Notes: Billy was still running his Camaro when he showed up at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify. In March, he was driving his new Arrow at the NHRA Gatornationals, where he qualified #6 at 6.36/235. He broke an engine in the first round, but his 6.37/221 still beat Pat Foster's 6.39/230 in Joe Pisano's Firebird. A new Milodon was installed for round two, and he blew the oil pan off while running a 6.91/192 that advanced over Tim Kushi's troubled 13.51. In the semifinals, he singled with a 9.32 when Gordie Bonin failed to fire. In the final, he met Dale Pulde. This would not be easy, as Pulde had been running steady 6.3s. Sure enough, Dale prevailed with a 6.42/234 over Meyer's runner-up effort of 6.52/213.77. Still, not too bad for a new car. The following week (March 19), he won the NHRA Division 4 Opener at LaPlace. He qualified #2 with a 6.56/214.79 behind Tripp Shumake's 6.52/207. Meyer set Low ET in the opening round with a 6.28 that beat Raymond Beadle, who smoked the tires in the "Blue Max." His 6.37/221.67 took out Tom Prock's off-pace 7.18/147 in the "Detroit Tiger" in the semifinal. He stopped Tom Hoover's 6.81/204 in the final with a 6.71/218.44. Early in April, he was at Fremont for the NHRA Division 7 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.21/221.67. Unfortunately, the car broke on the run, and he could not run in eliminations. His next stop was at Green Valley Raceway for the second NHRA Division 4 race. His 6.34/214.79 qualified #4. He improved to 6.25/226.13 in the opening round to defeat Larry Brown. The car broke a rod in the semifinal while doing a burnout to prepare for its race against Billy Graham. Meyer was at OCIR later in April for its enormous 64 Funny Car show. He lasted until round two before losing to Ed McCulloch.Baton Rouge hosted the NHRA Cajun Nationals at the end of the month (April 30). It was an eight-car show, and Meyer qualified #6 with a 6.50/222.22. In the first round, his 6.60/229.00 fell to Hoover's 6.52/226. Billy was at Cayuga in May for the NHRA Division 1 race. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 6.45 (Low ET). He then beat Rick Johnson in the opening round with a 6.54/209.79. In round two, he got a solo as both Roy Harris and Ron Colson had broken in their first-round match. In the final, he faced Al Segrini, and the two had a great race that saw Al's 6.56/222 beat Billy's slightly quicker 6.55/227.84 (Top Speed). Edgewater hosted an eight-car show that was to have all eight cars make three runs, with the two Low ET cars coming back to run for the final. In Billy's first race, his 6.40 beat Dale Creasy. In the second race, his 6.41 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.12. He ran his best time in the third race, a 6.32, but he still lost to Denny Savage's 6.19. Meyer did not run quick enough to reach the final. He qualified #14 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.32/230.17, and in the first round, his 6.40/209.30 advanced when Denny Savage shut down early with problems. But in round two, Meyer had troubles and shut down to an 8.10/113.78 loss to Tom McEwen's 6.25/215. At the beginning of the year, Meyer had switched from the KB engines he had used in '77 to Milodon engines for '78. But around the beginning of July, he ordered four new KB engines to replace the Milodon motors he had been running. Delivery was to take eight to ten weeks. He was at Byron for its Manufacturer's race, where his 6.47/218.44 beat Bill Pryor in round one. But although he set Low ET and Top Speed in his next round race against McEwen, his 6.31/238.72 lost to Tom's 6.33/214. He really qualified well at Englishtown, where a 6.060/236.84 got him the #2 spot in the field, but he was upset by Segrini in the first round. | The 6.060 was his best NHRA ET for this year, and a 241.93 at the World Finals was his best NHRA speed. Billy ran 5.99 at New England in August. Did he also run a 5.97 somewhere this year? |

Notes: Billy qualified #12 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He faced Don Prudhomme in the first round, and his 6.18/241 beat the "Snake's" 6.32/201. Meyer lost to eventual winner Tom Hoover in round two. He qualified #5 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 6.28/241.28, and in the first round, his 6.35/239.36 beat Dale Pulde, who smoked the tires, but a 6.37/236 in round two lost to Prudhomme's 6.31/236. He failed to qualify at the rain-postponed NHRA Cajun Nationals. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.17/241.93 qualified #5, but an off-pace 6.68/170.45 in the opening round lost to Prudhomme's 6.21/228. Billy ran really well at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Although he "only" qualified #4 in the eight-car field, he made it into the final, where his 6.51 beat Raymond Beadle's 6.86 for the money. Earlier, Meyer had set a 231.36 track speed record. The following week (July 8), he won the NHRA Division 4 race at Amarillo. He did not run as well as he was used to at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. His 6.25/239.36 qualified #12, and he went down to Beadle in the first round. |

