We have the 23T together. I just need to do some more body work on the back deck. I finished the fiberglass work, and now just need to finsh it off, prime and block a few times, then paint. 8)

We also have the rear end out of the new car. Working on taking it all apart. We have the block in, and the alignment bar intalled to make sure the rear end and trans and engine are all in line with one another. That went pretty well the other night after some moving around on the motor plate.

We started making a new throttle pedal today. We checked the front spindles to see what size bearings to order for the front wheels. We measured the old wheels, so we can get the new rear wheels coming also. We remounted the hand brake lever, to achieve a better relationship to the master cylinder. We spent some time working on the throttle cable and throttle controller mounting designed. The last thing, I also did some modifying on the wheelie bar.

Other than that,,,didn't do much today!

Latest Updates

Postby Rapid Randy Baker » Sun Jan 21, 2007 10:51 pm

Hi Gang. Scott and I have been putting in quite a few extra nights at the race shop. I have the rear deck re-fit to the car and almost ready for primer. Since the 23T car is all together with the exception of the bodywork I am doing on the rear deck, Scott has been going full speed on the Coupe car.

Most would have taken this car and just put the engine/trans in and raced it. It was that nice. However we are going thru the car stem to stern checking everything. I am talking about every single piece on the car is getting checked over just like we did on the 23T before we put it up for sale. This what we do every Winter.

We have replaced all the heim ends, increasing the size of a few of the steering ones. We went with the steel steering arms instead of the aluminum ones that came with the car. We modified the rear end mounting plates to get the engine, trans and rear end in perfect alignment. It was very close before, like within a 1/16th of an inch. We hand filed the holes until the fit was perfect, then we drilled the new location holes out to 1/2-inch for extra strength. Once the rear end fit like we wanted it to, Scott took the brackets over to the sander and dressed them out really nice.

The guys removed the inspection cover on the rear end and it all looked great. So what did we do, yep we took it all apart and are putting new bearings and seals. The ring gear and pinion look like new. Of course they should with the low number of runs on this chassis, but it was nice to know for sure it will be perfect for the season.

Scott has the new front motor plate built. The car came with a 2-piece front motor mount. We liked the 1-piece in the old car, so he built a 1-piece to fit this chassis.

We have discussed at length the fuel and oil tanks for the car. Most will remember the trick "Radiator looking" dry sump tank we had on the 23T car. We have decided to use it on the new car. It works good and we know it holds enough oil. It will be mounted so it can float in the chassis, which we believe will stop it from cracking like it has a couple of times on us. I think we need somewhere around a 15-gallon fuel tank on the car. We will see what happens in that dept.

Our goal is to get all the welding and tabbing done with everything mounted. Then guess what,,,,we are going to take it all apart, media blast the chassis and repaint it. The 23T looks so nice with new paint on the chassis, we just wanted the same for the Coupe. :D

Then the car will be reassembled while I do the Paintwork on the Coupe body. I am real anxious to get going on it.

Thanks for checking in on us. 8)

Can't wait to see the new paint Randy. Are you gonna' do the exact same paint as the "T" or will there be some surprises? :?:

It will be the same Purple as a base color on the body. I don't know the graphic colors yet. The chassis is going to be a Charcoal metallic like the Caddie firemist color. The 23T is a lighter grey metallic. :D

Short update on the Nitro Madness team cars

Postby Rapid Randy Baker » Sun Jan 28, 2007 1:41 pm

I thought I would just put an update in here. I finished sanding and fiberglassing on the rear body panel of the 23T car yesterday. I decided to take it with me to work and finish it on up from here. I can spend some time right after work and get it painted this week. Then we will be all done with the 23T and it will be ready to sell. I am just not getting enough done on it when I go to the race shop. I seem to get distracted by the new toy and the progress Scott has been making on it.

We have been getting tons of calls on the 23T car. There seems to be plenty of interest. I have talked to a guy from Canada yesterday who seems pretty interested in getting it. Scott has a couple of guys who act like they are ready when we are also. I think when we decide it is ready to sell, it won't be here long. I have to say I sure will miss it. It is a great car.

While I have been working on the body Scott has been ordering tabs and brackets, handles etc for the new Coupe. As I have said before are just going over everything from front to back on it. Scott built a new fire system. We are now using the cross-over style. This is where if I ever had to pull the fire bottles, my lever is attached directly to one bottle, then a crossover tube {steel braided line} is run from the 1st bottle to the 2nd one. The charge from the 1st bottle sets off the 2nd one. This system makes it so you don't have to have mechanical linkage run to both tanks. It is a simpler and cleaner set-up,

We put the trans back in, and started measuring for the shifter mount. Since the engine is 3" further forward, we have to make a mount that puts the shifter back in a location where I can reach it again. Since this car is a semi-lay down chassis, the shifter has to come 4.5-inches back towards me to be in the same location for me. So we had to order some tubing to fab that.

We have been working on the throttle pedal also. It is as complete as we can get it until the super charger and fuel injector are in place so we can check the exact throw we need. The original throttle pedal had the pivot mount in about the center. It felt like it was rocking rather than pushing a pedal. So we made the new one about 75% above the pivot, and 25% on the bottom side of the pivot. It feels much better to me this way. We are moving the throttle controller down by the pedal rather than out by the injector. It will do a few things for us. It keeps it out of the way of the mag and valve cover, it makes the engine look a little more period correct. Since the body flips up, we have easy access to it that we didn't on the 23T car. We considered not using it, but it really is a good tool for launching that we elected to keep it.

Yesterday we located and tabbed the mounts for my fresh air system. This is the bottle that attaches to my helmet. When I turn it on, if forces breathable air into the helmet. It keeps the fumes out, and also keeps it from fogging up the visor. We also decided where to put the battery, and how to mount it. In the same area we located the overflow tank for the Lencodrive. This tank doesn't need drained, it is more like a catch-can that the fluid can expand into, and then drain back into the trans as required. The last thing Scott and I got done before I left was to create and mount the 2-rear parachutes. Ours are the air activated style, so we had to revise the mount to clear the air cylinders and drill the holes in the body.

The thing most people who don't work on this kind of car, is every change you make has to be carefully planned. I change here, effects 8-other things down the line. If the chutes weren't in the correct place the air cylinders will hit the puke tank for the oil system, if you move the puke tank to clear the air cylinders, then the battery location changes, which means that the Lencodrive overflow tank won't fit. The whole car has to fit together so everything is in it place, and a place for everything.

That was the first modification to the body itself. So I guess we are officially working on the new car now!

Fascinating stuff, Randy. I'm always amazed at how much goes into the maintenance and running of these cars. bp
