Notes: Mike Gagnon information. Pulde was driving this car in August when he set a 7.45 track record at the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Great Meadows, NJ. He ran that ET in the first round, at 191.48 in beating Kelly Chadwick's 7.58/187. The two cars met again in the second round with the roles being reversed when Chadwick's 7.48/185 beat Pulde's 7.85/187.50.

Notes: The '71 Pinto was the team car to a '71 Mach 1 driven by Henry Harrison. With trick titanium Woody chassis, the cars were somewhat lighter. Although they started with Ford motors, both ended up with Hemis early in the year. Harrison qualified the Mach 1 low at '71 Indy (6.54), but Pulde eventually made the final while running 6.80s, losing to the Ace as the Pinto went up in flames. (Did Dale run a 6.7 against a fouling Dick Rosberg in round two? All his other runs were in the 6.80s, including a 6.819 in qualifying). In '72, the Pinto was painted red, and the Mach 1 was replaced by a blue Vega. | Pinto ran 223 at Minneapolis 71. - Dale Pulde, 7/3/15 | Mickey Thompson believed that the car's body should match the engine underneath. So, when the '71 season started, both his cars were using the Boss 429 engine. Of course, the motor used M/T rods and pistons. Howards supplied the cam. A Lenco two-speed fed the power back to Quick-change rear end designed and built by Mickey Thompson. The Pinto was unusual as it used a titanium chassis. In January, the Pinto was still using the Boss 429 engine at the Lions AHRA Grand American race. Dale qualified the car #2 among the "seeded" machines. But in the first round, Dale got out of shape and crossed the centerline, handing the win to Richard Tharp in the "Blue Max." The car failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Pulde did qualify at Beeline for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Bob Harris in the first round, with a 7.79, but a second-round 7.65/186.72 lost to Dick Rosberg's 7.36/191 in the "Fighting Irish" Camaro. At the Bakersfield March Meet, the team took an early loss when Dave Condit, driving the "L. A. Hooker," beat Dale in the opening round. Shortly after this, Pulde was at OCIR for an eight-car show. He qualified #5 and faced Condit again in the first round, with the same results: his 7.20/206.89 lost to Condit's 6.87/216. The Boss 429 powered car was able to get a win when Pulde drove it to victory over an eight-car field at Lions on March 20. A first-round 7.02/205.47 got around a sideways Gene Conway, and in the semifinals, Pulde had to rerun Conway after he got reinstated on the "break rule." Once again, Pulde led him down the track, this time running 7.06/208.33 (Top Speed) over Gene's 7.12. He faced the always tough Dave Beebe driving Nelson Carter's "Super Chief" in the final. Dale's times in eliminations were two tenths better than Beebe had been running, but in the final, both ran 7.26 (Dale at 206.89), with the M/T car getting the win. On April 18, Dale was at West Palm Beach for the Pro-Am Championships, AHRA's third Grand American race. Dale ran 7.85 in qualifying, and he even managed to beat Gene Snow in the second round, where they both ran 7.29. But in the semifinals, his 7.53 lost to eventual winner Art Higginbotham's 6.94. Early in May, Dale was at York for the Super Stock Magazine Championships. A quick-leaving 7.34 beat Conway's 7.23 in the first round, but he got out of shape in round two and shut down to 11.67 in a loss to Tim Kushi's 7.20. The car was having trouble just qualifying for the shows. Even with the win, the car was not up to speed, and shortly after this, a Hemi took the place of the Boss 429.

Notes: Dale Pulde drove this car at Lions during the "Last Drag Race." Dale qualified #12 (times unconfirmed) but broke against Don Prudhomme in the first round. The car was painted yellow in 1973 and became the Mickey Thompson "Revelleader" driven by Butch Mass. The Bob Snyder photo is from the Lions "Last Drag Race" and shows the car in primer.

