Notes: In late March, Fritz was at Victoria Dragway in Texas for a best of three match race against Cecil Lankford, driving the "Brand X" Mustang. In their first race, Callier reset the track record to 7.06 at 206.16 while beating Lankford's 7.37/189. Fritz then set both ends of the track record in the second race with a 6.71/217.90. Cecil smoked the tires to 7.62/200 in his loss. The final race saw Fritz show that his times were not a fluke as he won three straight with a final 6.75/216.34 over Lankford's 7.02/211. The track records going into this match were 7.17/208.80, both held by Lankford.

Notes: This was Fritz Callier's last year campaigning an FC. Early in '75, the car was up for sale in National Dragster. The ad stated that the Vega used a Logghe chassis and a Ramchargers-built Hemi. The car never did sell and was parked under a tree in J.E. Kristek's driveway on July 20, 1974. It sat there for 30 years before it was purchased by a San Antonio individual who restored it with the help of the original CKC crew. | Was Buddy Cortines out of the team at this point?

Notes: Camenzind got his fuel Funny Car driver's license at Kansas City in July. His best pass was 6.19/220. Just a week later, NHRA Northstar Nationals where he qualified #15 with a 6.021/232.13. It was his first national event. His two qualifying passes were 6.06/232.13 and 6.021/229.06. Before this, his best alcohol run had been 6.46. He surprised himself and Mark Oswald in the first round, when his 5.945/212.16 beat Mark's tire-smoking 6.18/248 in the "Candies and Hughes" car. In round two, he got a gift from Don Prudhomme when the "Snake" fouled away a 5.55/264, and Larry cruised into the semifinals with a 6.83/144.71. The ride ended when eventual winner Ed McCulloch beat him with a 5.42/268 to Larry's 6.01/205.76. Larry improved at NHRA Topeka, qualifying #11 at 5.694/258.84. In round one, he ran a decent 5.763/248.61 but lost to Bruce Larson's 5.40/266.

Notes: Jerry's first Funny Car. Former Howie Neal 'Strip Teaser.' Neal ran the car in 1967, Caminito injected in 68, then blown in 68 and blown all 1969. | Caminito started the season at Miami-Hollywood on January 5 for a six-car show. Two cars bailed, and it became just a four-car affair, and in the first race, the Comet blew a transmission while racing Bruce Neff in the "Stroker" Camaro. Jerry qualified third with an 8.14 on February 16 at Miami's Winter Championships. He beat Tom Donahue in the first round, but had his blower explode, wrecking his Comet body. Jerry ran at Bristol on June 8 for the AHRA Springnationals, but he lost to Ronnie Runyan in the first round. He also competed at the third annual New Jersey State Championships on August 10 but fouled in the first round, running 8.99/147. On August 24, he met Bruce Neff at Dragway 42, West Salem, for a best of three match race. In the first race, he got out of shape on an 8.58/165.74 pass that lost to Neff's 8.35/178.21. In the second race, he fouled away an 8.33/178.02 that lost to Neff's nearly identical 8.35/178.21 (they checked the clocks). In the final race, Jerry's 8.33/169.49 beat the Camaro's 8.54/163.

Notes: After five years out of the sport, Caminito returned in 1979. Jerry did not run any NHRA national events in 1979. Jerry was at Richmond Dragway in August for the NHRA Division 2 race. Only six cars showed for what was supposed to be an eight-car field. In the opening round, his 6.96/146.10 lost to Dominic Santucci's 6.77/177. Photo from a PHR centerfold, which stated that the new car had gone a best of 6.56/229.59. We need to validate the date of this PHR issue. It seems suspect as Jerry ran 6.56/229.59 in the early 1981 NHRA competition. It's possible he also ran these exact times in 1979, but let's validate.

Notes: Caminito was at Maple Grove in May for its Spring Funny Car Nationals. All cars there ran two rounds, with the two lowest ET's meeting in the final. While he failed to reach the final, he did have an interesting run in the first round. His parachute had fallen out, and he still ran 6.36 at 149.50. Jerry went to Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals, but his 6.371/218.44 best failed to qualify. He also failed to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals with a similar 6.317/222.22. Jerry ran his first "five" in attempting to qualify at Indy for the NHRA US Nationals. Unfortunately, his 5.949/247.25 ended up as the first alternate for the show. That was Jerry's last NHRA national event for the year.

