Notes: On May 23, Dick was at Irwindale for the NHRA Division 7 race. It was an eight-car show and in the first round, his 8.02/186.32 lost to Ray Alley's 8.00/185. Poll ran this car at the OCIR Funny Car 500 on May 30. He beat a sleepy Mert Littlefield (7.70/181) in the first round, with a 7.97/190.67. In round two, a 7.82/188.67 beat a tire-smoking Vic Morse. In the semifinal, his 7.94/174.08 fell to eventual winner Mike Snively's 7.51/188. On June 6, he was at Irwindale for the Tom Ferraro Benefit race. He fouled in the first round, against Don Hampton. A week later, on June 13, he was at Lions for the All-American Series race. He failed to qualify for the low eight, but Lions held a second Funny Car show for the non-qualifiers. Dick beat Jack Chrisman's 7.88/163 with a 7.63/190.27. Since his 7.63 was Low ET of the first-round, he got a solo into the final with a 9.55/159.29. In the final he ran Chrisman again who was reinstated when Leroy Hales broke. But in the all-Mustang final, Poll's car broke, giving Chrisman the win. In July, Irwindale held a 16-car show, but only 14 FC's showed up. Qualifying was easy so Dick ran an 8.90/112.21 for the #14 spot. He advanced past the first-round when Don Cook's Corvette broke. In the second round, a 7.94 beat Morse's 7.97. Unfortunately, he hurt the engine and was unable to return for the semifinals and Vic was reinstated. At the Irwindale Gold Cup Championships on August 1, he beat Chrisman in the first round, with an 8.26/180.72. A second round 7.91/190.66 beat Bob McFarland, but in the semifinal, an out of shape 8.05/160.70 lost to Dave Beebe's 7.56/176. |

Notes: John was at Cayuga early in May for its May Day FC Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in the first round, his 7.20/187.50 beat a completely sideways Willie Borsch. In the semi-final, his 7.00/212.76 lost to eventual winner Vic Cecelia's 6.65/219 in the "Telstar." He came back out later for a consolation race where his 7.94/191.48 beat Frank Oglesby, who broke. The 6.35/225 times from a magazine feature on John and his match race special. |

Notes: This team was tough and was able to surprise with a big number from time to time. Pott failed to qualify the "Mr. Norm" car at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. His 6.411 (speed unknown) was the second alternate. In June, Pott was in Detroit for the North American Grand Nationals. He had problems in the first round, but his 8.28 advanced as opponent Al Bergler shut off on the line. In the semifinals, his 6.64/209.78 beat Tom Prock's 6.70/200 in the "Detroit Tiger." He faced Tom McEwen in the final, and the "Goose" blew his engine while Pott picked up the victory with a 6.66. At Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals, his 6.29 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. He beat low qualifier Billy Meyer in the first round with a 6.27, but in the semifinals, his 6.95 lost to Kenny Bernstein's 6.57. The team qualified for the PHR Championships, which was pretty good considering that Bernstein, Dale Pulde, Tripp Shumake, Ron Colson, and others failed to make the show. Unfortunately, John lost early. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, Pott ran 6.19 early in qualifying, but, figuring that wasn't enough, he came back out and ran 6.139/231.36. That still wasn't enough, as he ended up as the first alternate for the field. That was the team's last NHRA national event of the year. Where did they run 236.22? | This car changed hands many times, eventually landing in Jim Wemett's garage. - Tim Simplot |

Notes: John was at Beech Bend on August 23 for the NHRA Eastern Regional race. A 6.22/208.81 qualified #4 in the eight-car field. He improved to 6.18/215.31 in the opening round to beat Rick Nutt, but in the semifinals, his 6.27/217.39 lost to the eventual winner Kenny Bernstein's 6.19/217. The "Sting" ran really well at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. John's 6.082 qualified #15, and he beat Tim Grose and Al Segrini in the first two rounds before falling to Raymond Beadle's 6.02/249 in the semifinals. Pott ran 6.23/229 in the loss. John was at Bristol on September 13 for the IHRA US Open. He qualified well in the eight-car field. In the first round, his 6.11 beat Roy Harris' 6.44. In the semifinals, a 6.07/234.98 beat a tire-smoking Dale Pulde. He faced Paul Smith in the final, and although John only ran 7.67/135.54, he still won the race when Smith crossed the centerline and was disqualified. The following week (September 20), he was at Houston International for the NHRA Western Regional. Only five cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car show, and John's 6.28/227.27 qualified #2. Surprisingly, in the first round, an off-pace 6.99/143.08 lost to Gary Burgin's 6.60/213. John's 6.082/236.22 at Indy were his best NHRA times of the year. |

