Notes: Simon won over a sixteen-car field at the Bakersfield March Meet. After an easy first-round win, he ran 6.30/229.00 in round two over Henry Harrison, who had his parachute fall out early. In the semi-final, Jim Dunn broke against him, and he advanced with a 6.41/225.00. He faced Jim Adolph in the final, and Menzies' car broke and slowed to 10.95, but that was enough for the win when Adolph crossed the centerline and was disqualified. Menzies was at Rockingham in May for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. His 6.29 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost in the opening round. In June, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals but ended up as the fourth alternate with a 6.40 best. His next stop was at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A 6.41 qualified #3 in the eight-car field, but he lost a blower belt in round one and slowed to a 6.61 loss against Raymond Beadle's 6.31 in the "Blue Max." Simon's 6.34/233.16 was the first alternate at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. The team ran 4/5 NHRA national events with best times of 6.30/235.60 at Seattle. Used Nitrous. The team began the year with a Donovan but switched to a Keith Black Hemi in the racing year. |

Notes: Billy ran 6.781/214.28 at the Tulsa PRA race and 6.74 at Bristol. He ran 6.51/218.97 at the '72 OCIR Manufacturer's Meet, Billy's first big win as an 18-year-old. He ran well at the Lions Last Drag Race on December 2 but was involved in some controversy. Billy qualified #6 at 6.58 and then took a 6.69 win over a broken Kelly Brown in the Wonderwagon Vega in round one. In round two, he beat Bill Leavitt, 6.81 to 6.87. Billy was late getting to the lanes for his semifinal matchup with Don Prudhomme, so the Lions management replaced him with the Low ET loser of round two, Omer Carruthers. This episode was captured in a Dave Deal cartoon during coverage of the meet in one of the mags of the day. |

Notes: First of two Mustangs. Billy failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but it was due more to the terrible track conditions. In March, he went to Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals but failed to qualify when his Mustang's body collapsed at speed, causing the throttle to stick open. Billy went for the 'Chute, and it failed. At that point, he was just along for the ride. He ended up going into a lake at the far end of the track. There was a bank approaching the lake, and Meyer went sailing over it and into the middle of the lake. The body had been torn off, and when the chassis hit the water, the rear slicks were the only things that kept the car from going completely underwater. He lost consciousness but was rescued by his mechanic, Ronnie Guymon, who had driven through a barbed wire fence to reach the lake. He dived into the water and pulled Meyer from the car. Billy was taken to the hospital, where he stayed for a couple of days. Meyer's racing activity was curtailed for a while before he returned to driving late in July. He was at Rockford on July 29 for the fifth annual Manufacturer's Meet. He had a so-so day there. He won his first race when Shirley Muldowney's parachute fell out 200 feet into her run. He lost to Kenny Safford's 6.77 in the "Mr. Norm" car in his second race. Some info from an SIR radio spot. |