Notes: Won 1980 Cajuns over Paul Smith. | Meyer qualified #7 at the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.11/233.32, but failed to make the finals. Baton Rouge hosted the Division 4 Opener on March 9 and there finished runner-up to Raymond Beadle in a close 6.24/233 to 6.27/230.17 final. The following week (March 16) at Gainesville for the Gatornationals he qualified #6 with a 6.09, but crossed the centerline in the first round, and was disqualified. He was runner-up again in April at the Division 2 Opener at Warner Robins when he broke in the final after setting Low ET at 6.21. At the fifth annual Cajun Nationals, Billy qualified #2 in the eight-car show with a 6.08. He beat Henry Harrison in the first round, with a 6.51/227 and in the semifinal a 6.32/226 beat Tripp Shumake. In the final he beat Paul Smith with a 6.66/215.31 for the victory. Meyer continued to run well, posting another victory on May 18 at Bristol in the IHRA Springnationals. There he qualified #5 and met low qualifier Beadle in the first round. A 6.13/239.36 (Top Speed), dispatched the "Blue Max's" smoky run. In the semifinals, a 6.44 beat Kenny Bernstein's 6.59. In the final, he met and beat Roy Harris' 6.53/226 with a 6.20/234.37. Things looked good for Billy heading into the NHRA Springnationals on June 8. A 6.18/226.70 qualified #5 and a first-round 6.09 beat Bob Pickett. In the second round, he got a single when Don Prudhomme was shut off with an oil leak on the line. Unfortunately, in the semifinal, Meyer's reverser locked up after his burnout, and he could only watch as Beadle singled into the final. He qualified #1 with a 6.23/238.09 (Top Speed) at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. A first-round 6.35/225.56 beat Roy Harris's 6.66/198. In the semifinal, Beadle's 6.20/231 beat his 6.29/201.79. The Summernationals at Englishtown was the next national event on the NHRA schedule and Meyer qualified #4 with a 6.043. He made his way to the final to meet with Prudhomme. In the final an off pace 6.58/192.71 gave him a runner-up spot to Don's 6.10/238. A week later (July 20), he was back in the winner's circle at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern National. At first things didn't look so good when he only qualified #7 in the eight-car field. But he beat Paul Smith in the first round, and a surprisingly strong Len Imbrogno in the semifinals before meeting Dick Rosberg in the final. His final round 6.12/227.27 beat Rosberg's right there 6.12/230. He was back at Bristol on August 3 for the IHRA Summernationals and hoping for a sweep at Bristol after winning the Springnationals earlier in the year. Billy qualified #1 with a 6.20 (Low ET) at 221.67. He beat Al Baldwin in the first round, with a 6.26/224.43 and a 6.21/231.95 in the semis took out Roy Harris. In the final, a 6.65/227.27 was a tenth off of Paul Smith's winning 6.55/221 in Larry Coogle's "Sting." A week later, he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. He was the first alternate for the eight-car field with a 6.36/218.97, but when Tom Motry crashed in qualifying, Billy got in as an alternate. He showed what he could do by setting Low ET of the first-round with a 6.12 that beat Harris' 6.26, but in the semifinals, his reverser broke after his burnout, giving Gary Burgin a solo into the final. On August 17, Meyer got another runner-up finish at the Division 3 race at Beech Bend. A first-round 6.26/235.60 beat Ron Colson's quicker 6.17/236 in the "Hawaiian." In the semifinals, his 6.14/204.54 beat Beadle's 6.20/235 to move into the finals against Dale Armstrong. Meyer ran a strong 6.20/238.72 (Top Speed), but finished second best to Armstrong's 6.16/236. Meyer skipped running the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but he was at Indy for the US Nationals. He qualified #6 with a 6.044/236.84 and in round one, his 6.13/229.00 beat Armstrong's 6.39/220. In round two, a 6.18/234.37 got around Prudhomme's 6.27/226. In the semifinals, a tire shaking 6.46/188 lost to upstart Tom Ridings in Joe Pisano's Arrow at 6.12/236. He continued to run well in IHRA competition as well, qualifying #1 with a 6.12/217.91 at Rockingham for the US Open. Dale Pulde did beat him in the first round, however and Meyer went on to Seattle for the NHRA Fallnationals. A 6.21 qualified #6, and he lasted until the semifinal when Beadle beat him with a 6.01. The same song and dance happened at the season ending NHRA World Finals when Meyer was beaten again by Beadle in the semifinals, this time Raymond's 6.11 beat Meyer's off pace 6.88. In NHRA's season long points chase, Meyer finished second to Beadle. - RH |

