This is basically my neighborhood. I know that kids have raced on that road for years. It's a four lane highway that runs straight from Washington DC South to Indian Head on the Western side of the Southern Maryland Peninsula. Straight and usually desolated at night, it's always been a perfect draw for the street racing crowd. Ironically, it's also just a half hour or so to MIR and Crofton in either direction. [Add standard 'don't street race' paragraph here.] My condolences to the families. bp

.....this is one of those "complicated" situations; Bill's comment is the ideal, of course. Obviously, many street racers who race both on and off legal strips are thinking about the eight 'tators who lost their lives tonight.
The Brotherhood, as EKF will also tell you, is strongly in favor of the safest, no-problems situation to race within possible. People are welcome to PM me and dialogue--this is a respectful community, and I'd welcome it....... :cry:

Tonight I was watching ABC7 news and this story came on. They called the incident drag racing several times. I usually don't get too fired up over T.V. news stories but this one just got under my skin. So I threw this letter together and sent it to them. Probably won't make a difference, but i fell better........ :oops: :twisted:
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I was watching the news tonight a saw your story on the 8 people killed in an ILLEGAL STREET RACING" incident. I see the story on the net has the information right, but the T.V. newscast mistakingly call this "DRAG RACING" several times during the segment. Drag racing is ONLY done on a sanctioned drag strip. Any racing done anywhere other than a sanctioned drag strip is "ILLEGAL STREET RACING" and should NEVER EVER be associated with "LEGAL DRAG RACING". DRAG STRIPS are a legal alternative to Illegal street racing. Without drag strips illegal street racing would increase. It's very important the general public understands that DRAG RACING(Legal) and STREET RACING (Illegal) are two very different things.
Thank You.
Just saw on the local news that the names of the accident victims have been announced. Had the family members on the TV calling for 'justice' against the guy in the white car. No mitigating comments about a crowd of people standing in the middle of a 55 mph highway at 3:40 am in the middle of a cloud of burnout smoke. Here we go... bp
Exactly, BP. There were no victims in this. They chose to be there. My sympathy is all but erased by that fact. I don't see any of it as tragic. Just a stupid waste that further damages the general perception of our sport. Sorry if this offends anyone, it's just the way I see it. WC1
