Notes: Ford and Mercury contracted Dearborn Steel Tubing to build 11 A/FX Comets for the 1964 season: 10 hardtop coupes and one four-door wagon. Nicholson started the season with the wagon and drove it until April, when his coupe was finished. All these lightweights were T-10 4-speed cars. - RT | At Cecil County, Nicholson ran a 10.75/127.65, beating a 10.99 Bud Faubel challenge. These times were gas and carbs at 3200 pounds. |

Notes: Known as "The Ugly Duckling," the un-sexy 4-door wagon was a practical attempt to improve traction by getting more static weight over the rear tires. Of 11 '64 Comets modified for the factory by Dearborn Steel Tubing, all were hardtop coupes except this wagon. With it Nicholson set Low ET of 11.44 in a large field of A/FXers at '64 Winternationals. After a successful stint with the car Nicholson received a hardtop coupe. The grocery getter was handed off to Ed Schartman in April. The 7/10-64 National Dragster has pictures of this car, unlettered, running under a new non-Nicholson-affiliated sponsorship, driver in Honolulu, Hawaii in July '64, but photos elsewhere show Schartman driving this car at the '64 Nationals at Indy. The Comet wagon was built on a Falcon wheelbase of 109 inches - five inches shorter than the coupe and sedan. It weighed 3280 pounds with rear-mounted battery and fiberglass front body panels. Before Spring, Don had this wagon down to an 11.12. |

Notes: One of four factory '65 Comets equipped with the 427 Cammer. Others went to Arnie Beswick, Hayden Proffitt, and George DeLorean. It started with a stock wheelbase, but Nicholson eventually converted to AWB configuration to remain competitive with the funny "match race" Mopars. It started with gas but quickly progressed to fuel as the environment evolved from legal A/FX to "run whatcha brung" match races. Nicholson tried various induction systems during the season: two four-barrel Holleys, four two-barrel Webers, and finally Hilborn injection. Ran first unblown 150 at Capitol Raceway. This car was sold to Pete Gates in 1966. When Nicholson crashed his flip-top "Eliminator I" Comet later in the year, he temporarily borrowed the '65 car back from Gates. (Gates won the first Super Stock Nationals with this "obsolete" racecar.) Eventually, it was sold to Fred Gendian, who ran the car in 1967/68. | Don Nicholson had an amazing season in '64 with his 427 Comet. He won 71 out of 76 match races and was part of why Chrysler debuted its altered wheelbase funny cars in '65. Don ran almost the entire '65 season without the altered wheelbase, and he more than held his own against the Mopars. It wasn’t until late in the season that the Comet's wheelbase was altered. Notes: After a year of fine-tuning the Comet, the '67 version pretty much owned the class except for Ed Schartman's late-season run in a similar Comet. The new '67 car was 50 pounds lighter than the '66, and the engine was moved back five inches in the chassis. The body also sat lower on the frame. The Comet retained its 116" wheelbase. Don started the season by qualifying #1 with an 8.42/169.70 (Low ET and Top Speed) at the Irwindale New Year's Funny Car race on January 2. He ran strong, hitting an 8.43/168.22 in the semifinal while beating Charlie Allen's Dart. In the final, he polished off Hayden Proffitt's 8.79/158 Corvair effort with an 8.47 at an early shut-off 140.13. This was just the first of many wins for the year. Eight spots were available at the Fontana Funny Car show on January 7, and 42 cars fought to get into the show. Once again, the "Eliminator II" Comet qualified #1. This time an 8.01 (Low ET) got the spot. He beat Al Vanderwoude's out-of-shape Dart in the first round, with an 8.43/130.43, and in the semifinals, he soloed with an 8.26/147.54 when Dick Loehr's Mustang fired to fire. In the final, he whupped Ray Alley's 8.52/178 'Cuda effort with an 8.08/172.41. Then came another victory on January 29 at the AHRA Winternationals. He was running in the "unlimited" Funny Car class. "Dyno" ran 8.32/170 in the first round, and an 8.35/172.08 (Top Speed) in the semifinals over Don Gay. In the final, it was the two Logghe-built Comets of Nicholson and Schartman. Don