Notes: Great looking red, white, and blue car. - Danny White | Featured on the cover of the 2/72 Drag Times after its debut at Englishtown, NJ. - RT | Sam Miller entered the Funny Car wars in '71 by buying Don Prudhomme's old 'Cuda from '70. He graduated to a Duster that he scored a win with at the NHRA Grandnationals in '71. Unfortunately, a few weeks after his win, the car suffered a blower failure at Epping, New Hampshire, which blew the body off. For the '72 season, Sam had John Buttera build him this 114" Mustang-bodied car. The body came from Fiberglass Ltd., and S&W handled the tinwork. The engine was a Fred Forkner-built 426 Hemi. It used a stock crank that was balanced and clearanced. M/T rods were used as well as 6.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons. Isky was the choice for the cam. Keith Black prepared the GMC 6/71, and it sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar was also responsible for the blower drive. Going against the grain, Sam used a Crower injection unit to feed the engine the 90% nitro. The power was transmitted back to a 5.14 Ford rear end by a Lenco two-speed. Best times reported by September '72 Rodder and Super Stock magazine were 6.63/219. Sam began his NHRA national event season with a 6.850/212.39 to qualify #10 at Gainesville. He lost to Jake Johnston in round one, 6.69/220.04 to 6.88/205.47. Sam qualified #15 at Englishtown at 6.887/209.77, and got revenge on Johnston in round one, 7.33/186.33 to 9.24/112.50. He repeated his 7.33 but at 175.09 to fall to Larry Fullerton's 6.56/225.00 in round two. Sam was back at Sanair for the NHRA Grandnationals, where his 6.860 qualified #8 by virtue of being the defending champion! Jake Johnston's 6.77 was quicker, but he had to settle for first alternate! An off-pace 7.66/151.51 in the opening round lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher's 6.75/206.89. Sam was the fifth alternate at Indy at 6.80/182.18. | Sam ran a confirmed 6.68 at Epping 72. |

Notes: Sam Miller was on board as the car burned to the ground. - per the 70’s Funny Cars website with info provided by Don Roberts (https://www.70sfunnycars.com/FunnyCars6.html), Miller drove Gordon’s Charger in 1974, and that was the car that burned, not the Cuda. Did Miller drive the Cuda? Also, the Cuda was originally called the “King Cuda,” then “Bostonian,” and the supercharger was replaced with injectors when the name was changed. Later Charger was supercharged. JM |

Notes: In June, Sam was driving Frank Federici's "Shark" at New England for its Spring Funny Car Championships. In the first round, he bounced it off the guardrail in his race against Pat Foster. Pat was having his own problems. Although he drove the Barry Setzer Vega to the win with a 7.78/135, he had blown the engine and was done for the day. The "break rule" was in effect, and Sam got back into the show for round two. There, his 7.45/145 beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini at 7.57/218. His run ended in the semifinal, where he lost to Bobby Rowe, driving one of Don Schumacher's Cudas. |