Notes: This was an expensive year for Billy. He qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.04/243.24. Billy then beat John Collins, Denny Savage, and a fouling John Force in the semifinals with a 6.35. In the final, he faced Raymond Beadle, and Billy was not the favorite. Beadle had beaten Don Prudhomme in the semifinals with a track record 5.93 at 245.23. But in that race, the body's roof first collapsed and then blew off. The "Blue Max" crew didn't have a spare body with them, so Texas neighbor Kenny Bernstein offered them the use of his spare body. So, before the final, they grafted the roof off of Bernstein's car onto theirs. It looked OK, but Meyer took the victory in the final with a 6.52/205.94 over Beadle's 6.66/236. The win probably cost Meyer more money than he made, as he used up four engines in the event. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #9 with a 6.05/237.46. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Prudhomme. Billy lost to Don's 5.97/245. A week later (March 22), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Things didn't go so well; on Friday, he had a major fire that burned up the Citation body during qualifying. The race was rain-delayed by one week to March 28, and during a trial run, his supercharger exploded, sending it up 35 feet. fireball. The body and interior tin were cracked and broken, but Meyer was OK and still qualified for the show. In the first round, he smoked the tires and shut off to an 8.89/100 loss to Beadle's 6.29/234. The NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta had an eight-car field, and Billy's 6.16 qualified #7. He slowed to 7.08 in the first round, in a loss to Bernstein's 6.08. More problems arose at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Billy could not get the Citation down the track. It shook the tires and got out of shape on its qualifying passes, and the best ET was 10.33. Luckily for Meyer, only eight cars showed for the eight available spots, and his time held up. His 6.32 beat John Pott's 6.47 in the "Powers Steel" car in round one. A semifinal 6.26/213.77 beat Bernstein's 6.28/226, and Billy found himself in the final against Beadle. Once again, Billy was not the favorite as the "Max" had run IHRA's first 5-second (5.99) time in qualifying, and he backed it up with a 6.00 in the first round. In the final, Meyer smoked the tires to a 7.46 while Beadle picked up the victory with a 6.23. His next stop was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. After using up two more engines in qualifying, his 6.19 qualified #6. But then his luck began to turn. In the first round, Roy Harris smoked the tires against him, and Billy advanced with a 6.28. In the semifinals, his quick-leaving 6.48 beat Paul Smith's quicker 6.45. This set up another Meyer vs. Beadle final. This time, Billy turned the tables, and his 6.21/228.42 got the win over Beadle's 6.26/236. The Funny Car drivers boycotted the NHRA Cajun Nationals, so Meyer's next stop was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He picked up the win by stopping Bernstein in the final with a 6.17/216. At Columbus, for the NHRA Springnationals, Billy's 6.14/233.76 qualified #6, but a first-round 6.47/238.09 lost to Fuzz Miller's 6.40/222. On July 4, he was at Bandimere for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. His 6.29/226.70 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. A first-round 6.28/231.36 beat Miller's 6.34/229, but a semifinal 6.49/219.51 lost to Beadle's 6.21/229. He was runner-up to Beadle at the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 12, and the following week (July 19), he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He again used two engines in qualifying, finally making the show with a 6.06/238.72 for the #8 spot. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the first round against Miller and shut off to an 8.59/100.22. His next stop was in Atlanta for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. It was an eight-car field, and Billy qualified #4 with a 6.29/217.39. He improved to a 6.13/219.51 on a solo in the first round when Rick Deschner's Monza broke, and a semifinal 6.07 gave him Low ET and a win over Harris' 6.27. In the final, he faced Tom Anderson driving Jim Wemett's Arrow. Meyer had problems and shut down to 6.66/163.93 in a runner-up finish to Anderson's 6.29/229. Meyer ran his first-ever "5" at Bristol on August 2. His 5.99/235 gave him the pole for the IHRA Summernationals and the time held for Low ET as well. An opening round 6.13/234.98 beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." Unfortunately, he smoked the tires in the semifinals and lost to Bernstein's 6.30. The following week, he was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. It was another eight-car field, and Billy qualified #1 with a track record 5.896 at 240.64. But in the first round, he overpowered the track, and his smoky 6.57/203.16 lost to eventual winner Prudhomme at 6.24/236. He then went to Brainerd for the Quaker State Championships. It featured a six-car show with all cars making two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Carl Swanson's 6.25/233 beat Meyer's 6.49/210.77 in his first race, but in the second race, Billy also ran 6.25 at 225 to earn a spot in the final. So once again, he faced