Notes: Late in March, Cain was at Cornhusker Raceway for a best of three match race against Doc Halladay, driving Bill Schifsky's Pinto. In their first race, Don's piston burning 7.93/192 lost to Doc's 7.66/197. Cain had to change pistons before their second race and could not get it done in time, so Halladay made a solo to win the second race and the match. Since the race was scheduled for three runs, the two came back for the final race, which Don won with his 7.80 beating the crossed-up Pinto's 8.32. On April 29, he was at Thunder Valley, Marion, SD, for a best of three against John Dekker. Don won the first two races with times of 7.69 and 7.37 before he lost the final race to a holeshot. His 7.23/188.96 lost to Dekker's 7.26/213. Cain was at Beech Bend on July 4 for its Independence Day Funny Car Championships. It was an eight-car show, and in round one, his 6.95/214.28 beat Preston Davis' 7.22/191. He improved on those times in the semifinal, where he ran 6.85/216.34 to upset Ron Colson's 7.00/200 in the "Chi-Town Hustler." He faced Paul Radici in the final, and the two had a great race that saw Paul's 6.86/188 get the victory over Don's hard-charging, 6.88/208.81. Shortly after that, he won the NHRA Division 5 race at Cornhusker. He beat Byron Nelson in the first round, with a 7.26/214.28 and a 7.22/210.28 in the semifinals dropped Doc Halladay's tire-smoking 10.00/124. In the final, his opponent, Jere Wilson, had problems and shut off to 9.15/110 while Cain grabbed the victory with a 7.80/210.28. A couple of weeks later (July 22), he was in Minnesota for the next NHRA Division 5 race. Unfortunately, he got crossed-up in the first round, and lost to Dekker. |

A first-round 8.11/198 beat Arnie Beswick, while in the semifinals, he picked up to a 7.66/204 to beat Don Schumacher's close 7.67/200. He was to face Minick in the final, but it rained, and the final never came off. Fritz had an interesting day on June 8 at the AHRA Springnationals. He ran well and was on his way to the finals, but things didn't work out. He started by winning his first-round race with a 9.96 when Shirl Greer fouled against him. In the second round, the impossible happened, Danny Ongais fouled away a 7.61, and Fritz won with a 7.89. In the semifinal, Callier was to face Dick Harrell, but Dick lost fire, and the backup car of Mickey Thompson/Danny Ongais was fired up to replace Harrell. Unfortunately, the starter failed to notice Ongais fire up and sent Callier on a single. During the mix-up, Harrell refired, and he and Ongais raced down the track. Thompson, quite heated, demanded a rerun between the cars, and Fritz agreed. On the rerun, Danny's 7.76 beat the Camaro's 7.93. During this time, Callier's car was known as the car to beat in Houston. He ran against Co-Go Eads' Mustang there in a best of three match race in June. Eads actually beat Fritz in the first race with an 8.12/176 win over the Camaro's 8.41/175, but Fritz came back to win the next two races and the match with times of 8.13/178 and a solo when the Mustang broke a blower drive, 8.08/180. On August 24 at the AHRA World Championships at Green Valley, a first-round 7.82 lost to Danny Ongais' 7.65. At Bristol for the AHRA All-American Championships, they held a race on September 6 during qualifying; their actual race was to be held the next day. But on the 6, Fritz ran 7.64/187.50 and 7.99 in the first two rounds before meeting Terry Hedrick in the semifinal. A 7.75 beat Terry's quicker 7.72. In the final, he had to shut off with no oil pressure giving Ronnie Runyan the win. The next day, for the real race, a 7.70 beat Tony Wahlay in the first round, but Wahlay got back in on the break rule and met Fritz again in round two. Once again, Fritz beat the 'Cuda, this time with a 7.73. Unfortunately, the Camaro broke and was unable to make the semifinal, reinstating Mike Burkhart. He competed at an eight-car show in Dallas on September 20, but a first-round 7.69 lost to Kelly Chadwick's 7.52. At Tulsa for the AHRA Points Finals on October 19, he ran a first-round 7.79 over Bob Manion, but a 7.68 by Gene Snow in the second round beat him. He met Snow at Houston for a best of three match. Fritz lost the first two races and the match when he smoked the tires to an 8.25 loss to Gene's 7.88, and in the second race, he fouled away a 7.94. He did win the final race with a 7.97, beating Snow's 8.20. |

Notes: The day of the Chevy-powered FCs had come and gone, but no one was about to tell that to this team. Fritz was at Dallas on March 15 for the season opener. He lost two straight against Jake Johnston in the "Blue Max" before Jake fouled away a 7.26 in their last race. Callier won the Mr. Chevrolet race held at Gary, Indiana, on April 25. It was a six-car field with all drivers making at least two runs. Fritz ran 7.85/193 to beat Tony Wahlay's 7.86/190 in the "Warlord," and a 7.51/207 defeated Dick Harrell's 7.57/204 in his second race. That got him into the final against Randy Walls, and the "CKC" team took the victory with a 7.78/203 over Walls' 7.98/196. In June, he qualified #1 at Bristol for the AHRA Springnationals with a 7.40. He beat Marv Eldridge's Corvette in the first round, and a second-round 7.74/189.86 topped Curtis Wasson's 7.75. He advanced into the final with a solo 9.10 when Dick Harrell lost fire. In the final, he ran Gene Snow. Callier tried hard, but his 7.77/187.10 finished runner-up to Gene's 7.35/205.00 (Top Speed). |

Notes: Won Eastern Funny Car Showdown event at Fremont in October at 6.68/212.76 over Liberman (6.88/208.80). Lew Arrington ran 6.75 at the event. Info from local newspaper (The Argus). Report said Callier was in a Camaro, however. We need to confirm. We had a 6.71 listed for the Vega in 1971. |
