Notes: Article in the 8/2/64 Roanoke (VA) Times promoted a matchrace between the new Comets of Don Nicholson and Larry Lawson. Lawson was said to be the owner. Apparently that race was rained out, and the better-known Bill McDuell subsequently -- maybe within a week or two -- drove this Comet. We may assume Lawson never competed in this car. -- RT |

Notes: The Merrymen Car Club ran a 4-cylinder dragster in 1956-57. In May, they unveiled a new roadster that ran in the B/MR class. They spent $700 building the roadster. They brought it to Lions for its first outing on May 19 for testing. The B/MR class included such competitors as Denny Carrisosa, Tony Waters, Al Freeman, the Road Rebels, and Chuck Ross. It was a competitive class. It took a while before they notched their first win at Lions on Aug. 10 with 95.03 mph. Possibly for that reason, i.e., the competitive class in B/MR, they then switched to running in the B/R class. They got their first win in the B/R class a month later on Sep. 14 with a speed of 94.24 mph. On Sep. 28, they took a B/R trophy with 95.74 mph. Photo: San Pedro News-Pilot, May 15, 1957 -- MB |

Notes: They were the only 4-barrel entry at Lions' first anniversary meet on Oct. 27-28. They took their class win with 91.74 mph. Given that they were the only four-barrel entry, they were put into the dragster class for top eliminator competition. They drew Art Chrisman in the first round and were soundly defeated. Notes: Mike Gurtizen started out the season as the rear-engined Gent's dragster driver. Gurtizen turned 105.33 mph to take top eliminator honors at Convair Field in Allentown on Apr. 29. On May 6 at Allentown, Gurtizen won the dragster class with 105.74 mph. Mick McMillen took over the driving duties for the Allentown meet on June 3. He clocked 108.3 mph. Gurtizen was back in the driver's seat on June 17 when the club raced their dragster at Woodbine Airfield in New Jersey. He set a new top speed record for the East Coast with 116.73 mph. On June 24 at Frederick Municipal Airport in Maryland, Gurtizen set another new East Coast record with 125 mph. He took top eliminator honors, too. Back at Allentown on July 1, Gurtizen won a trophy for the dragster class and took the meet's top speed with 120.77 mph. At the NHRA Eastern Regionals at Woodbine, Gurtizen won trophies for top eliminator, dragster class, and meet's top time with 123 mph. Unfortunately, the dragster was demolished on its final run when the throttle jammed and Gurtizen was unable to stop it before it sped off the end of the track. He turned off the ignition after crossing the finish line, but the car continued to run on detonation. The brakes also failed through repeated use trying to stop the car. Gurtizen was uninjured, except for a few scratches. The club planned on building a new dragster for the next year. Photo: York Daily Record, May 12, 1956 -- MB |

Notes: A member of the Kamm Klub, he built his dragster at a cost of about $700. He tinkered with running on gas and fuel. At the AHRA National Championships on Aug. 31 through Sep. 3 at Great Bend, Kansas, he won the B Open Gas class with a speed of 99.77 mph. On Oct. 14 at Edinburg, he won the A/FD class with a speed of 101.00 mph. He then took top eliminator by beating Ken Atkinson's A/G '52 Ford. Photo: Corpus Christi Caller-Times, Sep. 21, 1956 -- MB |