Swanson, and the results were the same. Carl won with a 6.32/229 over Meyer's close 6.35/221.67. Indy was the next stop for Meyer for the NHRA US Nationals, and he was not happy when he failed to qualify. He had a chance to be the IHRA FC champion as he and Beadle were fighting it out for that title, but Meyer chose to stay in Texas and not compete at the IHRA U.S. Open Championships held at Bristol. He did go to Fremont for the NHRA Golden Gate Nationals, where his 6.09/231.36 qualified #10.But an off-pace 6.31/187.50 in the first round, lost to Tom Riding's 6.02/234. The season ended badly at OCIR for the NHRA World Finals. During qualifying, he had a valve cover leak that caused oil to hit the headers, and the resulting fire burned the body off the car. His time on the pass was 6.26/177.51. The "bump" for the show was 6.20. He was back at OCIR in the first week of November for its Manufacturer's Meet. He reached the final by setting Low ET and Top Speed in his second race at 5.98/246.57. He went up against Springnationals winner Craig Epperly in the final, and Meyer had his parachute fall out, and Craig got the victory. He still finished ninth in NHRA's FC points. Billy's best NHRA speed was 243.24 at the Winternationals. We previously listed 250.00. Did that occur at an IHRA event, or was that a mistake? |

Notes: Meyer started the '82 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.97/241.28. In the first round, his tire-smoking 6.38/240.64 beat Dennis Geisler. In the second round, he was upset as Doc Halladay's 6.10/234 beat his 6.18/238.72. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 6.13/239.99 qualified #12. He beat Mike Dunn's 6.31/232 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.29/237.46. But in round two, he lost to John Force. In April, he was at OCIR's 64-car show, where he reached the final only to have his 6.11 finish runner-up to Don Prudhomme's 6.00. The next NHRA event was the Southern Nationals in Atlanta. Meyer qualified #1 for the tough eight-car field with a 5.89/249.30 (Top Speed). In the opening round, he slowed to 6.22/207.85 and lost to Paul Smith's 6.05/241 in the "Entertainer." He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #3 in the eight-car show with a 6.02 and lasted until the semifinals when he shut off due to tire shake and lost to John Pott in Larry Coogle's "Sting." Shortly after that, he was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, where he got another runner-up finish. His 6.38/247.23 (Top Speed) finished second best to Raymond Beadle's 6.35/233 in the "Blue Max." His next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. This was another eight-car field, and his 6.00/242.58 qualified #3. In the first round, Meyer's 6.09/244 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.21/235. But he smoked the tires in the semi-final and shut off against Prudhomme. He was also running really well at Columbus in mid-June for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 5.96/246.57 qualified second behind Prudhomme's 5.92/248. Meyer beat Smith in round one before losing to eventual winner Frank Hawley, who was driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in round two. The following week (June 20), he was at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. He really found some horsepower as his 5.92/254.23 (Top Speed and a new track record) qualified second to Beadle's 5.88. He also ran 253.52 on an earlier qualifying pass. Although Meyer lost to Tom Anderson in the first round, his speed was tops for the meet, even better than the TF dragsters! He didn't run as well as he hoped to at the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.08/240.64 qualified #6 in the eight-car show. In the first round, his 6.23/223.88 fell to Hawley's 6.10/224. The car continued to make power at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Billy qualified #1 and once again set Top Speed of the meet over TF cars as well with a 254.23. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to John Pott. Doing it at the IHRA events was one thing, but when he got to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals and did it again, well, that was another thing. He reset both ends of the NHRA record with backed-up 5.829/254.95 marks during qualifying. Once again, he had Top Speed of the meet as Mark Oswald had Top Speed for the TF cars with a 254.23. Billy then ran 5.89/250.69 in the first round over Hawley. But that dreaded tire smoke did him in for round two, where he dialed in too much power and lost to Mike Dunn in the "Hawaiian." Meyer was in Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals at the end of July. He set Low ET and Top Speed during qualifying at 6.12/240.00 (Top Speed over TF cars as well). His time would have qualified #5 for TF. He then defeated Rob Williams' 6.47 with a 6.14/236.22, and a 6.19/223.88 took out Kenny Bernstein's 6.17/233 in the semi-final. He faced the "Blue Max" in the final, and Beadle shut down to 6.85/149 while Meyer ran 6.16/235.60 