Notes: Owen was a real character. In the 1960s and 1970s, he had a cam grinding business in south central Los Angeles--Owen's Orbit Cams. He was popular because he would grind a cam at a very reasonable price (like about $35). He liked to open at dark and close at dawn. He lived over his shop with his mother. Old timers recalled certain memories about going to his shop. "I made many a trip down to see Owen, had to wade through the dog droppings and the smell." Another remembered, "I can still see him in his blue coveralls with a Crook brand cigar in his mouth and several in his chest pocket." But in the '50s, Owen was a drag racer. Drag News (5/13/55) ran a 2-page feature on his speedy street roadster. It reported that he was secretary of the San Gabriel Road Rebels car club. Bowling discarded the conventional leaf spring suspension in favor of a pair of torsion bars at the rear and coils at the front. His '52 Chrysler engine was fitted with a log type manifold built by Bowling, fitted with four Stromberg carbs. Inside the engine was a Weber cam. It took him two years to build the car. He took a class win in A/SR at Pomona on Apr. 10 with 106.13 mph. That was good for a new strip record. He upped his class record at Pomona on Apr. 24 to 110.52 mph. Drag News (4/29/55) called it "one of the most creditable performances of the day." At the NHRA Regionals at Colton on May 15, he set a national record and won his class with 112.00 mph. Running at Colton on May 29, he took an A/SR class trophy with 108.48 mph. He liked to run at Colton. It was his kind of place. Either that, or the competition may not have been as stiff as it was at Pomona. Denny Carrisosa, Santa Fe Service, and Hess & Winslow were tough to beat at Pomona. On June 5 at Colton, he won his class with 107.24 mph. Back at Pomona on June 12, he set a new strip record and won his class with 111.00 mph. He took another win at Colton on June 19 with 112.50 mph. He won the A/R O.H. class at Santa Ana on June 26 with 109.89 mph. He towed his roadster to Paradise Mesa for the 2-day Pacific Southwest Championships. He set a record and won his class with 111.24 mph. He took a class win with 109.57 mph at Pomona on July 24. On Saturday night, July 30, at Colton, he took a class win with 106.10 mph. He won at Colton on Aug. 13 (108 mph) and at Pomona the next day on Aug. 14 (113.32 mph). At Colton on Aug. 27, he took a trophy win in A/SR with 109.00 mph. In September, he towed his roadster back to Great Bend, Kansas, for the first NHRA U.S. Nationals. He won the A/SR class with 88.75 mph and set an official national record with 111.11 mph. On Oct. 16, he set a new strip record at Colton with 113.20 mph. At Lions on Oct. 30, he won the A/SR class with 112.50 mph. He won his class at Colton on Nov. 6 with 112.52 mph. He towed the roadster to Phoenix for the completion of the rained-out Nationals in November and won his class (118.11 mph) and set a new national record with 115.26 mph. At the Kansas City Timing Association Drag Strip on July 31, Schliecher got top eliminator honors with 116 mph. The next week on Aug. 7, Schliecher took two trophies: top speed in time trials and eliminations. His speed was 112 mph. Notes: With Santa Ana, Lions, San Gabriel, and San Fernando jumping on the fuel-ban bandwagon, it left precious little places for a fuel car like the Walker Brothers ran to find a place to race. Pomona lagged behind the other strips in banning fuel cars, so that's where they raced before giving in to the no-fuel trend and switching to the gas-only ranks. On Feb. 3 at Pomona, they turned 104.57 mph to take a trophy in A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class. They ran on gas at San Fernando on Apr. 28, taking a trophy in the E.F.H. fendered class with 99.77 mph. They really had no other option if they wanted to race. They adapted. They won the gas B/Altered Coupe-Sedan class trophy at Lions on May 26 with 100.55 mph. They won the E Fendered Coupe-Sedan class at San Fernando on June 16 with 97.60 mph. With the lack of event showings for the Walker Brothers in 1957, it's apparent that the fuel ban took the wind out of their sails. Notes: Daniels and Bump bought this '32 Ford coupe for $15 and spent about a year turning it into a race car. Members of the Checkers car club, they dropped in a '55 Chevy engine with three carbs. Daniels and Bump shared driving duties. Their best time prior to August was at Akron where they turned 13.74 at 97.86 mph. To that date, they had won twelve trophies for class wins. Notes: Crosswhite, unmarried, got the racing bug in 1955 with an Olds hardtop coupe. He was a member of the Centurions Dragging Club. On July 14 at the Jaycee Fairgrounds strip in Oklahoma City, he won his eighteenth trophy with his stock '57 Chevy in 15.29 seconds. On Aug. 25 at the Fairgrounds strip, he won the super stock class. He was runner-up at the Nationals in the super stock class. On Sep. 9 at the Fairgrounds, he took a trophy in super stock with 14.92 seconds. Notes: Daniels, a milkman, was an NHRA regional adviser in '59. His Fiat was powered by a '57 Chevy engine. His wife, Eileen, also drove the car. Together they had won 104 trophies prior to the running of the U.S. Nationals, which they competed in. Bob's top speed to that date was 121 mph.