Notes: Waterman built Hemi. Billy ran 6.197 for Low ET and a National Record at Indy in '74 but ended up smoking the tires in a rain-delayed final and lost to the Snake in the ARMY 'Cuda. Ran 6.34 at Bristol, 6.44 at Englishtown, 6.44 at Ontario. | Billy Meyer was 19 in '74, and he had already been behind the wheel of a funny car for a few years. He had won the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet at only 17 years of age! Before this new Mustang II was built, he had already been involved with four other Funny Car's. His new car was built by S&R and used a 118" chassis. The fiberglass Mustang II body came from J&E. Sid Waterman built the Hemi, which used a Moldex 1/2 stroker crank for a displacement of 484. M/T pistons held Venolia pistons. Crower was the choice for the camshaft. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold, and on top of the GMC 6/71 sat an Enderle fuel injection unit fed by a Hilborn pump. A Lenco transmission transferred the power back to a Ford rear with 3.90 gears. The car wasn't cheap to build as it cost Meyer $25,000. The August '74 issue of Drag Racing USA claimed that the car's best (at the time) was 6.35/231. Billy started the '74 season by qualifying #4 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.41. A first-round 6.48/211.26 advanced when Russell Long shut off early. In the second round, a 6.72/195.22 beat Gordon Mineo's 6.83/188. Unfortunately, he was shut off on the line in the semifinals with an oil leak. Billy was at Englishtown in June for a best of three match race against Russell Long, who was driving one of "Jungle Jim" Liberman's Vegas. The two had a really close first race that saw Meyer's 6.86/195.65 beat Long's 6.87/174. Both lost traction in the second race, but Billy's 8.13/119.65 still came out on top over Russell's 8.36/181. Meyer had already won the match, but the two came out for a third run. The Mustang II ended up exploding a blower and slowing to 7.41/146.81 that lost to Long's 7.05/152. Shortly after that (June 16), he went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.49 qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field. In the opening round, his 6.55/200.89 beat Bob Lagana's 6.90/191. He really picked it up in round two, where his 6.37/218.97 defeated Ron Colson's 6.53/218 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Shirl Greer blew his engine and caught fire in the semifinal, so Billy's 6.56/213.27 advanced easily. He went up against the "Black Magic" Vega of Al Segrini in the final. Their best times in eliminations were so close as Al had run a 6.38 best compared to Meyer's 6.37. It was going to be anyone's race. Meyer rose to the occasion, running Low ET at 6.34/223.88 to win over Segrini's 6.43/228. Another match race was run at West Salem, where he lost the match to Denny Savage driving the "Hawaiian." He also reached the final of IHRA's next national event, the Northern Nationals held at Mid America Dragway at the end of June. The final was kind of embarrassing for Meyer as he had to shut off on the line due to one of his headers falling off. Colson soloed for the victory. During the month, he had also driven the "Keeling and Clayton" car at several events. On July 3, he competed at the Funny Car Spectacular at Englishtown. He set Low ET in his first-round race, where he ran 6.50/202.70 to beat Roy Harris' 6.93/210 in "Jungle Jim" Liberman's second car. Unfortunately, the car broke on the burnout in the semifinal against eventual winner Raymond Beadle. He suffered three straight losses to Colson at Bluegrass Dragway. His best time for their match was only 7.12, while the "Chi-Town" car ran in the 6.7's and set track records. Many people had Meyer on their radar for the NHRA Summernationals, as when his car was right, he was tough to beat. A 6.55 qualified #7, and he improved to 6.44/210.77 in the opening round to beat an out-of-shape Larry Fullerton in the "Trojan Horse." But he was disappointed in the second round, where he smoked the tires at 7.48 in a loss to eventual winner Segrini's 6.60. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. A 6.78/191.08 qualified #7 in the eight-car show. Unfortunately, he had problems in the first round against Kosty Ivanof and shut off to a 10.14/67.77. Billy did not run high speeds ever on the NHRA tour. His 6.287/223.32 low qualifier at Indy was his fastest. The 6.197 was at only 218.44 on race day. Where did he run the cited 231? |

Notes: AKA California Chargers. Billy Meyer made his first appearance behind the wheel of this car in '75 at Irwindale's Doubleheader event in June. Things didn't go very smoothly as he broke a rear end in the first round, against Fred Mooneyham in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. Billy was driving the Keeling and Clayton car at the NHRA Division 7 Opener at Sacramento in June. He didn't get very far as he fouled away a 6.76 in the first round, against Jim Dunn. |

Notes: Billy drove for Gene at the Winters and Gators, at a minimum. See Raymond Beadle in 75 also. | Billy was driving for Snow early in '75 while Gene was recovering from back surgery. He first filled in at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, where he qualified on the "bump" of the sixteen-car field with a 6.89. He did pretty well in eliminations, however, as he beat Bill Leavitt and Don Prudhomme in the first two rounds before losing to low qualifier Neil Leffler in Jim Terry's Mustang in the semifinals. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, he qualified #10 with a 6.39, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.15/117.95 loss to Prudhomme's 6.39/189.87. He lasted until the second round at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Billy qualified #10 with a 6.52 and in the first round, beat Paul Smith's 6.52/206 with a 6.51/200.44. But in the second round, he lost to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Photo from the 1975 NHRA Gatornationals, Gainesville, Florida. |

