Notes: Clare replaced Arnie Behling as the Ramchargers driver for 1973. He started his NHRA tour as the firth alternate at Gainesville (times not available but slower than 6.75). On April 28, he was at Capitol for an eight-car show. All cars there were to run two races with the two cars with the lowest ET's meeting in the final. Sanders ran 6.54/189 in his first race, but he lost to a quick-leaving Tommy Grove, who won with a 6.56/216. In his second race, he beat Bobby Rowe's off-pace 7.33/224 with a 6.73/189. Neither of his times qualified him for the final. Clare qualified #13 at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals at 6.894/216.86. In the first round, he slowed to 7.104/213.77, which lost to Dale Emery's 6.63/209. At Bristol the following week (June 17) for the IHRA Springnationals, he qualified #2 with a 6.71. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Chi-Town Hustler" in the first round. Sanders looked like a sure bet to win at Englishtown on July 4. He beat Jim Liberman in the first round, with a 6.68/215.31, and in the semifinals, his 6.88/211.26 beat the "Boston Shaker." In the final, he was up against Lew Arrington in the "Brutus" Mustang, but he broke a blower pulley and could not run, giving Arrington a solo for the win. Shortly after this, he was at York US 30 for a best of three match race against Liberman. In their first race, Sanders' 6.92/198.23 beat Jim's tire-smoking 7.30/170. In the second race, Clare got severely out of shape and shut off while Liberman legged it through at 7.19/192. With the score now even, they had their "rubber" match. Clare got the win with his 7.32/216.34 topping "Jungle's" 7.50/206. Sanders was at Martin, Michigan, for the PHR Championships in August. All cars ran the first-round, with the lowest eight ETs advancing into round two. Clare's 6.49/218.97 easily got him into round two, where he beat Jim Nicoll's 6.66/210 with a 6.58/222.77. But in the semifinals, he fell off to a 6.93/209.79 loss to eventual winner Don Prudhomme's 6.72/201. Almost 50 cars were attempting to qualify for the sixteen-car field at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Sanders' 6.410/225.13 got him the #7 spot for the show. But in the opening round, former "Ramchargers" driver Leroy Goldstein ran 6.37/229 to beat Clare's 6.522/225.00. He reportedly also ran 6.39 and 230.17 this year in addition to a 6.34/219.73 at Lebanon Valley. |

Notes: Pretty sure this is the same Woody Gilmore chassis as a 1974 car with a Ken Cox body? Side tin looks the same. | Santucci was at Richmond in August for the fourth NHRA Division 2 race. He beat Jerry Caminito's 6.96 in the first round, with a 6.77/177.51. He made an easy solo in the semifinals to set up a final-round showing with Billy Meyer. In the final, he improved to 6.72/205.01, but it was no match for Meyer's 6.54/213. |

Notes: Raced the Omni in 1981 and early 1982. Santucci was at Englishtown in October for its Fall FC Finale. In the opening round, his 6.23/229.59 beat Bruce Larson's 6.49/221. His time was good enough to advance him into the final, where he faced Larson again. This time Larson got the win. |

Notes: Santucci was at Darlington in March for the IHRA Winternationals. He qualified for the sixteen-car field, but in the first round, he smoked the tires and lost to Kenny Bernstein. He raced at the Englishtown Spring Funny Car Bonanza. The ND article only said, "I hope D.A. Santucci's Black Magic Funny Car racer gets over its cold." It's hard to tell what that was about. In May, he was at Atco for its May Madness race. This was his first trip to Atco in twelve years. Four FCs were running, and in his first race, he ran 7.23/155.97 to beat an out-of-shape Bobby Lagana. In the second race, he faced Bruce Larson, driving his new Corvette. The two had a great race that saw Larson's 6.37/226 defeat Santucci's 6.38/233.76. At the 1985 IHRA SummerNats, Edgewater Raceway Park, Cincy, OH, he qualified 10th at 6.01/226 but lost in the first round to John Lombardo. DA qualified #11 at 5.853/246.98 at the Keystone Nationals. In round one, he upset Ed McCulloch, 6.027/195.73 to a 9.94, but lost round two to 6.03/209 to 6.377/215.31. That was DA and Barb's only NHRA national event in 1985. |