for the victory. He almost followed that up with another win the week later (August 8) when he finished runner-up to Dale Pulde at Bristol for the IHRA Summernationals. Shortly after that, he was back at OCIR for its Summer Showdown event. Billy showed up with his new EXP and ran 6.07/217.38 on his first qualifying pass. On his second attempt, the car broke a rear end. He then unloaded his Firebird and used it in the race. In round one, his 5.92/251.39 (Top Speed) beat Jim Dunn's 6.29/231. Dunn's run qualified him for the semi-final as ten cars had run the first round, with the four lowest ETs advancing to the final four. So, once again, the two raced with the same results. This time, Meyer ran 5.98/249.30 over Jim's 6.24/213. He faced the Low ET car of John Lombardo in the final, and both had horrible runs, but Meyer's troubled 8.21/107 got the win over John's 10.17. He was nowhere near as fast as the TF dragsters at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals. Meyer continued to run his Firebird here as he would in all the remaining NHRA events. He qualified #4 for the eight-car show with a 5.98/250.00 (Top Speed), but at this event, Oswald reset the NHRA top fuel speed record to 256.41. Meyer's opponent, Anderson, fouled in the first round, so he advanced with a 6.18/218.96. In the semi-final, his 6.08/247.93 lost to eventual winner Hawley's 5.97/238. Billy became the second funny car over 250 on July 17, 1982, with a 250.69 at the NHRA Summernationals (second entry in the Crane Cams 250 mph Club for Funny Car). His 254.95 was the highest speed of the year except for Oswald's top fuel car, which went 256 and 255 (twice). | In May, at an OCIR open 8-car MD benefit event, Billy Meyer won FC, Johnny Abbott TF. That '97 at Pomona was off and on the throttle, tire shake. Bill Flournoy from '81 was still the CC at the beginning of the year. An NOS ad in May '82, prior to his OCIR/Muscular Dystrophy win, said he'd been 252 in Ohio. Salem? A check-out run at the MD event: 6.11/246. Meyer used a Larry Minor TF motor, a Crower box, and the whole nine at the 64-FC OCIR events. In week two, they removed the scoop for visibility. Absent week two: Burgin, Iverson, whose Camaro broke something expensive-sounding on the dry hop at the first one. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Meyer started the '83 season by qualifying #11 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.281/231.95. He smoked the tires in the first round and shut off to an 11.52 that lost to Gary Burgin's 5.94. A week before Gainesville, he was in Atlanta for an eight-car show. The traction was horrible, and it only took a 7.48 to qualify. Still, guys like Raymond Beadle and Kenny Bernstein failed to better that mark and qualify! Meyer's 6.42 got him the #4 spot in the field. Unfortunately, he fouled against Rick Johnson in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, he qualified #15 with a 6.05/225.00, but once again, he went out early. In the first round, his 6.22/184.04 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.87/247 in the "Hawaiian." Meyer qualified on the "bump spot" for the eight-car show at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. A 6.56/220 just made the field, but he lost to Beadle in the "Blue Max" in the first round. Early in April, OCIR held its first of two 64-car shows. All 22 Fuel FCs were to make two runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Meyer made the final by making runs of 5.97/218.44 over Dale Pulde and 5.86/228.42 over John Force. His final-round opponent was Tripp Shumake, who had reached the final with 5.93 and 5.74 runs, so he had his work cut out. Billy overpowered the track in the final and went up in smoke. He shut off to 11.52 while Shumake ran 6.37 for the win. The following week (April 9), OCIR held another 64-car show run in the same format. Once again, Meyer reached the final, but things didn't look too promising in the first round, where his 6.19/222.77 lost to Jim Dunn's 6.17/240. He stepped up to 5.98/230.76 in his second race over Prudhomme, who had shut off on the line. This time, he would face Force in the final, who had gotten there with a 5.91. Billy ran 6.06/233.16 to get the victory over Force. He was back in Atlanta on April 17 for the NHRA Southern Nationals, where he failed to qualify for the eight-car field with a 6.03/240.64 (first alternate) best. The following week, he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Rain postponed the race until May 1. He qualified #6 (another eight-car show) with a 6.11 but failed to make the finals. Meyer must have been wondering what was going on by this time, as he had run so well in '82. But NHRA had made a rule change for '83, outlawing the use of Nitrous Oxide. Billy had been using it in '82. The NHRA Cajun National was run at Baton Rouge near the end of May, and Billy's 6.04/228.42 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Mark Oswald, who was driving for "Candies and Hughes." Meyer smoked the tires and shut down to 10.08/77.38 