Notes: This is actually the '69 car that Danny had great success with. A '70 grill, new paint, but still a 427 SOHC power plant. Not as much success in 1970. See Barb's comments on the '69 car. Ongais started the '70 season at Irwindale for their New Year's Day race, where he qualified fifth with a 7.55 in the sixteen-car field. A first-round 7.58/190.66 beat a crossed-up Marv Eldridge. He ran Low ET of the meet with a 7.42/196.92 over Tom Grove's 7.71/194.38. Danny's motor blew in the semifinal, and the car caught fire on a 7.71/178.92 pass losing to Johnny Wright in another Mickey Thompson Mustang. Danny was OK other than some minor leg burns, and the car had minor damage. On January 25 at the AHRA Winternationals, he cooked his motor in the first round, while waiting for teammate Arnie Behling in M/T's Maverick to stage. He finally ran and won with a 7.61 over the ailing Maverick. A second-round 7.90 beat a sleepy Gene Snow at 7.66. Unfortunately, Ongais was unable to make the semis, and Snow was reinstated. He qualified second at NHRA Winternationals with a 7.53 but lost in round two. An eight-car show was run at Irwindale on February 15, and a 7.65 qualified Danny second. A first-round 7.68/189.06 beat Mike Miller's out-of-shape Dart. In the semis, a 7.52/195.94 beat Gordon Mineo, and in the final, Ken Safford cracked off a 7.35/197 over Ongais' 7.60/169.81. He suffered a rare first-round loss on February 22 at the third OCIR All-Pro on February 22 when Dave Beebe's 7.41/189 beat his 7.69/193.54. Ongais beat Prudhomme with a 7.25/201 to win the Lions AHRA meet. This was the meet where Don Garlits trans exploded, and he lost part of his foot. Because the lights were damaged, the funny car final used a flag starter. At Fremont, Ongais set a 208.32 track record. Another win came over an eight-car field on March 14 at OCIR for the blue Mustang's last win. A first-round 7.60/193.96 advanced when low qualifier Mike Van Sant lost oil pressure and shut off on the line. A semifinal 7.72/193.13 beat Steve Bovan, who lost an engine. In the final, a 7.61/187.50 beat Warren Gunter's VW at 8.09/176.12. OCIR held its final All-Pro race on March 28, and Ongais ran a first-round 8.37/113.63 easing up over a fouling Leroy Hales. Up against Tom McEwen in round two, he lost fire, and Gunter's VW was called in on the break rule to replace him. On April 18 at OCIR for another eight-car show, Danny qualified with a 7.39/182.18. He beat Bob Pickett (8.37/182) in the first round, with a 7.61/184.80. In the semifinal, a broken fuel pump drive ended his chances. Arnie Behling crashed and totaled the car at Lions soon after. Best NHRA National event speed 199.11, but in this car?

Notes: Danny started his season at Irwindale's Grand Premiere on January 12. He qualified #5 with a 6.58 and in the first round, Russell Long, driving Charlie Proite's Charger, fouled against him. Unfortunately, he lost to Don Prudhomme in round two. At Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals, a 6.58 qualified #14 in the sixteen-car field. He improved to 6.54/216.34 in the first round, but it wasn't enough to get past Raymond Beadle's 6.53/223 in Don Schumacher's Vega. Danny was the fourth alternate at the Pomona Winters (times not available). At the Bakersfield March Meet, a 6.41 (Low ET) qualified #1. He beat Gordon Swearingen in Jim Terry's Mustang in the first round, before a wheelstand in round two cost him the race against Jim Dunn. Danny was at OCIR for the AHRA Grand American race held on April 6. Unfortunately, his opening round 6.68/220.04 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.62/221. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale for the big 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships. There, a troubled 8.41 lost to Dave Condit's equally troubled 8.46. On May 5, he competed at Pomona for the NHRA Division 7 opener. It was an eight-car show, and his 6.60/226.13 (Top Speed) qualified #4. But he had problems again, and his 7.97 in the opening round lost to Jake Johnston's 6.97. Ongais won an eight-car show at Irwindale in June. He ran 6.82/217.91 and 6.65/210.17 on his way to the final, where he beat Sush Matsubara in Joe Pisano's Vega with a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet run of 6.60/220.58. | Vel Miletich, a Torrance car dealer, and Parnelli Jones, a Torrance native who won the Indianapolis 500 in 1963, were partners in VPJ enterprises. - Shav Glick, 1998 | Photo from the 1974 NHRA US Nationals, Indianapolis Raceway Park. This car is in the NHRA Museum in near original state. The team also ran 6.497/216.31 at Fremont AHRA on 3/30/74 and 6.471/224.43 at Indy. I seem to remember a 6.30 from this car, but I need evidence to post it. Any help?

