Notes: Stan was at Irwindale's Grand Premiere race in January. He qualified #14 in the sixteen-car field, and in the opening round of eliminations, he got crossed up against eventual winner Jim Dunn. He was at Irwindale on April 21 for the Coca-Cola Funny Car Championships, where he lost to Sush Matsubara in the first round. A week later, Bowman was at Indianapolis for the NHRA Division 3 opener. Not sure if he ran two Vegas this season, but ND reported that he was competing in one of his first races with his "new" car. Only five cars showed at Indianapolis, and Stan qualified #3. Jackie Price failed to show in the first round, and Bowman advanced with an 8.63. In the semifinals, he lost to Dale Emery's 6.54 in the "Jeg's" Camaro. Stan was the first alternate at NHRA Sanair but got into the show. He lost in round one, to Paul Radici, 6.95/213 to 7.337/209.30. Stan was among 36 non-qualifiers at NHRA Indy with a 6.84/215.31. That was his last national event of the year. |

Notes: One of the few fuel cars still running Firestone slicks by mid-70s. Stan was the runner-up to John Schumacher at the second NHRA Division 3 race at National Trail in May. In June, he was back at National Trail for the NHRA Springnationals, but he was the fourth alternate with a 6.926/204.08. Stan also attempted to qualify at NHRA Indy but was 17th alternate at 7.02/157.34. Photo from the 1974 NHRA Springnationals, National Trail Raceway, Columbus, Ohio. |

Notes: Stan ran well at the IHRA Nationals at Dragway 42 in August. He qualified #2 in the sixteen-car field with a 6.60/221.13. An improved 6.52/212.76 beat a tire-smoking Ron O'Donnell, and in round two, his 6.36/220.58 took out Kenny Safford's 6.58/214 in the "Mr. Norm" car. He lost in the semifinals when his 6.61/200.44 fell to Denny Savage's 6.42/222 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." After such a good showing, it was surprising to see Bowman DNQ a week later (August 24) at the PHR Championships at Martin, Mich. His best of 6.63 failed to make the eight-car show. He rebounded nicely by qualifying #4 at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals with a 6.244/226.13 (behind only Beadle, Prudhomme, and McCulloch). Unfortunately, he lost to Bob Pickett with this huge wheelstand in the first round, 6.43/229 to 12.83/70.20. That was the team's only NHRA national event this year. |

Notes: Stan Bowman really ran well in '76. He qualified #14 at the NHRA Gatornationals at 6.539/223.88 but smoked the tires in the opening round and lost to Johnny White, 6.84/200 to 11.65/73. He won the NHRA Division 1 race at Cayuga, where his final round 6.69/191.89 beat George Johnson, who smoked the tires to a 7.78/201 runner-up effort. Earlier, he set Low ET with his 6.60/191.89 run in the semifinals. Stan qualified #1 at the Beech Bend Divisional race with a 6.30 before beating John Austin's 6.51/199 in the final with a 6.357/205.47. He qualified on the "bump" at Indy with a 6.269/223.32, but in the first round, a 6.448/205.94 lost to Tom Prock's 6.24/223. Still, just qualifying at the US Nationals was a big deal as 40 cars attempted to make the show. |

Notes: Stan was at Edgewater in May for the NHRA Division 3 race. He set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 6.21/211.76 but got crossed up in the opening round and lost to Chuck Finders. At the NHRA Springnationals, his 6.37/225.00 qualified #14, and he repeated the number in the first round but lost to John Lombardo's 6.27. He was at West Salem's Dragway 42 at the end of July for the AHRA Grandnationals. His 6.46/222.77 qualified #5. That set up a first-round meeting with low qualifier Tom Hoover. Graham got crossed up in their race and shut off to 11.73/89.91 while eventual winner, Hoover, ran 6.45/221 to advance. Early in August, he faced Gary Bolger driving the "Golddigger" in a best of three match race at Tri-City. The race didn't go three rounds as Stan won two straight with times of 6.48/219 and 6.60/215. He was at Martin, Michigan, shortly after for the PHR Championships. The first round was a qualifying round, and his 6.48 over Kenny Safford made the eight-car field. In the first round, he lost to Hoover again. Stan ran 6.35/229.59 in winning Beech Bend WCS over Billy Meyer in Al Bergler's car. He was the fifth alternate at NHRA Indy at 6.306/230.17. That was his last NHRA national event of the year. | Competitive with steel, '58 heads. - Joe Moore |