Notes: Dodson was a member of the Pythons car club. He did most of his racing at Eagle Mountain National Guard Base. He began the season on Jan. 1 on a winning note, turning the fastest speed of the day at Eagle Mountain with 105.44 mph. He then ticked off consistent Open Gas class wins at Eagle Mountain on Jan. 15 (109.8 mph) and Jan. 29 (top eliminator, 102 mph). On Feb. 12, he dabbled with running both gas and fuel. He won Open Gas with 105.27 mph and A/FD class with 94.33 mph. He also took top eliminator. On Mar. 11, he won the Open Gas class (123.22 mph) and the Dragster class (123.62 mph). He also set a new track record in winning top eliminator with 125 mph. On Mar. 25, he snagged three trophies. He won top eliminator with 110.10 mph, Open Gas (111.10 mph), and Dragster class (111.9 mph). He won top eliminator (103.30 mph) and Open Gas (104.39 mph) on Apr. 8. He captured top eliminator (112.9 mph) and Open Gas (92.32 mph) wins on Apr. 22. He turned 111 mph to win top eliminator on July 1. Notes: Late in the 1955 season, Bill Bonebrake of Portland installed a big Studebaker engine in the Rowland rear-engined dragster. That dragster was a project of father and son--Earl and Monty Rowland. They enjoyed early success, copping top eliminator at Scappoose on Oct. 16, 1955. It wasn't surprising that they would enjoy early success to begin the 1956 racing season. On Apr. 15, they won Class X (unlimited class) at Scappoose Airport with 136.36 mph. That was good enough for establishing the fastest speed in the Northwest. On May 13, Rowland snagged the top eliminator trophy at Scappoose's bi-monthly races. On May 27, Rowland upped the Scappoose strip record to 138.46 mph to win Class X. Venturing south, at Aurora Airport on June 17, Rowland got the fastest time of the day with 132.77 mph. Rowland took a win in the X class for dragsters at Aurora on July 15 with 132.98 mph. At the NHRA Regional races at Aurora on July 21-22, Rowland turned 131.96 mph during time trials. They ended up with the meet's fastest speed with 132.74 mph. On Aug. 26 at Aurora, Rowland broke the X Class record with 139.66 mph. At the season's last race at Aurora, Rowland beat Paul Wellborn by four car lengths to take the victory in top eliminator. Rowland won the X class with 136.74 mph. Notes: Brent Tyler was something of a mad scientist in building cars--they were always unconventional. This rear-engined dragster was no exception. In 1955, Tyler had a front-engined dragster, but he mounted the same engine in the rear for the 1956 season. It had a Cord front wheel drive differential turned around and the ring gear flopped to use as a rear end, swing axles, Morris Minor torsion bars, twin I beam front end, etc. They ran 102 mph on May 13 at Douglas-Tahoe Airport near Minden. Although newspapers generally reported that Welsh did the driving, some articles reported that Tyler also drove. At Douglas-Tahoe Airport on May 27, Welsh turned the day's top speed with 118.03 mph. He also took top eliminator honors. On June 24 at Douglas-Tahoe, the car took top eliminator with 112.5 mph, reportedly with Tyler doing the driving. A different sort of news about the car popped up in newspapers in Nevada in mid-summer. Front page headlines in the Nevada State Journal (7/1/56) screamed, "Man builds hot-rod with airplane parts." That wouldn't have been too newsworthy as front-page news except that Tyler was charged with having stolen some of those parts from two planes parked at a Reno airport. The police impounded his dragster, and Tyler was arrested for grand larceny. The pilferage from the planes happened over the course of three months and amounted to $150 worth of stolen items. Tyler was released from jail after posting $500 for bail. He received permission to continue to use the stolen airplane parts while he was out on bail. Tyler spent several days trying to clear up the matter. It turned out that the son of the airplane's owner gave Tyler permission to take an oversized brake pedal and control rods. The plane, a wrecked Fairchild trainer, had sat at the field unused for several years. The owner did not know that his son had permitted Tyler to take the parts. When he found out, he dropped the charges against Tyler, and the dragster was returned. On July 26, Welsh raced the dragster to a top eliminator win with a time of 118.03 mph. On Aug. 5, the Cal-Neva Timing Association held half-mile races at Douglas-Tahoe. Welsh clocked the second fastest time of the meet with 130.909 for the half-mile. Although other races were held at Douglas-Tahoe later in the year, Tyler and Welsh were busy upgrading the dragster with a new Chrysler engine and streamlined rear body. Notes: Casaurang was president of the Concord Accelerators Club. At Kingdon on Mar. 25, Casaurang took a win in the fuel dragster class with 120.00 mph. Drag News (3/30/56) reported that it was a "very fine handling dragster." They were beaten in a round of top eliminator by the new rear-engined modified coupe of Ron Sterbenk, the eventual winner of top eliminator. They thereafter had to contend with Ed Cortopassi's "Glass Slipper" coming onto the Northern California fuel dragster scene. After just a month of operation since first opening on Sep. 2, the Vacaville Drag Strip held another race on Sep. 30. Three thousand spectators, including Casaurang's wife, Evelyn, watched in horror as he lost control and crashed in his fuel dragster at the end of the strip. He flipped several times and lived briefly, but his head was crushed. He succumbed at the hospital. He had just turned the day's top speed of 134 mph. He had worked as a truck driver for a Walnut Creek construction business. Photo: Vacaville Reporter, Oct. 5, 1956 -- MB |

Notes: Two young New York men, Gahn, from Freeport, and Drake, from Hempstead, took a little of this and a little of that to build their ratty-looking rear-engined dragster. They powered it with a '56 Chevy. They were members of the Freeport Rod Snappers car club. At a race at the Northport Drag Strip in June, they turned 92 mph. Notes: Just 17 years old, high school senior Hazel drove for the first time in a race at Sanford on Sep. 11. She was the only woman entrant in the race and was eliminated in the semi-finals of her class. It was exciting enough that she returned to race again a few weeks later. On Oct. 2 at Sanford, she got runner-up in the stock class with 75.26 mph. Photo: Biddeford Journal Tribune, Sep. 15, 1955 -- MB |