Notes: Mineo built his own chassis for the car. Fiberglass Trends provided the body. On April 19, Mineo was at Lions for an eight-car show. A 7.76 qualified #7, and he improved to 7.75/187.11 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get past Randy Walls' 7.66/179. He raced at an eight-car show at Lions on May 10, running an 8.25 in qualifying. He stepped it up to a 7.94 over Johnny Wright in the first round. But he lost in the semis. He qualified #11 with an 8.02 at the Funny Car 500 at OCIR on May 31, but a first-round 8.01/179.28 lost to Wright's 7.58/196. At the OCIR Benefit race on June 14, he qualified second and singled in the first round. Unfortunately, he fouled again at 8.02/180.72 in the semifinal against Wright. At the second annual Nitro Championships at OCIR on July 5, Gordon qualified #13, but he lost to Clyde Morgan's 7.73/188 Javelin in the first round. Mineo's 8.36 qualified #14 at OCIR on July 19 for the PDA Championships. In the opening round, his 8.46 beat Clyde Morgan's 10.90. In round two, his 8.56 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.61. At the Irwindale Funny Car Open on July 26, Gas Ronda's first-round 7.50/197 (Top Speed) dropped his 8.46/186.42. On August 2, Mineo won over an eight-car show at Lions. He beat Bob Smith in Tom Sturm's Corvair in the final. The following week, on August 9, he ran at OCIR's Anniversary race, but he fouled against Gary Gabelich in the first round. Gabelich seemed to have Mineo's number as the following week (August 16), he again met and beat Mineo in the first round, a 7.65/198 (Top Speed) beat Gordon's 8.05/181.44. Mineo had some problems on October 4 while qualifying for an eight-car show at Lions. He had a blower belt break while at speed, and it tore the windshield off. The wind entering the body then tore the roof off the Firebird. He raced it in the first round, topless, but Mike Van Sant's 7.24/199 beat Mineo's 7.85/161 pass while crossing the centerline. Can someone provide a little more info on this brief collaboration? |

Notes: Gordon Mineo started the year by running at the Irwindale New Years' Race. He had failed to qualify for the sixteen car field but got into the show for John Mazmanian's broken 'Cuda. He singled in the first round when Warren Gunter's VW broke. In the second round, he lost to Clyde Morgan's Javelin (7.88/178.21) when he had handling problems. He attempted to qualify at the second OCIR All-Pro race at OCIR on January 18, but he failed to make the eight-car field. At the AHRA Winternationals, both he and Tom McEwen ran 8.40 in round one, but Tom won. On February 15 at an eight-car show at Irwindale, he qualified fourth with a 7.74 and ran a first-round 7.97/184.04 over Marv Eldridge (8.07/182.18), but Danny Ongais at 7.52/195.94 in the MT Mustang beat his off pace 9.40-87.87 in the semis. At a match against Paula Murphy in April at Cecil County, Mineo ran 7.89, 7.77, and 7.60 to win all three races. Paula had transmission problems and couldn't get out of the 13-second range. On May 31 in Connecticut, Mineo ran a first-round 8.11/173.74 but lost with an 8.01/157.34 to Jim Liberman's 7.55/188.67 in the second round. On July 25 at the Sunset Drag Strip's sixth annual Funny Car Nationals, he ran a first-round 5.43 on the eighth-mile track over Al Hanna's Charger. A second-round 5.30 beat Paula Murphy (5.60), but Kelly Chadwick's 5.05 beat Mineo in the semifinal. - Ron Howard |

Notes: Gordon Mineo had just gotten his car out of the paint booth the morning of March 20. It just so happened that Lions held an eight-car show on the same day. So off he went. He beat Mike Van Sant in Mickey Thompson's Mustang in the first round, with a 7.16/207.85. Unfortunately, just past the finish line the car got airborne and the Firebird body flew off. The body was completely destroyed, but Mineo and the rest of the chassis was OK. |