Notes: McCord was 15 years old. Also ran 7.11 at Fresno. | On April 15, Gary was one of only four Funny Cars that showed up at Sacramento for the California State Championships. He advanced past the only round run before the final when Ron Williams left before the tree was activated. In the final, he met Jim Murphy. Unfortunately, Ormsby's Vega broke, and Jim took a solo 6.80 the win.

Notes: John Osborn started his driving career at 18 with my AA/GD in 1969. I started to buy the "Tulsa Oiler" funny car from Moritz in 1976 but backed out of the deal. The car originally belonged to Omar "Tentmaker" Carruthers. (I still have the car's logbook from when it was raced by Carruthers). - (I believe this note was from Connell Miller. Need to validate. Notes: One of the biggest surprises at the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona in '86 was Oswald's not qualifying for the show. His best attempt yielded only a 9.56/87.89. That was nowhere near the 6.09 "bump spot." The team then went to Atlanta for an eight-car show. Mark was still not running up to par, qualifying #7 with a 6.61/237.46. A first-round 6.38/247.93 (Top Speed) beat Billy Meyer, who shut off, but in the semifinals, he shut off and lost to Tom Hoover's 5.86 (Low ET) at 236. In Gainesville, things went much better for the NHRA Gatornationals, where Mark ran a 5.70/263.00 (Top Speed) to qualify #2. In the first round, an even better 5.65/259.36 beat a tire-smoking John Lombardo in the "Blue Max." In the second round, it was Oswald who smoked the tires and shut off to a 13.96/49.71 that lost to Ed McCulloch. Due to a rain delay, the Gatornats were run the same weekend as the IHRA Winternationals, so obviously, they didn't run the Darlington race. But they did make IHRA's second event, the Bayou Nationals at Louisiana Raceway Park. Oswald qualified #1 and beat McCulloch in the final for the victory. He lost to Jim Head in the first round, at the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta after qualifying #2 with a 5.72/258.91 behind Kenny Bernstein's 5.67/260. On May 4, the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Oswald qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.70, but he was upset in the opening round by Steve Hodkinson. Mark's off-pace 6.05/205.94 fell to Steve's low buck car that won with a 5.88/246. Early in June, Oswald went to Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 5.76/263.11 (Top Speed) qualified #4. He improved to 5.74/260.11 to defeat Force's 5.78/253 in round one, but he lost in the battle of the "beer cars" in the semifinal, where his 5.78/257.14 fell to Bernstein's 5.71/252. Mark qualified #5 at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals with a 5.75/249.86. In their first-round race, Hodkinson crossed the center line against him, and Oswald advanced with a 5.92/246.77. John Force also crossed the centerline against him in the second round, and once again, Mark advanced, this time at 5.84/252.59. This did not happen again in the semifinal, as eventual winner Tom McEwen laid a straight as an arrow 5.85/236 on him to beat the Firebird's 5.94/251.81. Another win finally came at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 5.65/259.66 (speed was a new track record). He continued to run strong through eliminations, and in the semifinal, his 5.76/255.17 beat Force's 5.84/253. The only problem was, Bernstein won his semifinal race with a 5.72/255, giving him lane choice in the final. Crew Chief Leonard Hughes had to be given a lot of credit in this win as he didn't dial in too much power and smoke the tires. Oswald won the final with a 5.76/255.76 over Kenny's 5.80/250. The following week (June 22), he also won the IHRA Gateway Nationals at St. Louis. He qualified #1 for the eight-car field with a 5.84/247.25. Larry Gould's 6.67/212 fell to his 5.89/252.80 in the opening round, and Mark reset both ends of the track record in the semifinal with a 5.77/254.95 that beat Paul Smith's 6.12/222 in the "Custom Body" car. He faced McEwen in the final, and