took the win with an 8.26 (Low ET) at 171.75 over Eddie's 8.48/169. A week later (February 5), he was at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Twelve cars ran in the S/XS class. Don beat teammate Jack Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.42/170.77. In round two, he faced Larry Reyes, and once again, the Comet came out on top, beating Reyes' 8.68/172 with an 8.54/170.77. He beat Gene Ciambella's Jeep in the semifinals with an 8.63/172.41. This put him in the final against Roger Wolford in yet another Jeep. "Dyno" got the victory with an 8.56/170.45. He then ran in the Super Eliminator class and lasted until the semifinals before losing to Hugh Tucker. Nicholson won the Bakersfield meet on February 19, beating Ron Runyan's "Blue Hell" Corvette in the final with an 8.21/172.09 (Low ET and Top Speed). He was running a lot of match races between meets and doing well. He beat "Mr. Norm" two straight at Green Valley early in March with two 8.2 runs. On March 26, he was at Paradise Drag Strip and was forced to use his '66 car since his '67 Comet had been damaged. It was a 1,000-foot track, and even with the old car, he beat Arnie Beswick two straight. To be fair, Arnie had problems, a broken fuel tank, and a blown rear end, but "Dyno" ran a hard-to-beat 6.38 in his first race solo run. After the first two races, it was discovered that Don broke a valve spring, so Beswick soloed to a third race win with a 6.89. On April 2, he faced Don Gay at Aquasco in a best two out of three match race. Don won two straight, running 8.53/160.00 and 8.39/167.91. A week later (April 9), he was at Cecil County running Dave Strickler. The track record going into the match race was an 8.37 held by Nicholson himself. In the first race, an 8.27/166.97 beat a fouling Strickler. In the second race, Don reset the track record to an 8.17/172.08 over the Corvette's 8.83/161. For the final race, the track officials gave Strickler a half-second handicap. Dave ran his best time ever (to this point), an 8.73/162 to beat the Comet's 8.24/166.05. Nicholson still won the match. Tommy Grove cut his own throat on April 30 when Nicholson pulled into Greensboro for their match race with a blown transmission. Grove loaned Don a transmission, and Nicholson beat Tommy's Mustang two straight with runs of 7.12/151 and 7.05 on the 1/8 mile track. The 7.05 and the 151 were new track records. On May 10, Don lost a car at Cecil County's Factory Showdown. He beat Jim Osteen driving Don Gay's GTO in the first round, with an 8.34/171. The "Ramchargers" Dart failed to fire in the second round, so Don got a solo. The solo pass didn't go so well as the car became airborne near the end of the run, and the body ripped off. Don and the chassis ended up in a marsh that ran along the shutdown area of the track. He was OK, but the Comet was not. The first thing he asked the rescue workers was, "what did I run?" He had run an 8.04 for Low ET of the meet. He was out of commission for a while repairing the car, but he was running strong again by June. "Dyno" was in Detroit for a match against the "Ramchargers." Jim Thornton was driving the Dodge, and Nicholson ran 8.35/148.51 and 8.20/165.74 to win two straight. At Bristol for the NHRA Springnationals, Don set Low ET in qualifying with an 8.237/165.74. But he had a little snooze on the line in the opening round, and his 8.36/166.97 lost to eventual winner Grove's 8.440/169.17. A week later (June 17), he was at York US 30 for a big race. Unfortunately, he fouled against Dick Jesse in the first round. On June 28, Atco hosted the Drag News Invitational. It was an eight-car field, and the Comets of Schartman and Nicholson would end up in the final together. "Dyno" opened eliminations with an 8.33/148.76 over Gay's wheelstanding GTO and a semifinal 8.11/172 beat Bruce Larson. Eddie ran 8.28 and 8.48 to reach the final. In their race, Don set Low ET with a track record 8.03 at 172.41 (Top Speed) to win over Ed's 8.27/166. He started the month of July by winning over an eight-car car at Martin, Michigan, on the 1st. An 8.15 (Low ET) at 174.75 beat the "Ramchargers'" 8.37/176 in the first round, and in the semifinals, he beat