Notes: "Flash Gordon" Mineo had Mike Kase build him a new Vega for the '73 season. It used a 117" wheelbase chassis and cost Mineo approximately $15,000 to build. Gordon built his own engines, and the 490-incher that powered this car used a National Crane Service Crank along with M/T rods and Forgedtrue pistons. Howards supplied the cam. A Weiand Manifold supported the Byron Blair-built blower, and an Enderle injection unit flowed the 90% nitro mix. HP was estimated at 1,800. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power back to a Detroit Locker rear carrying 4.30 gears. Mineo was at St. Paul, Minnesota, for a best-of-three-match race against Doc Halladay, driving Bill Schifsky's Pinto in May. Gordon's 6.93/207.85 beat Doc's 7.00/189 in their first race, and a 6.90/211.76 beat the Pinto's quicker 6.77/209 in the second. Mineo made it three for three in the final race when Halladay had a fuel pump break in their final race, and Gordon ran a solo 7.26/179.35 for the match race win. He was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All fourteen cars ran the first round, with the eight Low ET cars advancing. Mineo's time failed to advance. Shortly after, he was at Edgewater for its FC Manufacturer's Championships. In the first round, his 6.81/206.42 beat Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car. In the second round, he lost a header in the lights while running 6.82 in a loss to Tom Hoover's 6.70. He also ran 6.60 at Gary 1973. Notes: Everyone was talking about the great ETs at Lebanon (Mineo had run in the 6.20s with the Coke Circuit that year - unheard of numbers for him). - David Hapgood | Mineo qualified eighth with a 6.44 at the AHRA Winternationals and won his first-round race over John Lombardo with a 6.52/197.36. Billy Meyer's 6.72/195 beat his second round 6.83/188.28. Gordon attempted to qualify at NHRA Pomona but did not make the show (times not available). That was his only NHRA national event this year. | We need to confirm the year of the photo. I am pretty sure I saw the car with the 1972 nose as late as 1975. - BP |

Notes: Gordon qualified #11 with a 6.557/204.68 at the NHRA Gatornationals, but he did not show against Gary Burgin in the first round. Amazingly, he qualified identically at NHRA Columbus, where another 6.557 (at 202.70) claimed the #11 spot. Again, Gordon did not run in the first round, and Bob Pickett took his spot against #3 qualifier Gordie Bonin. Those were Gordon's two national event appearances in 1975. Shortly after the Springnationals, he was at Englishtown for a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. His 7.07/196.07 beat Paul Radici's 7.54/162 in the opening round, but his ET did not advance him into the semifinal. In July, Mineo was at Atco for another Coke race. His first-round 7.06/198 fell to Gary Bolger's 6.74/197, but his ET was good enough to advance him to the final four. Unfortunately, his car broke, so Fred Goeske took his place in the semifinal. Gordon ran really well at Portland for the 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. All cars were to make three runs, with the two Low ET cars meeting in the final. Mineo won all three of his races. First running 6.74 to beat Larry Van Zandt, then 6.71 over Al Bergler, and finally, a 6.74 over Goeske. His ET's were not strong enough to advance to the final, but it was a strong showing. He was in Seattle in August for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. Once again, the cars were to make three runs, with the two Low ET cars advancing to the final. Mineo opened eliminations with a 6.61/193.65 that beat Dick Bourgeois' off-pace 8.17/195. In his second race, he stopped Goeske with a 6.68/188.47. On his third run, his 6.84 lost to Lindamood's 6.71. His next appearance was at Fremont for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. He had some bad luck there as his Vega broke against Russell Long in the first round. I saw Gordon win the Coke Cavalcade race at Thompson, Ohio, over Russell Long in the Sundance Monza. Pretty sure it was 1975, but he still had the 72 Vega nose on the car. - BP |

Notes: Goeske still ran the car as a nitro funny car in 1977. Converted to a rocket car in late 1977 or 1978. |

Notes: Gordon ran 6.69/212/26 at the PRO event at Beeline on January 14. He ran 6.31 at Phoenix. Mineo was at Houston on May 15 for the NHRA Division 4 race. He soloed in the first round, with a 6.69 when his competition broke. In the semifinal, his 6.58/204 defeated Johnny White. In the final, he faced low qualifier Dale Emery, and Gordon's 6.60 finished runner-up to Dale's 6.49. Mineo qualified on the "bump" at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.390/226.13. He went into hard tire shake in the first round, and shut off to a 6.65/177.86 in a losing effort to the eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.25/212. Mineo was at Baton Rouge in August for the NHRA Division 4 race. His 6.92/209 in the opening round beat Billy Meyer who was driving Johnny White's car at this event. As only six cars showed, he got the "odd-lot" solo in the semifinal. He faced Pete Miner in the final, and Gordon's 7.05/180.36 finished runner-up to Miner's 6.96/202. Columbus was Gordon's only NHRA national event of the year. |