Notes: Pulde first drove Mickey Thompson's Grand Am at St. Louis in early May. He made his debut in the car a successful one as he won over an eight-car field, stopping Ronnie Runyan's Chevy-powered Vega in the final. Shortly after this, he was at the AHRA Grand American at Green Valley, but he lost to eventual winner Don Prudhomme in round two. He was at the AHRA Grand American at Dragway 42 on May 24, but the car broke in the first round, against Jim Nicoll. Pulde went to Century 21 Raceway in Denver for the AHRA Springnationals on June 3. He used an Ed Pink-built stock-stroke 426 Hemi for this race, and it paid off. Dale beat Ron O'Donnell in the first round, while a quick-leaving 7.40 in round two beat Rob Williams better 7.34. He picked up to 6.77 in the semifinals over Raymond Beadle. This set up a final-round meeting with Art Ward. Dale took the victory with a 6.81/201.79. He was also declared the winner at a four-car show at Tri-City. He won all three of his races and ran a best of 6.68/216 over Gary Bolger, Kenny Safford, and Dick Rosberg. At the Rockford Manufacturers Meet, Pulde showed that he could drive by beating Don Schumacher's quicker 6.66 in round two with a 6.75. But in the third round, he beat Shirley Muldowney, but then the motor let go, and the car went up in flames. Pulde got the car stopped, and he managed to get out. The Grand Am was badly burnt, but Dale was OK. It didn't take Mickey long to fix the car, as on August 5, the team was at St. Louis for the AHRA Gateway Nationals. It was an easy field to qualify in as Dale's 7.46 qualified #13. He beat Gene Snow in the first round, setting up a round two meeting with Prudhomme. Pulde tried hard, but his 6.72 lost to the "Snake's" 6.51. At the AHRA National Challenge race, Dale ran 6.68/217.39 to qualify #14 in the 32-car field. In the first round, he picked up to 6.63 over Pat Foster in the "Barry Setzer" Vega. In the semifinals, he lost to Prudhomme. The following week (September 3), he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA US Nationals. A 6.404/223.32 qualified #6 in the sixteen-car show. Impressive considering that almost 50 cars attempted to qualify. Unfortunately, an off-pace 6.905/225.56 in the first round, lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.62. Pulde was at Fremont on October 14 for the AHRA World Championships. It was a sixteen-car field, and his 6.43 qualified #4. A 6.45 in the opening round beat Gene Snow's off-pace 7.24, and he picked up to 6.37 in the second round to defeat Sush Matsubara's 6.45. Unfortunately, the Grand Am was shut off on the line for leaking oil in the semifinal. Pulde had to watch as Gerry Glenn made a solo to advance into the final. Shortly after that, he was at Irwindale's East/West Funny Car Championships. Pulde smoked the tires hard in the first round, where his 10.54 lost to Prudhomme's 6.74. Ran 6.45 at Bristol. Where did the team run 231.95?

Notes: The Grand Am was getting a repaint by Bill Carter before the start of the season. While the team did not race at the AHRA Winternationals, Pulde qualified #2 at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals with a 6.35/222.77. He beat Mike Mitchell in the first round, with a 6.44/217.39, but in round two, he smoked the tires and shut off to 9.79/79.29 in a loss to Dale Emery's 6.46/223 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. Early in March, he was at Amarillo for a best of three match against Gene Snow. The Pontiac won all three races with times of 6.80,6.71 and 6.76. Snow was not far off as his best was 6.72. Pulde's best speed was 203. The team also did not race at the NHRA Gatornationals. On March 23, the M/T car was at Irwindale's Fox Hunt race. It was an eight-car field, and Pulde's 6.66 qualified #6. He the Leroy Goldstein, who was driving the "Mr. Ed" Satellite, had a really close first-round battle that saw Dale's 6.93/215.82 defeat Leroy's similar,6.93/210. He slowed to 7.08/191.89 in a loss to eventual winner Bob Pickett's 6.69/217 in the "Lil Demon" in the semifinal. He won the Seattle Opener in April, stopping Twig Zeigler's 6.48/219 in the final with a 6.49/220. In June, Pulde was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. He qualified #11 and an off-pace 7.42/157.61 in the opening round lost to Kosty Ivanof's 6.61/192. The following week (June 14), he was at Byron's Manufacturer's Meet. It wasn't a good outing. His 6.85/191.08 fell to Tom McEwen's 6.86/201 in the first round, and in the second, the car caught fire in his race against Denny Savage. A valve cover gasket had failed, and oil got onto the headers causing the fire. Dale got it stopped ok, and there was little damage other than scorched paint. Not long after that, he was in Connecticut for an eight-car show. A 6.73/209.30 beat Fred Goeske's 6.90/210 in the opening round, but the car broke and could not run after that. They did not run at either the NHRA Summernationals or the Grandnationals, but