while Oswald advanced at 6.21/229. Shortly after that (June 5), he was in Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Only Oswald had outdone him in qualifying, but Meyer lost to Prudhomme in the first round. The following week, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where he ran 6.00/230.17 to qualify #7. But as was the case for most of the year, he had problems in the first round and slowed to 9.12/83.79 and lost to Burgin's 6.27/235. He then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.16 best failed to qualify for the tough eight-car show. Billy's best times came at the World Finals at OCIR, where he qualified #2 at 5.752/246.57. | Billy Meyer downed Raymond Beadle in the final at the Golden Gate Nationals, 5.75 to 5.78, in what was then the quickest side-by-side Funny Car race of all time. Meyer finished second to Frank Hawley in the 1982 points battle but had slumped badly in 1983, winning just one round of competition heading into the Baylands event. Meyer was not even ranked in the top 10, but after qualifying sixth with a 5.90, his Chief Auto Parts, 7-Eleven Pontiac came to life with a 5.84 in the semis and a 5.75 in the final against low qualifier Beadle. - NHRA | At the '83 Finals, monster-sounding, wheel-lifting, dry hops off the starting line (r/h lane)in round 1. OCIR was one of the tracks where both fences were equidistant to the track, the spectator side just as close a view as the tower side. Tower side was a SIR habit I brought. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Billy had a strong year in '84. He won three races in NHRA and another three in IHRA and finished second to Mark Oswald in the NHRA Funny Car points chase. He also ended the season with the second quickest Funny Car time ever, a 5.628 at the IHRA Fallnationals at Bristol. In January, Billy started the season by qualifying for the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway with a 5.96/225.00. He beat John Martin in the first round with a 6.02/200.89, but he broke an oil line and advanced Tom McEwen in the semifinals. As good as he ran in NHRA, he started the year by failing to qualify at Pomona for the Winternationals, where he was the second alternate at 6.07/234.98. A new Plueger-built Mustang debuted in March, and it qualified #3 at Atlanta's eight-car field on March 11 with a 5.94/232.55. His 5.93/228.42 advanced when Al Hofmann broke in the opening round. In the semifinal, he and Kenny Bernstein had a great race that saw Meyer's 5.81 (Low ET) at 248.61 defeat Bernstein's 5.87/252. He faced Gary Southern in Bill Dunlap's Tempo in the final, and Gary went up in smoke while Meyer ran 6.02/223.88 for the victory. He qualified #11 at the NHRA Gatornationals with a 5.93/243.90. A first-round 5.85 beat Frank Hawley's 5.91 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." In round two, a 6.17/226.70 got around Al Segrini, but in the semifinals, both he and John Collins smoked the tires, and John's 6.45/216 beat Meyer's 6.44/239. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, a 5.90 qualified #4. His 5.92/221.81 beat Ron Correnti in the opening round, while a 6.14 advanced in round two. In the semifinals, his 5.88 lost to McEwen's 5.89. Then things began to click, starting with the NHRA Southern Nationals. He won four straight races (two NHRA and two IHRA) and averaged 5.83 for 19 runs in those events. At Atlanta for the Southern Nationals, he qualified #2 with a 5.78/249.30 and went on to win over Kenny Bernstein in the final with a track record 5.73/252.80 over Bernstein's 5.80/254. He then went to Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, where he qualified #1 with a 5.73 (Low ET) and beat Oswald in the final for the $31,000 purse. The next win came at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In the first round, Billy qualified #8 in the eight-car show but beat a tire-smoking Bernstein with a 5.94/250. In the semifinals, he soloed to a track record 5.81/246 when Dale Pulde could not appear. He took his third win in the final with a 5.92/249.30 over Jim Head's 6.01/245. The crown jewel of this four-race winning stretch came next, the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol on June 3. He beat low qualifier, Don Prudhomme, in the first round and then Sherm Gunn in round two with a 5.86/236.84. And in the semifinals, a 5.81/243.24 beat Denny Savage. In the final, he faced Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird and won with a 5.776/252.10 over Mark's 5.97/251. The win was worth a record $41,500. In comparison, the two NHRA wins were worth slightly over $10,000 each. His good run ended the following week (June 10) at the NHRA Springnationals. Although he qualified #1 with a track record 5.81 at 249.30, he lost in the first round, with an off-pace of 6.27/207.31 that lost to John Force's 6.06/242. He made another $10,000 at the next NHRA event, the Grandnationals in Canada, where he qualified #2 with a 5.84/250.69 and beat Ed McCulloch in the final with a 5.85/247.25. At