Bud & Dons GuZler Dragster We'll Miss You

Last week we lost a great drag racer and a even greater friend. Don Mattison had been around Drag Racing since the early days, the South Side Chicago (Evergreen Park) garage where they tooled on the numerous GuZlers was my favorite place to stand and watch the blown rails come to life. As of a week ago Don still lived in the same house where that historic garage still stands, and although the GuZler is not parked in that garage anymore when standing inside it now you can somehow still smell the fuel. Don was one of the hardest working people I had ever met, no matter what the medical set backs that life threw at him (and there were plenty) he would just bounce back and get back to work. Maybe that's why his partner Bud and him were still great friends after all the years, and why the love of his life Pat (Patricia) and him stayed together their whole life after getting married when they were only 18. He may not have made it to a cover of a magazine but in my book he was always Top Fueler, gone but not forgotten we love you Don.
