Notes: Chuck Finders-built chassis, one-piece fiberglass shell from Fiberglass Trends. 396 semi-hemi with a Crankshaft Company stroker bringing it to 454 cubes, set back behind cowl. Goosed through a C&O Torqueflite trans. Initially injected. went to blower in 1968. Car featured in 5/67 Popular Hot Rodding. Car was reportedly sold to Gene Conway in '68, who replaced the front clip with a Firebird piece and swapped the Chev mill for an early hemi. Car was run under the C&O Automotive banner until Conway moved to a series of Corvette floppers. Note: Times quoted here slower than 8.60/165 PHR attributed to Hilborn-injected car the previous season, so may not be best this car saw with a blower. - RT | Last runs for this car and team were in 1967. Notes: The car carried Bundy's name in '81, changed to "Gold Digger" in '82-'83. John was in Atlanta early in March for an eight-car show. Unfortunately, he failed to qualify as traction was horrible. It only took a 7.48 to qualify, and the cars of Raymond Beadle and Kenny Bernstein were among the non-qualifiers. |

Notes: Dave Braskett and Gary Burgin had raced a Camaro in '71. For the '72 season, they changed to this 116" Buttera-built Vega. Not only did they change the body, but for the '72 season, they also changed from the 392 to a stock-sized, Keith Black built 426. It retained the independent front suspension the Camaro had used and, out back, a Detroit Locker carrying 5.43 gears. Gary was at OCIR in January for the All-Pro Opener. He won the eight-car show by beating Jim Dunn's 6.94/212 in the final with a 6.82/213.27. He didn't do quite as well at the second OCIR All-Pro event, as he lost to Ray Alley's 6.85/209 in the first round, with a 6.94/210.28. Things went bad at the Lions Grand Premiere on January 28. He qualified #2 with a 6.72, but he crashed into Joe Winters' car in the first round, and Burgin's car flipped. He was OK; the car, not so much. The team attempted to qualify at the Pomona Winternationals but was a DNQ (times unavailable). Gary was back at OCIR for the third All-Pro race. He qualified #5 with a 6.87, but a first-round 7.06 lost to Jerry Ruth's 6.67. Another loss to Ruth came not in the first round but in the final at the Las Vegas National Open on March 5. Burgin's final round 7.11/207.84 lost to Ruth's 6.97/207. Gary qualified #9 at NHRA Indy at 6.569/225.00 but lost to Sush Matsubara's 6.46/229.59 with a 6.605/217.39. We need to validate the 6.50/226 numbers; were those just the abbreviated Indy numbers? Gary was an NHRA record holder for a short while. Also, 6.66 at 222.22 in winning the All-Pro Series in 1972 and ran 6.61 at OCIR. |

Notes: Gary started the season on January 1 at Irwindale's New Year's Funny Car Festival. He qualified #15 with a 7.68, but his transmission got stuck in reverse in the first round. That gave Tom McEwen a single into round two. The next day he was at Fremont for their Funny Car Championships. A first-round 7.62/187.80 lost to Pat Minick's 7.47/197 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He was at OCIR for the first OCIR All-Pro race, but he lost early. He failed to qualify at the second All-Pro race on January 24. He also could not make the show at Pomona for the NHRA Winternationals (times unavailable). OCIR held an eight-car show in March, and although Burgin's 7.28/202.24 lost to Jim Dunn's 7.03/187 in the first round, he got back in on the "break rule" when Dunn was unable to run in the semifinal. Gary advanced into the final with a 7.85/134.32 when Ron O'Donnell broke in the "Super Chief." In the final, he slowed to an off pace 7.48/201.34 that lost to Gene Conway's 7.07/187. He had problems on March 20 at an eight-car show at Lions. As he was approaching the line for his first-round race with Dave Beebe, the super low Camaro snagged the electronic roller starter system and fractured the oil pan. The final OCIR All-Pro race was run on March 27. Gary qualified #10 and, in the first round, beat Rich Siroonian in John Mazmanian's Cuda with a 7.27/197.80. In the second round, his 7.34/185.95 beat Bob Pickett's late 7.33/151.00, but he broke on the run and could not make the semifinal. Lions held an eight-car show on April 24, and Gary was there. He beat Pickett in the first round, with a 7.34/182.42, but in the semifinals, he blew his motor on a 7.52/169.81 loss to Bob McFarland's 7.32/174. He was at OCIR on May 1 for the Big Four Championships, but he lost in the second round to Sush Matsubara. Irwindale hosted the NHRA Division 7 race on May 15. The eight-car Funny Car field was led by Dunn while Burgin's 7.26 qualified #5 setting up a first-round meeting with these two that Gary lost. Irwindale held its Memorial Day Championships on May 31, and Gary reached the final, where his 6.96/213.76 lost to Matsubara's 6.92/216. He finally grabbed a win when he won over an eight-car field at Lions on June 12. His final round times were 6.89/208.33. At OCIR's March of Dimes event, Burgin shut down early in a first-round loss to eventual winner Dave Beebe who was driving the "Mr. Ed" car. He was back at OCIR on July 3 for the Nitro Championships. He eased to an 8.39/111.38 when low qualifier Siroonian had to shut off on the line with a water leak in the opening round. But in round two, Beebe stopped him again, this time with a 7.00/217 to Gary's 7.16/212.26. The following day (July 4), he was at Irwindale for the Independence Day Championships. It was an eight-car field, and Burgin set Low ET in qualifying #1 with a 7.04 at 207.37. But Beebe seemed to have Gary's number because his 7.13/206 put Burgin on the trailer in the opening round. | 426 CID via opened-up early - not late - hemi, per feature in 8/71 Hi-Performance Cars. - RT |