Notes: Jerry started his season at Gainesville, where he was the sixth alternate at 7.10/131. He ran 5.99/237.46 in a round at IHRA Bristol, but we need qualifying times. Jerry attempted to qualify at Englishtown for the NHRA Summernationals, but he was the first alternate with the best time of 6.009 seconds at 222.22 mph. He failed to qualify at the NHRA US Nationals (fifth alternate at 6.033/242.58) and at the NHRA Keystone Nationals, where the best he could get the car to run down the track was 16.46/31.80. He continued to have problems at Englishtown for the US All-Pro Funny Car Championships, losing to Bruce Larson's 5.85 in the first round, when he shut off to 11.21/75.50. Caminito later came back out in a consolation race and ran 6.10/221.13. | Can't remember where he ran the 5.86/250 numbers, specifically, only that it was listed in a "United Drag Racer" paper we picked up from Della Woods' trailer at Martin that year. - Curt Swartz

The following week (September 21), he was at Bristol for the IHRA Fallnationals. Caminito qualified #7 in the eight-car show, but in round one, he picked up to a 5.79/238 to beat Doc Halladay. In the semifinals, he lost to Dominic Santucci. On September 28, he was at the Texas Motorplex for the NHRA Chief Nationals. Unfortunately, his best of 5.853/248.96 was good for the second alternate. He arrived at Gainesville with the damaged car, and chassis builder Murf McKinney came to the race to ensure the chassis had no damage. They redid the fiberglass on the right side of the car. They finished it Wednesday at 11:00 pm. Caminito then ran 5.840/250.55 to qualify #14. After all that work, he fouled away a 5.878/191.40 in the first round, against John Force. His next stop was at Englishtown's Spring Funny Car Bonanza race in April. Jerry didn't reach the final, but he set Low ET and Top Speed at 5.88/241.93. At Maple Grove for its Spring Funny Car Nationals, Caminito failed to make the finals in the 12 car show that was run "Chicago Style." He did run 5.88/234.37 on one pass, but he blew the clutch on his other pass. rnAt the NHRA Grandnatinals, Jerry qualified #13 at 10.85 in a short field. In round one, he lost to Jim Head, 5.90/241 to 6.089/236.40. Jerry was the sixth alternate at NHRA Englishtown at 6.052/239.10. He qualified #15 at Indy at 5.786/246.17 and lost to Johnny West in round one, 5.75/257 to 5.879/249.44. He was the third alternate at the Keystone Nationals at 6.114/233.10 but qualified at Ennis at 5.551/254.38. In round one, he lost to Raymond Beadle, 5.72/255 to 9.86/83. That was Jerry's last NHRA national event of the year. Photo from Indy 1987.

Notes: Caminito's bad luck continued at Gainesville for the NHRA Gatornationals. He qualified #10 with a 5.62but in the opening round of eliminations, the car broke a couple of connecting rods, and the car caught fire. Jerry ended up with a badly burnt right hand but was otherwise ok. At Atco, for the IHRA Summernationals, Caminito qualified on the "bump" for the eight-car field with a 5.98/241.28. He faced low qualifier Ed McCulloch in the first round, and gambled on the tree. It came up red, and his 5.86 showed that he had to take the chance as Ed won with a 5.53. His next stop was at Columbus for the NHRA Springnationals. Once again, he was on the bump, and this time he lost to John Martin in the first round. He followed the NHRA tour to Canada for the Grandnationals, where his 5.89/249.79 qualified #12. Only fourteen cars showed, so some cars took it easy in qualifying as the last car in was at 7.38. Jerry got a break in the first round, when Kenny Bernstein fouled against him, but in round two, he lost to Johnny West driving the "Hawaiian." Back stateside for the NHRA Summernationals, he ran 5.70/252.10 to qualify #15. Jerry was at Maple Grove for the Super Stock Nationals. He qualified #5 in the eight-car field with a 5.80/245.23, but an off-pace 6.21/206.89 lost to eventual winner Bernstein's 5.66/248 in the opening round. | Best NHRA times are shown.