the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 8, he ran horribly; his 6.49/157 qualified last in the sixteen-car field, and a tire-smoking shut-off 10.09/71 lost to McEwen's 5.88/245 in the opening round. A week later, he did make the finals at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.88 qualified #12, and he burned several bearings on his 5.85/240 in the first round that beat McCulloch's quicker 5.82/252. The team installed a new engine for round two, where his 5.88 beat Mike Dunn's 6.15. In the semifinal, his 5.79 took out Hawley's 5.85. In the final, he met Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max," and his 5.97/248.61 lost to Beadle's 5.95/247. He lost early at Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals, and the week after that, he was at Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Meyer qualified #1 and lasted until the second round before losing to Oswald. Billy ran a confirmed 254.95 at the NHRA World Finals. We assume the 255.68 is an IHRA time. It seems legit, but we need confirmation. Photo from Indy 1984. |

Notes: The car had that wild "shovel" nose on it, also ran it in '86. This car is the one Billy used 3 spark plugs per cylinder on until outlawed by NHRA. Photo from Milan, MI, 1985. At the Super Bowl of Drag Racing at Firebird Raceway in January, Meyer had his supercharger explode on a 5.84/218.44 qualifier. The brand-new Mustang body was blown to pieces, and he received slight burns to his forehead. He was done for the day. Billy started the '85 NHRA season by qualifying #15 at Pomona for the Winternationals with final attempt, 6.03/239.36. Billy lost to Dale Pulde in the first round. He destroyed another Mustang body at Atlanta on March 10. He was there for an eight-car show where he qualified #8 with a 6.42/223.88. In the first round, he beat a tire-smoking Pulde with a 5.82/240.00, but in the lights, the blower exploded and took the Mustang body with it. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, Billy lasted until round two where Ed McCulloch's 5.91/254 beat his 5.97/243. A best of 5.93/229.00 failed to qualify at the Gatornationals, but he rebounded with a runner-up finish at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. In the semifinal, he stopped Kenny Bernstein's 5.95/243 with a 5.88/250. In the final, he faced Pulde, and they both ran 5.80 (Billy at Top Speed of the meet, 261.62), but Dale got the win. His next stop was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he qualified #8 with a 5.93/208.04. A 5.99/250.00 beat Tom Hoover's 6.12/224. In round two, he got out of shape and shut off in a loss to John Lombardo's 5.91/246 in the "Blue Max.” Meyer lost early at the next NHRA race as well, the Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge. He qualified #3 with a 5.84/247.38, but in the first round, he crossed the centerline while racing Ron Correnti. Things weren't much better at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals where he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. Billy made another final round appearance at the NHRA Springnationals in June. He qualified #6 with a 5.83/236.22 and beat Jim Head in the first round, with a 5.89/231.60. A second-round 5.81/242.06 beat a tire-smoking John Force and in the semifinals, a 5.82/241.54 beat John Collins' 5.94/244. In the final, Bernstein's 5.81/251 beat Meyer tire-smoking run. Only 15 cars showed up for the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada, but Billy still ran hard in qualifying running a 5.704/256.70 for the #2 spot. He smoked the tires hard in the first round, with a 6.05/254.09, but still beat Head, who blew an engine. He lost to eventual winner Rick Johnson driving the "Hawaiian" in round two. He was at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals where he lasted until the semifinals. After that, he made the trip to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.80, but he lost to Tim Grose in the opening round. It was then off to Denver for the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Meyer's 5.96 at only 205.94 qualified #7. He beat Cal Jackson in the first round, with a 6.59/153.73 before losing to John Force's 5.95/243 with a 5.99/222.77 in the next round. He then went to Edgewater for the IHRA Summernationals. Billy qualified #4 and ran 5.806/250.00 and 5.889/245.23 to reach the semifinals where he lost to Pulde. |