Notes: Stan was at Dragway 42 for the AHRA Grandnationals in July. He qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car show with a 6.51, but in the opening round, lost to Len Imbrogno. At the PHR Championships at Martin, Michigan, his 6.30/205.47 qualified #6, but he got out of shape and shut off in the first round, against Gary Burgin. Gary did not run any NHRA national events this year. Michael Beach photo from Martin, MI, 1980. |

Notes: The "Red Turkey" Cuda funny car had one of the shortest life spans of any funny car. Jim Boyd debuted the car at Lions Drag Strip in May 1972 and destroyed it on its maiden voyage down the famed Long Beach track. Boyd was and still is a true hot rodder and low buck racer's racer. Jim had raced top fuelers in the sixties with moderate success and built this new Cuda funny in 1972 at his home. On the first run it tossed a blower, destroying the new body and Boyd's funny car career. |

Notes: AKA Henchman. This was originally the Dekker-Muelling Camaro. It also ran as BB/A and AAFA. Leo Rancours ran the car in the 1970s or 80s. The car still exists! Kevin Stevens runs it. Jack ran at the Rocky Mountain Funny Car Championships on July 20 at Continental Divide Raceway. Unfortunately, his first-round 8.89/170.77 lost to Bryan Teal's 8.49/160.42. The listed times are from Thunder Road, July 1969. Was this a hemi or a Chevy? |

Notes: Dick's Mustang was one of the toughest of the Ford brigade in early '66. He won the fuel Funny Car class at Irwindale for the AHRA Winternationals. He beat Wayne Darnaby in the final with a 9.21/139.75. Brannan beat Bob Harrop in a best two-out-of-three match at Lakeland in March. He won all three races with times of 9.29, 9.27, and a shut off 10.61 when Harrop fouled. Dick retired from racing Funny cars after Les Richey's accident on May 1. He was a good friend as well as a teammate to Les who lost his life at Fontana. - RH |

Notes: The original Little Red Wagon was built by Jim Schaeffer and John Collier, along with some engineers from the Dodge Truck Division, with Dick Branstner and Roger Lindamood responsible for the design and installation of the then-unique engine subframe. They were responsible for tuning as well. The quoted time was the shakedown run, with the Ramchargers' Jim Thornton at the wheel. The truck swapped out a slant-six for a new 426 Dodge hemi with dual quads and a Torqueflite trans. Weight was 2,670 pounds, but that was expected to drop slightly with the adition of lightweight fiberglass doors. Note the white-painted steel wheels used early on. The truck was built to run in the A/FX class, but an early tendency to pull accidental wheelstands caused those plans to change. The rest, as they say, is history. |

Notes: Blown fuel, rear-engine exhibition racer. Former Dick Branstner, Jay Howell built and campaigned "Dart Charger," also raced by Howell through 1965-early 1966 as "Polka Dart." Given by Dodge to Garlits in 1966 at Branstner's request. Cook was hired to drive, and the car was converted to direct-drive at Garlits shop, then in Troy, Michigan. Repainted black as 'Don Garlits' Dart.' Per a four-page feature in "Drag Strip," 7/66 Garlits yanked the Dart's original TorqueFlite trans, replaced it with a direct drive unit, and moved the entire mill rearward another 13 inches. On April 17, Cook was at Grand Bend in Ontario, Canada, where he made three exhibition passes. He smoked the tires on all three runs. All were sub-par. The first run was 10.72/159, while he improved to 9.45/153.32 on his second pass. On the last pass, he got out of shape and hung a tire off the track. Emery kept his foot in it and went through the lights sideways at 9.27/152. This car was destroyed in a crash at Detroit Dragway on June 11, 1966, without injury to Cook. Garlits replaced this car with the "Don Garlits Dart 2," a slingshot rail with a Dart roadster shell that Cook also drove. |
