Notes: Gervase O'Neill was originally from Canada before moving to California. Gervase's brother Johnny, who opened up Johnny's Tune Up in Gardena, California, was his tuner. Gervase drove an A/FX Chevelle that became his first funny car. The O'Neill Brothers next built this "King Rat" Corvette that raced until 1970. |

Notes: Gervase O'Neill was originally from Canada before moving to California. His brother Johnny, who opened up Johnny's Tune-Up in Gardena, California, was his tuner. After racing a Chevelle and a Corvette, a new Camaro was built in 1972, complete with Chevrolet cast iron Rat Power. The "King Rat" Camaro was a regular at Southern California match races until 1977. The Camaro eventually ran a best of 6.67 with pure Chevy power. Only a couple of racers went faster with a Chevy. Gervase might not have been a big winner or as well known as other Chevy racers, but he goes down in history as one of the quickest fuel Chevy racers ever. Gervase was at OCIR on March 24 for the final All-Pro race. The final featured sixteen-car fields and he qualified #14 with a 7.36. In the opening round of eliminations, his 7.53/133.13 fell to Dave Beebe's 6.96/206 in the "Mr. Ed" Satellite. O'Neill was at OCIR for its Hang Ten Funny Car 500 race on May 26. It was a sixteen-car show, and his 6.99 qualified #8. In the first round, his 6.90/184.42 beat Rick Ramsey's 7.20/195 in the "Keeling and Clayton" car. But a troubled 21.11/64.05 in round two lost to John Collins' 7.82/171. Gervase was back at OCIR in June for its Lions Championships. It was an eight-car field, and O'Neill qualified on the "bump" with a 7.28. He improved to 7.21 at 166.05 in the opening round of eliminations, but lost to Roger Garten's 6.80/225 in the "War Horse." |

In mid-March, he was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race, but the car died on the line in the first round, giving his opponent, Bob Pickett, a solo into round two. He ran 7.10/151 at the Manufacturers Meet, Orange County, CA, 11/75. |

Notes: "Eliminator" became "Dyno Don's Eliminator" after Oglesby took over the driving chores at the start of the '69 season. The deal with Nicholson was that they split the earnings 50/50. It didn't start that well when he failed to qualify at the AHRA Winternationals. Frank was a "good guy" to Arnie Beswick when the two showed up at Houston for a best of three match race in March. Arnie blew a rear end on his burnout preparing for their first race. Oglesby could have singled for the first win of the match, but instead, he waited while Beswick replaced the rear with one borrowed from Don Gay. Once again they lined up for their first race and Arnie's 8.41/175 beat the Cougar's motor-blowing 8.53/155.17. Frank was done for the day while Arnie soloed for the match race victory. On April 13, he ran Bruce Larson in a match race at Cecil County. He broke in the first race losing to Larson's 7.79/191 and was out of competition for the day giving Bruce a solo run to win the match. Aquasco held its fourth annual Funny Car Invitational on May 4, and Frank beat an out of shape Leonard Hughes in the first round. But in the semifinal against Tommy Grove, he had problems and was forced to shut off on the line. In June, he raced at an eight-car show at New York where a first-round 7.78/188.66 lost to Jim Liberman's Low ET of 7.49/193. But Liberman broke so Frank got back in on the break rule. He faced Lew Arrington in the semis, but fouled away a 7.85/197.36 to Lew's 7.68/196.50. On June 22, he was at Houston for a best of three match against Shirl Greer. Shirl fouled in the first race and Frank won with an 8.01. In the second race, Oglesby beat Greer with a 7.84/185 to win the match two straight. The two were going to have a third run anyway, but the Cougar's brakes failed and Bobby Wood filled in for him. Late in August, he raced at an eight-car show at Detroit Dragway, but in the first round, he lifted a blower on an 8.56/150 pass against Larry Reyes. That was it for the Cougar that day. He raced at Nashville's King of the Funnies meet on September 13, where he beat Henry Garcia in the Car Shop Camaro before losing to Mike Burkhart in the semifinal. |

Notes: Dyno Don's '68 Logghe car, cool Paul Shedlik paint. Don ran a 7.48 early in 1968 at Milan, but the car ended up being run by Frank. Dyno disliked blowers and started match racing his '65 AA/MP Mustang. Don disliked the FIRES that resulted from the exploding blown engines that burned many drivers. Gas Ronda's horrendous fire was enough for Dyno to get out of the funny cars ASAP. |

Notes: On March 6, Frank was at Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, he never got a chance to compete as his transporter was stolen with his race car inside. On May 28, at Connecticut for a 16-car race, Frank won running a best of 6.91/207. He lost low gear in his trans and ran high gear only in his two final runs. He also won the Phenix City $10,000 meet in November running a final round 7.19/193.12 over a broken Preston Davis. Also ran 6.92 at Warner Robins, Ga. |

Notes: On May 6, Frank was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He qualified #15 with a 14.49. In the first round, he faced Kenny Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car, but Oglesby got out of shape and shut off. Later in the month, he was at the Warner Robin National Open. An opening round 6.81 lost to eventual winner Tom Crevasse's identical 6.81. In June, he was at Blaney for the third NHRA Division 2 race. In the first round, his 7.74/198.66 beat a tire-smoking Paul Smith, but he got out of shape against Shirl Greer in the semifinals and shut off. Shortly after that, he was at the Atlanta Invitational. He beat Bobby Wood in the opening round with an early chute 6.98, but in round two, his reverser broke and he was unable to back up from his burnout against Cliff Brown. It would have been an easy win as Brown had lost his blower belt. |

Notes: Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1975. Frank was at Rockingham in September for the IHRA US Open Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and he ended up as the first alternate at 7.78. But when Don Casto's car broke, he got into the field. In the opening round, Rodger Hamrick broke, and Frank advanced with a 7.87/120.32. In the second round, he and his opponent, Dale Pulde, got crossed up, and his 11.88 lost to Dale's 9.60. |

Notes: Oglesby was at Darlington attempting to qualify for the eight-car field for the IHRA Winternationals. His 7.83/205 best was good for the first alternate. He got into the show when #8 qualifier Murf McKinney had some problems and could not race. Frank took his place in the show and nearly pulled off the upset. In the opening round, Oglesby's 6.96/211 beat Bob Gottschalk's 7.18. A semifinal 6.60/218 beat Denny Savage's 6.59/218. He went up against Dale Pulde in the final. It wasn't much of a race between the two as while Frank was slipping and sliding to 12.39/65, Dale was winning with a Low ET and Top Speed blast of 6.35/229. At the AHRA Ozark Nationals, Frank's 7.34/172.08 qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field. He improved to a 6.95/197 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get past John Collins, who beat him with a 6.87/191. Shortly after that (July 23), he was at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. Unfortunately, his 6.62 best (first alternate) failed to qualify for the eight-car with a 6.59 "bump." Frank was in Atlanta in October for the IHRA Winston Nationals. He lost to eventual winner Pete Williams driving the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. Frank did not race in any NHRA national events in 1975. We need confirmation of the 6.40/238 times. | Spring 1977 SS&DI: John H. Johnson Jr., son of Ebony Magazine Publisher John Johnson, temporarily threw in with Oglesby on his car. No national tour or even updating the car, probably local expenses, but this is still a highly unlikely venture. I saw a picture of the car. - Joe Moore |
