Notes: Dale was at Irwindale for the New Year's Funny Car race on January 2, but he failed to qualify for the eight-car show. He went to Lions on January 8, and he now had Frank Pedregon's blown Hemi in the car where the small-block Chevy had resided. He was not in competition with anyone as there were only a few cars making check-out passes. After running 9.03/162.45, Armstrong came back out for another pass but ended up sending two rods through the block of Frank's engine. On March 19, Carlsbad had 15 cars trying to make its eight-car Funny Car show. Dale qualified #7 with an 8.89, but in the first round, he lost a transmission and could not race against Butch Leal. | Armstrong swapped his blown 352" small block Chev for a semi-hemi in '67. Glass nose also replaced previous year's stock-trimmed front quarter. (Unknown if the entire roadster shell was replaced with the one-piece unit pictured.) - RT

Notes: A 5/10/74 National Dragster says this car ran 7.50s in 1969. Confirmed times are listed. Fiberglass Trends body. Dale qualified #8 out of forty cars attempting to make sixteen spots with a 7.89 at Irwindale's New Year's Day race. But in the first round, the car was ailing. He lost to a 10.38 by Clyde Morgan. At Beeline in Jan for the AHRA Winternationals, he lost to Dick Harrell's 7.83 in the first round. Thirty-five cars showed to do battle for eight spots at the second OCIR All-Pro on February 9, and Armstrong's 7.69/187.88 qualified #5, but again he lost early. Another first-round loss came on February 22 at Lions when Randy Walls beat him. A month later, on March 22, he failed to qualify at Lions when 22 cars showed for the eight spots. On April 26, he qualified for a sixteen-car show at Irwindale, but a first-round 8.20/191 by Ed Lenarth stopped his 8.29/170.77. On May 3 at OCIR's second annual Manufacturer's Funny Car Open, Gas Ronda's 8.29/176 beat Dale in his first race, and an 8.22/182.18 won his second race when Gordon Mineo fouled away a 7.92/182. He was at Lions for an eight-car show on May 24, and his 7.85 qualified on the "bump." This was pretty good, considering 19 cars were attempting to qualify. He slowed to an 8.11/183.67 loss to eventual winner Dave Beebe in the first round. After the loss, he came back out to race Hank Clark in the Rebel SST in a consolation race. He beat the AMC with an 8.46/179.28. On June 8 at Seattle for the Travelon's Fuel Championships, he again lost in the first round, to Mike Miller's 8.17.

Notes: Dale had a bit of bad luck at OCIR on May 2 for the Big Four Championships. He was lined up against Don Hampton for his first-round race when the car caught fire. He got out OK and the fire was quickly put out, but he was out of competition for the day. He raced at the fourth AHRA Grand American at Frontier International Raceway where he qualified with an 8.03. A first-round 7.93/188.17 lost to John Dekker's 7.73/191. He was back at OCIR on May 30 for the Funny Car 500, but he fouled away a 7.74 in the first round, against Wendell Shipman. Dale won over an eight-car field at the Tom Ferraro benefit race at Irwindale on June 6. He beat Bob Smith in the first round, with a 7.85/184.80, and in the semifinals he ran an easy single. In the final, he set Low ET of the meet with a 7.73/187.50 to beat Hampton for the victory. At Lions on June 13 for the All-American series race, he qualified for the eight-car show and in round one, beat Smith's 7.95/163 in "Bad Bascomb's Ghost" with a 174.75. Unfortunately, his Challenger came up ailing in the semifinals and he could only coax a 10.01 out of it that lost to Gene Conway's 7.27/196. At the OCIR Anniversary Race on August 15, Dale won his first-round race with a 7.90/170.45, but the car burst into flames in the traps. The Challenger was extensively damaged, but Dale walked away with only slight shoulder burns.

Notes: Dale debuted a unique alcohol/nitrous oxide combination in his Satellite on January 1 at Sacramento. The car used nitrous as well as a small percentage of nitro. He was there for a best-of-three-match race against Tommy Ivo. Armstrong lost all three races, recording a best of 6.72/206 compared to Ivo, who ran a best of 6.22/214 in winning the match. Dale ran 6.50/214.79 at the PRO event at Beeline on 1/14/77. Confirmed 6.48 per Bret Kepner. | In a December '77 Drag News interview, AA/Dale drew a picture of how part of the problem was that the injector nozzles were pointed directly at each other. The Surfers (or maybe anybody who used) Hilborns had offset nozzles, with pictures. - Joe Moore

