Notes: Jim qualified #22 at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.79/215.31. A first-round 6.77/221.67 lost to Larry Fullerton's 6.58/217. At the NHRA Gatornationals, Jim qualified #8 with a 6.55, but he lost to Dave Condit driving the "L. A. Hooker" in the first round. He was at Green Valley Raceway in May for the AHRA Grand American where he reached the semifinals before he fouled against Tommy Grove. Dragway 42 hosted the next AHRA Grand American at the end of May and Jim qualified #3 for the sixteen-car field. In the first round his 8.56/134.52 advanced as his opponent, Dale Pulde, broke in the Mickey Thompson Grand Am. But in round two, it was Jim who broke, giving "Jungle Jim" Liberman a free ride into the semifinals. On June 3, he was at Denver's Century 21 Raceway for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified with a 6.92, but lost early. The following weekend he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified on the "bump" for the sixteen-car field with a 6.93. He improved to 6.79/218.97 in the first round, to upset Ed McCulloch's 6.84/218. In round two, he defeated Don Schumacher with a 6.84/211.76, but a semifinal 6.99/176.47 lost to eventual winner Dave Beebe's 6.71/222. Jim won the Amarillo WCS meet in June 73 with a 6.98/189.49 over Leroy Goldstein who smoked the tires in the Candies & Hughes car. Early in July, he was at Kansas City for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim reached the final against Raymond Beadle, but both went up in smoke and Beadle's 7.39/223 got the victory over Nicoll's 7.59/189. His next stop was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 6.58 qualified #10 and in the opening round, his 6.57 beat Tom Prock. But in round two, his 6.83 lost to Dale Emery's 6.46. He got a win at St. Louis on August 5 for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. Jim qualified #4 with a 6.65 and he beat Ira Hollensbe and Doc Halladay in the first two rounds. In the semifinals, Billy Meyer smoked the tires against him and Nicoll's 6.65/209.31 moved into the final against Don Prudhomme. The "Snake" had run 6.67 in his semifinal win so Jim had lane choice. It proved worth having as his 6.63/210.78 took the win over Prudhomme. Shortly after that he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships. The show was run differently as all cars raced the first-round, but only the eight lowest ETs, win or lose, moved into the first-round of the race. Jim’s 6.71/204.54 made the show, but in the first round, his 6.66/210.77 lost to Clare Sanders' 6.58/222 in the "Ramchargers" car. He ran at the AHRA National Challenge race at the end of August. A 6.58/213.27 qualified #5 in the 32-car field. He improved slightly to a 6.56/218 in the first round, to beat alternate DeWayne Engness. In round two, his 6.72/217 stopped Sush Matsubara and a round three 6.96/205 put Meyer on the trailer. He beat a tire-smoking Schumacher in the semifinal with a 6.77/206 and was to face Prudhomme for the money. Unfortunately, while pulling up to the line in the final, the car started leaking oil and he was shut down. Schumacher got back in on the "break rule.” | AKA Superman. Best NHRA national event times were 6.463 at Indy and 226.13 at Ontario. We originally had a 6.25/240 recorded for 1973, which was too fast for that year. Did Jim ever run those numbers?

Notes: Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. Nicoll didn't have the success in '74 that he enjoyed in '73. Jim qualified #7 at the AHRA Winternationals with a 6.44. He beat Gordie Bonin's 6.73 in the "Hawaiian" in the first round, with a 6.49/225.00. He advanced past the second round when Sush Matsubara broke on the line. In the semifinal, a 6.37/230.17 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.41/230, but, unfortunately for Jim, he broke and was unable to make the final, reinstating Prudhomme. At the NHRA Gatornationals, his 6.87 qualified #12, but an opening round 6.83/212.76 lost to Paul Smith's 6.65/221 in the "Fireball Vega." The team was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race. Jim’s quick-leaving 6.71/211.76 beat Pat Foster's 6.66/215 in the first round, but he lost to eventual winner Jim Dunn in round two. He fouled against Gene Snow in the semifinals at the AHRA Grand American held at Dragway 42 in May. Nicoll failed to qualify for the NHRA Springnationals.

