Notes: Jim was at the second OCIR All-Pro race in January. He qualified #3 with a 6.75, and in the first round, he advanced with a 6.86. In the semifinals, he ran a 6.73 but lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.71 in the Pisano & Matsubara Vega. He then went to Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. A 6.69/207.37 qualified #15 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he improved to 6.53/214.28 in beating Ira Hollensbe's 6.87/192. In round two, he beat Russell Long's 7.00/210 in Charlie Proite's new Charger with a 6.61/213.77. A third-round 6.55/216.34 beat Stan Shiroma's quicker 6.51/220 in the "Pacemaker" Vega. His ride ended in the semifinals, where Paoli smoked the tires and lost to "Jungle Jim" Liberman. After such a good run at Beeline, it was surprising to see Jim's name among the list of non-qualifiers at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals at 8.111/188.66. It should be noted that traction was an issue there as the low qualifier (Butch Maas) got the spot with a 7.181 and the bump was Ed McCullouch at 7.842! Jim then went to Lakeland for the IHRA Winternationals and qualified #2 with a 6.89. He failed to reach the finals. His next stop was at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, and once again, he was unable to qualify (Jim does not appear on the NHRA DNQ list - need to validate). On April 29, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. Paoli's 6.71 qualified #2 behind Dale Emery's 6.67 in the "Jeg's Camaro. His tire-smoking 7.63 almost lost to Frank Thurman in the opening round, but he got around him before the stripe. Jim got a solo in the semifinal and made an easy pass. He faced Emery in the final, and once again, he smoked the tires. This time there was no hope in driving around his opponent as Emery ran a stout 6.44/228 for both Low ET and Top Speed. The following week (May 6), he was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Nationals. His 6.72 qualified #5 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, he ran an easy 8.38 when Cliff Brown lost a supercharger. In round two, a strong 6.55/214 lost to an even stronger 6.34/227 by Pat Foster driving the Barry Setzer Vega. Surprisingly, Jim failed to qualify for the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail, but he was not alone as Al Begler and Al Hanna, among others, failed to qualify for the eight-car field. Next came his big win at the IHRA Northern Nationals. His 6.98 qualified #4, and in the opening round of eliminations, he beat Kenny Bernstein, who was driving the "LA Hooker" with a 6.64 (Low ET). Another 6.64/209 in round two beat Paula Murphy, and in the semifinal, he fell off to 6.72/209.30. That was still good enough to drop Joe Lee's 6.93/204. He faced the "killer car" of the day, the Setzer Vega driven by Foster in the final. Both made a good run, with Jim's 6.65 getting the win over Pat's 6.66. On June 17, Jim was at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals; he made it into round two before the eventual winner Bill Leavitt, stopped him with a 6.76. Jim also ran 6.64 at IHRA Northern Nationals 73. He qualified #9 at the NHRA Summernationals with a 6.572/222.22. He beat none other than Don Prudhomme in round one, 6.556/220.04 to 6.649/222.77. He took out Al Bergler in round two with a 6.550/213.27 to 6.84/184. Pat Foster got a bit of revenge on Jim when he took him out in the semis, 6.71/224 to Jim's 11.33/68. Jim was the second alternate at NHRA Indy with his best time of the year, 6.526/218.00. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. |

Notes: At the end of August, Parmer had his Pinto at Maple Grove. Two FC's and two Top Fuel dragsters were there to help raise funds for the "Jade Grenade" team to fix their dragster and ran it at Indy. Bob ran a best of 6.82/213.77 at the fundraiser. Bob was at Columbus on September 29 for the National Dragster Open. He qualified #7 in the eight-car field, and his troubled 8.27 in the opening round lost to Al Bergler's 7.07. |

Notes: Parmer was at Maple Grove in May for its Spring All-Pro Championships. It was an eight-car field, and in round one, his 7.21/187.11 beat Arnie Swensen's Vega. In the semifinal, he improved to 6.91/208.33 to defeat Lew Arrington's 6.94/192 in the "Brutus." Unfortunately, he hurt some parts on the run and could not run in the final. Bob ran well at Bristol in mid-June for the IHRA Springnationals. The sixteen-car show had 35 cars attempt to qualify, and Parmer qualified #8. A 6.74/173.74 advanced in round one, when Dodger Glenn broke, and in the second round, he ran 6.59/219.51 but lost to Al Segrini's 6.45/221. The team did not compete on the NHRA national event trail this year. |

Notes: Unusual Dart had a hemi in the back seat. Took the Unlimited Fuel crown at the '67 AHRA Springnationals in Odessa, TX, besting Al Vanderwoude's Flying Dutchman Dart in the final round with 8.95 in Spring '67. - RT | Most of us who hear the name Eddie Pauling associate him with Johnny Loper's cars. But way back when, Pauling drove this Dart. The car was built on a square tube chassis. The front end, doors, and trunk lid were fiberglass, but what remained of the body was steel. The front end was extended about 10 inches. A TorqueFlite transmission backed the rear-mounted early Hemi. On May 20, Pauling was at Phoenix for a best of three match race against Gas Ronda's SOHC Mustang. Eddie's 9.12/161.57 won the first race over Ronda's 9.16/148. But Gas evened up the score by running 8.92/163 to win their second race over the Dart's 9.00/163.04. Gas wrapped up the match by running 9.00 to beat Paulings' 9.10/161 in the final race. Pauling was at Irwindale on June 17 for an eight-car show. In the first round, his 8.76/170.45 lost to Dee Keaton's slower 8.85/161. |