Notes: Photo from Popular Hot Rodding Championships, Martin, MI, 1982. | This team picked up the pace in 1982. John drove Larry Coogle's "Sting" at both NHRA and IHRA events during the year and did quite well. The team missed the season opening NHRA Winternationals, but in March they showed up at Gainesville and qualified #3 with a 6.01/234.37. John beat Tom Hoover in the first round, with a 6.17/229.00. In the second round, he fell off to a 6.95/181.45 that lost to Tim Grose's 6.31/234. At Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals, he made it into the final before losing to Dale Pulde's 6.26/238 with an off pace 7.92/134. Atlanta held an eight-car show in early April and Pott was there. Unfortunately, he lost to Kosty Ivanof in the first round. John was back at Atlanta on April 25 for the NHRA Southern Nationals. It was another eight-car show and his 6.27/231.36 failed to make the field (fifth alternate). On May 2, at Rockingham for the Pro-Am Championships, John made it into the final at the second IHRA race in a row. The "Sting" set Top Speed at 245.90 and beat low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the first round, when the "Blue Max" driver got out of shape. In the semifinals, he got around a tire shaking Billy Meyer, putting him in the final against Kenny Bernstein. Pott got his second runner-up finish when Bernstein beat him with a 6.21. He was pretty disappointed when he failed to qualify at the next IHRA race, the Springnationals at Bristol. NHRA held its Cajun Nationals at Baton Rouge at the end of May and it was a tough field to crack as there were only eight spots available. John qualified #5 with a 6.14 which set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Don Prudhomme. It wasn't much of a race as John lost a rod shortly after leaving the line, and fell to Don's 6.10/242. At Columbus, the team's best of 6.34/226.13 was good for the fourth alternate spot at the NHRA Springnationals. Things went better the following week (June 20) at Norwalk for the IHRA World Nationals. A 5.98 qualified #5 in the eight-car field. Unfortunately, he lost to Beadle who set a 5.88 track record in beating him in the first round. During the early part of the season, the team was still running the Firebird body. Not sure when they changed over to the Omni body, but at Maple Grove on June 27 they were running the Omni at the Super Stock Magazine Nationals. Once again, John made it into the final and once again he was denied the win. This time Pulde got him with a 6.33 as John got crossed up and shut off to 10.65. In July, Pott was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. He lasted until the semifinals before eventual winner Beadle’s 6.02/246 stopped his 6.22/220.58 from advancing. |

Notes: Ron Potter had Don Hardy build him a new Mustang Funny Car for '72 on a 116" chassis. It took a full year to build. The body was a product of J&E Fiberglass, while the 1,600 hp 426 Hemi came from Ed Pink. It used a half-inch stroker crank from Moldex. The rods were from M/T and supported 6.5:1 Forgedtrue pistons. The cam was from Crower. The Donovan valves were 2/1/6" on the intake and 2/1/8" for the exhaust. Cragar supplied both the blower drive and manifold, and the GMC 6/71 was prepared by Pink. An Enderle injection unit fed the 88 to 90% nitro mix. A Lenco two-speed transmitted the power to a Detroit Locker rear with 4.10 gears. It was painted gold and red by the Nolan brothers. The total weight was 1,860 lbs. Potter was at Indianapolis early in April for a best of three match race against Larry Arnold, who was driving the "Kingfish." There was no traction as it was still cold. The traction was so bad that Arnold won the first race with a 9.54. He also scored the next win at 7.28 to win the match. The two came out for a final run, and while Larry was crossing the centerline at 7.98, Potter took the win at 8.03/196.06. At NHRA Columbus, Ron qualified #15 at 7.21 (speed unknown). He lost to Butch Maas in round one, 6.84/191 to 7.24 (speed unknown). At the 1972 NHRA Summernationals, Ron qualified ninth with a 6.733/216.34 and upset low qualifier Phil Castronovo in the first round. Ron won the coin flip for lane choice and put Phil in the bad lane; he ran another 6.73/214.28 to beat Phil's 7.00/206. Ron fouled against Don Schumacher in round two and ran 8.22/118. He was the third alternate at NHRA Sanair (times unknown). That was his final NHRA national event of the year. Listed ET and Speed came from an October 1972 DRUSA article on the car. |