they were at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Pulde ran 6.44/220.04 to qualify #7. Despite improving to 6.36/220.04 in round one, he lost to Pat Foster's 6.31/221 in John Lombardo's Vega. The next stop was at Ontario Motor Speedway for the NHRA World Finals. Until this time, the car was not setting the world on fire as far as its performance went, but this race changed all that. Dale ran 6.38/224.43 to qualify #6. In the first round, he improved a bit, running 6.33 at just 201.79 to beat Pickett's 6.87/175. Everything changed in round two; his outstanding 6.16/233.76 (Low ET and Top Speed) dumped Don Prudhomme's 6.49/178. This changed everything for Shirl Greer, who had been fighting with Prudhomme for the points championships. Pulde's beating the "Snake" gave Greer the hard-fought title. In the semifinal, Dale banged out another stout number, a 6.17/233.76, but he was late off the line, and he finished second best to Dave Condit's 6.19/226 in the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. Condit would go on to win the race. A week later (October 20), Pulde went to Fremont for its National Open. It was an eight-car field. The M/T Pontiac was running well there as well as he set Low ET and Top Speed in the opening round with his 6.38/228.21 beating Prudhomme's 6.41. Beating the "Snake" two weeks in a row was pretty much unheard of. Pulde lasted to the final, where he was to face Roger Garten in the "Warhorse" Mustang. But Dale had a supercharger explosion on the line, and Garten won the rave with a 6.61. Irwindale held its Team Funny Car Championships the next week, and Pulde ran well. A 6.42/205 beat Snow in the opening round. He then lost to Tom Hoover in his second race. Garten fouled against him in his third race. Set new world record for funny cars at 1974 Supernationals / World Finals at Ontario: 6.16/233.76. - RT | Yellow, red, black versions. Also was painted in red this season (raced at Indy '74 in that livery). - CS | Ran 6.44 at Fremont, 6.35 at Pomona, 6.36 at Indy.

Notes: Dale Pulde sure drove for a lot of teams in '75. Near the end of July, he jumped behind the wheel of the "Plueger and Gyger" Mustang. His first event with the car was at the 32-car Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships at Portland. Considering it was his first time out with the car, he did great. A first-round 6.55 beat the car that he would soon be driving at the Nationals, Larry Christopherson's "Arizona Wildcat" Vega at 6.61. In his second race, Dale's 6.54/207 beat Paul Radici. His times were not good enough to reach the final, but he was familiarizing himself with the ride. His second time out with the car came on July 30 at the Funny Car Spectacular in Edmonton, Alberta. He suffered a first-round loss to Kenny Goodell, but then ran 6.91/188 in his second race to beat Terry Capp. An off-pace 7.19 in his third race lost to John Collins' 6.97 in Tom McEwen's second car. The following week, the team was in Seattle for the Seafair Funny Car Championships. It was a big 32-car show, with all cars running three races, and the two Low ET cars advancing to the final. Pulde beat Don Rae in the first round with a 6.71/201, but in the second round, he lost to Twig Zeigler. He was unable to race his third round because the track had an 11:00 pm curfew. His times were not good enough to advance into the final. Dale returned to the Plueger & Gyger machine for the NHRA World Finals. He qualified #8 at 6.316/219.54, but lost in round one to a John Lombardo holeshot, 6.291/229.00 to 6.216/223.88.

Notes: While still partners and running the "Eastern Raider" Pinto in 1974, Al Hanna and Joe Mundet commissioned Rollie Lindblad to build them a new Mustang II as a replacement for the old car. The new Mustang II made its debut in October at the 1974 NHRA Supernationals/World Finals at Ontario Motor Speedway with Al Hanna driving. In late '74 or early '75, there was a split in the partnership when Joe Mundet decided to move to California, and Al Hanna returned to Connecticut. Joe kept the new car and hired Dale Pulde as his driver, while Al continued campaigning the old Pinto; both cars kept the name "Eastern Raider." So, at the beginning of 1975, there were two "Eastern Raiders": the Connecticut-based Pinto and the California-based Mustang II. Dale Pulde was successful early in '75 with the western "Eastern Raider" Mustang II. After not qualifying at the NHRA Winternationals (first alternate at 6.504/211.76), he went on to win the Bakersfield March Meet. He qualified fourth at 6.39/208.81 and ran ETs of 6.63, 6.46, and 6.71 before beating Don Prudhomme in the final. Dale used a 6.53/196.63 to defeat Don's off pace 7.17/141.28. | Dale finished second in 1975 IHRA points to Raymond Beadle. But he drove Larry Christopherson's Arixona Wildcat Vega for at least some of those races. Dale was the fifth alternate at NHRA Columbus (no times available), but we need to confirm which car.

