Notes: Muldowney had her new Satellite at OCIR in January for some shake-down runs. She never got in a good run as the car suffered from bad tire vibration. She had also attempted to qualify the car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, but the track was so bad that everyone was lost on getting the right set-up there. She was one of many that failed to make the field. Muldowney made history on June 10 at the NHRA Springnationals, when her first-round 6.841/209.79 beat Jim Murphy. It was her first funny car round win in NHRA competition. Shirley qualified #14 at 6.901/198.23, and she lost to Dave Beebe in round two, 6.89/215 to 7.67/146. She went to Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where she failed to qualify her funny car (first alternate - no times, but slower than 6.649) and Pancho Rendon's top fuel car (third alternate). | Shirley was one of many alternates at Indy with a best of 6.71/199.55. That was her last NHRA national event. She also ran 6.70 in Dallas. |

Notes: Mulligan got AA/FC upgrade in this car at Lions in October 1968. Schwartz drove this car at the '69 NHRA Springnationals in Dallas and died when Pat Foster in Mickey Thompson's Mustang T-boned the Cougar. In 1968, it was reported that when Maynard Rupp left the Cougar Country car, Roy Steffey was joining with Schwartz and Pepper Meihart on the Cougar. Steffey was a big dollar guy and would have made a big impact. |

Notes: Murphy debuted his new Satellite at the Irwindale Grand Premiere race held on January 7. He qualified the car #15 in the sixteen-car field, but he got out of shape in the first round, and shut down to an 8.80 loss against Mike Van Sant, who advanced the "Stone, Woods and Cook" Mustang with a 6.60. He then took it to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he was one of the 58 cars attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car show. The track was horrible, but Murphy cracked off a 7.42/196.96 to qualify #4. An opening round 7.40 beat Roger Garten's 7.58 in the "War Horse," He improved to 7.35/176 in round two to beat Ed McCulloch's 7.82/136. But in the semifinals, despite running his best time of the weekend, his 7.28/210.28 lost to eventual winner Don Schumacher's 7.26/218. On March 18, Jim was at Fresno Dragway for its Winter Race of Champions. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.73 qualified #2 behind Dave Beebe's 6.47 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. These two would work their way into the final. Paula Murphy had trouble with her Duster in the opening round, and Murphy only needed a 7.47 to advance. In the semifinal, his 6.85/177 beat Gary Ormsby's 7.22/206. This set up the final between Beebe and Murphy. On this day, the "Mr. Ed" car was too strong for the "Holy Smokes" as Dave put down a 6.82/200 in the final to beat Jim's 7.11/212.26. The following week (March 24), he was at OCIR for the final All-Pro race. It was a sixteen-car field, and he qualified #9 with a 6.83. He lost to low qualifier Jim Dunn in the opening round. Sacramento hosted the California State Championships on April 15, and there was an Funny Car field, but there were only four cars there. Jim ran 6.89 in the first round, before setting Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.80/221.68 in the final to defeat Ormsby's broken Vega. Jim did not have a good outing at Irwindale for the big Coca-Cola Championships. It was a 32-car show, and in the first round, the car faltered, and he lost to Nick Harmon's 7.80. |

Notes: Jim started the year as the second alternate at Pomona with a 5.552/264.70. He qualified #15 at Houston Spring at 5.834/248.07 but shut off against Ed McCulloch in round one. Jim's next NHRA national event was the Mile Highs in Denver, where he qualified #13 at 5.938/238.22. Mike Dunn took the first-round win, however, 5.69/252 to 5.94/217. On July 30, he qualified #15 at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.662/241.81. He had problems in the first round, and shut off to 13.47 that lost to John Force. Jim was at Seattle in early August for the NHRA Seafair Nationals. He qualified #15 with a 5.568/265.01 and a 5.621/255.02 beat Ed McCulloch in the first round. He lost to Jim White driving the "Hawaiian," shutting off to a ten-second run in round two. Jim was the second alternate at Indy at 5.594/255.31 and the first alternate at the GTX Fall Nationals at 5.583/261.17. Jim had his best numbers and qualifying position at the Pomona World Finals. A 5.508/262.85 placed him #11 in the field. But Jim's decent 5.58/230 ran into John Force's 5.35/276 in round one, and Jim's nice NHRA national event run was done for the year. Notes: Photo from 1991 Nationals. | Jim qualified on the "bump" at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals with a 5.61/258.54. He lost to Mike Dunn in the opening round. NHRA held its Northwest Nationals at Seattle in early August. A 5.450/271.65 qualified Murphy in the #8 spot. In the first round, he ran a career best of 5.375 at 260.11, but he wasted it with a red light start, giving Whit Bazemore the win with a 5.45/263. He skipped running at Brainerd for the NHRA Northstar Nationals, but he was at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.51/271.08 was good for the first alternate. At the NHRA Keystone Nationals, he made the show with a 5.45/268.58 that got him the #15 spot. Another 5.45/264.08 in the first round, lost to John Force's 5.34/274. He qualified in the #15 spot again at the NHRA Heartland Nationals with a 5.48/269.94. He improved to a 5.39/270.88 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to beat Mark Oswald's 5.33/265. Jim ran 5.42/271.08 to qualify #13 at the NHRA Chief Nationals. In the first round his 5.56/221.89 lost to Force's 5.31/276. The NHRA season ended at Pomona for the World Finals. Murphy qualified #14 with a 5.451/274.89 and in the first round, he beat Chuck Etchells when both smoked the tires. Jim's 5.94/199.37 beat Chuck's 6.01/246. In round two, Force got to him again. John ran 5.409/275.98 to beat Murphy's 5.462/263.08. |