Notes: Photo from the 1975 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. | Early in May, Nicoll was at Tulsa International for the AHRA Southwest Grand American. It was a sixteen-car show, and in the opening round of eliminations, his 7.06/179.20 beat Paul Gordon's 7.22/199. He lost to the eventual winner Dale Emery, in round two. Jim was at St. Louis on June 1 for the AHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 6.56/202.71, but he lost to Jim Liberman in the first round. The following week, he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, where his 6.497/194.80 qualified #5. He beat a tire-smoking Pee Wee Wallace in the first round, with a 6.63/188.28, but his second round, 6.56/198.23, lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.40/219. His next stop was at Martin, Michigan, for an eight-car show. There he ran 6.74/187.89 to beat Norm Wilcox and the "Hawaiian" in the first round, and a semifinal 6.63/201.79 took out Kenny Safford, who smoked the tires in the "Mr. Norm" car. He faced off against "Jungle Jim" Liberman in the final, and Nicoll's 6.57/204.08 scored the victory over Liberman's early shut-off 6.90/155. At the IHRA Springnationals at Bristol in June, he ran 6.55/216.28, but Bob Pickett took him out in round one. On July 6, he was at Green Valley for the AHRA Grandnationals. His 6.53 qualified #2 behind John Luna's 6.49. He went on to win over the sixteen-car field. Shortly after this, Nicoll was helping to work on John Luna's car at his shop just outside of Dallas, Texas. His shop could only house one car at a time, and Jim pulled his car out and put it on his trailer so that Luna's went inside the shop. Jim later felt sick and went inside to bed and stayed there for the rest of the weekend. While he was there, someone loaded up his trailer and race car and took off. Nicoll offered a $5,000 reward for any information on the whereabouts of the car.

Notes: Nicoll's last funny car. Jim debuted his new Monza at Beeline Dragway in January for the Phoenix Winter Classic. He qualified #15, and he lost to Dale Emery in the first round. Green Valley Raceway track owner Bill Heilscher held a series of eight-car AA/FC shows called the 200 mph Funny Car Championships. The first was on February 7/8, and Tom Prock won both days on his first trip ever to the state of Texas. Saturday, Prock beat Jim Nicoll with a 6.14/226, and on Sunday, he stopped Motes with a 6.14/233.76. Jim's only NHRA national event in 1976 was the Gatornationals, where he did not qualify with best times of 6.663/216.34. Green Valley info from Bret Kepner

Notes: On April 20, he had the only fuel FC that showed up at DeSoto Memorial Raceway for the second NHRA Division 2 race. He made a 14.25/53.50 solo to win. At the 1980 AHRA GrandNats, Dragway 42, Don was an alternate for this 8-car show, but rain delays sent many teams home, including Tom McEwen. McEwen qualified 5th and was replaced by Nieves' Charger. He faced No. 1 qualifier Dale Pulde in round one and lost. Rick Howard photo (frame-grabbed from Super 8mm film) from that event.

Notes: Bruce qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Western Nationals with a 5.63/257.87. He lost to eventual winner John Force in the first round. At the NHRA Mile High Nationals, he qualified #12 with a 5.71/261.39. A 5.56/257.80 in the first round beat Jim Epler's 5.68/215, but he lost to Gordie Bonin in round two. Nilsen had problems at Sonoma for the NHRA California Nationals, and his best of 6.13/253.23 failed to make the show. A week later (August 8), he qualified on the "bump" at the NHRA Northwest Nationals with a 5.462/269.38. He lost to Cruz Pedregon's 5.25/280 in the first round, with a 5.64/260.64. Qualifying wasn't a problem at the NHRA Northstar Nationals, as only fifteen cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Still, Bruce ran 5.59/268.31 to qualify #11 for the show. Unfortunately, he fouled in the first round against Gary Densham.