Notes: Confirmed 262.08 at Ennis at first nitro match race at the track (before the national event) August 1986. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Billy started the '86 season by qualifying #6 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.75/241.28. He was a little late out of the gate in the first round, as his 5.85/242.58 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.91/241 in Joe Pisano's Daytona. He attended an eight-car show at Atlanta where he qualified #3 with a 6.20/210.28. He shut off against Mark Oswald in the "Candies and Hughes" Firebird in the first round. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Meyer qualified #3 with a 5.76/251.11. He beat Jim Head in the first round, before smoking the tires and losing to Tom McEwen in round two. Firebird raceway hosted the Coor's Funny Car race in April and Billy had tire-smoking problems on both his runs; he lost to John Force and Johnny West with times of 12.62 and 6.38/205.01. We needless to say, he failed to make it to the finals. On April 20 he was at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals where he ran 5.75/252.10 to qualify #3. He beat Tom Hoover before smoking the tires to a 6.12/244.16 loss to Ed McCulloch who also had traction problems at 6.02/242. In May, he was at Famoso for the Bakersfield Meet. He ran 5.84/252.80 to qualify #3 in the eight-car field. He stepped up to a 5.77/250 in the first round, to beat Rodney Flournoy's 6.46 Firebird, but in round two, a 5.78/253.52 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.76/245. At Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals, a 5.75/256.99 qualified #4. In round one, he beat Paul Smith's 5.99/230 with a 5.76/253.66. A second round 5.89/241.80 advanced when Head got out of shape and crossed the centerline. In the semifinals, a 5.86/245.40 beat Johnny West's 5.94/244 in the "Hawaiian." That put him in the final against McEwen. Unfortunately, he smoked the tires and lost with an 8.37/94.59 while the "Goose" took the victory with a 5.78/249. Meyer qualified #5 with a 5.83/242.65 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but he lost early. At the end of June, he was up north in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.84/240.64 qualified #5 for the show. In the first round, Billy's ailing 9.22/91.53 advanced when Bruce Larson smoked the tires and shut off. In the second round, he fouled away a 5.81 and lost to Kenny Bernstein's 5.67. At Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, Billy qualified #4 with a 5.66/255.82. He beat Head in the first round, but in the second round the Mustang broke on the line giving Hoover a free ride into the semifinals. He lost early at the NHRA Mile High Nationals as well, after qualifying #6 with a 5.91/191.53. Meyer qualified in the dreaded #9 spot with a 5.88/245.23. It was dreaded because if you qualified in that spot, you faced the number one qualifier in your first race. That's exactly what Billy did, but he lucked out when low qualifier Bernstein fouled away a 5.81 while Meyer motored into the second round with a 6.12/180.00. In the second round, he ran a 5.96/238.09 that lost to Hoover's 5.91/256. |

Notes: Glenn qualified #1 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.33. He made his way into the final by having a first-round tire smoking battle with Wyatt Radke that he won with a 7.89/220.53 to Wyatt's 8.07/106. In the second round, another 5.33 at 279.24 beat Richard Hartman's 5.50/272 and in the semifinals, he set Low ET and Top Speed with a 5.289/284.00 that beat Mike Dunn's 5.39/266. In the finals he ran John Force and Glenn had problems and slowed to a 5.87/182.70 that finished runner-up to Force's 5.31/239. Glenn lost to Mike Dunn in the second round at the NHRA Arizona Nationals where his 5.35/280 lost to Mike's 5.36/274. At Houston for the NHRA Supernationals, a 5.30 qualified #5, but he again lost in round two. This time his 5.35/285.26 lost to Force's 5.27/275. Earlier, Mikres had set Top Speed of the meet at 286.25. The team didn't qualify as well at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals only getting the #12 spot in the field, but Glenn beat Jerry Caminito's 5.85/197 in the first round, with a 5.42/261.62. A second round 5.49/266.82 lost to Mike Dunn's 5.34/264. Best NHRA times were the 5.289/286.25. |

Notes: Glenn qualified the Cavalieri Racing car #12 at Brainerd at 5.391/275.81. He lost in round one to Del Worsham, 5.023/302.72 to 9.319/76.81. Glenn was the fourth alternate at NHRA Indy at 5.424/270.27. He ran 5.18 at Memphis and quicker in the remainder of the season, but we think those runs were in Paul Gratton's car. We need to confirm that.rnrnPhoto from 1998 US Nationals. |

Notes: Glenn drove this car and the Cavalieri car in 1998 (plus a funny car and top fueler down in Australia). We think that this car came out in Memphis after Glenn drove the Cavalieri car at Brainerd and Indy. He qualified #12 at Memphis at 5.184/266.06 and lost a close one to Whit Bazemore in round one, 5.018/297.94 to 5.097/290.26. Glenn qualified #15 at Ennis at 5.128/295.27 and lost to Cruz Pedregon in round one, 4.944/315.01 to 5.094/289.76. He qualified #11 at the Matco Supernationals at 5.121/298.30. A season-best 5.044/301.70 beat Chuck Etchells' 8-second shutoff in round one. In round two, Whit Bazemore's 5.031/306.53 ended Glenn's subpar 8.106/105.33. |

Notes: Glenn ran 5.508/269.89 to qualify on the bump at the Winters but lost the first round with a shutoff. And he was a 7.79/110 DNQ at Phoenix. He drove three cars this year. We are listing all those times with the Impulse machine until we get confirmation. |
