Notes: At the U.S. Nationals at Oklahoma City, he set a new national record in E/SP with 73.11 mph. He also took a class win in E/SP with 16.48 at 73.46 mph. He also picked up a trophy for the best appearing sports car in a car show held in conjunction with the Nationals. With the taste of drag racing his Alfa Romeo in his blood, he raced at Tulsa North Airport just a few days after the Nationals on Sep. 6. He won a trophy in the E/SP class with 81.00 mph. Notes: During trial runs on Friday, Aug. 29, at the U.S. Nationals in Oklahoma City, he turned 65.26 mph. Grimmett just couldn't get the car to turn good numbers. When he got back to Arizona, Bill Honea, a member of his crew who traveled with him to Oklahoma, got behind the wheel at Chandler Drag Strip. "When everyone else tried it and couldn’t make it go, I finally got up enough nerve to try it," Honea said. "After a few runs, I was able to get up to 120 mph and 11.20 ET in A/C class." Notes: Mulkey owned the car, but his partners, Chuck Nelson and Ernie Horn, owned the engine. Nelson and Horn were members of the Shifters car club. Mulkey won the roadster class at the Eagle Mountain National Guard Base strip on Mar. 23 with 107.14 mph. He participated in the U.S. Nationals in Oklahoma City. On Friday (Aug. 29) during time trials, he reportedly clocked 129.68 mph. That was over 20 miles above the listed national record. His ET was 12.15 seconds. When he won the B/SR class on Aug. 31, his times dropped back down to earth: 13.36 at 104.65 mph. One has to wonder about the legitimacy of his Friday time trial run, but it was widely reported. Notes: Singer was one year away from winning all the marbles when he participated in the 1958 U.S. Nationals in Oklahoma City. In 1959, he put it all together, using a big blown Lincoln engine, to win top eliminator honors at the Nationals. In the '58 Nationals, Singer had a bit of success when he beat Lee Pendleton's Allison aircraft-engined dragster in one of the elimination rounds. He won by three car lengths over the behemoth former Green Monster car with a time of 10.53 at 135.54 mph. He lost in an elimination round to Art Chrisman.
