Notes: This restyled-for-'68 Skylark replaced the previous '66 iteration. It remained early hemi-powered. Pellegrini later recounted that the Romeo Palamides-built chassis was not a successful idea. The upper and lower rails were intentionally not welded together to allow for more chassis flex. The flex made it difficult to steer, and Pellegrini ended up barrel-rolling it at 175 mph at Rockford (now Byron) Dragway shortly after its debut. According to Pellegrini, he decided at that point he was a car owner, but no longer a driver. - RT |

Notes: Nelson Carter's first funny car-1968, Logghe Chassis, B&N Fiberglass Body, Don Mann tin, Keith Black 426, B&M Torqueflite and the beautiful green paint by Ron Perau's Imperial Kustoms. Ron was the initial driver, then Steve Bovan then Dave Beebe and so on. This car started out with Cragar S/S mags at all four corners, but eventually went to Halibrands all around. This photo is from Riverside. | Per Martin Broeders, who was involved with Carter for years, Ron Perau never made it past the NHRA licensing requirements phase. JMrn |

Notes: Mel was at York's US 30 on June 17 for an eighteen-car show. He warmed up with a 9.12/124.48 and, in the first round, of competition, ran 8.80/154.63, but it wasn't enough to beat Pat Minick's 8.17/173 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Shortly after that (July 2), he was at Lebanon Valley for a best of five match race against Bill Flynn. It just wasn't Mel's day as he lost to the Hemi Barracuda three straight. Flynn got a four-car holeshot in their first race, and his 8.82/152 buried Perry's 9.76/147. Mel just plain got outrun in the second race as Flynn's 8.90/158 beat the Chevy's, coasting 9.95/125. Mel broke on the line in the next race, and Flynn won the match by running a solo 9.08/147. Over the Labor day weekend, Perry was in Connecticut on September 4 for an FC show. His 8.78/136.36 beat Ben Cardillo's Cuda in the opening round. He ran Ben again in the second round, and his 8.99/144.23 easily beat the 'Cuda's 9.53/149. Confirm aspiration and fuel. |

Notes: AKA Super Hugger. Mel was at Capitol Raceway on August 16 for its Mr. Chevrolet race. His 7.93/184.80 advanced over a transmission-blowing Ron O'Donnell in the "Chapman" Camaro in the opening round of eliminations. In round two, he soloed with a 10.44/94.73 when Dick Harrell lost his brakes and could not stage. But in the semifinals, his 8.04/181.80 lost to eventual winner Bruce Larson's 7.90/182. Mel was at Bear Creek, Pa. for a best of three match race against Bob Fulp in the "Limefire" 'Cuda. In their first race, Perry's 7.98/168 beat Bob's 8.01/176. The 'Cuda broke on the line in the second race, and Mel won the match with a 7.77/180.11. |

Notes: Original pre-Internet draglist entry. Listed times from Drag Stat 1969. | Mel Perry had been running Chev Funny Car's for four seasons before this car was built. His sponsor was Norwood Chevrolet who stayed with him on the '69 car. Al Graeber's Speedway Engineering built the chassis and the Camaro body came from B&N. All the interior sheet metal work was the property of Al Bergler. His crew chief, Ken Zaborski, built the 427 Chevy that powered the car. He used Howards for the rods and the cam while the 7.5:1 pistons came from Venolia. East Coast Blower Service set up the 25% overdriven GMC 6/71 blower and it sat on a Cragar manifold. Cragar also supplied the blower drive. The 60-80% nitro was fed to the engine by a four port Hilborn injector. Perry qualified eighth with an 8.37 on February 16 at Miami-Hollywood's Winter Championships. He fouled against Pete Gates in the first round. He ran at Capitol's Mr. Chevrolet Invitational in May, winning his first-round race with a 9.11/170.13 over a fouling Bruce Larson. In the second round, his 8.41/189.46 lost to Frank Federici's 8.13/180. Mel had his roof blow off the car at Suffolk on July 12 while running a match race against Jim Liberman. He raced at Connecticut on September 8. A first-round 7.73/185.56 upset hometown hero, Bill Lawton (7.90/185) in the first round, but in the second round, he lost his driveshaft, giving Henry Garcia an easy ride into the semis. | Confirmed 7.965 ET at Englishtown 69. |

Notes: Mike Gagnon info. | Mel attempted to qualify at the NHRA Gatornationals, but he failed to make the show. He had a blower explode that ripped the roof off the Camaro's body. Mel was at Maple Grove on August 22 for the fourth NHRA Division 1 race. His opening round 8.62/157.89 advanced when Al Hanna broke. But he lost in round two. The next day he was at Suffolk for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, in the opening round, an off-pace 9.27/109.98 lost to Tom Sneden's 7.47/197. On Sept. 13, he was at Suffolk for the Dixie Drag Classic. While he failed to reach the final, he beat Shirl Greer in the first round, with a 7.52/189.46. In October, Mel installed a Clutchflite transmission in his Camaro. The first time out with the new combination was at Epping on October 25 for an eight-car show. He lasted until the semifinals, where he lost to Bill Flynn. |
