was run "Chicago Style," with all cars making two runs and the two with the lowest ETs would race in the final. Tom did not have much luck here as first he smoked the tires and shut off to 8.84 in a loss to Force's 5.88, and in his second race against Johnny West driving the "Hawaiian,” McEwen got slightly out of shape and crossed the centerline. If he thought his luck was bad there, it got even worse at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Only sixteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, and it was a good thing for Tom. He lost two superchargers in qualifying, and his 7.11/104.63 best held for the #15 spot in the field. He lost another supercharger in the first round, while losing to Tom Hoover. After that, McEwen disappeared from competition until June 14 when he showed up at Columbus and attempted to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals. Unfortunately, his 6.17/218.02 best was good for the fifth alternate. The following week, he was at Brainerd for the Crown Funny Car Championships, but his 6.56/157.61 lost to Doc Halladay's 5.90/251 in the first round. After that, he followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. Only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field, so qualifying wasn't much of an issue as McEwen qualified #14 with a 12.63/82.88. He surprised Bruce Larson in the first round, where Tom's 5.91/240.70 beat Larson's 5.93/247. But the Corvette broke in round two, giving Billy Meyer an easy ride into the semifinals. He also returned to IHRA competition at Milan for the Northern Nationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field, and in the first round, his 5.79/253 lost to low qualifier Bernstein’s 5.63/261. The next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Tom ran 5.85/248.89 to qualify #15 and in the first round, he improved to 5.76/250.97 to stop McCulloch. He lost to Mike Dunn driving Joe Pisano's car in round two. At Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, Tom qualified #11 with a 5.97/241.93. His 6.02/236.53 in the opening round lost to West's 5.95/241. On August 1, he was competing at the Motorcraft Funny Car Challenge race held at the Texas Motorplex. It was another "Chicago Style" race. In the first round, McEwen’s 5.80/245.63 lost to Hoover's 5.59/264. In his second race, his quicker 5.83/245.83 lost to Meyer's 5.84/231. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. He was back at Brainerd on August 16 for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. His 5.83/248.48 qualified #14 and he broke in the first round against McCulloch. It was then off to Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. McEwen qualified #4 and then beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.79/248.62. But in the semifinals, he lost to Mark Oswald driving the "Candies and Hughes" car. He was running really well at Indy for the NHRA Nationals. Twenty-seven cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field and McEwen's 5.65/258.91 got him the #8 spot in the field. In the first round, both he and opponent Prudhomme ran 5.70 (Tom at 244), but the "Snake" crossed the stripe first. He did not race at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open, but he was at Maple Grove for the NHRA Keystone Nationals. There, his 5.74/244.76 qualified #11. But he had problems and was unable to show for his first-round match against Tim Grose. After 6.009/215.31 and 5.902/248.41 DNQs at the Chief Auto Parts Nationals and the Arizona Fallnationals, Tom got it together for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified with a strong 5.501/261.02 for #7. However, gremlins returned in round one, and Tom lost to Scott Kalitta, 6.260/220.53 to 7.659/119.20. Before the World Finals, McEwen got a call from Coors telling him that they would not renew their contract for '88. Word had been that he was OK came from his 7-year sponsor in September, but they had a change of heart by October. They didn't care if he ran the finals or not. | Did Tom run 263.92 in IHRA this year? | ND: Dale Armstrong helped out with the 5.50 at the 'Finals. - Joe Moore

Notes: Ran 7.46 at OCIR. | Bob was at Irwindale for the Gold Cup Championships on August 1. He got to the final round, but had a bit of luck along the way. It was a sixteen-car show and in the first round, he ran 7.86/181.80 to get around a tire smoking Jr. Brogdon. In round two, his 8.01/185.56 lost to Dick Poll's 7.91/190, but Poll broke and McFarland got back in on the "break rule." In the semifinals, he faced Gene Conway, but Gene's Corvette caught fire so Bob advanced to the final with an easy 8.55/168.22. There his luck changed as he blew an engine and Dave Beebe soloed for the win with an 8.05/176. On August 15, he was at OCIR for its Anniversary Race. Once again it was a sixteen-car field. In the first round, a 7.90/169.81 got past Jack Chrisman's ailing Mustang at 8.16/151. In round two, his 7.87/176.47 lost to Conway's 7.33/194. Bob was back at OCIR on August 29 for an eight-car show. He failed to qualify, but got in as an alternate. It didn't do him much good, however, as a first-round 8.06/192.71 lost to Conway's 7.03/204. At Irwindale's Labor Day Championships, his 7.71/184.04 in the first round, lost to eventual winner Mike Snively who ran 7.33/201 to win. Lions held its Anniversary Race near the end of September. McFarland qualified for the eight-car show, but he lost fire on the line in the first round, against eventual winner Beebe in the "Dodge Fever" car.