Notes: Murphy was at Lions on January 28 for AHRA's second half of its Winternationals. She qualified for the 32-car field with an 8.95. In the opening round of eliminations, her improved 8.74 lost to Marv Eldridge's 8.15. Paula was at Lions on March 30, where she made three runs. The first pass was an 8.99/143.34 that beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde in Charlie Wilson's car. Murphy lost to Al Vanderwoude's 9.07/141 in the next race when she shut off to a 9.13/146.81. Her best run was 8.89/123.79, but she lost to Bob Pickett's 8.73/165. Paula faced off against Frank Federici's "Shark" Corvette in a best of three match race at Connecticut on July 20. Unfortunately, she lost all three races and the match, running times of 8.34/173.41, 8.43/170.45, and 8.33/172.74 against Frank's 7.99/185, 8.11/182, and 8.24/155. Notes: Sold the Mustang to the Suffolk Dragway owner, who later sold it to Butch Kernodle. The Barracuda was built by Don Hardy in late 1968 for Larry Reyes. Larry ran it a few times prior to signing on to drive Roland Leong's Hawaiian. He sold the car to Paula. This photo is from Tulsa - I think there are some pictures somewhere on the Internet from the '68 OCIR manufacturer's meet with Larry's name still on the car. Same paint, just different lettering. | Paula debuted the 'Cuda on May 25 at Suffolk for a match race against Lee Jones. She won two out of three races to win the match with a best of 8.03/182.92. Paula raced at the New England Funny Car Championships at Epping on June 8, but she broke against Lew Arrington in the first round. Paula raced probably the hottest car on the match race circuit, Tommy Grove, on June 22 at Kingston for a best of three match and she won. She beat Grove 2 out of three to win the match. On July 4 Paula ran 194.36 at Union Grove and shortly after this she ran 197.36 at Martin, Mich. At the PHR Championships on August 2, Della Woods' 8.08/179 beat Paula's 8.11/188.67 in the first round. Paula took a big win at the New Jersey State Championships at Atco on August 10. The two women met again in the first round, but this time, they finished in reverse order with Murphy's 7.86/192 beating Della Woods' 8.50/174. A 7.95/195.65 beat Bruce Bohen's Buick at 8.59/160 in the semifinal. And in the final, a 7.74/190 beat a motor blowing Ken Poffenberger. On August 24 at Green Valley Raceway for the AHRA World Championships, Paula became the first woman drag racer to break 200 mph. She ran a 7.55/200.00 in time trials. She also made it into the semifinals there before blowing an engine and losing to Dick Harrell. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19, she lost to Mart Higginbotham in the first round. Another first-round loss came on October 25 at the Lions East/West meet when Johnny Wright's 7.33/198 defeated her 8.20/191.89. Paula ran well at the Sears Point North/South Championships on November 2, running as quick as 7.91/192.30 over Bob Velseka's Mustang. She failed to make the finals, however. On November 7, a 7.62 qualified her fourth on the Chrysler team for the OCIR Manufacturer's Meet. The 'Cuda was used early into the '70 season. |

Notes: Brand new car was an RCS chassis with Romeo Palamides modifications. The new Duster always ran a 426 Chrysler. Paula started the '71 season by competing at Fremont's New Year's Day Funny Car Championships. She won her first-round race with an 8.08/184.42 when Tom Sturm's Camaro failed to fire. In the second round, her 7.40/204.60 lost to Don Prudhomme's 7.06/214. Ran 211.76 at Motion Raceway, Decatur, IL. |

Notes: Ran late 1966/67, first as Hilborn-injected, later as blown. Notable for stock-displacement, stock crank small block 289 Ford. Ran fuel, backed with a C-4 auto trans. One-piece lift-off glass body and unusual aluminum frame (including roll bar) contributed to light weight. (The truck weighed in sub-1400 pounds, and Nash was quoted in late '66 as saying he was still shooting for 1200.) Still, the aluminum frame scared the NHRA, which banned this construction in 1967, ending the Bronco's career. Nash went on to earn fame for developing the very popular Doug Nash 5-speed transmission. | Doug Nash ran a B/FX 289 Comet in '64-'65. He debuted this Bronco late in '66. It still ran a 289, but after that, it was like night and day. His new Bronco featured a 112" aluminum chassis built by himself and Tom Smith of Wolverine Diesel. The transmission was a C-4 Ford and the rear was also a Ford with 4.71 gears. First runs were made without the body on the chassis and the best was 9.00/160. After the body was mounted, the best was 9.20/145. The boxy Bronco body really slowed the mph down. The candy lime and burgundy lacquer was applied by Paul Shedlik. |
