Notes: Ran 7.05/200.01 at Detroit on 5/23/71. ND cites that round one time beat Al Vanderwoude but was not quick enough to advance to round two. | Bobby Rowe was at Miami in February for a best-of-three-match race again Tom Sneden driving the Bob Banning Challenger. In the first race of the match, Rowe's 7.11/205.01 beat Sneden's 7.21/206. Sneden set a track record in winning the second race when Rowe got out of shape and shut off. Bobby won the match in the third race with his 7.04/207.37, beating Sneden, who shut down. He was at LaPlace in Mid-March for a four-car show. He beat Pat Minick's 7.30/204 in the "Chi-Town Hustler" with a 7.25/203.61. In his second race, Rowe's 7.27/205.47 lost to Leroy Goldstein's 7.07/189 in the "Ramchargers" car. Bobby ran a solo 7.50 in his final race as Chris Karamesines' new Mustang broke. He then went to Tulsa, where he and Dick Rosberg, driving the "Fighting Irish" Camaro, took turns resetting the track record. Rowe started by setting it at 7.63, and then Rosberg lowered it to 7.59. Bobby came back to claim it again with a 7.56, but Rosberg took it back with a 7.49. At the NHRA Gatornationals, these two would qualify #4 and #5, with Rosberg getting the lower spot. Both ran 6.99. In the first round, Bobby's opponent, Casey Powell, crashed, and Rowe advanced. He also got an easy solo in round two after Larry Arnold blew his engine while winning his first-round race and was unable to appear. In the semifinals, Rowe's luck turned; he beat Mart Higginbotham with a 7.02, but his transmission let go, and he had a fire in the lights. He was unable to run Goldstein in the final. In April, the "Super Duster" was at National Trail for a best of three match race against Bruce Larson's USA #1 Camaro. In their first race, Rowe's 7.39/198.66 beat Larson's 7.57/191. Larson came back to tie it up at one apiece with his 7.36/202 beating Bobby's 7.51/191.88. Rowe notched the win in their final race by running a track record 7.17 at 200.44 to beat Larson at 7.50/184. Bobby qualified #8 at NHRA Springnationals at Dallas at 6.959/211.76. He beat a shutting-off Leroy Goldstein in round one, with a 7.19/205. The Super Duster could not start in round two, sending Kelly Brown forward. Bobby was driving the Hawaiian at Indy. |

Notes: Don Schumacher Blue Cuda with the purplish paint job. Car 2 of 3 car team. Bobby ran 6.66 at Cayuga Dragway on 4/20/73. A week later, Rowe was at Atco for its Factory Showdown race on April 29. Unfortunately, the car broke a rear end in his first-round race against Mart Higginbotham. He repaired it and came back out later for a consolation race against Bill Leavitt. His 7.16/219.51 beat the Mustang's 7.80/189. He was at Aquasco in May for another eight-car show. While he didn't reach the final, he set Low ET on a 6.61/220.58 run. Rowe competed at New England Dragway's Spring Funny Car Championships in June. It was a sixteen-car field, and in the opening round, his 6.52/217 beat the "Frantic Ford." A second-round 6.59/205 defeated Al Hanna's 7.26/187 in the "Eastern Raider." He set Low ET in the semifinal with a 6.47/193 that beat Sam Miller, who was driving Frank Federici's "Shark." This put him into the final against Leavitt. Rowe was favored to win in the final based on ETs, but he threw a blower belt, and his 6.87/163 finished runner-up to Leavitt's 6.66/215. |

Notes: Ran Nitrous injected alcohol combination in AA/FC. This car caused a lot of controversy in '83. It started in Tucson for the AHRA Winternationals. AHRA had a new sponsor from Internal Combustion Engineering. They so happened to be the makers of Ricky Ruiz's 900hp NOS in his alcohol FC. Laughing gas was allowed to be run in AHRA's alcohol FC class, but Ruiz wanted to step up and run against the nitro-fed FCs. Before doing this, he wanted to have a chance to break the AHRA's BB/FC speed record of 215. The track was not very good for ETs or speeds that weekend, and Ricky's best speed was only 192. His 7.91 ET was the best for the alcohol floppers. So, after paying a $5.00 fee to change his class paperwork, he got to run with the "big boys" on Saturday. None of his runs on Friday would count toward qualifying for Fuel FC. So, on Saturday, he could only run a best of 8.48 and decided it was better to run back in the alcohol class. He paid another $5.00 fee to return to the class. This was all fine and dandy for a few hours until qualifying ended for the nitro cars, and his 7.91 would have qualified #7 and "bumped" John Force from the field. Half the FC drivers were ready to pack up and leave unless Ruiz was bounced from the program. AHRA did an about-face and said that Ricky was not allowed to race in fuel FC on a rule not found anywhere in their rulebook, "No class changes after the closing of tech." Immediately, ICE pulled its sponsorship from all AHRA events. To make matters worse, after the final rounds of racing were run, Jim Tice announced that, from this point forward, nitrous oxide was legal in both alcohol and fuel FC classes. Go figure. Ricky did run in the alcohol class, where he almost won, reaching the final before losing. So he packed up and headed to Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals, where more grief awaited. NHRA allowed him to run the car in fuel FC. On Thursday, his first pass was a fireballing 7.38/197.80 that torched the Corvette body. After repairing the car, he returned on Saturday, and Ruiz ran 7.441/197.80 for the eighth alternate spot but split open the bottom end of a previously welded KB block. | That's some backstory. Saw this one at the '83 Winters and a magazine picture showing the spidery Nitrous system. - Joe Moore |