Notes: Dale didn't run at the season-opening NHRA Winternationals, but he was at the NHRA Gatornationals in mid-March. He qualified #5 with a 6.06/233.76, but he shut off when the car went into a wheelstand in the first round. His 6.94/149.00 lost to Al Segrini, who had his own problems at 6.40/223. In April, he was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 Opener. He qualified #3 with a 6.49/218.97 and went on to win. In the first round, he ran 6.41/197.80 over Dominic Santucci's 6.92/170. He then set Low ET and Top Speed in the semi-final at 6.25/231.36 while defeating Tim Grose's 6.74/195. In the final, his 6.30/226.13 got the victory over Murf McKinney's 7.21. Near the end of April, he was at Baton Rouge for the NHRA Cajun Nationals. It was a tough eight-car field, and drivers such as Raymond Beadle, Don Prudhomme, and Dale Pulde failed to make it. Dale did, however, run 6.16/234.98 for the #7 spot. Unfortunately, he lost to Ron Colson in the "Hawaiian" in the first round. He failed to qualify at the NHRA Springnationals, running a 6.30/218.34 best that was good for the third alternate. He didn't run at Denver for the NHRA Mile-High Nationals, but he was at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, where he qualified #5 with a 6.05/232. He ran his best NHRA national event times of the year with a 6.049/238.72 defeat of Tom McEwen but lost the second round to Raymond Beadle in the "Blue Max." The following week (July 20), Dale was in Milan for the IHRA Northern Nationals, where he qualified #6. He lost to Dick Rosberg in the first round. In August, he won the NHRA Division 1 race at Maple Grove. Armstrong set Low ET and Top Speed in the final with a 6.20/231.95 to beat future employer Kenny Bernstein. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals. He ran 6.20/233.76 to qualify #2. In round one, he picked up to a 6.10 (Low ET) at 236.22 to beat a tire-smoking Al Segrini. In the semifinals, his 6.15 beat John Force, who also smoked the tires. In the final, he faced off against Pulde. This time, the "Speed Racer" smoked the tires, Armstrong shut off, and Pulde got the victory with a 6.16/237. He got another win on August 17 at the NHRA Division 3 race at Beech Bend. Dale set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.08. He beat Paul Smith in the "Sting" in the first round, with a 6.21/227.84, and he ran an easy single in the semifinals to go into the final against Billy Meyer. The two had a good race, but Dale's 6.16/236.84 got the win over Meyer's close 6.20/238. At Indy for the NHRA US Nationals, he qualified #14 with a 6.10/234.98. In the first round, an off pace 6.39/220.58 lost to Meyer's 6.13/229. The following week (September 7), he was at Jackson County Sports Park in Medford for the NHRA Division race there. Dale qualified #4 in the eight-car field with a 6.42/221.13. He ran 6.54/216.86 to beat Gary Lewis in the first round, but in the semifinals, his 6.38/218.97 lost to eventual winner Beadle's 6.09/235. Mike Kase owner; wrecked Challenger bodied car. Ran 6.101/234.08 at NHRA Indianapolis 9/80.

Notes: Dale lost an engine during qualifying at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. The resulting fire burned up the car. But rain postponed the race a week, and Dale had time to repair it for eliminations. Lost this body in a fire at Columbus race. Qualified it #13 at 6.253/229.59 and lost in round one, to Kenny Bernstein, 6.18/238.72 to 6.238/226.70. Not sure when the fire occurred. on the first-round loss? Dale ran 6.175 for the first alternate at Atlanta. Was that in the Challenger or the Omni? (The Omni ran at Gainesville).

Larry faced Dave Strickler on May 14 for a best of three match race. In the first race, a 9.29/147.78 lost to Dave's 8.77. In the second race the Charger broke and Strickler singled to an 8.70 win in his Corvette. Even though Dave had officially won the match they came back out for a third run. Once again the Corvette won when Arnold broke and coasted through with an 11.16/101.58.

