Notes: Frank attempted to qualify at NHRA Gainesville but was the final DNQ (times unavailable). In April, he also failed to qualify at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. He was at Englishtown on May 4 for the NHRA Division 1 opener. His 6.31/222.22 qualified #3 for the eight-car field, but he broke against Bruce Larson in the opening round. Frank was a DNQ at the PHR event in 1980 at 11.44 seconds. Frank used comp number 109 while in the Mello Yello car. His normal comp number was 232. 109 could have been an IHRA number? |

Notes: Kenji started the season by pushing Jim Dunn's car to a 5.25/278.46 to qualify #10 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, both he and Tom Hoover smoked the tires in the first round, with Hoover's 8.45/150 beating Okazaki's shut off 11.42/73.87. At the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals in Arizona, a 5.29/280.46 qualified #9. He beat Whit Bazemore in the first round, with a 5.30/268.09, but an even better 5.27/267.05 in round two, lost to eventual winner Cruz Pedregon's 5.13/289. The NHRA Supernationals at Houston was not a good outing for Dunn and Okazaki. They qualified #8 with a 5.30/267.45. Kenji went back out to try to better his time and had a motor blow. The resulting fire destroyed the body, and they were unable to continue in the eliminations. The team was unable to repair in time for the NHRA Gatornationals, but they were back in action at Atlanta for the NHRA Southern Nationals in April. Unfortunately, a best of 6.16/155.44 failed to qualify. Kenji qualified at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals in May. His 5.43/261.62 qualified #9. More bad luck set in when he broke in the first round, against Gordon Mineo. The next race was the Mopar Parts Nationals at Englishtown. Kenji ran 5.27/262.92 to qualify #10. A 5.23/269.13 advanced past the first round when Bazemore broke(?). He lost to Chuck Etchells in round two. |

Notes: Kenji qualified second at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 5.02/292.58 followed Cruz Pedregon's 5.01/297. In the first round, his 5.23/273.39 beat John Force's 5.26/287. Notes: On this car's very first run, we set a new track record at Detroit for ET and mph. We raced at 14 events in 1971 and set track records at 11 of the 14 events. Later that year, I had the worst funny car fire in the history of drag racing to that point at Lebanon Valley, NY. I was burned over 60 percent of my body. We could not make that bigger motor run as well as the smaller Rams motor, although the Snake, Ray Beadle, Pat Foster, and others had luck with it. We had two Ed Pink motors, but ran a tenth and a half slower than the 426. We ran high 6.30s at NY National. We ran 6.39 at Detroit. Then the Ramchargers came out and ran 6.38 to get the track record back. Then we came out and ran 6.36 to take it back again. I stopped racing at the end of 1973. I had developed some ulcer problems and that ended my deal. Too much living out a suitcase and not eating right, etc. Had a chance to race for Mazmanian a year later when Danny Ongais went IndyCar racing, but was having too much fun with my young son and stayed out. Notes: Ray built another car and was going to drive it himself. He asked me to come to Memphis for the first race. But we decided that it was better if I drove the car and so I did after being laid up for a year.