Notes: Dominic qualified #7 at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals with a 5.45/263.64. In the opening round, his 5.48/258.76 lost to Scott Kalitta's 5.46/264. Shortly after that (July 1), he was at New York International for the IHRA Empire Nationals. Thirteen FCs showed up and attempted to qualify for the eight-car field. Santucci's 5.91/254.50 qualified on the "bump." In the first round, his opponent, low qualifier Jerry Caminito broke, and Dominic's tire-shaking 5.99/253.74 advanced. Richard Hartman smoked the tires against him in the semi-final, and Santucci ran 5.68/262.26 to win. He faced Chuck Etchells in the final, and Santucci set both Low ET and Top Speed to win at 5.65/263.79. The speed was also a new track record. The following week, he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals. A 5.44/272.64 qualified #10. He lost to eventual winner Etchells in the first round. He was at Atco Raceway in August for the IHRA Eastern Nationals. In the first round, he ran Carl Ruth, who was debuting his new '56 Ford. Dominic's 5.47/270.04 beat Ruth's 6.05. He broke against Etchells in the semi-final. Also in August, Dominic won the Polaroid US All-Pro Funny Car Championships at Englishtown, defeating Richard Hartman in the final. He also ran well at Maple Grove in September for the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where he qualified #9 at 5.36/271.73. But once again, Etchells stopped him in round one. A week later (September 23), he was at Darlington for the IHRA U.S. Open Championships. He qualified second, and in round one, his 5.87/217.77 took out Bobby Lagana. He lost to Freddie Neely in the semi-final. Dom also ran 280 at Epping on September 9 and 273.88. He won the IHRA Empire Nationals at Empire International Raceway in 1990. |

Notes: 427 Chevy, B&M Turbo Hydro combo. 2000-lb. car on 118" Exhibition Engineering frame. The wheelbase was stretched 10 inches. The car was all-glass but not a flip-top. The front end was removed for access to the engine. (Name of entry is accurate. Camaro's name was misspelled on the car door, although a late-season repaint corrected that error.) Car was the subject of features in 8/67 Drag Strip and 2/68 SS&DI. - RT | Confirmed 8.82 at Salem, OH, and 167.28 at OCIR Mfg. Meet on 11/25/67. | Sappington had a really bad weekend in May at Detroit during the running of the AHRA Grandnationals. He spun out on Friday, and on Saturday, a fuel line came loose, and the fuel caught fire. Quick thinking on Don's part got the fire to go out when he shut the fuel off. After getting the car stopped, he found the transmission had locked up. He stayed up all night fixing it for Sunday. On Sunday, he beat Al Fontanini and Jay Howell before meeting Jim Thornton, who drove the "Ramchargers" Dart in the semifinals. Jim got out on Don, but Don kept his foot in it for the fans. Unfortunately, the Camaro burst into flames a thousand feet into the run. His torque converter had blown out through the transmission shield, roll bar, roof, and windshield. How it had missed Sappington was a miracle. It had sliced through the 4" roll bar like it was nothing. Still, Don received second-degree burns. New England held a twelve-car show on September 17. Sappington's Camaro broke in the first round against Clare Sanders. At the Western US Super Stock Championships at Beeline on December 3, Don lost to eventual winner Don Nicholson in the first round. Don raced at OCIR's final race of '67 on December 17. It was an eight-car field, and Sappington qualified on the "bump" with an 8.22. Unfortunately, he lost early. |

Notes: 427 Chev, B&M TurboHydro combo. 2000-lb. car on 118" exhibition Engineering frame. Wheelbase stretched 10 inches. The car was all-glass but not a flip-top. front end removed for access to the engine. (Photos show a repaint late in '67 corrected the mis-spelling of "Camaro" on the doors. The photo here is from early '67. - RT | Don raced at the Funny Car Team Championships at OCIR on May 4, but he shut down in the first round and lost to Charlie Allen. A huge transmission explosion at Detroit Dragway damaged the asphalt and seemed to have ended Sappington's desire for racing. - NH | This is a photo of the car in 1967. In 1968, it had a more "candid" paint job. - Danny White |
