Notes: Eddie Pauling's new Cougar for '69 used a chassis built by Bill Brawner and himself. Bill built the 392 Hemi that was bored out slightly to 396. M/T rods and pistons were used, as well as an Isky cam. Mondello reworked the heads. Cragar supplied the blower drive and manifold. There was no transmission as the car was direct drive with a Hays triple disc clutch. The rear end was a '57 Olds with 3.90 gears. |

Notes: The Little Hoss series started as an Eddie Pauling driven, Bakersfield winning (where they ran a string of 6.0s!) Monza in 1977. Car tossed the body in winning the final round, reemerging several weeks later as the familiar Arrow. Ran the second five in the sport, 5.973, at Irwindale's 64 Funny Cars show, but the official Five-Second Club does not recognize that run. Eddie was at Baton Rouge early in June for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was an eight-car field, and his 6.50/220.04 qualified #7. His off-pace 6.91 fell to Jake Johnston's 6.61 in the "Pisano and Matsubara" Monza in the opening round. Shortly after that (June 12), he was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. His 6.17/210.28 qualified #4. Eddie beat Tom Hoover in the first round, but he pulled the parachute early in round two, costing him the race against Bob Pickett. Both had run 6.21, but Bob's came at 228 while Eddie's early chute resulted in a 198.67 speed. | Best NHRA times of 6.113/234.98 in qualifying #4 at Indy. The team ran the 5.97 at the 64 Funny Cars meet, Irwindale, CA, 4/09/77. |

Notes: Eddie was the early number one qualifier on Friday at the PRO Winternationals at Beeline, 1/14/77. He ran 6.24/231.95, which the local paper noted was the quickest car on the grounds for a time, even among the top fuel cars. (Jeb Allen eventually went 6.02/238.72 to lead the fuelers). Dale Emery was number two at 6.33, and Gary Burgin was number 3 at 6.42. The car ran well at Famoso for the Bakersfield March Meet. Pauling qualified with a 6.29, then when eliminations began, his times dropped two-tenths. An opening round 6.09 beat Henry Harrison and another 6.09 in round two beat a tire-smoking Don Prudhomme. Pauling set Low ET with a semifinal 6.03 that took out Gordie Bonin. The final was run late and he went up against Dale Pulde in the "War Eagle." It was an entertaining final as Pauling had the body blow off the chassis, and it seemed like Pulde had an easy win, but Pulde got out of shape and crossed the centerline. Eddie's 13.70 won the race over Pulde, who was disqualified. It didn't end there as tempers flared between Pulde's car owner, Mike Hamby, and track management. The following week (March 13), the team was supposed to race at the NHRA Gatornationals, but their win at Bakersfield had been a costly one. The team had used up one aluminum block, 40 pistons, and the Monza body. They didn't have enough parts to run at Gainesville. The Monza body became a Plymouth Arrow in April. |

Notes: Rookie Year, NHRA Champ in 1992 (winning 5 straight races). Also first funny car in the 5.0 zone with a 5.077 qualifier at Maple Grove 9/92, followed by a 5.076 in eliminations. | Cruz started the season by qualifying #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 5.20/287.08 (Top Speed). He beat Gordon Mineo in the first round, with a 5.22/286.89, but in round two, his Cutlass broke against Mark Sievers. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, he qualified #4 with a 5.34/279.06. A 5.33/269.78 beat Jerry Caminito in round one, but in round two his engine let go on the line against Johnny West. After breaking in the second round at the first two NHRA events, Pedregon did much better at Houston for the Supernationals. In qualifying, his 5.34/268.41 got him the #8 spot. He improved to 5.29/252.52 in the first round, over Chuck ETchell's quicker 5.26/272. Another holeshot in round two made his 5.18/276.66 a winner over John Force's 5.15/287. Then he really opened some eyes when he reset the NHRA National Record 5.10 at 272.89 in the semifinals to beat A Hofmann's 5.23/273. This put Cruz in the final against veteran, Mineo. A 5.14/284.62 backed up his 5.10 for the record and it was enough to give Pedregon his first NHRA Funny Car Eliminator victory. There was no sneaking up on the field for the NHRA Gatornationals after that, performance. At Gainesville a 5.26/275.98 qualified #4. His 5.20/285.08 beat Paula Martin's 5.37/271 in round one, while a second round 5.21/285.71 beat ETchell's quicker, but later 5.17/281. In the semifinals, crew chief Bernie Fedderly dialed in a little too much horsepower for Cruz's race against Force. As a result, Pedregon smoked the tires to a 5.31/242.78 loss to Force's 5.20/286. There were no points on the line at Rockingham for the NHRA Winston Invitational in April. Cruz set a track record 5.26 at 277.26 in qualifying #1 for the eight-car field. Unfortunately, the gremlins persisted and Pedregon broke in the first round. Atlanta was the next stop for the NHRA Southern Nationals. Once again, Cruz qualified #1 with a track record 5.15 at 282.57. It was strange to see his former crew chief, Fedderly helping Force's team for the first time. Pedregon advanced past Freddie Neely in the first round, with a 5.55/239.04 before smoking the tires in round two and losing to Force. He was low man at Memphis for the NHRA Mid-South Nationals with a 5.26/272.97. His 5.30/269.38 beat Norm Wilding, but he lost to Whit Bazemore in round two. It was then off to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #2 with a 5.24/277.69 behind Etchells' 5.23. But in round one, he set Low ET and Top Speed with track records of 5.17/288.00 to beat Jim Epler. A 5.21/286.62 beat Tom Hoover in round two while a semifinal 5.29/283.19 took out Del Worsham's close 5.31/275. This set up a final against Hofmann. Cruz fouled against Al in the final and shut off to a 6.57/132.29 while Hofmann got the victory with a 5.31/263. |