there was no stopping the "Candies and Hughes" car on this day as Mark's 5.80/254.95 easily took the win over Tom's off-pace 6.19/176. At the end of June, the team was in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. A 5.69/260.25 got the pole, but Mark and Brad Tuttle fried the tires in the opening round. Brad's 6.59/251 came out on top over Oswald's 6.61/251. It was probably the best race to watch of round one. The two "beer cars then met again in the final at Milan Dragway for the IHRA Northern Nationals. They qualified one and two, with Bernstein's 5.81/256 getting the pole over Oswald's 5.87/245.90. Mark ran an easy 6.03/239.36 to advance in round one, when Doc Halladay broke. In the semifinal, he stepped it up to a 5.91/249 to beat a crossed-up Ed McCulloch. Bernstein had the edge in performance at this event, and it stayed true in the final where his 5.87/253 got the victory over Mark's 5.99/238.09 runner-up effort. Photo from Indy 1986. Mark also ran 265 at IHRA Bristol and won the 1986 IHRA championship. He also ran 5.619 at the 1986 Chiefs at Ennis. Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from The Drag Racing List December 86/January 87, Volume 1, Number 9. | Cool rear spoiler. Oswald, smoking the tires, also beat Bernstein wire-to-wire in the final of the '86 Mile-Highs, a hell of a race on YouTube. Bernstein didn't smoke 'em, and Oswald still beat him. - Joe Moore

Notes: After running a Pontiac for the last few seasons, Paul Candies and Leonard Hughes got the Ford deal when Kenny Bernstein went to Buick for '87. The team started the year with Oswald driving the car to a 5.52/268.65 (Top Speed) in qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. In the first round, he won a close one over Tom Hoover when both recorded 5.76 (Oswald at 256.33). But in round two, the car overpowered the track, and Mark smoked the tires to 9.51/90.68, losing John Martin's 5.83/209. At Darlington, the team got a lot of photo coverage during qualifying when a blower exploded and lifted the body off the chassis. We needless to say, they failed to qualify. By the NHRA Gatornationals, a week later, a new body was installed. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.59/266.98 (Top Speed). But in the opening round, Mark was surprised by Bruce Larson, who ran a career-best 5.68/261 to beat his 5.74/265.17. More disappointment came at the April NHRA Winston All-Star event held at the Texas Motorplex. It was an eight-car show. Oswald ran 5.67/262 twice during qualifying and failed to make the cut (first alternate). The next NHRA race was the Southern Nationals at Atlanta. A 5.73/263.08 qualified #5 and an easy 5.97/250.00 in the first round beat Steve Hodkinson. But in round two, his 5.68/263.26 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.61/264. The following week (May 3), the team was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. On one unofficial qualifying pass, Mark ran 263.62, which would have been good enough for Top Speed of the meet regardless of class if it was official. In the first round, his 5.74/251.39 beat Hoover, but bad luck in the form of a broken blower belt cost the team in the semifinal against Jim Head. The next stop was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Mark qualified #3 with a 5.82/256.26, but then it rained, and the race was delayed one week. The team decided to go to Bristol instead for the IHRA Springnationals. Mark set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 5.64 at 263.15. A first-round 5.80/252 beat Scott Kalitta, while in the semifinals, his 5.77/260 took out Hoover. This put the team in their first final round of '87. Mark's final round opponent was Mike Dunn driving Joe Pisano's car, who had ripped off a 270 mph run in eliminations. Unfortunately, Mark spun the tires in the final and shut off, giving Dunn the win at 5.78/257. A week later (June 7), the Candies and Hughes team was at Atco for the IHRA Summernationals. Finally, things "clicked" for them. Mark qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 