Notes: The "Super Cuda" was one of several funny cars from the Memphis area in the sixties. Pat Collins built the car in 1968 and teamed up with Bill Taylor to race the beautiful candy apple red Plymouth. The Coleman and Taylor team had raced the "Kingfish" funny car. Coleman sold the car and name to T.B. Smallwood after the 1968 season. The "Super Cuda" proved to be just as good as the old car. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis and the car was powered by a 426 Chrysler Hemi on 55% Nitro backed by a Coleman and Taylor built transmission, of course. Larry Reyes, Larry Arnold, and Sidney Foster all drove the "Super Cuda" to countless wins. Reyes had the best times in the car with a 7.53 at 198.46, while Arnold ran 7.76 at 193, and Foster ran 7.76 at 196.69. In 1968, Reyes won the King of Kings Race at Capitol Raceway, the AHRA Drag World Finals in Wichita, and the Super Stock Invitational in Detroit. (Stats Courtesy Dennis Doubleday. Logghe Stamping Company built the chassis, and a 426 Chrysler Hemi powered the car on 55% Nitro, backed by a Coleman and Taylor-built transmission, of course. Notes: Sid started driving this car early in June. He was in Tyler, Texas, for a best-of-three-match race against Mike Burkhart on June 7. He won the match. Times he reeled off since jumping behind the wheel included 7.52/199.10 at Memphis on June 11. He qualified seventh at the NHRA Springnationals with a 7.91/192.71, beat Mike Burkhart in the first round, with a 7.79/196.50, but lost to Tom McEwen in the second round, 7.67/185 to Foster's 7.60/201.79. He still managed to have the fastest Ford Funny Car at the meet with the 201.79 pass. On June 27, he went to Courtland, Tenn., and ran 7.51. He then reset the ET record at National Trail with a 7.63/201.79 on June 29. Sid raced at an eight-car show at Suffolk on July 4, but an 8.03/185.04 lost to Dean LaPole in Larry Christopherson's Nova in the first round. The next day it was off to Blaney, S.C., where he set another track record at 7.93/200.44. Another best-of-three-match race was run at LaPlace on July 20 against Don Gay's "Infinity" GTO. Sid won the first race with an 8.51/174.41 when Roy Gay got out of shape and hit the guardrail with minor damage to the GTO. Gay evened the score in the second race, winning with an 8.02/189 over the Torino's quicker 7.99/188.28. Foster lost an engine on the line in the third race, and Gay soloed to the match race victory. The following week (July 27), the "Super Ford" was at Southland Dragway for a best of three match against Leonard Hughes in the "Candies & Hughes" 'Cuda. Foster won the first race by default with an 8.15 when the 'Cuda broke a transmission in the first race. A new trans was installed, and in the second race, Hughes' 7.48/203 beat Sid's 7.83/191.89. In the third and deciding race, Foster ran a strong 7.67 but still lost to Leonard's 7.57/203. Foster lost to Gene Snow at Rockford Manufacturer's meet but beat Pat Minick with a 7.75/196.50 and Arnie Beswick with a 7.85. He ran a best-of-three-match race against Bobby Wood at Palmetto on August 9. Sid fouled in the first round while running a 7.72/194; the run also cost him a transmission. Wood won the first race with a 7.56/198, then singled to two more wins when the Super Ford couldn't return. A big win came at the AHRA Drag World Championships. There he beat Bob Sullivan in the final. He went to Indy for the NHRA U.S. Nationals but failed to crack the 7.54 "bump." On September 6, he ran at Bristol for the AHRA All-American. Sid beat Jim Maybeck in the first round, with a 7.80, before losing to Ronnie Runyan in round two. He lost early at Nashville's King of the Funnys race on September 13, where Runyan got him again, this time in the first round. On October 4, Foster showed up at the National Dragster open at National Trail. He was gunning for the NHRA Funny Car speed record of 198.67. On his first and only pass, he ran 202.74 but could not stop the car and crashed into the safety net. Sid was OK, but the Torino body was crunched up. He raced Wood again in mid-October for another best of three match at Shelby Country. Wood fouled in the first race, but Sid still managed to drive past him with a 7.49/201.78, tying the track speed record. In the second race, the Ford's transmission let go, and Bobby won with a 7.59/193, but in the last race, Sid sewed up the match by setting both ends of the track record with a 7.41/202.24 blast that beat Wood, who fouled again. On November 2, he raced at the Sears Point North/South Championships. The car ran well, hitting a 7.89/194.60, but he failed to make the finals. Sid qualified second on the Ford team at OCIR on November 7, and after the renewed, he returned on November 16 for their manufacturers meet; Sid won the first round with a motor blowing 8.11/186.72. But that was the only run he made due to the blown engine. According to a Drag News issue from November '69, Sid had mentioned that the car had run a best of 7.11/209. No mention of where these times were run. (Drag News 11/69) Ran 7.74 at first Annual Manufacturers' Championships at Rockford (Ill.) Dragway. - RT | Also 196.06 at Rockford Dragway, Byron, Ill., 7/69 | As far as I know, this car always campaigned with a Cammer. In 1970 the Mustang had a 426 installed to run at the manufacturer's meet, but Sid insisted that the SOHC was back for the next meet.