Notes: Pedregon started the season at Firebird Raceway's Test and Tune event in January He and crew chief Lee Beard made six passes with a best of 5.33/272.06. Tire shake killed three runs, but the other two were 5.52/257.28 and 5.39/269.29. At NHRA's season-opening Winternationals at Pomona, Cruz set Low ET of the meet in qualifying #1 with a 5.10/285.26. He eased to 5.87/170.68 in the first round, when Jerry Caminito broke, but in the second round, his 5.20/286.44 lost to Dale Pulde's 5.12/284 in Joe Pisano's car. The following week, he was in Arizona for the NHRA Motorcraft Nationals. Once again, he qualified #1, this time with a track record 5.07 at 284.18. He went on to win the race by beating Tom Hoover with a 5.13/288.00, Kenji Okazaki with a 5.13/289.01 (Top Speed), and in the semifinals, his 5.20/287.90 took out Del Worsham's 5.27/283. In the final, he faced Jim Epler, and Cruz won with a 5.21/263.31 over Epler's troubled 9.56/89.65. NHRA's next stop was at Houston for the Slick 50 Nationals. Cruz qualified #4 with a 5.14/286.16. Once again, Cruz ran well, running 5.15/279.50 in the opening round over Worsham and a 5.22/277.26 beat Chuck Etchells' identical 5.22/276 in round two. Unfortunately, he fouled away a 5.17/281.09 in the semifinals and lost to eventual winner John Force's 5.04/294. At the NHRA Gatornationals, a 5.20/285.71 qualified #6. He beat Caminito in the first round, with a 5.29/280.72, but a 5.27/250.83 lost to Force's 5.09/292 in round two. |

Notes: Pedregon started the season by qualifying low at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a track record 5.01 at 297.02 (Low ET and Top Speed). In round one, his 5.28/264.23 beat Tom Hoover. Unfortunately, in round two, his 5.25/283.01 lost to Dean Skuza's fireballing 5.22/285. He "only" qualified #12 at Firebird Raceway for the NHRA Arizona Nationals with a 5.35/273.30. The car "woke up" in eliminations by running 5.20/279.06 over Jim Epler's 5.61/190 in the opening round. He then shaved off another tenth in round two, where his 5.10/287.72 stopped Hoover. Cruz had a close race with Chuck Etchells in the semi-final that saw Pedregon's 5.18/278.63 get the better of Etchells' 5.20/247. He faced John Force in the final, which was another good race, but Force's 5.18/288 won over Cruz's 5.19/253.68. |

Notes: Cruz Pedregon started the NHRA season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. He set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 4.935/307.06. An opening round 5.08/296.06 beat Gary Densham, and in round two, his 5.12/299.10 took out Dale Pulde. He faced John Force in the semifinals, and Cruz smoked the tires and lost to John's 5.25/298. At the NHRA Arizona Nationals, his 5.17 qualified #4, but he fouled against Kenji Okazaki in the first round. Only sixteen cars showed at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals, so qualifying wasn't an issue - Pedregon's 5.16/300.30 got him the #8 spot in the field. In round one, he beat Whit Bazemore with a 5.21/268.89, followed by a second round 5.11/297.02 that advanced over a fouling Al Hofmann. But in the semifinals, he and Force had a good race that saw Force's 5.08/300 outrun Cruz's 5.13/301.30. |