Notes: Dale Pulde drove the car in late '75 and early '76. Chapman Automotive ran an iron block 426, then switched to Donovan. Pulde started his season at Fremont for the Nitro Bowl race. All cars made three runs there. In his first race, his 6.87/155.44 lost to Ed McCulloch's 6.60/218. He solo'ed in the second round with a 6.53, and in the third, he smoked the tires to a 7.19 loss to Tommy Ivo's 6.66. He also competed at the Irwindale Grand Premier race, where he qualified #16 with a 7.94. Unfortunately, he broke on his burnout in the opening round, giving eventual winner Bob Pickett a solo into round two. Dale qualified #12 at Pomona, 6.316/199.11, but lost in the first round to Jake Johnston when he lost a blower. That was Dale's last NHRA national event appearance until the World Finals, where he showed up in the Plueger & Gyger Mustang.

Notes: Consistently fast machine with a stock stroke motor. Won 1977 IHRA Dixie Nationals and World Nationals. Set 245.23 NHRA Record at Martin, MI on 8/77. Stood through 1979, at least. Dale ran 6.24 at Pomona, 6.29 at Columbus, 6.36 at Englishtown, and 6.16 at Indy. | If I had to choose the season Pulde was most successful, it was a toss-up between '77 and '85. It would go to this "War Eagle" car for sentimental reasons. Pulde started the '77 season at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where he qualified #3. A 6.25 in the first round beat Jake Johnston, but he lost to Gary Burgin in round two. He went to the Bakersfield March Meet, where he ran 6.24 to qualify and finished runner-up to Eddie Pauling in Johnny Loper's Monza. The final was very interesting as Pauling had his Monza's fiberglass body come up the chassis, and he ran 13.70. Pulde had been high-tailing his out-of-shape car to an 8.55 but was said to have crossed the centerline and was disqualified. There was almost a fight as crew chief Mike Hamby argued with track personnel and Pauling about the finish. Mike said the car touched the line but did not go over it. Regardless, the decision stood. Another runner-up finish came at Rockingham on May 1 for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Dale set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.14/234.37 before losing to Ken Safford in the "Mr. Norm" car in the final. He won the NHRA Division 3 points race at Indianapolis and the IHRA Dixie Nationals, where he set Low ET at 6.24 before beating Tom McEwen in the final. Another win came his way at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race held there. He beat Chuck Finders in the final with a 6.22/236.22 (Top Speed). His next win came at the IHRA World Nationals at Amarillo on June 5. He had beaten Jerry Boldenow and Safford to reach the finals, where he stopped Ray Sherman for the title. Bristol was the team's next stop for the IHRA Springnationals. Pulde qualified #2 with a 6.45. Another 6.45 at 227.27 beat Safford in the opening round, and in round two, his 6.39/222.22 beat Denny Savage's 6.42/224. In the semifinals, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed with a 6.28/233.76, covering Johnny White's ailing Mustang. He went up against Larry Fullerton in the title round. Fullerton's Mustang broke, and Pulde legged it to 6.30/233.76 for yet another win. It was off to Union Grove for the IHRA Summernationals on July 4. A 6.33 qualified #2, but in the first round, he and Fullerton both smoked the tires, with Larry's 8.23/152 winning over Pulde's 9.45/107.91. The following week (July 10), the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde only qualified #14 with a 6.36/234.98. In the first round, his 6.46 lost to Sherman's 6.33. Two weeks later, Pulde was at Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he reset the IHRA Funny Car speed record to 241.28. The funnies were flying here, and Dale qualified #2 with a 6.21. He then beat Shirl Greer and Tom Prock to reach the final, facing Burgin. The two had an amazing race, with Pulde running 6.09/241.28 only to lose to Burgin's 6.08. He made up for his runner-up finish by winning the fourth NHRA Division 3 race held at Byron Dragway on July 31. He qualified with a 6.80/222 and then set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.37/235.60 (track record). In the final, all he needed was a 6.67/191 to beat a tire-smoking Bill Pryor at 7.22/194. That was followed by a win at Englishtown's Eighth Annual Funny Car Race of Champions on August 4. All ten cars were to make two runs, with the two lowest ET cars meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.47/234 to beat Gordon Mineo in his first race, and a Low ET and Top Speed of the meet 6.34/236 beat a fouling Burgin in his second race. His final-round opponent was Arnie Swensen, who had gotten the second-lowest ET with a 6.42. Dale got the victory with another strong run of 6.35/235. A couple of days later (August 7), he was at Atlanta Dragway for the IHRA Nationals. