Notes: Ray was driving this car at Marion, SD, at Thunder Valley for the NHRA Division 5 race. He won over the eight-car field, running 7.73 over Paul Radici in round one, and in the semifinals, a 7.67 advanced into the final when Don Smith lost an engine. In the final, his 7.55/200.00 (Top Speed), won the race over Larry Fullerton's 7.63. Also ran 204.81 at Atco 1971. | The best speed I found for our late friend Dave Ray in this car was at the Englishtown fall event at 205.47. - Dennis Doubleday |

Notes: 1973 winner Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars Series. Set Green Valley Race City Track Record on 3/73 at 6.50/219. Coke event promo poster from US 30 cited 6.55/218 bests. David was at ESTA Drag Strip in mid-June for a four-car show. In his first race, a 6.82/171.42 beat Harland Thompson's 7.11/193 in the "Tom and Jerry" car. On his second run, he beat Pete Hill's 6.87/182 with a 6.61/202.24. Ray went undefeated when he ran 6.65/206.88 to beat Pee Wee Wallace's 6.84/196 in his final race. Shortly after that, he was at Beech Bend for the Coca-Cola Cavalcade race. David was the low qualifier with a 6.64/223.32, and in the first round, he set Low ET with a 6.56 at 221.67 that beat Roger Lindamood. He went up against the "LA Hooker" driven by Dave Condit in the final, and Ray's 6.83/208.81 took the victory over Condit's troubled 8.28/106. |

Notes: 1974 Coca-Cola Cavalcade of Stars car. Destroyed 6/74 in a top-end crash at Lebanon Valley Dragway, NY | Car owner Mike Burkhart built this car for David Ray to drive for the '74 season. His second car, built in '72, was still being campaigned and driven by Charlie Therwhanger. Unfortunately, this car didn't last the whole year. Tony Casarez built the 115" chassis. Burkhart had always been a Chevy guy, and his early cars always used Chevy engines, but by the '70s, you had to have a Hemi or pack it in. This Vega used an Ed Pink-built Hemi. The Velasco 1/2 stroker crank gave it a 480 cubic inch displacement. Howards supplied the rods and cam while the pistons were from Forgedtrue. Air Research reworked the GMC 6/71, and up top sat an Enderle injection unit that fed 90% nitro through a Hilborn pump. A Lenco transmission delivered the power to a Ford rear with 4.10 gears. Crump Brothers of Crump Brother's Custom painting was responsible for the flamed paint job, and the lettering was by Jack Downey. As mentioned, David had this car destroyed at a Coca-Cola Cavalcade race at Lebanon Valley in July. He won his first-round race with a 6.96/196 over Larry LaDue, and his 6.86/186 beat Roger Lindamood in the semifinals, but when he pulled his 'chute, the rear end ripped off the chassis. The Vega body flew off while the rest of the car headed into the woods. It then hit a few trees, and the engine separated from the chassis. The roll cage and the remains of the chassis came to a stop on the far end of the track. Ray was OK. |

Notes: Photo from Bristol, TN, 1992. Troy got his start when Don Nieves and Pete Miner asked him to start tire wiping on the Gold Coast car when he was a kid. He stuck with the team throughout the 70s. He also crewed on the gold-plated Top Fuel car of Ruffalo and Ehlen. The Camaro was a former Tennessee Shaker car purchased from Gary Litton. - Troy Ray, Racin & Rockin with Draglist.com - 11/12/15. | Troy attempted to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, but was only able to run a best of 6.97/162.54 and failed to make the field. |

Notes: When Jim Thomas and the original "Genuine Suspension" funny car team split up after running the "AMX-1," Thomas was left on his own. The next car Thomas built was this almost forgotten Mustang. The Mustang was quite unlike the "AMX-1" because it was long and low. Thomas hired Gary Read to be the car's usual driver, but it also appears that Dean LaPole of "King Camaro" fame might have driven the car, too. The Mustang was not raced for long before Thomas built the Top Fueler for which he is best remembered. |
