There are commuter buses, metro rail, and my van! There is a commuter bus line that I ride... but the last one leaves at 8am and they begin to come back at 3pm so not sure that would work. There is a metrorail that is 14 miles from our house. That runs to DC all day and late into the night. That would be a good way to go. Of course, we have mini van that if not everyone can fit in, some can follow! bp

I personally am not going to be able to do The Smithsonian buildings and Arlington in the same day.
My old legs won't hold up for all that. I can sit out things If that is going to inconvenience anybody.
The old guy just can't do it anymore. :D

And it's all a hell of a lot farther apart than they show on the TV shows. The Capitol to the Lincoln is quite a hike!

Denise and were talking today and we started to sketch out some ideas. What do you think?

Wednesday -- if you're here, Bill will be off and we can work out some sightseeing.

Thursday -- more sightseeing, and a party at the Pratt's house that afternoon/night.

Friday -- more sightseeing, and our traditional dinner out. (Lots of choices around here, including dinner cruises or lots of good restaurants)

Saturday -- at the track with crabs/seafood on the water in Southern Maryland (near the track and on the way back to the hotel).

Sunday -- there is more event at the track, so we can meet for breakfast and go there or say farewell.

Anybody not leaving until Monday? We will work out more fun for Sunday night!

Other ideas? bp

That's great. We are super flexible, too. Whatever we can do to make it a fun trip for all... lots of time between now and then! bp

Sounds great bp. Don't forget the night tour of the lighted monuments.

Map of the Smithsonian complex: http://www.si.edu/Content/Pdf/Visit/mallmap.pdf
Says it is about a mile from GW Monument to the Capitol and I read that it is about 2 miles from the Capitol to Lincoln's Monument. Google maps states 4.2 miles from Smithsonian to Arlington.

Map of Arlington Cemetery: www.arlingtoncemetery.mil/docs/ANC_Map.pdf

http://www.nps.gov/nama/parknews/shuttl ... metery.htm

The National Mall is the monumental green space at the heart of Washington, D.C., the heart of the national psyche, and the heart of civic America. This national treasure stretches for two miles just south of the White House, from the U.S. Capitol Building in the east to the Lincoln Memorial and Potomac River on the west. The park is home to the Smithsonian, a huge collection of the nation's best (and free) museums, as well as most of the country's most famous memorials and monuments. It is the number-one destination for visitors in the city, and one of the biggest destinations in the country.

Yes, we can do the monument drive one of the nights for sure. There is a shuttle that you get off and on that does Arlington and the monuments. Probably the best way to do it without wearing out shoe leather. For some things I can drive and drop off, but parking is a real bear so it's hard to participate at each thing.