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field and lasted until the semifinals before the car broke on the line, advancing eventual winner Dale Emery into the final. A week after that (August 14), he was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, where he reset the NHRA Funny Car speed record to 245.23. It was another sixteen-car field, and Pulde set Low ET and Top Speed in the first round, with a 6.00/247.93 over John Pott. He "slowed" to 6.20/240 in round two to beat Ron Colson's 6.52 in the "Hawaiian," and a semifinal 6.13/245.23 beat Bob Pickett's 6.21. In the final, he went up against Burgin. Pulde had difficulties and slowed to a 15.22 in a runner-up finish to Burgin's 6.61/231. Dale qualified #1 with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.29/240.00 at Rockingham for the IHRA US Open Championships on August 21. But he boiled the tires in the second round and lost to Emery, who would win in Mike Burkhart's Camaro. Pulde qualified #8 at Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals, but he fell off to 6.56/225.56 in the first round and lost to Al Segrini's 6.39/225.

Notes: Beautiful car. Despite stock stroke motor, set Top Speed everywhere it went. Photo from Gainesville, FL-1978. | After a great '77 season, the '78 season was very humbling to Dale Pulde and Mike Hamby. They purchased a new car just because of all the runs they put on their last one. The car came from Plueger and he had changed his chassis jig so that the engine sat higher and the frame was narrower. According to Pulde, “he never liked this car.” It was very hard on parts. Pulde had also purchased 200 sets of bad oil rings from a manufacturer that were killing the cylinder walls. Despite the setbacks, he did win his first NHRA National event this season. Their season started badly when they failed to qualify at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. But things turned for the better at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. Dale ran 6.29/241.93 (Top Speed) to qualify #3. An opening round 6.35/224.43 beat Tom Hoover and in round two his 6.37/234.37 beat Tripp Shumake's 6.44. Another 6.37 at 236.84 beat Don Prudhomme's 6.54/212 in the semifinals. He faced Billy Meyer in the final and Dale picked up his first NHRA victory with a 6.42/234.37 over Meyer's 6.52/213. Hamby claimed that they "never had the valve covers off" after the win. It looked like it was the start of a great season when they went to Darlington the following week (March 19) for the IHRA Winternationals and won that too. The track was bad and Dale's 6.88/221.67 qualified #1 for the eight-car field. A 6.49/224 in the first round, beat Les Cassidy while a semifinal 6.44/228.42 beat Larry Fullerton's 6.97/208 in the "Trojan Horse.” He ran alternate Frank Oglesby in the final and won easily with Low ET and Top Speed at 6.35/229.00. The team then went to Seattle in April for its opening race of '78 and won that too. A final round 6.49 beat Tommy Ivo's 6.64. Pulde also set Top Speed at 231. The next day he won the Portland Opener. Once again, it was Pulde against Ivo and this time they both smoked the tires, but Pulde's 6.96 beat Ivo's 7.23. Earlier, Dale had set Low ET and Top Speed at 6.38/233. At Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships, Dale set Low ET and Top Speed in qualifying #1 with a 6.35/233. A first-round 6.59/223 beat Murf McKinney and in round two, his 6.49 advanced when Jimmy King fouled. He soloed with a tire-smoking 11.27/79 in the semifinals when Dennis Lockaby failed to show. But in the final, Dale had problems and shut off against Denny Savage who went on to win with a 7.12/223. In May, the "War Eagle" was at Blaney for a four-car show. Dale ran 6.48 and 6.45/217.06 (Low ET and Top Speed) while beating Shirl Greer and Fullerton. He was declared the winner of the event. On May 21, the team was in Atlanta for the IHRA Dixie Nationals. Pulde qualified #1 for the sixteen-car field with a 6.32, but he was upset in the first round, when Savage's 6.26 beat his 6.35. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. A 6.29/232.56 qualified #11, but Dale fouled against Gary Burgin in the first round. The following week (June 18) found the team at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #7 with a 6.51, but picked up to a 6.33/231.95 in the first round, to beat Larry Gould's SOHC-Ford powered car. A solo 6.53 advanced in round two when Roger Lindamood broke on the line. But once again, it was Savage who stopped Pulde in the semifinals with a 6.11 to Dale's 6.32. Early in July, Pulde was at Edgewater for the NHRA Division 3 race. Unfortunately, he was late off the line in the first round, and his 6.72 lost to Fullerton's 6.75. The team was down after not qualifying at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. That was followed up by a so-so performance at the IHRA Northern Nationals at Milan. Dale’s 6.40 qualified #4 in the eight-car field, but a first-round 6.69/200.04 lost to Lindamood's 6.64/213. Another surprise was the team's failure to qualify for the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan. The team rebounded by winning the IHRA US Open at Rockingham on August 20. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.46 and then he beat Lindamood and Pete Miner (with a 6.48) to reach the final against Pete Williams in the "Chi-Town Hustler." Dale got out first in the final and his 6.52/235.60 (Top Speed) beat Williams' 6.51. | Best NHRA times of 6.198 at Indy and 241.93 at the Gators. Twice ran 6.29 as well. Did Dale go 6.15/247 somewhere this year?

Notes: The team sold their '78 car and borrowed the '77 car to run at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals. Unfortunately, the team failed to qualify. The new car was ready for the NHRA Gatornationals, where it was awarded the "Best Appearing." It didn't run too bad either, as Pulde qualified #13 with a 6.39/228.42. But he smoked the tires in the opening round and shut off to 16.30-42.69 in a loss to Billy Meyer's 6.35/239. The following week, the team was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. Pulde "only" qualified #5 in the eight-car field, setting up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Beadle smoked the tires in their race, and Dale ran 6.32 to advance. He improved to 6.21 in the semi-final to beat Tripp Shumake's 6.82. He faced Paul Smith in the final, and Pulde got his first win of the year with his 6.73/230.17 beating Smith's 6.72/221. He also made it into the final at the next IHRA race, the Dixie Nationals held in Atlanta. There he lost to Kenny Bernstein in the final. He did not compete at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. Bernstein stopped him again at the next IHRA race, the Pro-Am Championships at Rockingham. This time it happened in the first round. Pulde overpowered the track, and his 6.72/232.55 lost to Bernstein's 6.19/232. He qualified #4 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 6.17/231.95. An off-pace 6.80/190.67 in the first round lost to Ron Colson's 6.49/228 in the "Hawaiian." Dale was much happier at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals. His 6.27 "only" qualified #4. Both he and Frank Oglesby smoked the tires in round one, but Pulde's 6.85 came out on top. He beat Beadle's 6.87 in the semi-final with a 6.49. In the final, he faced Bernstein. Kenny slept, and his 6.31/223 lost to Pulde's 6.47/234.98. At the end of June, he was in Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals. It was another eight-car show, and he qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Bernstein. This time Kenny fouled against him. Pulde then lost in the semi-final. A good year with a lot of qualifying success and some round wins. Best times at NHRA Indy in qualifying at 6.084/239.36. Stock Stroke motor. | 6.11 NHRA Englishtown NJ 7/79 lost to Beadles 6.08 quickest side by side FC race

Notes: Stock stroke motor. | Dale started the '80 season by winning the NHRA Winternationals at Pomona. He qualified #8 with a 6.12/238.09, and another 6.12 won his first-round race over Jim Dunn. In round two, he beat Hank Johnson with a 6.21. In the semifinals, he beat Kenny Bernstein and moved into the final against Ron Colson, who was driving the "Hawaiian." Dale won his second NHRA National event with a 6.25/238.72 that beat Colson, who crossed the centerline. He survived until the semifinals at the Bakersfield March Meet, where his 6.31/212.26 lost to Don Prudhomme's 6.04/233. The "War Eagle" was voted "best-appearing car" at the NHRA Gatornationals, and Pulde proved that it could go too by qualifying #7. His 6.13/232.55 advanced in the first round when Gordie Bonin crossed the centerline. He picked up to 6.07/239.36 in round two to beat Paul Smith. He faced Prudhomme in the semifinals, but an oil leak developed on the line, and he had to shut off. The following week (March 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA Winternationals. It was an eight-car field, and Dale's 6.48 qualified #5. Once again, he ran well, beating low qualifier Smith in the first round and