5.75/263.92. Darrell Amberson broke on the line against him in the opening round, and Oswald advanced with a 5.73/247.25. A semifinal 5.57/263.92 beat a tire-smoking Doc Halladay and put the T-Bird into another final. This time, Mark faced veteran Ed McCulloch who had set a 5.51 track record earlier. The two had a great close race, with Oswald's 5.60/265.48 (Top Speed) winning over McCulloch's 5.60. With this win, Oswald led the IHRA Funny Car points standings over second-place Halladay. The team needed a little luck on the NHRA side of things. It didn't happen at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. There Mark "only" qualified #10 with a 5.80/252.18. He improved to 5.76/256.33 in the first round to beat John Force's 5.75/250, but a tire-smoking shut-off 12.42/65.82 lost to D. A. Santucci's 5.80/253. The team followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where only 15 cars showed for the sixteen-car field. Oswald took it easy in qualifying, running 6.04/248.07 for the #11 spot. This set up a first-round meeting with Bernstein. Mark was up for it, and his 5.88/238.24 put Bernstein's 5.95/245 on the trailer. Mark improved by two-tenths in round two, where his 5.68/260.26 (Top Speed) beat Al Hofmann. Unfortunately, he lost to McCulloch in the semifinals. In the first week of July, the team was in Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He set Top Speed during qualifying at 266.27. Oswald reached the final by running 5.75/254.23 in the first round over Jim White, who broke, and then he beat Darrel Amberson in the semifinal. This put him into the final against low qualifier Bernstein. The two had a great race, but Bernstein's 5.67/260 beat Oswald's 5.76/254 runner-up effort. RH | Also ran 5.428 and 5.449 at Ennis 10/87 and 5.492 at 87 Keystones. Confirmed 270.43 at Pomona Finals 87. Did the team run 276 somewhere this year? Direct drive or two-speed? Notes: Confirmed 5.337 at 277.00 at Seattle and Pomona Finals 1988. Also 5.378 from Indy 1988. Where was this 5.290/278 from? Photo from Milan, MI, 1988. | Oswald started the '88 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals where he qualified #6 with a 5.45. He beat Chuck Etchells in the first round, and in round two, a 5.49/262 beat a tire-smoking Kenny Bernstein. But in the semifinals, Mark got out of shape and shut off against Jim Head. The team then went to Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals where they promptly smoked the tires in the first round, and lost to Ed McCulloch. A week later, on March 20, they were at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.37/275.98 and in round one, defeated Bruce Larson. In the second round, a 5.78/264 beat Scott Kalitta. He moved into the finals by running a 5.44/270 over a tire smoking Don Prudhomme. But a final round 5.35/278 by Bernstein ended the day for Oswald. He made up for the loss by winning the IHRA Supernationals at DeSoto Dragway, Bradenton, on March 27. The race was originally slated to run on March 6, but it was rained out. Mark ran 5.62 and 5.66 to work his way into the final where his final round 5.67/249 took the victory over Kalitta's close 5.69/256. At IHRA's Texas Nationals, Mark ran well again. He ran 5.42/267 in the first round, and in round two, a 5.40/267.06 beat Tim Grose. But a consistent 5.41/266.03 in the semifinals lost to Mike Dunn's 5.39/275. Oswald made it into the semifinals at the next event as well, the NHRA Southern Nationals at Atlanta. Mark advanced past the first-round with a 5.67, and in round two, a 5.55/260 got around an out of shape Tom Hoover. But he lost to McCulloch's Low ET of the meet 5.52 in the semis. On May 1 they were at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Mark qualified #2 and in the first round, he advanced with a 5.83/260.11 when Etchells broke. In the semifinals, he fouled against Head. Mark got his first NHRA victory of the year at Memphis for the Mid-South Nationals on May 15. A 5.59 qualified #4 and be beat Larson in round one. A 