Notes: Qu Voe is a chemical company. | I think the Charger's best run in '72 was a 6.990/206.89 DNQ at Indy. The speed was a duplicate of an early '72 run at the Division 3 WCS. I think our best ET was 7.01. We lost to Big Al in Dale Creasy's car in the final. Creasy ran a 6.70 something, but Ed beat Marshall on the lights by about half an hour and almost beat him. Dale was having a fit on the starting line. Good time:-) - Paul Stenquist

Notes: The first Fever Vette, which was red, crashed at US 30. It was the first time we had run it with a new high-compression stroker motor I had been working on. The run previous someone oiled down the track, and, as was the custom at 30, they just sprinkled some rice hulls on the oil, waved some brooms at it, and told us to fire up. I objected, but they said we had to either run or pull the car off the starting line. So we did. When Ed crossed the rice hulls, the car got loose, he got in the dirt, the left-front spindle and kingpin assembly broke off the axle, the car dug in, and went end over end. The best pass for Fever in '74 was 6.61/227 at US 30. - Paul Stenquist

Notes: Second Fever car. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. | The second Vette, the yellow one, was a handful as well. It would make it to the end of the track with a stock stroke motor, but was way up on the tires. I remember looking at the black tracks: They were only about three inches wide at the finish line. Both of the Vettes always had handling problems - they got up way too high on the tires. They didn't have enough downforce, due to how close the spoiler was to the rear of the roof - I think. That did produce big mph. We ran over 230 a number of times, with a best ET of 6.37, running a stock stroke motor built - I believe - to approximately the same combination as those that Dale Pulde and Cliff Brown were running. Jungle watched the car run somewhere one day, shook his head and said you guys gotta put a lot more spoiler on that thing. Finally, I asked the guys who owned the car - Tollstam, Trybula, and Marrone - to make a new spoiler for the rear, at least ten inches taller with air dams on the side. I was working on the car by myself at the time, and I had all I could do to get the motor and clutch ready. I dropped the body off at Frank's boneyard, and he said he'd try to get it done. He didn't. Our next race was at Martin. I had another stroker motor in the car, and Ed went backwards into the guardrail at about half track when the car got totally loose. That was the last of the Corvette experiment. When McEwen premiered his Vette the next year (with the newer body style) it had a tall spoiler with air dams. And yes, somewhere in between the US 30 crash and the Martin crash, the car got turned around at Detroit Dragway and slid through the traps backwards. And that's the whole Fever Vette story. - Paul Stenquist

Notes: Looking back at some notes I made back in the day, I think the best run for Fever in '76 was a 6.61/237 at US 30. I choose to forget most of what happened in '76 :-). Our car always ran about the same ETs at US 30 as elsewhere, but it would mile per hour better if Ed drove it out the back door. That's because the speed trap at 30 was from the finish line to 30 feet beyond the finish line, while at other tracks, it was from 15 feet in front of the finish line to 15 feet behind the finish line. So It was possible to add another five to ten mph. That 6.61/237 at 30 in '76 probably would have been a 6.61/227 at Martin. - Paul Stenquist | The car was destroyed at Martin, Michigan, on May 23 during the NHRA Division 3 race. Notes: O'Brien was at El Paso in mid-May for the NHRA Division 4 race. Only five cars showed, and his 7.90/163.04 qualified second to Chris Lane's 7.57/177. He made an easy first-round solo when Jim West broke, and in the semi-final, he got the "odd-lot" solo and ran 10.52 to advance. He was to run Randy Lackey's Chevy-powered car in the final, but Frank broke and had to watch as Lackey made a single for the win. Booked into four-car Rocky Mountain Funny Car championships at Bandimere in July 1976 but broke and could not compete. In August, Frank won the final NHRA Division 7 race held at Bonneville Raceway. He only needed a final round 8.56/118.85 when final-round opponent Chris Lane broke.

Notes: Hi Guys. I'm not questioning this drivers name, because he could be another driver that I've never heard of, but could it be a mistake for Jim O'Connor, who did drive for Mr. Norm's in 1965? - DD | Also the car ID as '64 Dodge Polara makes zero sense. - RT

Notes: Former John Lombardo, Dennis Geisler, Barry Bowling, Peter Russo, and Graeme Cowin ride. Graeme reportedly ran in on alcohol and also set it up as an altered (1980s). We need to confirm that it is back on nitro.