working his way to the final, where he faced Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." Dale had problems and shut down to an 11.52 while Beadle motored to the victory with a 6.06/237. It was pretty impressive that he at least made it into the semifinals at all these races. His next stop was at Rockingham for the IHRA Pro-Am Championships. Pulde had an interesting qualifying run. He started to go into a wheelstand, and instead of easing off the throttle, he just shifted it into high gear to get the front wheels back down onto the track. When he did that, the fire extinguisher came loose and cracked him in the forehead. So, on that pass, he qualified #4 with a 6.14, and to boot, he got a nice-sized bump on his forehead. In the opening round of eliminations, he faced Shirl Greer, and both of them went up in smoke, but Pulde's back-peddling 6.35/221 beat Greer's 6.90/181. In the semifinals, he and opponent Billy Meyer went up in tire smoke again, but once again, Pulde came out on top. In the final, he faced Tripp Shumake in Johnny Loper's Arrow. Unfortunately, the "War Eagle" busted a rear end, and Tripp made an easy pass for the victory. Things didn't go as well at the NHRA Cajun Nationals, where his best of 6.19/243.24 (Top Speed and a new track record) failed to qualify. He was at Maple Grove for the Jungle Jim Memorial race in May. It was a six-car show with all the cars making two passes each and the two lowest ET meeting in the final. Dale ran 6.27/229.00 in his first race to beat Gary Burgin's 6.43/229, and a slightly quicker 6.26/232.55 won his second race over Bruce Larson. His ET was good enough to transfer into the final, where he would face Roy Harris, who had run 6.13 for a final-round appearance. But Roy had trouble in the semifinal, blowing an engine and turning the car into a fireball. He and his crew did an amazing job swapping out the engine and getting the car ready for the final with Pulde. But the final saw Harris get out of shape and cross the centerline while Dale improved again with a 6.24/222.22 for the victory. He did not run at Bristol for the IHRA Springnationals as it was rained out until May 25. The next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Dale qualified #2 with a 6.14/238.72, right behind Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" at 6.12. He beat Bernstein in the first round, but in round two, he got out of shape against Ed McCulloch and shut off. The mile-high air of Denver gave the team some problems in qualifying for the eight-car show at the NHRA Mile High Nationals. Dale was one of many that failed to qualify. In July, the "War Eagle" was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. Pulde's 6.10 qualified #7. He beat John Collins in the opening round before being shut off on the line in round two with a fuel leak. A week later (July 20), he was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals. The team's performance was off here as they only qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show and, in the first round, lost to John Pott in the "Mr. Norm" car. On July 27, Pulde showed up at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.12. In the first round, he took an easy win over alternate Don Nieves, who was in for Tom McEwen. In the semifinals, his 6.37 beat Collins. This set up a final-round meeting with #2 qualifier Prudhomme. Prudhomme had the edge during eliminations running 6.2s. Sure enough, the "Snake" scored a 6.23 in the final to win. Things took a turn for the better up in Canada for the NHRA Grandnationals. The race was delayed for one week due to rain. Dale qualified #3 for the eight-car show with a 6.20/225.56. He had a bit of luck in round one, where he got crossed up, got off the gas, and then hammered it again, went into a wheelstand, and yet still ran 6.25! This beat Frank Mancuso, who fouled anyway. In the semifinals, a 6.19/237.46 beat Tim Grose who overpowered the track. In the final, he faced Dale Armstrong. Dale was tough as he had set Low ET in the first round, with a 6.10, and he won his semifinal race with a 6.15. In the final, Pulde ran his best of the weekend, 6.16 at 237.46. This got the win, while Armstrong must have hopped it up a bit and went into heavy tire smoke before shutting down. Usually, Dale would have been at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships, but the rain date for the Grandnationals conflicted with that. Pulde showed at New England for the NHRA Division 1 final on August 17. A 6.21/224.43 qualified #5 for the eight-car show. But this field was tough. In the first round, Pulde improved to 6.13/223.88, yet he lost to eventual winner Burgin's 6.01/240.