5.55/268.73 (Top Speed) beat Grose in round two and in the semifinals, a 5.62/268 beat Head. In the final, he out drove McCulloch by running a 5.55/267 to win over the "Ace's" 5.54/262. A week later (May 22) he was back in the winner's circle at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. He stopped Hoover in the semifinals with a 5.64/261.17 and went on to win the event by running 5.65/259.51 in the final over Dale Pulde's 5.75/224 in Billy Meyer's car. On May 29, he made it as far as the semis at the NHRA Cajun Nationals. In his semifinal race, he hazed the tires and lost to Bernstein. At Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, they went out early when Oswald smoked the tires and crossed the centerline in the first round, against Pulde. Things went far better at the NHRA Grandnationals in Canada. Mark ran 5.47/266.98 to qualify #3, and then ran 5.59, 5.55/264, and a semifinal 5.49/267 over a fouling John Force to meet up with Prudhomme in the final. The "Snake" took the win with a 5.44/260, but it was still a good showing for the "Candies and Hughes" team. They followed it up with another runner-up finish at Milan, Michigan, for the IHRA Northern Nationals on July 10. Mark set Low ET and a new track record with a 5.52 at 256.11 in the first round, while beating R.C. Sherman and in the semifinal, he only needed a 6.00/178.64 to advanced over a tire smoking Pulde. In the final, it was Mark's turn to smoke the tires and he shut off to a 9.89/74.97 to lose to McCulloch's 5.54/265. A week later found the team at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.49/261.78 qualified #6. He beat Eric Reed in the first round, but he lost to the race's eventual winner Prudhomme, in round two.

Notes: At Pomona for the Winternationals, Mark didn't qualify all that well with a 5.44/269.13 fitting in the #11 spot. He improved to a first-round 5.34/274.05 over Ed McCulloch, but in the second round, he lost to Chris Lane's 7.17/246 to Mark's 7.50/170.71 in a troubled run for both drivers. He qualified much better at the next NHRA race, the Supernationals, where a 5.29/272.23 put him in the #3 spot. Mark made it into the semifinals before smoking the tires and losing to Bruce Larson. At the Gatornationals, the team again qualified #3 with a 5.34/271.41 getting the spot. Unfortunately, they lost to Art Hendey in the second round. A 5.55/260.86 qualified in the dreaded #9 position at the Southern Nationals setting up a first-round matchup against low qualifier Larson. Bruce triumphed over Oswald in that race. By the fifth race of the season, the Mid-South Nationals at Memphis, the team was getting antsy to win. A 5.36/275.06 qualified #4, and Mark ran 5.38 over Eric Reed in the first round. In the second round, he got a break when John Force broke at half-track and a 5.40/259 advanced into the semifinals to meet Don Prudhomme. In that race, a 5.41/272 beat Prudhomme's quicker 5.39, and the "Candies and Hughes" car was in its first final of '89. All good things come to an end, and in the final against Kenny Bernstein, the Probe broke, giving Kenny a single for the win. It was off to the Cajun Nationals on May 28 for the sixth stop on the NHRA tour. A 5.44/266.66 qualified #2 just behind Prudhomme. Mark beat a tire-smoking Force in the first round with a 5.52/264. A second-round 5.57 lost to McCulloch's 5.46. It was then off to National Trail for the Springnationals, where Mark qualified #5 with a 5.34/271.49. An even better 5.32 in the first round beat Frank Kramberger, but the car broke after his burnout against Tom Hoover in the second round. The tour then traveled to Canada for the Grandnationals. Oswald ran 5.51/253.95 to qualify #2. He beat R.C Sherman in the first round, with a 5.49/246.23 and a second-round 5.60/256.55 beat Force's 5.63/263. In the semi's, another 5.60/238.98 beat Hendey and set up another final round matchup against Bernstein. Oswald didn't break this time, but his 5.54/258.69 just lost to Kenny's 5.51/265. At Englishtown for the Summernationals, a 5.36 qualified #4. He beat Jerry Caminito in the first round, but against Don Gay Jr. in round two, the Probe broke. It was beginning to become a long winless season for the team when they rolled into Denver for the Mile High Nationals. They qualified #3 with a 5.59/253.09 and beat Gay Jr. in the first round and in round two a 5.64/249 beat Force's 5.70. In the semifinals against Bernstein, Mark beat him with a track record 5.50 at 258, putting himself in the final against Larson. In the final, Oswald ran a 5.62 but lost it on the starting line to Bruce's slower 5.66. The eleventh race of the season was the California Nationals on July 30. Once again, the team made it to the finals. A 5.40/274.47 qualified #4. He beat Mike Dunn in the first round, and in the second round, both he and Hendey smoked the tires with Oswald's 6.49/239.61 coming out on top. Mark pulled a driving job on McCulloch in the semifinals beating Ed's 5.47/270 with a 5.49/267.85. In the final, he ran Prudhomme, who had set Low ET and Top Speed (5.30/276.49). Mark picked it up in the final to a 5.36/274.72 but still lost to the "Snake's" 5.32/272. It was the fourth runner-up finish of the year for the team. The tour continued to Seattle for the Seafair Nationals. Mark qualified #8 with a 5.43/266.27 but lost to R.C. Sherman in the first round. Another first-round loss came at the next event, the Northstar Nationals. A 5.46/263.23 qualified #7. In the first round, the Probe spun the tires to a 6.12/248.07 and lost to Larry Camenzind's 5.94/212. The bad luck continued right into Indy for the US Nationals. The team qualified #5 with a 5.33/272.06, but upstart Scott Kalitta beat them in the first round. After losing in the first round at the last three events, the team rebounded somewhat at the Keystone Nationals at Maple Grove. Mark qualified #2 with a 5.21/283.10. A 5.29/265.09 advanced when Tom Hoover fouled in the first round. In round two, he backed up his qualifying marks for both ends of the NHRA record when he beat Tony McCallum with a 5.23/279.50. Unfortunately, Mark smoked the tires to a shut-off 8.86/87.20 loss to Force's 5.34/276 in the semifinals. At the Texas Motorplex for the Chief Nationals, a 5.19/280.19 (Top Speed) qualified #3. Oswald beat Mike Dunn in the first round, with a 5.24 and a second-round 5.29/273.39 beat Al Hofmann in round two. Mark finally got one back from Larson in the semifinal when his 5.23/281.60 beat Bruce's close 5.24/274. In the final, he met Prudhomme, and while Don blasted to a 5.26/269 victory, Mark smoked the tires to another runner-up finish. The team got its first #1 qualifying position of the year at the Fallnationals at Firebird Raceway with a 5.41 (Low ET) doing the deed. Things looked rosy until Mike Dunn put them on the trailer in the first round. It was back to Pomona for the season-ending World Finals, where a 5.28 (Low ET) at 279.41 got their second pole of the year. In the first round, he beat Hoover with a new NHRA Top Speed record of 283.28, but he ended his season in the next round against McCulloch when Mark spun the tires and lost to Ed's 5.56/264. Also, set the record at 5.214 at Maple Grove 9/89 and 5.298/283.10 National Records at 89 Supernationals. The 283.28 National Record was the fastest NHRA speed of the decade (second only to Scott Kalitta's 286.62 at IHRA Ennis 1988). Also, great 5.232 at 89 Chiefs was part of the quickest side-by-side pass (Bruce Larson 5.247). Also, 281.60 at Chiefs was half of the fastest side-by-side pass (Larson 274.72). Mark Oswald and the "Candies and Hughes" team had a good season in '89 despite finishing the season fourth in points. