Notes: This is the fourth car the Burkholder Bros. built. It was originally run in the AA/A class on Gas. Then we changed to Fuel during the AA/FA match race days. 15% nitro was all we could pass through the gas injector system, but still eventually ran 200 mph. Car was based on owner Harry Burkholder built chassis with the Old's engine from their previous AA/A. The body by brother Pete was a one-off 23 T touring. Was ranked as the world's fastest Olds powered car. |

Notes: This was the fourth altered built by the Burkholders. The chassis was 1.5" chrome moly by owner Harry. The body was a '23 T touring one off, created by combining front 2/3rds and rear 2/3rds of a '23 T roadster. Paint by Pete. This was when they were still running the Oldsmobile engine in 1968. Changed to Chrysler Hemi in 1969. |

Notes: Thurmond started his season at Irwindale on January 14. He qualified #3 with an 8.36/189.59. Bill was at Irwindale on August 17 for a altered vs FC's race. In the first race, his 8.22/178.21 beat Dee Keaton who shut off. In his second race, his 8.74/188.28 defeated Steve Bovan's 8.37/192. In the final race, Bill's 8.03/195.22 lost to Willie Borsch's 7.92/180. | 360 cubic inch 354 on 70% Nitro. By 1968 the early ('29-'32) Ford roadster body style had long passed "dinosaur" status in fuel altered racing. The Thurmond Bros. long-running throwback was the last competitive example of its breed, winning a 16-car fuel altered show at Irwindale in 1968. Times were 7.89 at 193.12 mph. - RT |

Notes: Set a "1320 Record" for class A Hot (aka Fuel) Roadsters with a 151.77 blast at Bakersfield on May 3. Made cover (again) of 5/09/59 Drag News. We need to find out if Burkhart-Burns ran under the well-known Reath Automotive "banner" other than in 1959.; He set a new but short-lived Drag News 1320 record at Bakersfield on May 3. At Riverside, on May 17, he won what Drag News mistakenly called the A Fuel Coupe-Sedan class with 10.44 at 144.00 mph. He really ran in what was then called the A Hot Roadster class, meaning he ran on fuel. Photo: "Show us your favorite Model A roadsters," p. 7, in Jalopy Journal, The H.A.M.B. -- MB |

Notes: Cagle ran this modified roadster (yellow T-bucket on dragster chassis) at the same time as the fueler. Cagle was considered a pretty "resilient" character. He was busted up pretty bad in a crash at Great Bend, Kansas, in 1959 but returned to drag racing to campaign the Newhouse Auto Parts modified fuel roadster. He was a police officer in Los Angeles and reportedly lost a leg in a shooting. He left drag racing in 1967. In 1971 he lost an arm and an eye in a dirtbike accident on El Mirage. He got involved with the SCTA in the mid-Seventies and soon became the chief timer for the organization. He served as SCTA president for a decade until his death in 1994. His ashes were reportedly scattered at the '94 March Meet at Bakersfield, released from the chute pack of the Pure Hell altered after a 240 mph run. - RT |

Notes: On July 19, Rick was at Irwindale for an eight-car show. He qualified #1 with a 7.72/188.66 and a first-round 7.66/187.88 beat Glen Way in the "Groundshaker" car. Unfortunately, he fouled against eventual winner Sush Matsubara in the semifinals. |