Jim Liberman. He was supposed to run Roger Lindamood in the final, but the final was never run due to rain. "Dyno" was declared the winner based on his times. On July 7, he was at Lakeland, where he ran 7.99/178. Cecil County hosted four FCs on July 22. In his first race, Don ran 8.16/174.41 to beat Thornton's out-of-shape pass in the "Ramchargers" car that knocked out the speed clocks. In his next race, Nicholson gated Lindamood and beat him with an 8.18/171.10 to Roger's 8.15/176. Nicholson could not run his third race against Schartman as his bearings were burnt. Eddie could not run either as he had bent his front axle during a wheelstanding run earlier. Early in September, he was at Muncie for a UDRA race. He was upset in the first round, when "Dyno's" 8.20/170.13 lost to Pat Minick's 8.03/182." Dyno" won the Factory Showdown held at Covington on October 1. He beat Cecil Yother and Lindamood to reach the final against Phil Bonner. Don set Low ET in the final while winning with a 6.84. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for its Experimental Stock Invitational race. He was late off the line in the opening round and lost to Grove. The times of these FC's kept dropping, and by the end of the year, you had to be running in the "sevens" if you wanted to win. Early in November, Lions held its East-West Championships. Nicholson by now had been forced to run a supercharger to stay competitive. In round one, he ran 8.30 to defeat "Jungle Jim" Liberman. A much better 7.92/179.28 beat Butch Leal's 8.05/177 in a good race. He faced Grove's Mustang in the final, and the two "Cammer" powered cars shot down the track with Nicholson's 7.97/174.08 getting the victory over Grove's 8.10/167. C-6 auto trans. Ran 8.17/181.08 at OCIR Mfg. Meet 11/25/67. Don also reportedly ran 7.89/178. We need confirmation. |

Notes: SOHC Ford, C-6 auto trans. Ran 7.35 at Detroit Dragway vs. Walt Knoch. Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, trick Shedlik paint job. Also, Don was runner-up to Paul Stage's AA/C in Super Eliminator (pre-Funny Car Eliminator) at '68 Indy Nationals. - Danny White | Nicholson's early-season '68 car was destroyed in late July in a collision on the Pennsylvania Turnpike near Carlisle, according to the 7/26/68 edition of Drag Times. Crewmembers Jim Campbell and Wally English were returning Nicholson's car to Detroit following the Super Stock Nationals. The impact threw the Cougar over the cab and onto the roadway, demolishing it. English was killed in the collision; Campbell was injured but recovered. - RT | The Cougar debuted at a match race in May against Jim Liberman at Capitol. Don lost two transmissions and the match when Jim strapped a 7.66/187.88 on him in the first race and rain kept the next two rounds from being run."Dyno also didn't have too much luck when he showed up for the Cecil Fuel Showdown on May 18. During a time trial run, he broke a timing chain, and he was unable to run in eliminations."Dyno" showed the world that he was still one of the top dogs in Funny Car racing when he showed up at Milan, Michigan on July 7 for a match race against "Fast Eddie" Schartman. Nicholson won all three races. His times were 7.66/184.04 and 7.70/182.18 in the first two races. But he really showed 'em in the last race with his 7.48/185.86. The following week (July 13), he was at Capitol Raceway for its Supercharged Invitational race. In the first round, Malcolm Durham fouled against him at Don advanced with an 8.11/165.74. He lost to Lyle Fisher's 8.19/180 in round two with an ailing 8.36/116.88. But due to the "break rule," he got back into the show for the semifinal. Once again, he faced Fisher. Lyle failed to fire this time, so "Dyno" soloed at 11.66. He met Larry Reyes in the final, and the 'Cuda had him covered, running 7.54/192 for the win over Don's 8.05/181.80 runner-up effort. - Ron Howard |

Notes: 427 Ford Cammer, C-6 automatic combo. This was Dyno Don's last flopper. He joined many of the early funny car drivers as they migrated back to the Super Stock and the new-for-1970 Pro Stock classes. Nicholson never drove this car after November 1968, instead handing the controls to Frank Oglesby. |
