Yikes!!!! I completely forgot that I said i'd post some of my racing history here way back in September.
Even farther back than that, somewhere around 1952, I went into what I thought was the forbidden zone. It was the crawl space under an addition that my Dad had put on our house several years before.
As I was snooping around amid the storm windows, lumber, and various other items one might find in a crawl space, I spotted a race car. I couldn't believe my eyes, a real race car, just my size, it had 4 wheels and tires, a steering wheel and a motor. It was maroon and white with a big number 2 on the tail section.
Naturally I climbed in it and won several races with it in the next several minutes. You know, the vrooom, vroom kind that we all have in the shop when no one is looking!! LOL
When we sat down to supper that evening I couldn't contain my excitement over my discovery. I knew I could be in big trouble because, as I said, this was a forbidden zone to a 5 or 6 year old. LOL
Throwing caution to the wind, I had to ask my folks about my discovery.
To my complete amazement, I wasn't in trouble, but even better, I was told that it was indeed a race car, a quarter midget, that my Dad had hand built for my big brother Bill, who was twelve years older than I was, back in the late 30's. He had raced it at some local tracks and did quite well with it.
Even more to my amazement, I was told that it did indeed run and that my dad would dig it out the following weekend and I could drive it around the back yard.
My Dad kept his promise and got it running for me. Once in a while he would even let me take it up and down the street in front of our house.
That, ladies and gentlemen, was the very beginning of my involvement with race cars.
To be continued.........