Notes: Meyer tried hard to be the NHRA Funny Car Champion for '77. You have to give him credit, as he had a rough season. Before the NHRA season started, he went to Irwindale for the New Year's Day race. He made it into the final before losing to Jim Dunn. At Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he failed to qualify. The same thing happened at the NHRA Gatornationals, where his best of 6.76 was good for the first alternate. A week later (March 20), he was at LaPlace for the NHRA Division 4 Opener, where he took the win. He stopped off at Irwindale for the 64-car Funny Car show but failed to run well enough to reach the finals. On May 15, he was in Houston for the NHRA Division 4 race. A 6.75/203 beat Paul Smith in the first round, but he got out of shape in the semifinals against eventual winner Dale Emery and shut off to an 8.78. Meyer's next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was only an eight-car field, and his 6.50/207.85 qualified #5, meaning that he would race low qualifier John Lombardo in the first round. John fouled in their first-round race, and Billy's 6.68/187.50 advanced. In the semifinals, he set Low ET with a 6.41/211.26 to beat Rob Bruins' 6.91/171 in the "Green Elephant." This put him into the finals against Johnny White. Unfortunately, Billy broke, and White got the win with a 6.64/197. At the NHRA Springnationals, Meyer qualified #2 with a 6.11 and lasted until the semifinals, where he broke a valve and slowed to a 7.05 loss to Bob Pickett. He did well at the Byron Manufacturer's Race, where he ran a best of 6.35. In the final, he ended up as runner-up to Don Prudhomme with his 6.44/228 losing to the "Snake's" 6.27/234. Meyer won the NHRA Division 3 race at US 131 Martin, Michigan, in July. A final round 6.22 (Low ET) at 219.31 beat Ron Colson's 6.34/218 in the "Hawaiian." It was then off to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He came off the trailer on Friday and blew an engine on a 6.46 qualifying attempt. After installing a new engine for Saturday's qualifying, Billy ran 6.17 to qualify the car easily, but he decided to make one more pass Saturday night. It was a 6.41. After qualifying ended, Meyer's 6.17/225.00 held for the #4 spot in the field. In the first round, Al Segrini shut down to a 12.76 while Billy hurt an engine on a 6.78. More thrashing in between rounds. In round two, he again got lucky when Dodger Glenn got out of shape and shut off the "Frantic Ford," and Meyer advanced with a 6.82/170. In the semifinals, he ran Ray Sherman, and Sherman went up in smoke, and a 6.66/193 propelled Billy into the final against Prudhomme. There, Meyer's Camaro broke, and Prudhomme soloed to the victory. He then followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.33/216.34 qualified #4. In the opening round, Meyer's 6.54/205 beat Al Hanna's 6.47/222, but on the run, his engine let go, causing the car to go into a fireball. Meyer got it stopped, and he received second-degree burns on his hands. The Camaro body was destroyed, and the chassis was burnt pretty badly. He then borrowed Johnny White's Mustang to drive at the NHRA Division 4 race in Baton Rouge. He also borrowed Al Bergler's car. It wasn't until Indianapolis before he was back in his own car. There, he qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 6.18/227.84. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Don's 6.14/234 beat Billy's 6.28/218.97. Everything "clicked" for Meyer in Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.19/213.27. He made an easy 9.56 pass in the opening round when Mike Miller's Mustang broke on his burnout. He was involved in a tire-smoking battle with Jim Adolph that saw Meyer's 6.56 coming out on top in round two. He won his semifinal race with a 6.90/195 when Gary Cochran crossed the centerline in Jim Terry's Skyhawk. That put him in the final against Dunn. Jim was to slouch as he had run 6.2s in eliminations. In the final, Dunn shut off, and Meyer got his first NHRA National Event win with a 6.53/211.26. Billy is credited with starting the semi-tractor craze to racing (see the trailer in the rear). Featured in Car Craft's Rich Man, Poor Man article. Ran 6.76 at Gainesville, 6.110 at Columbus, 6.17 at Englishtown, 6.33 at Sanair, 6.18 at Indy, and 6.19 at Ontario. |