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: After Don Prudhomme and Kenny Bernstein switched to Top Fuel for the '90 season, everyone expected this team to dominate. Things didn't work out that way. Mark started '90 by qualifying #3 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.29/279.41 (Top Speed). He lost to Art Hendey in the first round. At Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals, Mark's 5.40/275.06 qualified #8. In the first round, he had a close race with Ed McCulloch that saw his 5.37/277.77 defeat Ed's 5.37/265. In round two, another 5.37 at 275.48 beat K.C. Spurlock's slightly quicker 5.36/276. Both he and opponent Bruce Larson had problems in their semifinal race, but Larson's tire-smoking 6.43/147 beat Oswald, who shut down to a 10.97/71.03. The next NHRA event was the Supernationals in Texas. Mark qualified #4 with a 5.32/282.22 (Top Speed). An even better 5.30/278.37 in the first round, beat Gary Densham, and he got a solo in round two when Tom Hoover could not show. Mark ran a wheelstanding 7.29 to advance. In the semifinals, his 5.41/283.10 lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.28/278. The team's next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. A 5.36/276.41 qualified #4, and a 5.63/231.24 in the opening round beat Frank Kramberger's 5.68/261. But Oswald lost to eventual winner McCulloch in round two. He then went to Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational. This was an eight-car show; his 5.35/278.12 (Top Speed) qualified #6. His times were not great, but Oswald made it into the final. He started by running 5.48/272.23 in the opening round to beat Jim White in the "Hawaiian." Both he and Larson smoked the tires in the semifinal, with Mark's 5.62/267.69 coming out on top over Bruce's 5.86/247. He faced John Force in the final, and the two put on a great race as both ran 5.43 (Oswald at 277.26), but Force crossed the stripe first for the victory. Atlanta was a race Oswald would rather forget. The car kept dropping cylinders on every pass. He "only" qualified #14 with a 5.64/277.34, and he was out after the first round as McCulloch's 5.35/267 beat his 5.48/268.81 and went on to win. But as bad as Atlanta had been, Memphis was the exact opposite. Mark qualified #7 with a 5.36/281.16, beating Johnny West in the first round. He had a close race with Spurlock in round two, where both ran 5.37 (Oswald at 278), but Mark crossed the line first. A 5.40/265 in the semifinals stopped Larson's 5.50, and Oswald found himself in the final against McCulloch. He got some payback from the last couple of losses to the "Ace" by running a 5.42/279.15 in the final over Ed's 5.47/265. Baton Rouge was the next stop on the NHRA calendar for the Cajun Nationals. Oswald qualified #3 with a 5.43/273.14. He beat Del Denton in the first round, and despite smoking the tires to a 6.85/145 in round two, he won when Neely fouled. But he smoked the tires once again in the semifinals and lost to Richard Hartman. He also made it as far as the semifinals at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #6 with a 5.44/272.06 and, in round one, beat Hartman's 5.52/260 with another 5.44 at 274.55. Larson fouled against him in round two, and Mark advanced with a 5.45/274.30. But in the semifinals, Oswald fouled against White. The team then went to Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals, where Mark's 5.45/268.97 qualified #4. Things went fairly well for the team. A 5.49 in the opening round beat Al Hofmann, and a second-round 5.47/267 beat Tom Hoover. Mark's driving in the semifinal got the car into the final as his 5.43/268.41 defeated Larson's 5.42/269. Oswald even had lane choice over Force for their final round meeting, but Mark had problems and shut down to 10.92/70.15 while Force won with a 5.40/267. Photo from Columbus 1989.

Notes: Won Winston Invitational in 1992. Made history in round one at Ennis, when Mark Oswald powered to the best Funny Car speed ever, 5.163/293.06, in beating Dale Pulde. Mark also went 5.161 at Seattle and 5.188/290.79 at Maple Grove. We think he drove the Petosa Bros. car exclusively starting in Gainesville (he definitely drove it there). The team qualified well at every event but suffered terrible consistency problems on race day, leaving them first or second-round losers for most of the year. We need to confirm that he did not run the In-N-Out Cutlass at any of the other late-season NHRA events.
