Notes: Former "Chi-Town Hustler" 77/78 ride. Motry was one of five FC drivers that showed up at Indianapolis in April for the NHRA Division 3 opener. His 7.36/196.93 qualified #4, and in round one, the car broke against Murf McKinney. Tom was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 6.32/227.84. That was the last pass the car would make as his parachute failed, and he went off the end of the track and rolled the car. He was OK, but the car was not. |

Notes: Motry ran the Byron Dragway Coors Manufacturers Funny Car Showdown in the Unlimited Funny Car race with Nitro Alcohol & Jet Funny Cars, where he faced Al Hanna's Eastern Raider Jet in round 1 & Motry's was violently out of shape & his 8.76/110.76 was no match for Hanna's 6.93/225.00. Motry would run Fill Smith's Flashback Jet FC in his final run, where Motry "improved" with a 7.14/195.65 the hard way when he was again out of shape & killed the engine while Smith blasted away with a 6.58/240.64. Notes: After Shirley destroyed her Buttera built '72 Mustang at Dragway 42 during the second round of eliminations at the IHRA Summernationals (August 11/13), she borrowed Don Schumacher's 1970 Indy winning Buttera built Barracuda. She had the Cuda repainted and lettered and tried unsuccessfully to qualify for the field at Indy (L&M photo from IRP). At the 1972 IHRA Nationals (DIMS October 13/15), she qualified ninth (6.70/207) and lost to low qualifier Don Schumacher in the first round. |

Notes: The car was destroyed at IHRA Dragway 42 on August 20, 1972, putting Muldowney in the hospital with burns. The incident was not depicted accurately in the movie Heart Like A Wheel. Shirley ran 6.70 in Connecticut, 6.82/205.90 at Epping, NH. Muldowney failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. She was not alone as many good cars failed to make the field, including Richard Tharp, Larry Fullerton, the "Ramchargers," and "Pisano and Mastsubara."On February 26, she had one of six cars competing in Orlando. Muldowney did well, finishing runner-up to Mart Higginbotham. On March 12, Shirley lost a best-of-three match race to Gary Bolger at Edgewater. Her 7.0's-207 lost to the "Golddigger's" 6.9's-210. The following week (March 19), she failed to qualify at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, where almost 40 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field. Shortly after that, she was back at Edgewater for a best-of-three match race against Frank Huff, driving the "Super Vega."Shirley won all three of their races, running a best of 6.94/200.44. Unfortunately, at her next match race, held at Kilkare Dragway on March 25, she lost all three of her races against Larry Arnold, driving the "Kingfish."On April 30, her 6.8's at 210 beat Dick Bourgeois in the "Doug's Headers" Vega two straight. In May, Muldowney was one of four FC's that competed at Tri-City. In her first race, she ran 6.90/208 to beat Connie Kalitta's 7.23/172. An off-pace 8.55 lost to Jim Paoli's 6.76 in her second race, and the car died on the line in her last race, giving Butch Maas a single. A Monday night show was run at Toronto on May 22, and she was runner-up to Ed McCulloch. Shirley ran well on May 26 at Union Grove's Drag Racing Olympics. She ran 6.76 twice, with a best speed of 213, to reach the final against Bobby Rowe. There was no stopping Rowe this day as he won with an easy 6.68/193. She was back at Union Grove the next day, where she lasted until the semifinals before her 6.72/202 lost to eventual winner Al Marshall's 6.66/210. She was at Milan Dragway in June for the NHRA Division 3 race. In the opening round, her 7.35 beat Ed O'Brien, but in the semifinals, a 6.87/205 lost to Maas' 6.80/208. Shirley was at Atco on July 12 for its Funny Car Championships. Although she had lost to Leroy Chadderton in the first round, she came back out for a consolation race against Charlie Therwhanger. She won their race with a 6.93/225.00. It was a career-best speed for her (up to this point). She was back in Toronto on August 6 for a fourteen-car show. This time, Muldowney won, stopping Don Schumacher and Arnold along the way. |
